Art at ramsey

Art at Ramsey is a wellestablished, highly-acclaimed art fair. This juried show features original fine arts and fine crafts made by the exhibiting artists. It is held in conjunction with Grand Meander, the Grand Avenue Business Association’s holiday promotion. Drawing Animals

Learn various techniques for drawing animals including quick, gestural drawings made from life, as well as drawing from photographs. We will bounce between field trips to draw live animals and classroom work with photographs to build up and complete sketches into more finished pieces. Preparing four-year-old children for school success. Children need to be four by September 1 and live in Saint Paul. Most schools have admission priorities to serve children who are English Language Learners, qualify for free or reduced meals, or receive Early Childhood Special Education services. Wednesday, June 19 1:00p-4:00p Course# 6140-SuSA St. Paul Community Education will be participating in a community service opportunity with Second Harvest Heartland. As the Upper Midwest's largest hunger relief organization, Second Harvest Heartland’s goal is not only to help our hungry neighbors today, but to provide the means for everyone to be fed tomorrow. In 2010 alone, they collected and distributed over 60 million pounds of food. Second Harvest Heartland distributes boxes of groceries each month to over 9,000 low-income seniors and mothers with children. All 9,000 boxes are packed by volunteers on an assembly line! You can be one of those volunteers. This service opportunity requires standing for approximately three hours, with occasional breaks, and placing an item in the boxes as they travel on a conveyor belt. Please wear closed-toe shoes for safety. Participants will meet at the Second Harvest Heartland’s Maplewood warehouse at 1040 Gervais Ave., 55109 (Hwy. 36 and Hwy. 61). Travel over hills and through the woods to learn, laugh and understand how those living on family farms are reinventing what they do to make life on the farm sustainable. Treasured Haven Farm, a century farm, participates in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), crop production, saw milling and more. The Crazy Ladies House, voted a Twin Cities Live Viewer's Choice Award Winner in 2012, has converted its farm house into a one of a kind boutique. Another local gem, Twisted Suri Alpaca Ranch, focuses on raising alpaca and prides itself on using 85% of the animal for products from fiber to meat, leather, and even dog food. Barns to Rails

Wednesday, August 21 Course# 8065-SuSA Did you know that Canterbury Park's stable area has 33 barns and 1,620 stalls? The backside of the park is ranked one of the best in the nation. We will have the opportunity to take a tour, and see horse training and more during our visit. From Canterbury, we will embark on a guided tour of "Barn Quilts of Carver County". This local project connects barn owners, artists and the community to embrace regional pride, history and creativity. We will wrap up our day with a ride on the Excelsior Streetcar Line of the Minnesota Streetcar Museum to visit their extensive collection housed in the museum’s car barn. Swissconsin to Taliesin

All six New England states will be visited on this inclusive tour which has been planned by local tour operator Landmark Tours. Tuesday-Thursday, August 6-8 Course # 8062-SSA So much to do and so little time, this three-day tour will keep you on the go. Discover the only place in the world where you can see all fifteen crane species, the International Crane Foundation headquarters in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Experience the unique on our tour of the National Mustard Museum, one of the world's largest collections of prepared mustards and mustard memorabilia. In New Glarus "Little Switzerland", you will check into the Chalet Landhaus Inn for a two-night stay. The Chalet Landhaus Inn Restaurant will provide us with a Swiss cookout to round out our day of travel. A visit to Green County wouldn't be complete without a stop for cheese. Tour the chalet-style plant that manufactures specialty cheeses at Alp and Dell Cheese Store and Emmi Roth USA. Wash down that cheese with sampling from Minhas Craft Brewery, the second oldest brewery in the nation. Monroe's Courthouse Square will be your source for lunch on your own. Learn about and have fun playing different games in the pool including water polo, sharks and minnows, and underwater hockey. Swimmers must have Level 3 swimming skills or higher.

Lifeguard Training

Become certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding for pools, First Aid, CPR, and AED. Attendance at all class sessions is mandatory. Students must be 15 years or older by the last day of class and be able to pass a skills pre-test. Participants who do not pass the pre-test will be issued a refund minus a $15 processing fee and will not be able to continue in the course. Certification will be issued after successful completion of written exams and skill tests. If participants do not pass the course, neither certification nor refund will be issued. Swim Instructor Assistant Training

Learn how to assist swim instructors in teaching swim lessons. Candidates must be 14 years or older, demonstrate a strong sense of maturity and responsibility, and be competent swimmers. Candidates must pass a skills pre-test conducted on the first day. Participants unable to pass the skills pre-test will be refunded the course fee minus a $10 processing fee. After successful completion of the course, participants will be qualified to apply for an assistant position with Community Education. Synchronized Swimming St. Paul Stars

This is a nationally-ranked program, coached by conscientious and hard-working coaches. You will learn swim skills which include dance and acrobatic movements accomplished on the surface and underwater. Participation in this activity requires a placement tryout and acceptance to a team level of your ability. (Ladder entry/exit only) Tone up your body and improve cardiovascular fitness while having fun exercising in the water to music. Toning will be emphasized.

Swimmers concentrate on swimming with more ease, efficiency, and power over greater distances with an emphasis on training techniques. Work on starts, turns, streamlining, and stroke drills. Class sections available for swimmers in grades K-2, grades 3-5, and grades 6-8. All swimmers must be able to swim one length of the pool.

Water Pilates

Swimmers build on front and back crawl and are introduced to deep water skills. Included are water safety skills, survival floats, treading water, kneeling dives, dolphin kick, scissors kick, and elementary backstroke.

Our gymnastics programs are safe, supportive, engaging and fun. In class, children gain flexibility, leadership, strength and coordination. The Basics: • Students must be 15 years of age by the last day of class. • This course consists of the State required 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of Behind the-Wheel. The classroom prepares the student for the written permit test. Upon completion of the classroom and obtaining a driver’s permit, Behind-the Wheel education will be scheduled by the teachers with the individual students. The Behind-the Wheel component prepares the student for the road test. • A student is required to have their permit for six months and be 16 years of age before they are eligible to take the road test for their driver’s license. • After successful completion of classroom instruction, the student has 18 months to finish the Behind-the Wheel portion of the program. • A refund minus a fifty-dollar ($50) fee will be issued upon request for cancellation from the program. Refunds will not be issued after one year from the beginning date of classroom instruction.

Cancellations

Saint Paul Public Schools Community Education reserves the right to cancel classes due to lack of enrollment or emergencies.

Refunds

• Refunds minus a $5 processing fee will only be issued if requested three (3) business days prior to the start of the first day of class. No refunds will be given after a class has started. • For classes and tours that have a published cancellation deadline, no refunds or credits will be issued after the specified dates. (For tour refund policy, see page 32.) • Full refunds or credits are issued if Community Education cancels a class or tour, or the class or tour is already filled.

Closings Due to Weather

In case of bad weather, tune in to local media – broadcast, print and online for information on school closures or check the district’s website at www.spps.org for the most current updates. Classes are not held when schools are closed due to the weather.

UCare Discounts

All UCare members may take up to a $15 discount per class on most classes offered in this catalog. If a class is less than $15, the member may take the class free of charge. UCare for Seniors is now limited to one class/event per year. Members will need to include their UCare ID number when registering. UCare registration is not available online.
