OUR UNIQUE HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE

OUR UNIQUE HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE

Dear Adventurer, Welcome to Authentic Adventures 2017 Special Interest Holidays. This year we have been overwhelmed by positive reviews – thank you to all who have sent such kind feedback. Thank you also to all our superloyal guests. There are now almost 100 who have travelled over eight times and are now eligible for our highest loyalty discount.

Our goal is to give our guests a real adventure while they immerse themselves in their chosen interest with like-minded people. We spend weeks researching and developing new places to visit, seeking out the best hotels, locations and local experts who become our fantastic tour managers.

We continually strive to find locations that are exciting, active and off the beaten track. In 2017 we are adding Mallorca and Malaga in Spain to our painting destinations, Gujarat in India for our singers and a slightly offbeat Tour of Andalucía for our new sightseers. We are also returning to the Alpujarras in Andalucía with a singing holiday – a sweet village where we are looked after by our friend and hotelier Victor.

Over the years, we have joined in festivities from ferias to weddings and eaten in private houses from Italy to India. These magical moments can’t always be timetabled but thanks to our very special local staff and their friends something serendipitous usually occurs.

I believe it is our exceptional tutors and guides who make our holidays stand out from the crowd and the serendipitous moments that make our holidays so special – a shared supper and singsong in Gozo and spontaneous flamenco at Baños del Carmen.

Leaders and tutors All of our people are hugely experienced, not only in their particular discipline, but also as group leaders across a wide range of abilities. They are chosen for their talent, skills, love of teaching, sense of humour and ability to remain calm.

This year John Brough is stepping down as Managing Director and under my direction we welcome a new chapter in the Authentic Adventures story. We feel privileged to have created so many happy memories over the past twenty years and will continue to offer first class holidays for many years to come. Here’s to another twenty years! Zoe Pearson Product and Operations Manager 2

What’s special about Authentic Adventures?

Local guides and tour managers You will be led by one of our local walking guides or assisted by one of our local tour managers. They will not only ensure the smooth-running of the holiday, but make you feel safe and relaxed allowing you to truly immerse yourself in the life, culture, history, flora and fauna of the region. No hidden costs We do our very best to make clear on each holiday what is included. All transport,

ferries and entry fees (when stated) are always included, while dinner with wine and a picnic lunch are usually included. See individual holiday itineraries for exactly what is included. Authentic food and wine The different countries we visit offer wide ranges of local specialities. We specifically request dishes that are both local to the region and in season. Wherever possible, wines are from local vineyards. National Parks and Responsible Tourism Responsible Tourism is important in today’s world. We are proud to have always been committed to giving more to the places we visit than we take. We work closely with National Parks and respect their guidelines. In addition, where possible, we use locallyowned hotels, restaurants and coaches. Our guides reflect these values and, by way of example, several are involved in organic small holdings. Mixing activities Many friends and couples find it hard to share holidays due to their differing interests and hobbies. We regularly offer painting and walking holidays at the same time and in the same location. Many groups of friends come with us to new destinations year after year to share their holidays. Travelling alone Our holidays are perfect for anyone travelling alone and, over the years, many great friendships have been formed. You are sure to enjoy the bond created by the

sharing of common interests. Many of our holidays are single-supplement free and 70% of our guests travel alone. Loyalty discount We value your continued loyalty. Our new discount scheme gives returning guests up to 15% off each holiday. See page 49 for details. Non-activity partners You are very welcome to join us and, increasingly, partners and friends come to enjoy the locations and share in the sociable evenings. Discounts are always available and are detailed on each itinerary page. Special requests Our wonderful leaders will be able to request almost anything. Certainly anniversary flowers, early morning taxis to watch the dawn, recommendations for a day on your own, bike hire or horse rides are all part of a day in the life of an Authentic Adventures tour manager. Staying a bit longer There are some great cities in the regions we visit and it’s very easy for you to enjoy these as an extension to your holiday. If you would like some help with choosing a hotel we’re here to help. Special diets When booking your holiday please let us know if you have any special dietary needs. Once our leaders and tutors are made aware of any special dietary needs, they will always do their very best to ensure these are met.

