What were the challenges of this particular process?

What do you hope audiences will take away from seeing this show?

5 Visit SpeakEasyStage.com for behind-the-scenes exclusives about Heroes of the Fourth Turning, and the other productions in our 2022-23 Season.

Heroes demands a lot of its audience, and some of you will find it hard to sit still when these characters passionately and eloquently share and debate their beliefs. But keep in mind that playwright Will Arbery is not seeking to amplify these voices nor evoke empathy for his characters. Instead, I think, he asks his audience to consider how political identities are formed and how they come to define us, no matter where we fall on the political spectrum.

Did you have any reservations about taking on this project?

Our audiences will likely have strong reactions to this play. I don’t personally spend a lot of time with Catholic Republicans, and the ones I do know and love… we do not argue about religion or politics; we barely touch it. With this play, I relish the time and space (with the slight safety of theatre) to be immersed in this alternate (yet very real) universe.

This play challenges me—as an artist, and as a liberal woman in America. While these characters might represent certain Christian archetypes, they are also human, funny, tragic, messy people that I love in spite of myself. The play snuck up on me emotionally; I was gutted.

We began rehearsal just a few weeks after Roe v. Wade was over turned. Our political climate is different than it was when Will Arbery wrote this, and continued to change every day as we prepared to mount this show. Many of us are grieving and outraged. The play feels urgent, the warnings feel louder; it’s a hot environ ment to work in.

INSIDE SPEAKEASY

Why did you decide to open your 32nd Season with Heroes of the Fourth Turning?

I also see Heroes of the Fourth Turning as a reminder of the conver sations not only that divide us today, but also those we need to have to heal as a nation. And any time a play sparks bold conversation, you know I want to share it with you.

I had the pleasure of seeing Heroes of the Fourth Turning in New York in 2019 and was totally taken by it. It was one of those chal lenging plays that I was still thinking about days after I saw it. And even though I put it aside for a while, the play kept bubbling to the top when I was looking for titles for our new season. And the reason for that, I think, is that Heroes is also one of those rare plays whose relevance and importance have only increased over time.

In talking with people about this play, I hear the view that Heroes is an indictment of the religious right, AND the view that the play is a platform for them. So, should we hate these people? Fear them? Empathize with them? Enjoy them? I’m always looking for the dual ity, the complexity.

Thousands of years and many, MANY philosophers, plays, and religions later, we are still having big conversations on how to live well, and how to live well with each other. Heroes, though specific to a certain demographic, is a reprisal of the many late-night big conversa tions we’ve all had with friends and family and strangers: long, rambling, engaging discus sions seeking answers to big and small questions alike; conversations steeped in symbol ism, story, and metaphor; need and longing, searching for just the right language for full expression; moments in pubs, dorm rooms, cafés, parks, street corners, subway cars, and buses, over wine, whiskey, coffee, beers, and cigarettes… sometimes a joint.

LET'S HAVE A Big Conversation

I suspect that an audience of a hundred people will take away a hundred different impres sions from this play; but I also suspect they will recognize and relate to the deep impulse to seek and question, even if we find ourselves on opposite sides of the question. Here’s to big conversations!

When I first heard about Heroes of the Fourth Turning, my immediate thought was: “In 2022, do I really care about four white Catholic conservatives chatting in Wyoming?” It’s a world I already sort of know, and, considering the last (almost) two decades of American politics, a world I’m not eager to dwell in.

Arbery’s characters are students of a classical liberal arts education; schooled in the Great Books, beginning with the Greeks. The pedagogical models for the fictional Transfiguration College of Wyoming (as well as for Wyoming Catholic College, on which TCW is based), are the teachings, philosophies, and education practices of Plato and Aristotle. The conversation style Theresa, Justin, Emily, and Kevin engage in recalls the Socratic dialogues depicted in Plato’s philosophical works, which touch on all sorts of topics — parenting, the nature of art, politics, and government. The conversations themselves are an exercise of Aristotle’s ethics, or at least a genuine interrogation of how to live them: how do humans achieve eu daemonia, or “flourish” in life while being the very nature of what they are—rational, social, and therefore political, animals with emotions, desires, and urges?

Four friends having a “big conversation” in the middle of the night touching on all the major topics: politics, philosophy, relationships, religion, faith, goodness, suffering — life! The play felt like I was back in ancient Greece, sitting in the agora (an outdoor open space for assemblies and markets), listening to a classic Platonic dialogue. In ancient Greece, poli tics, religion, and art were not separate distinct disciplines; even theatrical events were usually a mix of the three. More often than not, these three ideas—which we strive to keep fully separate today—blended into one another as citizens of the poleis (city, society) sought to understand life and how to live it well. That is philosophy. Politics, meanwhile, is how to live well with each other.

Then I read the play. “Do your due diligence,” I thought. My immediate reaction: “Damn. You got Whileme.”the Catholicism and conservatism are the initial draws for most viewers, what I find fascinating is the intellectual milieu Will Arbery creates within a matrix of faith, woven to gether as natural praxis, delivered in a piece of art. I was hooked because the play is, in many ways, the practice of philosophy in action.
