SMALL SHIP CRUISES – MEDITERRANEAN 2020 Appreciate the historical highlights of Croatia and Greece in a sublimely relaxing way From just £1,795 per person • Dalmatian Coast, with exclusive Andante charters • Athens & the Peloponnese

SAIL AWAY ON A SMALL SHIP CRUISE IN 2020 Gloriously relaxing and evocative of a more civilised era of travel, there are few better ways to discover the ancient treasures of the Mediterranean than aboard a small ship cruise vessel. The three ships we have brought together in this collection each present a yacht cruise experience, with just 18-24 cabins and the ability to berth in smaller, more characterful ports of call than the mega-ships. M/S Princess Aloha and M/S Equator, both exclusive to Andante Travels, explore the richly historic and splendidly scenic Dalmatian Coast and islands, and M/S Galileo circumnavigates the Peloponnese from Athens, making stops at iconic classical sites such as Delphi and Olympia. Dalmatian Coast cruises include a world-class Andante Guide Lecturer; the Greek cruise is guided by an excellent onboard archaeology specialist, but as such we would describe this as a gentler introduction to these millennia-old wonders. Don’t miss your chance to cruise the great coastlines of the Eastern Mediterranean with Andante Travels in 2020.

CROATIA’S DALMATIAN COAST

ATHENS & THE PELOPONNESE

Studded with picturesque inlets, uniquely fascinating islands and iconic cities, the Adriatic Coast of Croatia – ancient Dalmatia – comprises one of the most bewitching regions of the Mediterranean. A small ship cruise is absolutely the best way to explore this collection of historical and cultural gems.

The cradle of democracy, science, medicine, theatre, sport and architecture, the modern world owes Ancient Greece a monumental debt. These and other great endeavours are brought thrillingly to life on a cruise around the Peloponnese peninsula, following a two-night stay in Athens.

Both of our Dalmatian cruises make stops at key highlights. Dubrovnik is world-renowned for its jewel-like beauty, which inspired George Bernard Shaw to acclaim it “paradise on earth”. Instantly recognisable for its promontory setting, red-roofed houses and massive encircling stone walls, Dubrovnik is a joy to explore for its palaces, churches, squares and towers, with footsteps ringing off its ancient streets. Split is the other geographical ‘book-end’ for our cruises – a bustling seafront city justly famed for the UNESCO World Heritage-listed old town, which occupies the mighty palace of the 3rd century Roman Emperor Diocletian. Among the islands, Korčula, thought to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, boasts a perfectly preserved medieval town, excellent local wine and a colourful culture. Brač is beautifully scenic, with golden beaches and secluded coves, perfect for those who enjoy a swim, and the town of Pučišća is known for its stonemasonry tradition. Hvar, beloved by the international jet-set, is noted for its lavender fields and crystal clear coastal waters as well as for Hvar Town, a sort of Dubrovnik in miniature, with its Gothic palaces and marble streets enclosed within sturdy fortifications. Mljet, Croatia’s greenest island, entrances with its natural beauty, particularly in the forests of Mljet National Park. Other stops include the delightful Elaphiti Islands for a refreshing swim; Biševo, home to the captivating Blue Cave (weather dependent); Vis, where the remains of a Roman thermal palace may be found; and, on the mainland, Slano, for oyster tasting; and Omiš, whose fortresses are silent stone reminders of the power of the pirates who once made their homes and fortunes here.

Image left to right: Limeni Village in Mani, Harbour of the old Adriatic island town of Hvar, and the ancient town of Monemvasia in Greece

The standout highlight of the Greek capital is the Acropolis and its extraordinary collection of temples, which embody the Periclean ideals of the Golden Age of Athens (460-430 BCE). The port of Athens, Piraeus, is the start and end point of the Peloponnese circumnavigation, and stops are made at the healing sanctuary of Epidaurus, with its magnificent theatre (included); the wild and beautiful Mani peninsula, immortalised in the writings of Patrick Leigh Fermor (included); Delphi, one of the most spectacular and revered sites of the ancient world (included); the Bronze Age city of Agamemnon, Mycenae (optional); the sacred island of Delos (optional); and ancient Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games (optional).

DALMATIAN ISLAND MEDLEY Aboard M/S Princess Aloha 8 Days

From £1,795pp

3rd - 10th May 2020

Activity Level

This outstanding value for money round-trip cruise aboard the comfortable M/S Princess Aloha takes in every key highlight of the Dalmatian Coast and islands. The fascinating history of the region is brought to life by your accompanying Andante Travels Guide Lecturer – and there is so much to tell, from the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s retirement in his homeland to the stonemasons of Brač, who shaped his colossal palace; the pomp and majesty of ducal Dubrovnik to the renegade pirate ‘dukes’ of Omiš, who terrorised the Adriatic for three centuries. There are also opportunities to swim in secluded coves, appreciate the natural beauty of Mljet National Park, and explore the perfectly-preserved medieval walled towns of Hvar and Korčula.