Choosing your holiday Our office staff know all the leaders and tutors and are familiar with our destinations. They can help you find the holiday that best meets your needs and interests. A typically itinerary Our brochure displays the typical itineraries planned for each of our holidays. Weather conditions, group interests, local events and the tutor will influence the final itinerary. Continued improvement We always strive not only to develop new holidays and destinations but to continually improve them as they evolve. We are very grateful to all our guests who are kind enough to contact us, whether by telephone, letter or email, with suggestions of how we can make our holidays even better and where they would like to join us in the future.

“The overall experience was fantastic – I loved Montenegro and the guide was really excellent. The visits to the family farms were wonderful – they very much contributed to the ‘authentic’ aspect.” Corinne Barnes, Walking, Montenegro, 2016

“It was probably one of the very best holidays I’ve ever had. It had all the right ingredients – excellent location of hotel, brilliant to be able to swim straight off the terrace. The magic combination of Liz Martin and Sharon Galea was a match made in heaven. Can’t fault anything – I loved every minute!”

“Faith Watson was outstanding Carol Hunter, Singing, Gozo, 2016 and was excellent at teaching and improving the songs we learnt. PAINTING HOLIDAYS • AN INTRODUCTION

A passion for painting People come on our painting holidays for a relaxed and enjoyable artistic adventure. Many return year after year to seek out new subjects and new locations. If painting is your passion, join us in four new locations – ten nights painting in Umbria including Titignano, a private estate. In contrast, enjoy a week in the vibrant city of Malaga, rich in cultural heritage, home of Picasso and bursting with art galleries. Painting in Pollenca, Mallorca sounds like heaven – sweet smelling pine trees and rock ringed bays. Finally Istria is perfect for discovering the faded Venetian grandeur of this beautiful country. Our tutors are crucial to the success of our holidays and are hand-picked for their professionalism, teaching experience and humour. For 2017 we welcome Mike Long, Thalia Stones and Amanda Hamilton to our team. There is plenty of individual tuition for budding and accomplished artists alike, and an end-of-week informal ‘exhibition’ – with a glass of local fizz.

Our tutors All our tutors are professional painters, working in a range of media. More importantly they are friendly, patient and encouraging in helping you develop your techniques, whatever your level of experience. They are totally committed, teaching for 6–8 hours per day with free time in the afternoons, although you may take as many breaks as you wish. To help you to assess our tutors and decide who might suit you, we include several examples of their work (pages 19–25). If you want to talk to a specific tutor before booking, we are happy to give you their contact details. In any case your tutor will be in touch with you before the holiday. Group sizes Our groups average nine but do vary. Selecting your holiday Not only do our tutors offer different styles, but the regions provide very different landscapes. To help you choose which holiday our office staff are here to help and our tutors can be contacted by phone. NOTE: Some locations are hilly or involve boat trips, so please check the painting conditions on the itinerary pages and if in doubt call the office. How the holiday works Before departure your tutor will phone to ensure that they are fully aware of your hopes, aspirations and any concerns. To ensure you experience the region to the full we travel to different locations on most days. We include demonstrations, one-to-

one tuition, reviews and an informal endof-week exhibition. Some painters prefer to operate independently of our tutors, just enjoying the social and organisational aspects of the holiday.

working indoors. Don’t forget that rain and its aftermath can offer some of the most inspiring skies and landscapes to the artist. Non-painting partners Increasingly, partners and friends come to enjoy the locations and share in the sociable evenings. Discounts are always available and are detailed on each holiday itinerary page.

Local support staff Our local tour managers with their in-depth local knowledge are with our groups throughout the day. By liaising with the hotel, driving minibuses and helping “Thank you for such a grand guests, tutors are left to c oncentrate on holiday experience. Being a tutoring. PAINTING AND DRAWING DAY WORKSHOPS

PAINTING AND DRAWING DAY WORKSHOPS

The fast track to creative success Nothing will do more for your painting skills than quality time with a professional tutor. We’ve asked our experienced tutors to run a series of workshops for our painting guests, each focusing on a different aspect of putting colour to surface. Their skills and experience will give you the chance to learn a wide range of techniques, tips and tricks of the trade in a short space of time. Our workshop dates are regularly added to our website.

