ear Travellers,
This is the A&C 2016 Original Collection Brochure. I couldn’t be more excited to present this, the backbone of our tour programme. Here at A&C, we have spent the summer researching, planning and (if we are lucky!) visiting many of places you will find listed within these pages. At A&C, we are of the firm belief that wines are best experienced where they are grown. Imagine sitting on the terrace of a Tuscan winery, sipping a vintage that is the distillation of centuries of craft and tradition, while the sun sets over the green vine-covered hills. From the South Downs to Chile, our tours give you the chance to taste incredible wines, whilst meeting the people who make them and whose passion is infectious. Whether you are a connoisseur or just curious, Wine Tours are a wonderful way to travel – you really get under the skin of a region. Over almost 20 years at A&C I have had the privilege of visiting countless beautiful places, made many friends and tasted more wonderful wines than perhaps is good for me!

Who Travels On Our Tours?
Superb Accommodation
Unparalleled Expertise
Bespoke Experiences
If you enjoy fine wine and have a thirst to learn more, these holidays are perfect for you. The level of wine knowledge varies within our groups - you may be looking to add to an already extensive cellar or may simply like the idea of tasting great wines, where they were made. Everyone is welcome to join us on tour. You are guaranteed to be travelling with people who share your interests and you only have to dine alone if you wish to. You will be joined by an Expert Wine Guide and Tour Manager. The Wine Guides are some of the most respected figures in the wine industry - award-winning writers, broadcasters and Masters of Wine. They are perfectly placed to introduce you to the best producers, the finest wines and the overall story of the estates we visit. The Tour Managers work hard behind-the-scenes to ensure that you have a hassle free holiday.
Small Group
We spend a lot of time and resources sourcing the best accommodation to compliment our tours. We stay in beautiful boutique hotels, charming châteaux, private wine-estates and on-board luxury yachts. Many of the hotels we stay in are also home to renowned restaurants. Wherever possible, we stay in central locations, so should you wish to explore the area further - you don’t have to go far.
We’ve had the pleasure of arranging private wine tours since we first began touring in 1986. From American wine clubs travelling to Alsace and Argentina; to exclusive groups of wine connoisseurs from Hong Kong touring Burgundy; then there was that Irish wine merchant’s wedding in Portugal... basically, we’ve arranged it all! If you have an idea for your perfect tour - give us a call or email us with the details - with enough notice we can create something perfect just for you.
We only take small groups on our Original tours. We think this is the perfect size to ensure you enjoy good company on tour - but small enough to retain a personal experience. This is a holiday after all. You will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions during wine tastings and visits.
Optional Cultural Excursions
In addition to wine visits, we always include optional culture and historical excursions on our tours. Led by the Tour Manager or Expert Guide, these give a more rounded picture of a region. As well as a break from wine, should you need one! Detail of excursions are available on our website.

Discover Biodynamics - the oldest, anti-chemical agricultural movement - in Burgundy home of some of the most celebrated fine wines in the world. Most of the Biodynamic process occurs in the vineyard, before the winemaking begins. Everything from planting to harvesting has to be done at a specific time, and only on certain days. Join us as we learn more about the process by tasting a superb range of completely chemical free Burgundies. This beautiful wine region covers much of the Eastern side of France, from Chablis in the north, to Beaujolais in the south. We stay in Beaune for the majority of our tour. The beautiful town is a maze of cobbled medieval streets - lined with wonderful wine shops, tempting delicatessens and interesting museums.