Split Brač

Omiš Pučišća

Hvar Korčula Mljet Dubrovnik

Day One | London – Dubrovnik We fly to Dubrovnik and transfer to the port to embark M/S Princess Aloha. Before our welcome dinner, our Guide Lecturer will give an overview of the Dalmatian Coast’s history as well as the tour itinerary for the upcoming week. Day Two | Kočula Early in the morning, we set sail for the island of Korčula, with a swimming stop en route (weather permitting). Korčula was reputedly the birthplace of legendary explorer Marco Polo, and in many ways its postcard-perfect old town, with its towers and turrets, narrow cobbled lanes and stone townhouses, seems little changed in the centuries since. A walking tour tells its story, and then there is time to make your own explorations and choose a restaurant for dinner (independent). Be sure to try the local Grk wine, a high-quality dry white made from grapes grown nowhere else in the world. Day Three | Pučišća (Brač) The island of Brač has made a unique contribution to world culture over thousands of years – the white stone from its quarries has been used in the building of, amongst other iconic buildings, Diocletian’s Palace, The White House and Budapest’s Parliament. The stonemasonry tradition is still strong and in the village of Pučišća, we visit the Stonemasonry School to learn more about the skills involved in sculpting Brač stone. Back onboard M/S Princess Aloha, the Captain hosts drinks and a special dinner. Day Four | Omiš - Split For 300 years from the 12th century to the 15th century, the pirates of Omiš were the masters of the Adriatic and one of the most powerful maritime forces of the entire Mediterranean. Superb shipbuilders and sailors, they crafted a fleet perfect for stealth attacks and even preyed on the likes of the Papacy and the Crusaders. The pirate ‘dukes’ reigned from this mainland stronghold and, even when their hegemony fell to the mighty navy of the Venetian Republic, they still managed to hold fast in their fortresses for 24 years. Some of these great edifices still stand and may be explored on a walking tour, after which we board a small boat to sail into Cetina River Canyon, a protected nature area. After lunch, M/S Princess Aloha sails on to Split, where a guided tour takes in the attractive seafront promenade and the vast palace complex of the 3rd century Roman Emperor Diocletian, which now comprises much of the old town of Split. With plenty of excellent restaurant choices, the evening is at leisure in Split. Before our arrival, our

Guide Lecturer will give a talk on Diocletian and the later Roman Empire of the 3rd and 4th centuries AD.

Included in your holiday price

Day Five | Bol (Brač) - Stari Grad (Hvar) The Golden Horn, at the small town of Bol back on the island of Brač, is one of Croatia’s great beaches – a 530m-long ‘spit’ of golden pebbles which changes direction with the wind. We stop to relax and swim here before heading to Hvar, an island much loved by Europe’s fashionable jet-set, but also one which has a quiet side away from the summer resorts, in its fields of lavender and hilltop fortresses. We berth in Stari Grad, one of Croatia’s oldest towns, with a history dating back to the ancient Greeks, where you are free to choose from one of the excellent cafés and restaurants that line its harbour.

• ‘Half board plus’ cruise – 7 x breakfasts, 6 x lunches, 2 x dinners

Day Six | Hvar - Mljet Sailing around the island of Hvar this morning, we arrive in Hvar Town, a delightful ‘Dubrovnik in miniature’, with Gothic buildings, marble streets and fortified walls. Here we see the oldest public theatre in Europe, dating to 1612, which has recently reopened its doors, and spend some pleasant time exploring the town’s historic heart. After lunch, we continue to Mljet, the greenest of the Dalmatian Islands, for a visit to tranquil, beautiful Mljet National Park, home to five types of forest, myriad bird species and two deep lakes. Mljet also has a rich cultural heritage, with bright folk costumes and charming traditional handicrafts – the evening is at leisure to dine independently and soak up some of the local colour.

• Dinners other than stated in the itinerary

Day Seven | Dubrovnik M/S Princess Aloha returns to Dubrovnik this morning, and after lunch we take a tour of the city, jewel-like with its characteristic ruby red roofs encircled by white-gold walls. This UNESCO World Heritage Site needs little introduction – its fame is well-earned, but in the height of summer it can be overwhelmed with tourists. So much nicer then to visit in spring, and to remain here in the evening after the day trippers have departed. We visit the elegant 15th century Rector’s Palace, home to the rulers of Ragusa, as Dubrovnik was then known, along with the Franciscan Monastery and one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe (which is still dispensing). In terms of quality restaurants, Dubrovnik has an embarrassment of riches, and you are sure to find a memorable dining venue here. Day Eight | Dubrovnik - London We disembark M/S Princess Aloha after breakfast and transfer from the port of Dubrovnik to the international airport for our flight home.

