How did the idea for The Boston Project: Project Resilience come about?

When it became clear that we would not be back live in the theater this spring, the staff and I began brainstorming ways to make our new works initiative, known as The Boston Project, possible during the pandemic. Throughout the months at home, the idea of resilience was often on my mind, specifically the question of what keeps us going during times of uncertainty and despair. From those musings came the idea of asking local playwrights to write short monologues, set in different Boston neighborhoods, featuring characters standing tall despite a wide array of challenges.

How do you define "resilience"? What does that word mean to you? Resilience to me is many things: persistence, the ability to keep moving, the strength to just keep swimming. I am often accused of being the eternal optimist, but I’ll admit it was difficult to stay positive during the pandemic. I also like that the plays explore the difference between a person’s public face and what they are actually feeling inside. We see that often in these characters.

Director/Associate Producer

Dawn M. Simmons Why did you want to be a part of The Boston Project: Project Resilience? I have always enjoyed working with SpeakEasy on The Boston Project. Through this program, I've been able to get my hands on really challenging work that tackles complex issues; so when Paul and Alex asked me to join again this year, it was a no-brainer. All of the plays take place outdoors in different locations around the city. Was that planned? If so, why was that important? It was planned and part of the logistical realities of producing while coming out of the pandemic. And for me, filming outdoors and around the city created a beautiful homage to, and reacquainted us with, the place we call home that maybe hasn't felt like home over the past year or so. s o . Boston just isn't Boston without the crush of people all around, and this project is like going on a date with the city. Each story and location introduces you to the multi-dimensional facets of the city's personality. What do you hope folks take away after seeing this production? I'd love to turn this question on its head. Imagine yourself sitting with each speaker. Take their hand and listen. Listen intently and with an open heart. They're talking to you. Now tell us what you took away. What did you hear, learn, feel? Was there a surprise smile, laugh, tear? Did you get a glimpse into a world not your own, or hear a story that could be your own? Or was it the sight of grass so green it made you sneeze? I want us all to listen and inch towards greater understanding, but that feels so "goody goody"; so I want to know, we've put these stories in front of you, what did you take away?

SPEAKEASY'S EQUITY & ANTI-RACISM ACTION PLAN Dear SpeakEasy family, On behalf of the SpeakEasy staff and board, I am pleased to let you know about SpeakEasy's Equity and Anti-Racism Action Plan, the culmination of months of vital and deliberate work spurred on by the events of the last year. You can find the full document on our website. At SpeakEasy Stage, we stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and those calling for justice and radical change. The appalling events of 2020 exposed the inherent racism and inequity in our nation, our city, and our community. We witnessed the murders of innocent Black individuals at the hands of police officers; the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on communities of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC); as well as the inequities in our industry as pointed out by a collective of BIPOC theatre-makers in We See You, White American Theatre. On our stage and throughout our programming, we tell stories that invite us to understand ourselves and the world around us more deeply; to uplift the voices of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, economic statuses, and abilities; and envision the changes we wish to see in our society. We acknowledge that this alone is not enough, and that we must actively and deliberately reduce harm and combat systemic oppression in all forms, both on and off our stage. In June, we began an intentional journey to examine our own inequitable practices and complicity in systemic racism and systems of oppression that are based on ethnicity, gender, economic status, and ability. To further address and undo these wrongs, our board and staff developed an equity and anti-racism commitment statement as well as a specific and detailed action plan to guide this on-going work. We recognize that this work will not end with the accomplishment of any particular objective. This plan is a living, breathing document that will evolve as our learning evolves and as the environment around us continues to change. We are committed to updating this plan annually and sharing it with you, and with the greater Boston community on our website as well. We will hold ourselves accountable to this work, and we expect that you will, too. I look forward to hearing from you about this plan, and invite you to share your thoughts through this form. I know that together, we can build a more equitable, just, and inclusive community where everyone can thrive. Sincerely,

Paul Daigneault Producing Artistic Director

PLAY DISCUSSION CLUB: SERIES 8 In conjunction with our virtual production of The Boston Project: Project Resilience, SpeakEasy’s next series of our Play Discussion Club will feature three plays that take place in and around Boston, celebrating the complex and resilient characters that live and thrive here. SpeakEasy will be able to provide a limited number of complimentary scripts per week. If you would like one of these scripts, please email alexlonati@speakeasystage.com. Complimentary scripts will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

WEEK 1: Good People by David Lindsay-Abaire Thursday, June 17, from 5-6pm Sign Up Here! | Purchase the Script!

Welcome to Southie, a Boston neighborhood where a night on the town means a few rounds of bingo, where this month’s paycheck covers last month’s bills, and where Margie Walsh has just been let go from yet another job. Facing eviction and scrambling to catch a break, Margie thinks an old fling who’s made it out of Southie might be her ticket to a fresh new start. But is this apparently self-made man secure enough to face his humble beginnings? Margie is about to risk what little she has left to find out. With his signature humorous glow, Lindsay-Abaire explores the struggles, shifting loyalties, and unshakeable hopes that come with having next to nothing in America.

WEEK 2: Stick Fly by Lydia R. Diamond Wednesday, June 23, from 5:30-6:30pm Sign Up Here! | Purchase the Script!

The affluent, African-American LeVay family is gathering at their Martha’s Vineyard home for the weekend, and brothers Kent and Flip have each brought their respective ladies home to meet the parents for the first time. Kent’s fiancée, Taylor, an academic whose absent father was a prominent author, struggles to fit into the LeVay’s upper-crust lifestyle. Kimber, on the other hand, a self-described WASP who works with inner-city school children, fits in more easily with the family. Joining these two couples are the demanding LeVay patriarch, Joe, and Cheryl, the daughter of the family’s longtime housekeeper. As the two newcomers butt heads over issues of race and privilege, long-standing family tensions bubble under the surface and reach a boiling point when secrets are revealed.

WEEK 3: The Flick by Annie Baker Thursday, July 1, from 5-6pm Sign Up Here! | Purchase the Script!

In a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35mm film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on screen. With keen insight and a finely-tuned comic eye, The Flick is a hilarious and heart-rending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world. 10