“Wine is the most civilized thing in the world.” Ernest Hemingway.
Itinerary Day 1 – Monday, 18th April We arrive in Beaune. We dine at Maison Joseph Drouhin tonight. Founded in 1756, this famed house has built a reputation for wines that are among the very best of the modern style of red and white Burgundies. Drouhin produces wines of great finesse and elegance, while maintaining richness and flavour. Meals: Dinner Day 2 – Tuesday, 19th April Our first visit is to Domaine Arlaud. This elite family domaine practices totally organic viticulture, eliminating tractors for tilling the vineyards in favour of horses. These wines are concentrated, silky Burgundies. We stop for lunch at Domaine Dujac, one of the greatest estates on the Côte d’Or. The approach to wine here is fascinating, with their own blend of tradition and innovation. We continue to Domaine Rossignol-Trapet. The reputation of their Grand cru wines has been reinforced by the introduction of biodynamic principals. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 3 – Wednesday, 20th April We begin at Chateau Monthelie this morning. The manor house has wonderful, glazed, coloured tiles which date back to the 14th century. Monthelie wines tend to be slightly more rustic than those of the neighbouring village of Volnay. We enjoy lunch at Domaine Olivier Leflaive today. Their wines are textbook examples of each appellation. We continue to Domaine de Villaine this afternoon. This small, sunny valley has a rich and lengthy tradition of producing quality wines which reflect their exceptional terroir. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Day 4 – Thursday, 21st April After a morning tasting, we make our way to Maison JC Boisset for lunch. The vineyards are split with two thirds in the Côte de Nuits and one third in the Côte de Beaune. JeanClaude Boisset has been unquestionably the most successful Burgundy négociant of recent years and is considered to be the fifth largest wine company in France. We will meet their famous winemaker Pascal Marchand who will hopefully join us for a tasting. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Day 5 – Friday, 22nd April We enjoy a final visit to Domaine Alex Gambal this morning. The American producer follows a philosophy of respecting the character of each appellation and vintage. He believes that good winemaking, although crucial, should be secondary to the quality of the grapes they use to produce their wines. We continue to Paris, for our return home. Meals: Breakfast

The vineyards of Provence date back 2600 years, making Provence one of the oldest wine producing regions in France. This historic region sits along the Mediterranean coast of France, bordered by the Rhone River to the west and the Côte d’Azur on the east. It is the only place in France to specialise in Rosé and is home to the sole research institute dedicated to the style. One of the joys of travelling to Provence is soaking up the stunning variety of landscapes: fields of lavender, ancient olive groves, cliff-top roads, maquis-cloaked hills and snow-tipped mountains... where else offers such variety of beauty? Food is a central part of French life, and you certainly won’t go hungry on our tour of Provence. Indulge in glorious Mediterranean cooking – everything from simple bowls of soupe au pistou to richly rewarding ratatouille - bon appétit!

Viticulture as we know it arrived in Southern France with the Greeks in the 4th century BC. But it was the Romans who really established the vineyards and reputation of the area using the Rhône as their highway through France. The Northern vineyards start just around Vienne and then the Southern start again at Avignon. In the north, the red grape is Syrah and the main white Viognier; in the south a veritable hodge-podge of varieties is planted. This tour offers a chance to compare the complete wines of the Rhône. You have plenty of free time to explore the cities of Lyon and Avignon and the village of Châteauneufdu-Pape. Aside from the glorious grape, the Rhone Valley offers a captivating landscape… raw Mediterranean beauty at its best; hillsides covered with maquis, scrub oaks and wild French olives, and dotted with cypress trees.

Itinerary Day 1 – Monday, 18th July We arrive in time for our first visit to the family run estate of Vallarom. They produce some inviting wines from Pinot Bianco, Moscato Giallo, Marzemino and more unusually Syrah. Meals: Breakfast & Lunch Day 3 – Wednesday, 20th July Today we enjoy a tasting at Alois Lageder, founded in 1855 by the current owner’s great grandfather. Meals: Breakfast & Lunch Day 4 – Thursday, 21st July In the village of Terlano we visit the eponymous producer, Cantina Terlano. They own some vineyards in the best locations and keep very low yields. Meals: Breakfast & Lunch Day 5 – Friday, 22nd July We travel to Cantina Prod. San Michele, possibly the most dynamic estate of the region. Their wines are outstanding, vintage after vintage. Historically, the Veneto wine region has struggled against the impression of cheap Valpolicella and Soave in basic Italian trattorias. The reality these days is a very different story. There are so many tempting wines available to try and they are very food friendly. Piemonte is most famous for its red wines; but we also find fresh whites on tour - the Arneis variety is particularly delicious - perfumed with notes of apple and pear. Our base in Verona is the ideal place to explore the city’s history and is within short walking distance of the Arena. Great wine deserves great food… luckily for us it’s plentiful here in Piemonte, the origin of the Slow Food movement. The food is elegant, rich, diverse and full of flavour. Throughout our trip, your eyes will be delighted by the most beautiful countryside - the tour is a feast for all the senses.