Brač

Sailing one way between Dubrovnik and Split allows for a more leisurely discovery of the many historical, cultural and scenic highlights of the region known in ancient times as Dalmatia. This lovely cruise aboard the superb M/S Equator, one of the flagships of its fleet, takes in these spectacular, iconic cities – the medieval dukedom of Ragusa and the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s retirement retreat respectively – and packs in between visits to no fewer than seven islands, each with its own character and attractions, from the beautiful bays and beaches of Brač and Elaphiti to the perfectly-preserved Gothic towns of Hvar and Korčula. There is simply no better exploration of the wonders of Dalmatia.

Hvar Vis Biševo

Korčula Slano Mljet Elaphiti Islands Dubrovnik

Day One | London – Dubrovnik We fly to Dubrovnik and transfer to the port to embark M/S Equator. Before our welcome dinner, our Guide Lecturer will give an overview of the Dalmatian Coast’s history as well as the tour itinerary for the days ahead.

Included in your holiday price

Day Two | Dubrovnik - Elaphiti Islands - Slano An undoubted icon of world travel, Dubrovnik is unmissable. This morning we appreciate why George Bernard Shaw described this enchanting walled medieval city as “paradise on earth”. On a walking tour of Dubrovnik’s gleaming stone streets, we make stops at the elegant 15th century Rector’s Palace, home to the rulers of old Ragusa, along with the Franciscan Monastery and its ancient pharmacy. Enjoy magical views as M/S Equator sails around Dubrovnik’s city’s walls en route to one of the tranquil Elaphiti Islands for a swim stop. Back on the mainland, and the Peljesac peninsula noted for high quality wine production, Slano is our gateway to Ston, a once fortified village now best known for its succulent oysters, which we get to sample this evening.

• All shore excursions as detailed in the itinerary

Day Three | Mljet Our voyage continues to Mljet, the greenest of the Dalmatian Islands. Here we spend time in the picturesque, verdant Mljet National Park and take a boat ride to St. Mary Isle to visit an ancient Benedictine monastery, an old abbey and 12th century church. We berth in the port of Pomena this evening, a tiny village with just 50 permanent inhabitants, but which still offers a choice of restaurants for dinner.

• Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks

Day Four | Korčula Stopping for lunch at a secluded bay on the way, we sail today to Korčula, reputedly the birthplace of Marco Polo. The enchanting island is home to one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, and we explore its Gothic palaces, stone streets and fairytale towers. Gourmet delights await this evening at whichever restaurant you choose, with fresh fish and seafood a particular pleasure, accompanied by the excellent local wine. Day Five | Vis M/S Equator sails on to Vis, formerly a Yugoslav naval base. As a result of decades of restricted access, Vis has a special charm – ‘the Mediterranean as it once was’. We have the chance to explore the attractions of Vis, including a Roman thermal palace and a small archaeological museum displaying a 4th century BCE bronze of Artemis, along with time at leisure, during which you may sample some of the island’s renowned wine. Back onboard, a sumptuous Captain’s Dinner is served this evening.

• International flights and transfers • ‘Half board plus’ cruise – 7 x breakfasts, 6 x lunches, 2 x dinners • The services of an Andante Travels Guide Lecturer throughout the cruise • The services of a local Cruise Director throughout the cruise • Tea, coffee and bottled water • Wi-Fi onboard • Port tax

Not included in your holiday price • Dinners other than stated in the itinerary • Tips/gratuities

Day Six | Biševo - Hvar - Stari Grad (Hvar) Following a stop at tiny Biševo to visit the luminescent natural phenomenon known as the Blue Cave (weather permitting), M/S Equator sails on to Hvar, the sunniest of the Dalmatian Islands. Hvar Town, another walled gem of Gothic buildings and marble streets, is a particular highlight, and we visit the oldest public theatre in Europe and the Renaissance cathedral. We berth further along the island in Stari Grad, which justifies its translation (‘old town’) with a history that stretches back 2,500 years. Choose one of the excellent cafés and restaurants that line the harbour here for dinner. Day Seven | Bol (Brač) - Split After a stop at the Golden Horn, a breathtaking, constantly shape-shifting beach on the island of Brač, M/S Equator sails on to Split. Before our arrival, our Guide Lecturer will give a talk on Diocletian and the later Roman of the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. Here, in the land of his birth, the Roman Emperor Diocletian retired, having built the most extraordinary palace complex, which now comprises much of the old town. There are Roman-era remnants to admire – not least the Temple of Jupiter (now cathedral baptistery) and the Peristyle, the city’s elegant central square – along with Gothic and Renaissance buildings, which add further lustre to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. With amazing restaurants to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice at dinner. Day Eight | Split - London We disembark M/S Equator after breakfast and transfer from the port of Split to the airport for our flight home.
