Drawing and Painting Art at ramsey Art at Ramsey is a well-established, highly-acclaimed art fair. This juried show features original fine arts and fine crafts made by the exhibiting artists. It is held in conjunction with Grand Meander, the Grand Avenue Business Association’s holiday promotion. Watercolor Painting on Location

Paint some of the beautiful sites of St. Paul while learning the basics of material and techniques. Practice strokes and gain confidence with a brush. Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE)

Parent and early childhood education for families with children ages birth to kindergarten. ECFE provides quality classes and family activities that support parents as their children’s first and most important teachers. The standard ECFE model has 3 components: Family time (parents & children together), parent’s time and children’s time. A variety of classes are offered mornings, afternoons and evenings, including mixed ages (birth to 5), age specific (infants and toddlers) and culturally specific. Family literacy and home visiting are also part of the program. Fees are based on ability to pay. No one is turned away. Limited transportation is provided as needed. Pre-Kindergarten Program

Preparing four-year-old children for school success. Children need to be four by September 1 and live in Saint Paul. Most schools have admission priorities to serve children who are English Language Learners, qualify for free or reduced meals, or receive Early Childhood Special Education services. Classes are 5 days per week, 2.5 to 3 hours in the morning or afternoon. Parent education and support is available during this year-long transition to kindergarten. Transportation is provided where available. To apply for the program, call the Student Placement Center. In addition to the Pre-Kindergarten Program, J.J. Discovery Club

Year-round out-of-school-time child care for children enrolled in pre-K through 6th grade. During Discovery Club time children participate in a wide variety of fun, engaging enrichment activities that provide them with hands-on opportunities to practice academic, social and physical skills. Children are supervised by educated, experienced adults who genuinely care about children. The program is fee-based; financial assistance is available to qualifying families. Let the Segway do the work as you cover several miles accompanied by a professional guide. Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

Wednesday-Monday, October 3-8 Course# 8045-SSA Come along with us as we travel through the Rocky Mountains on into New Mexico's Land of Enchantment and the International Balloon Festival. We will fly into Denver and travel by deluxe motorcoach along the Front Range to Colorado Springs where we will visit Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods. Thursday afternoon we will continue our trip via Santa Fe, known as The City of the Holy Faith and the oldest and highest capital city in the country. We will enjoy a narrated tour aboard an open-air tram. Here at the end of the famed Santa Fe Trail is the Palace of the Governors and the Historic Plaza. Santa Fe is the second largest art market in the world after Paris and boasts many museums and galleries. Friday we're off to Albuquerque, sure to be the highlight of our trip. Saturday morning our spirits will soar as we attend the International Balloon Festival and witness wave after wave of these silent, colorful airships lift off into the early morning sky. See as many as 500 beautiful balloons at once posing aloft for the most photographed event in the world. Spend the morning amidst the activities and sights at the Fiesta Field. Water Safety Aide (WSA) Training

Teach children and adults how to swim. Learn how to assist American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors in teaching swim lessons. Must demonstrate a strong sense of maturity and responsibility throughout the course and be competent swimmers. Candidates, 14 years and older, must possess Level 4 swimming skills or higher and pass a skills pre-test conducted on the first day. Participants unable to pass the skills pre-test will be refunded the course fee minus a $15 processing fee. After successful completion of the course, students are qualified to apply for employment.

Lifeguard Training

Become certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding for pools, First Aid, CPR and AED. Attendance at all class sessions is mandatory. Students must be 15 years or older by the last day of class and be able to pass a skills pre-test. Participants who do not pass the pre-test will be issued a refund minus a $15 processing fee and will not be able to continue in the course. Certification will be issued after successful completion of written exams and skill tests; if participants do not pass the course, neither certification nor refund will be issued.

Swimmers build on front and back crawl and are introduced to deep water skills. Included are water safety skills, survival floats, treading water, kneeling dives, dolphin kick, scissors kick, and elementary backstroke.

Level 4 – Stroke Improvement

Swimmers work to improve front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke, and increase endurance. Included are water safety skills, open turns, standing dives, breaststroke, butterfly, and sidestroke. Swimmers work on coordination and refinement of all strokes (front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and sidestroke) and increase their distances. Included are water safety skills, shallow-angle dives, surface dives, sculling, and flip turns.