SICILY Tour an ancient viticultural haven with a history stretching back 4000 years…
Highlights ◊◊ Taste wines from the island’s leading producers - excellent red and white wines from a variety of grapes, as well as superb sweet wines ◊◊ Dine at several wine estates and enjoy their wines carefully matched to the food ◊◊ Enjoy free time to explore Sicilian towns and cities such as Noto, Marsala and Palermo ◊◊ Visit an estate in a thoroughly unique position – the lower slopes of Mt Etna

Do you prefer red or white? Perhaps you have a sweet tooth? It doesn’t matter, Sicily caters to every taste. The red wines here are dark, and richly fruity. The whites wines are textured with profound, mineral qualities. Then there are the sweet wines: Marsala is the famous one of course, but their Moscato is certainly worthy of trying. We’ll try them all throughout our 9-day tour. Located at the toe of Italy, from 750BC Sicily was a very important Greek Colony. Almost every empire has ruled the island at some point in history and their influence can be found throughout the island. Sicily is bursting at the seams with artistic and architectural gems - Arab domes and arches, Byzantine mosaics, baroque stuccowork and Norman palace walls. The island truly holds an embarrassment of artistic riches.

UMBRIA Explore Umbria as the wine region emerges from Tuscany’s shadow…
Highlights ◊◊ Taste fabulous, relatively undiscovered wines ◊◊ Enjoy delicious food and wine pairings over private lunches at wine estates with winemakers and winery owners ◊◊ Umbria, like Tuscany, opts for simple wholesome cooking - the region is also home to black truffles in the autumn ◊◊ We visit and enjoy tastings at a selection of the best Umbrian producers, including Lungarotti and Arnaldo Caprai
40
As a wine region, Umbria has undergone quite a few changes in recent years. Producers have started paying more attention to the vineyards. This is being reflected in the quality of the wine from other producers. In the past, Umbria has been often overshadowed by its more famous neighbouring region of Tuscany. Gone are the days of being left behind on the international scene - as it now emerges as a contender in its own right. The region certainly deserves its nickname “the green heart of Italy”. You’ll find some of the most glorious countryside surrounding the hilltop towns of Orvieto, Assisi, Gubbio and Perugia. Near Orvieto we will enjoy namesake white wines… whilst further south we enjoy the wonderful wines of Montefalco made from Sagrantino, producing brambly red wines, from which a passito wine is also made.

Named “the land of wine,” by the Greeks, the wines of the Campania region were adored by the Romans. Southern Italian wines may not be household names like their Piedmont or Tuscan cousins, but they are just as bold, full-bodied, and satisfying. Wine has been produced here for more than 4000 years, but production languished. In more recent years, the majority of wine produced has been sold to France and Germany for blends - but all that is changing. Naples is a city undergoing a well deserved renaissance - with many indigenous varieties waiting to be discovered. Aside from the wine, Naples has a wonderful history, superb architecture and gorgeous landscape… with Vesuvius looming large over the bay. You couldn’t pick a better time to visit than New Year. Neapolitans have more joie de vivre than most, and it’s in full effect at this time of year.

This is a different kind of wine experience. Malta’s wine-making legacy stretches back to Phoenician times; but until the last century, most Maltese wines were made from grapes or concentrate imported from Italy. That has thankfully changed in recent years. A home-grown renaissance has taken place – in large, thanks to the reappearance of native grapes. You may not have encountered these wines before – but we know you’ll be delighted by their quality. We’ll tour wonderful family-run estates; including Malta’s most awarded winery. You have plenty of free time to enjoy the island too. The coastal scenery is mesmerising – the sea follows wherever we go. There’s so much to see and do: for every hidden garden and Palazzo-lined street, there’s an exquisite church waiting. The island serves as the perfect accompaniment to the truly delicious wine.