If you find watercolour a daunting prospect, Susie will start from basics, teaching you about what watercolour actually is, demonstrating how easy it can be for all. She will share her top tips for lifting out mistakes, developing shadow and leaving dry paper to act as the contrasting white. You will create a simple landscape or still life and leave with a painting to be proud of by the end of the day. Run by Susanna Bailey at Pegasus Art Supplies, Stroud, Gloucestershire

Measured Drawing – the art of representing what’s there Observe vistas, buildings, people and objects take shape on paper by using a series of measured marks without needing to apply rules of perspective. This is the magic of measured drawing. The day will be about learning and applying this discipline to the creation of accurate, sight size drawings and in controlling the composition of your paintings. Following the course, you may enjoy applying Measured Drawing to the completion of a work or you may find that this awareness of mapping out positions on paper or canvas will help reinforce a looser process. How these skills are used will always be dictated by the interests of the artist. The famous church and Yew tree collection of Painswick provides the perfect subject on which to practice. Run by David Paskett at Painswick Arts Centre, Gloucestershire

Watercolour painting for the positively terrified

Revealing Rothko – a colour mixing workshop If you love the work of Mark Rothko and are an artist yourself, this workshop is for you! Learn about the artist and the methods he used in order to create his celebrated work. The day includes colour mixing exercises, colour gems, resonant greys, warm and cold colours and earth palettes. Run by Susanna Bailey at Pegasus Art Supplies, Stroud, Gloucestershire

David has followed careers in both the musical and visual arts since leaving art college, working as a professional painter for the last 30 years. WALKING HOLIDAYS • AN INTRODUCTION 28

WALKING HOLIDAYS • AN INTRODUCTION

Off the beaten track Whichever scenery you enjoy, there is an Authentic Adventure for you. Our walking holidays follow rivers and coastlines, traverse mountains, hills, forests and lava plains and weave through the fields of crops that are the lifeblood of the regions. Whether you enjoy a ramble or a hike, our walking holidays are graded from the leisurely walks to the more strenuous, steeper terrain. We’ve some new guides to introduce this year – Illija Milos will be leading new holidays on the stunning Istrian peninsula of northern Croatia, via vineyards, islands, waterfalls and lakes. Milan Rakocevic builds on successful walks in 2016 from Kotor, Montenegro to the extraordinary Lake Vardar, a highlight of this adventure. Our fantastic team of guides in Italy continue to invite our guests into the cultural heart of their region and share their passion for the terrain and people. As ever, there are walks for everyone, no matter what your level of experience, and we never forget to offer food and wine tasting along the way!

Our guides We use experienced local leaders. We cannot emphasise enough the value of being guided on walks designed by leaders who live in the locality. Because of their love of the regions, they are both enthusiastic and knowledgeable and will share with you the regional experiences that make our holidays so special. Meet them on pages 33–34. Your safety Our leaders are first-aid qualified and carry first-aid kits and mobile phones. Group size Our groups are typically between six and twelve and therefore have little impact on the locals and their environment. What you need to take We recommend that you wear walking boots. You will also need a small day sack for your food and water and although we hate to mention it, waterproofs. Many guests use walking poles especially when

descending. We send out an equipment list with your booking confirmation but if you have any queries about equipment, please give us a call. Selecting your holiday Your choice will be based on the regions in which you’re interested, the dates available and the grade that suits you. When selecting your grade it is worth remembering that these holidays are far more than a good walk. Walking within your ability enables you to enjoy the whole experience. If in doubt please phone us. How the holiday works We lead five full days of guided walks

during the week, several of which start from the hotel. When required, we take airconditioned coaches or public buses at the start and finish of the walks. All associated costs with this transport are met by us. Non-walking partners Increasingly, partners and friends come to enjoy the locations and share in the sociable evenings. Discounts are always available and are detailed on each holiday itinerary page. Walking grades Whether it’s a leisurely walk or something more strenuous, you’ll be out for most of the day. + indicates either more ascent or more demanding terrain.

Guides who go that extra mile to make your holiday In each location we seek out local guides who are not only experienced leaders but who have a passion for their country, its culture and food. We cannot emphasise enough the value of being guided on walks designed by leaders who live in the locality. Because of their love of the regions, they are both enthusiastic and knowledgeable and will share with you, whenever possible, the spontaneous cultural events that make our holidays so special. On occasions they are even known to read poetry…

Stefano Spinetti Stefano grew up in the mountains of Abruzzo, central Italy. With a degree in Animal Biology and an academic background in archaeology, he has a great breadth of knowledge. He has over 20 years experience as a mountain leader and his explorer’s spirit has taken him to every continent. He loves to share his country’s culture, history, and natural places with our guests.