(Ladder entry/exit only) Aqua Zumba takes dance fitness into the swimming pool! Get ready for an aquatics workout that will rock you to your core! This is a total-body workout with the added comfort and resistance of water. Water shoes are recommended.

Prenatal Water Exercise

(Ladder entry/exit only) Help alleviate pain and reduce stress and fatigue while strengthening postural muscles and building endurance in preparation for labor and delivery. Recommended for women at least 12 weeks pregnant. Doctor's approval required.

This healthful and relaxing activity includes exercises for stretching, agility and a light aerobic workout that is done in shallow water.

Water Pilates

Experience a full range of functional walking-through-water exercises to encourage core stability, balance, and preventing falls.

This is a nationally-ranked program, coached by conscientious and hard-working coaches. You will learn swim skills which include dance and acrobatic movements accomplished on the surface and underwater. Swimmers work to refine strokes so they can swim with more ease, efficiency, and power over greater distances. Included are water safety skills, turns for all strokes, surface dives, survival swimming, and self-rescue techniques while clothed.

Gymnastics Beginners l Flips l Tumbling Our gymnastics programs are safe, supportive, engaging and fun. In class, children gain flexibility, leadership, strength and coordination. Our instructors enjoy working with youth of all ages and abilities. We do end-of-session evaluations of students and inform families when your children are ready to progress. Observation is limited to the last day of class. Parents/guardians must complete and sign a waiver on the first day of class in order for their child to participate in C.E. Gymnastics. Tumble Together

Ages 2-5 and adult. Learn gymnastics in a semi-structured class and develop balancing, jumping, rolling, climbing and hanging skills. The classroom prepares the student for the written permit test. Upon completion of the classroom and obtaining a driver’s permit, Behind-the Wheel education will be scheduled by the teachers with the individual students. The Behind-the Wheel component prepares the student for the road test. • A student is required to have their permit for six months and be 16 years of age before they are eligible to take the road test for their driver’s license. • After successful completion of classroom instruction, the student has 18 months to finish the Behind-the Wheel portion of the program. • A refund minus a fifty-dollar ($50) fee will be issued upon request for cancellation from the program. Refunds will not be issued after one year from the beginning date of classroom instruction.

ALC Summer Session 2012 will be held June 18-July 10. (No school July 4.) Students will attend classes daily for six hours of academic instruction at various elementary, middle/junior, and senior high school sites. at www.commed.spps.org To create a new account: Click on View My Account above and follow the prompts to set up your new account. Some of our classes may not be available for online registration. Any of our offices (listed on page 76) are happy to help you with these classes.

Call the Community Education telephone number listed, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., weekdays. Please have your credit card number and expiration date ready when calling. Refer to both the class title and course number when registering.

Complete a registration form (on page 79) and mail it with a check or credit card number (Visa, MasterCard or Discover) to the address of the Community Education Office that is taking registration for the class. See page 76 for Community Education Offices. If paying by check, your place is confirmed when payment is received (make checks payable to ISD# 625).

Cancellations

Saint Paul Public Schools Community Education reserves the right to cancel classes due to lack of enrollment or emergencies.

Refunds

• Refunds minus a $5 processing fee will only be issued if requested three (3) business days prior to the start of the first day of class. No refunds will be given after a class has started. • For classes and tours that have a published cancellation deadline, no refunds or credits will be issued after the specified dates. (For tour refund policy, see page 33.) • Full refunds or credits are issued if Community Education cancels a class or tour, or the class or tour is already filled.

Closings Due to Weather

In case of bad weather, tune in to local media – broadcast, print and online for information on school closures or check the district’s website at www.spps.org for the most current updates. Classes are not held when schools are closed due to the weather.

UCare Minnesota Discounts

All UCare Minnesota members may take up to a $15 discount per class on most classes offered in this catalog. If a class is less than $15, the member may take the class free of charge. UCare for Seniors is now limited to one class/event per year. Members will need to include their UCare ID number when registering. UCare registration is not available online.