Madeira wine enjoyed an esteemed international reputation in the 18th and 19th centuries, but the style waned in popularity over the next century in Britain. However, these exquisite wines are capable of incredible ageing, and once you enjoy a drop of the good stuff, you’ll be a life-long devotee. Not just a feast for your palate, this tour is a feast for your eyes too. The volcanic island has dramatic vertiginous cliffs, topped by lush green vegetation. The diverse flora of the island has attracted many famous visitors such as Winston Churchill, Sissi and George Bernard Shaw. This is the perfect spot for a mid-winter break. Pick up a little sunshine on an island with one of the most equable climates in the world.

“To drink Madeira is to sip history with every glass.” Sir Winston Churchill
Itinerary Day 1 – Monday, 14th November We arrive in time for dinner at The Madeira Wine Company. In 1989 the port shipping family of Symington invested heavily in the MWC, which produces famous brands such as Cossart Gordon, Blandy’s and Leacock & Miles. MWC is the largest and most influential of the Madeiran wine producers but strives to maintain the separate identities of each house. Meals: Dinner Day 2 – Tuesday, 15th November Our first visit is to the largest family producer on the island, Henriques & Henriques. Their cellars are found in Camara dos Lobos. The Chairman John Cossart hosts a generous technical tasting of all the different styles of Madeira - from the five-year-old medium-rich through the ten-year-old Bual to 15 -year-old Malmsey. We stop for lunch at the family run Barbeito Madeira. Their Frasqueiras are particularly special. We continue to Rio Frio for a tour and tasting this afternoon. Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Day 3 – Wednesday, 16th November We enjoy a gentle start, wandering through Quinta do Palheiro’s wonderful gardens. They were laid out in the 18th century by a French garden designer for the original owner, Conde de Carvalhal. The property was bought by the Blandys in 1884, and Mildred Blandy was responsible for their upkeep and for introducing many new species such as proteas from South Africa. The rest of the day is yours, to explore Funchal. Madeira’s largest city is known for its colourful gardens, and cobbled old town, with its 15th-century cathedral. It also boasts a number of superb traditional Portuguese restaurants. The city has so much to offer. Meals: Breakfast & Lunch Day 4 – Thursday, 17th November After enjoying a morning levada (aqueduct) walk, we continue to D’Oliveira. Pereira d’Oliveira’s excellent wines are seldom seen on the UK market. They have a wonderful range of wines blended from several grape varieties and have a good library of older vintages dating back to 1850! In one of their lodges in Funchal they also have a shop which is an excellent source of typical Madeiran specialities such as the cake bolo di miel [honey cake]. Our final visit is to Barros & Sousa, one of the most highly regarded producers of top quality Madeira, whose old cellars are in the centre of Funchal. The scale of production here is very different to that at MWC, and the company remains totally in family control and is completely traditional in all aspects of their winemaking. We will join together for a final meal tonight. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Day 5 – Friday, 18th November We return home. Meals: Breakfast

In the 19th century Rioja was a region famed for white not red wines - its evolution influenced by Bordeaux. Our tour explores the neighbouring Spanish regions of La Rioja and Castilla y León which are home to two of the country’s most renowned wine producing regions Rioja and Ribera del Duero respectively. Castilla y León has some impressive landmarks and attractions, in particular the Burgos Cathedral, Segovia’s fairy tale Alcazar and the castle in Peñafiel which when lit up at night appears as if it is floating above the town. We have plenty of time to explore the traditional towns and villages of Rioja and Ribera, as well as the UNESCO World Heritage city of Segovia, where you stay at an elegant town house on the main square.