Marianna Polverino

Cristiano Pignataro

Marianna grew up in Ischia. With a degree in ecotourism, she likes walking through vineyards, tasting good food. She is passionate about protecting the culture and traditions of the island through events and management of the island paths. She has a sunny disposition and is keen to share her love of Ischia – a place that is full of colours, aromas, folklore, breathtaking views and much more.

Cristiano grew up in Fiano, near Rome. A lover of the outdoors, he has a degree in Earth Education and Nature. The desire to travel and spend his days outdoors led him to Authentic Adventures. He not only interprets the language, but also knows a great deal about the history, geology and culture as he leads his walking trips in Italy.

Federico Ferrara

Martina Caroli

A professional guide for many years, Federico loves guiding walkers, with a special focus on the lesser-known places that retain their charm and authenticity. A member of the Italian Geographical Society and passionate about nature and travel, he has lived in Spain and travelled Central and South America, convinced that walking allows one to discover and taste the true essence of places and cultures.

A zoologist and passionate naturalist, Martina took a degree in Natural Sciences, specialising in the study of the larger, highmountain, mammals. She later earned a master’s degree in Sustainable Tourism and Ecotourism and is now a nature guide who is lucky enough to combine her greatest passions – walking in nature and trying to convey to our guests her infinite passion for animals.

Local sightseeing guides who open the door to authentic experiences Our Tour Managers are key to the success of our new sightseeing holidays. Without them we could never gain access to private gardens, quirky restaurants, tapas bars and artisan food producers. In small groups, our guide will take you to both key cultural sites, but also to off the beaten track locations that you might never discover on your own. That’s the magic of our sightseeing holidays. A certain level of fitness is required for walking on our sightseeing holidays

Milan Rakocevic

Simon Harding

Our walking guide in Montenegro, Milan is a licenced mountaineering and cultural tours guide. He trained as a journalist at the University of Belgrade, but in 2008 changed career paths to follow his passion for walking and adventure. He has already garnered very positive feedback from our guests for his attention to detail and care for individual guests.

Always a keen walker and lover of the outdoors, she and her husband, Dave, built a small family hotel in a quiet village and now they enjoy sharing the history, culture and landscapes of their new home with their guests.

Maslinka studied Tourism in Pula and has been a Tour Guide in Istria since 2003. She speaks fluent English and German and loves hiking and singing in a local choir. She is an experienced guide with a kind and helpful nature.

Seeking the heartbeat of a country In recent years we have been asked to run sightseeing and cultural tours to the wonderful locations we use. Our tour leaders are passionate about where they live and want to share special places and authentic experiences with our guests. In small groups they’ll take you to key cultural sights, as well as the authentic, off the beaten track locations that you might never discover – private gardens, lively tapas bars, quirky restaurants, colourful music shows, art exhibitions, artisan producers whose produce we’ll taste. We dig a little deeper into the cultural heart of the countries – that’s the magic of our sightseeing holidays. A free day is usually included in the itinerary for shopping, swimming or simply relaxing. After 19 years building up invaluable contacts and a catalogue of special locations, we think our sightseeing tours are rather special.

Our tour leaders We cannot emphasise enough the importance of our local and passionate Tour Leaders. Without them, our authentic sightseeing and cultural tours would not exist. The detail that they bring to each itinerary is what makes our tours extra special. Their in-depth local knowledge enables our groups to access locations that are otherwise off limits. All leaders are certified and trustworthy and always carry mobile phones.

Group sizes We keep our group sizes to a minimum to ensure a very personalised and unique holiday experience. Maximum group size of six on our Tour of Andalucia, and slightly larger groups on other tours. Selecting your holiday Our sightseeing holidays vary enormously and are specific to the region they are based. For more detailed information, please contact our office staff who know the locations and Tour Leader. How the holiday works We have made sure that our sightseeing holidays include all the essential cultural elements of the region or country you are visiting. Not only will you visit the key architectural sights, you will receive some historical background, visit any

cultural events that tie in with the date you are visiting ie. art exhibition, concert or festival. Beyond this, your Tour Leader will invite you to taste regional food, meet local artisan producers, take gentle walks to unusual points of interest, and anything else detailed in our itineraries. It’s an immersive experience.