According to Spanish tradition, you should eat a grape (or uva) at every chime of the countdown clock to midnight ... We’re quite certain that a sip of wine at each stroke will bring you just as much luck for the year ahead but we will enjoy the traditional uvas too. During our tour, we visit pioneering producers including Miguel Torres; and find out more about Spanish bubbly with exclusive access to a Cava producer. We welcome the New Year in style during a Gala dinner party; and the next day is yours to explore the city itself. The enchanting seaside city oozes culture, and is filled with glorious architecture. OUR TOUR COLLECTIONS We offer many different wine tours - give us a call to receive brochures for our other collections...
WINE ETC. Our Wine Etc. tours include everything our original tours do, with you guessed it - something extra thrown in. Enjoy fantastic food, opera experiences, and walks through the great vineyards of Europe;
Gourmet
Let the food take centre stage. Gourmet doesn’t just mean Michelin starred restaurants, or lavish meals in extravagant settings. Enjoy everything from hearty regional fare to nouvelle cuisine. Wine is still important of course, but our focus lies on regional wines. We visit estates who don’t just make, but “grow” their wines too.
Opera
Opera is synonymous with cosmopolitan cities and wine appreciation is a deeply ingrained in the culture. Spend your days exploring stunning vineyards and enjoy evenings at world-famous venues, watching passionate performances... There are no early starts and plenty of time to explore.
Vineyard Walks
These aren’t walking holidays that pass through wine regions - these are genuine wine tours on foot. Explore the vineyards; discover differences in terroir and aspect; and learn more during our tastings. There’s just one thing to remember on tour… stop and look around you: the scenery is sure to be breath-taking.
“There are thousands of wines that can take over our minds. Don’t think all ecstasies are the same!” Rumi 62
CHAMPAGNE These are the tours we started with, back in 1986… short breaks to our favourite place in the world, Champagne! On these enjoyable, informative weekends, we take you to our personally recommended selection of Champagne Houses. Visit famous names that forged Champagne’s reputation as well as our choice of the smaller houses and growers. We want to show you as broad a spectrum of Champagne as possible – an Expert Wine Guide will accompany you on tour and compare well known brands, to show you the various styles of Champagne and the unique flavours that come from individual villages. Stay in modern 4* city centre hotels in Reims - the entire Champagne region has UNESCO World Heritage Site status - there are plenty of monuments, museums, galleries, shops, bistros and gourmet restaurants to keep you entertained during your free time!
“Remember gentlemen, it’s not just France we are fighting for - it’s Champagne!” Winston Churchill Wine improves with age. Travel improves with wine.
RESERVE Join us to visit properties that are normally absolutely closed to visitors. Taste the finest wines from the finest vintages and visit ‘unvisitable domaines’: If you have a passion for fine wine, these unique tours are for you. Enjoy wine visits and tastings of the very highest calibre. It’s not just the wines that are exclusive, our wine guides are too. Leading the tours, you’ll find the most famous and respected names in the industry, with award winning books and a variety of accolades to their names. The exclusivity doesn’t end there… We stay at luxury chateaux and hotels, or as private guests of wine estates that are closed to the general public. We also dine at Michelin starred restaurants and authentic bistros, where local wine merchants and connoisseurs eat. Our small party sizes means that you will have plenty of time to get to know your Wine Guide and ask questions without in any way feeling inhibited and gain a greater understanding of the wines. Across our unique selection of tours, you can: taste Salon Champagne - produced from only the greatest vintages in small quantities; attend the world famous Hospice de Beaune charity wine auction; or explore the Label Room at Château Mouton Rothschild, filled with original artwork dating back to 1945. These are ultimate wine tours.
CRUISE What do you get when you cross a super-yacht with delicious wine? A wonderful holiday of course. Cruise along a relaxed meandering route - from Nice to Corsica, Tuscany to Sardinia - experiencing culture, cuisine and wine tradition. Join us aboard Le Ponant, a vessel crafted to respect the tradition of famous sailing yachts. Small ship sailing is a joy - they put their larger cruise ship cousins to shame. Under full sail, gliding over the sea, you are sure to fall under Le Ponant’s spell.