SINGING HOLIDAYS • AN INTRODUCTION 40

SINGING HOLIDAYS • AN INTRODUCTION

Joyful, inclusive and magical acappella singing holidays 2016 was our most popular year yet, with consistently outstanding feedback from our guests. Highlights included singing in Sri Lanka and Gozo, with many guests already booked for this year! The introduction of Abbie Lathe offers even more choice of Natural Voice / acappella tutors for our guests. Singers are spoilt for choice in 2017 as we return to Gozo, Kerala, Bulgaria, Umbria and venture further afield to Gujarat the ‘jewel of western India’ where there’s a chance to see ‘big cats’ and stay in luxury tented accommodation whilst on safari! As ever, we’ll try to include singing with a local choir and visiting any local festivals. Singing together in a large group can be an empowering and spiritual experience with obvious health benefits – coupled with gorgeous locations, it’s a winning combination!

Our tutors Our singing holidays go from strength to strength, largely due to the passion and commitment of our primary tutor, Faith Watson. With the expansion of our programme, we have introduced new tutors in recent years, carefully selected for their expertise, teaching experience and enthusiasm. This year Abbie Lathe joins us, bursting with energy and soulfulness, with several albums and varied projects to her name. You will be learning from some of the best acapella choir leaders in the country. There is always a friendly, supportive environment and a great sense of fun. Group sizes Our maximum group size is 25, but holidays often run on smaller numbers. We welcome everyone who loves to sing! Selecting your holiday We welcome everyone on our acapella singing holidays, no matter what your level of skill. Even the most novice singers can

join our groups and your tutor will have you happily harmonising in just a few days. All the songs are taught by ear, so there is no need to be able to read music or be part of a choir. How the holiday works Before your departure your tutor will phone to ensure they are fully aware of your experience, and make sure you are comfortable with all aspects of the holiday. It’s a chance to discuss any details about the holiday or ask any questions. Our groups tend to sing most mornings, and take afternoon excursions, gentle walks, visits to vineyards etc. depending on location. Our tutors have the authority to be flexible with the programme should the group wish to change anything. Local support staff Our local tour managers with their in-depth local knowledge are with our groups throughout the day. By liaising with the hotel, driving minibuses and helping guests, tutors are left to concentrate on

tutoring. Their local knowledge enables us to find unique locations, local choirs and groups that we can join, excellent restaurants and colourful local events. What if it rains? Rain is rare in our locations and we choose the dates carefully. However, should it arrive, we have excellent facilities for singing indoors. Our tutors and Tour Managers have the flexibility to alter the itinerary to ensure the best holiday experience for our guests. Non singing partners Increasingly, partners and friends come to enjoy the locations and share in the sociable evenings. Discounts are always available and are detailed on each holiday itinerary page. Accessibility Some locations are hilly or involve boat trips, so please check the itinerary pages and if in doubt, call the office. Many of our singing holidays include gentle walks and exursions.

Joyful morning singing sessions are complimented by half day excursions and safaris. Gujarat has a long tradition of producing gorgeous cotton textiles, and we’ll visit rural textile villages to get a sense of this history and admire the fabrics. Arrival day From the airport you will be transferred to the Khirasara Palace in Rajkot. Rajkot – three nights The Khirasara Palace has a 450 year-old heritage – from its elevated position, it’s not a bad place to sing. Additionally we’ll head into nearby Rajkot for some sightseeing which includes the Watson Museum, the Shri Ramakrishna Ashram and the Mahatma Gandhi High School. Sasan Gir – three nights The Lion Safari Camp in the Sasan Gir National Park is our base in luxury, tented accommodation. We sing in the camp, relax for an afternoon and enjoy a safari. MEET YOUR SINGING LEADERS

MEET YOUR SINGING LEADERS

Some of the best acapella singing leaders in the country Our singing holidays go from strength to strength, largely due to the passion and commitment of our primary tutor, Faith Watson, ‘a gifted musician who makes everyone feel valued’. 2016 has been our most successful year to date with many memorable adventures including Sri Lanka and our first trip to Gozo with new tutor Liz Martin. Guy Wilson is back and leading a group to the Alpujarras, a region we know very well. We look forward to meeting old friends and unlocking the musical heart and authenticity of this region. We welcome Abbie Lathe, an experienced singing tutor, with a diverse musical career encompassing BBC and Disney soundtracks, live performance in folk, blues and reggae and seven personal albums. She brings her own unique energy and soulfulness to our team. You will be learning from some of the best acapella choir leaders in the country, who believe that everyone, no matter what their level of skill, can enjoy the magic of singing in harmony.
