If you’re looking for a summer holiday with a difference, we hope that the following pages might inspire your next adventure. For those who want to stay closer to home, we have a broad array of fascinating UK-based itineraries on offer, which range from a walking tour of Hadrian’s Wall to a behind-the-scenes look at Roman sites dotted around the county of Kent. Ready to board a plane and make up for all that lost travel time? Well, we have tours available that can take you from cave art sites in Spain and France to the historic city of Berlin and even to a precariously perched monastery in Turkey’s north east. If you’re hoping to see the ancient world from a new perspective this summer, why not choose between a stunning Greek cruise that visits sites such as Delos and the Acropolis of Lindos in Rhodes and a Nile cruise that explores sites both iconic and lesserknown. 2022 is also your next chance to experience the once-a-decade Oberammergau Passion Play in Bavaria and we have four tours on offer that can put you in the audience, which range from a three-day whirlwind short break to a Mozart-themed tour. We do hope the following pages help you to decide where to visit next and all that’s left to say is that we hope to see you soon for a summer holiday unlike any other.

Since the beginning of 2022, we have taken a total of 464 guests on holiday across 36 tours, including 11 Study Days. These are just a few of the testimonials that came back from our most recent tours and, as always, we have loved reading them.

Romans on the Bay of Naples

Egypt off the Beaten Track

Recently reviewed by Popular Archaeology magazine, this tour is popular with our guests and this testimonial from a traveller who enjoyed our 14th March 2022 departure makes it sound like a memorable experience.

Egypt is always a popular destination with Andante travellers and a guest who explored sites off the beaten track with us on our 20th February 2022 departure was left in awe at how many amazing sites were featured.

“Flawless”

“Sites were magic”

“Flawless. The combination of an incredibly efficient, helpful, organised and friendly tour leader, a knowledgeable but approachable expert who explained things clearly and a fantastic driver made for a relaxing, stress-free holiday.”

“The trip was brilliant, made better by wonderful companions. Accommodation was delightful, Egyptian food delicious and sites were magic. As a veteran traveller to Egypt (13 times), I was astonished at the number of sites unknown to me.”

Athens

Exploring islands of the Cyclades & Dodecanese on a cruise

Mykonos

9 DAYS

From £3,955pp

Delos

Departing July

Paros

This tour, starting in Athens, the cradle of Western civilisation, takes us to some of Greece’s most iconic islands, following in the footsteps of countless mythological and historical figures. Our ship for this tour is the wonderful MV La Belle de L’Adriatique and it will take us to some spectacular places, where fascinating archaeological explorations await.

Santorini

Kos

Rhodes

Following a perfectly located hotel stay in Athens on the first night, we spend the next day discovering its myriad delights, starting with the Athenian Acropolis and its accompanying museum. This evening we board our ship and begin our cruise. The Cyclades, circling Delos, lend their name to the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age civilisation famous for its surprisingly modern-looking white, smooth-featured sculptures. Delos itself is a remarkable site, where Leto gave birth to Apollo and Artemis. It housed the Treasury, which Athens took advantage of to fund the building programme on the Acropolis in the 5th century. In later times, the island was the centre of the Mediterranean slave trade. During our time on the UNESCOlisted island of Delos, we see the Terrace of the Lions, the Sanctuary of Apollo and the Houses of Dionysus and Cleopatra. Our ship also takes us to Kos, where we are reminded that it was the birthplace of Hippocrates as we explore the Sanctuary of Asclepius. Close by, while on Rhodes, we come into contact with the early Middle Ages as we consider the role of the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in protecting pilgrims to the Holy Land. We also make a stop at the Acropolis of Lindos, whose dominant position affords stunning views as well as strategic importance, putting into perspective why it was taken over by each power that occupied Rhodes. Millenia earlier, our visit to Santorini allows us to explore some of the finest Minoan remains outside Crete, including the ruins at Akrotiri - the ‘Pompeii of the Aegean’ - and the fantastic Museum of Prehistoric Thera. This cruise offers a combination of improbably beautiful islands and a staggering breadth of history, which inevitably went on to shape the world that we know today.

MV La Belle de L’Adriatique This premium rated ship has five decks and is comparable to a 4* hotel. The restaurant is on the Main Deck, the Lounge Bar with dancefloor on the Embarkation Deck, and a smaller piano bar with terrace on the Upper Deck. The Sun Deck has a bar, two jacuzzis and sunloungers.

NORTH EAST TURKEY

Istanbul

Explore a region far beyond the reach of most tourists 11 DAYS

From £4,255pp

Trabzon

Ani Kars

Erzurum Dogubayazıt Tatvan Van Por

Nemrut Dag

Departing June

The dramatic landscapes between the Black Sea and Lake Van include the snow-capped volcanic peak of Mount Ararat. We spend 11 memorable days discovering little-visited parts of Turkey in expert company, from the precariously perched Sumela Monastery to the remote Kingdom of Urartu and more. Our tour ends at the mountain-ringed Lake Van - a fitting end to an exceptional journey, having explored a region far beyond the reach of most tourists.

Activity Level

Our tour starts in Trabzon, located on the historic Silk Road. Here, we view the outside of the 13th century Church of Hagia Sophia, with its unusual late Byzantine relief carvings, and the impressive citadel built on a spur of land sloping down towards the Black Sea. We then travel up into the lower reaches of the Pontic Alps to visit as much as is possible of the Sumela Monastery. Spectacularly built into a sheer cliff, it dates from the 6th century and it boasts some fine frescoes. The monastery was hastily abandoned in 1923 following the population exchange between Greece and the newly founded Republic of Turkey. We then drive over the dramatic Zigana Pass and follow the old Silk Road to Erzurum, the highest city in the country. Highlights here include the Cifte Minare Medrese, the glazed-tile adorned Yakutiye Medrese, a number of elegant tombs with conical roofs, and the Ulu Cami. Next, we travel to the medieval ghost town of Ani, a once powerful, church-filled settlement astride a branch of the Silk Route, and we also explore Kars where we visit the impressive crag-top citadel. From here we drive to Dogubayazit, where our main focus is the romantic 17th century Ishak Pasha Palace dramatically situated on a limestone ridge overlooking the Ararat Plain below. Driving over the Tendurek Pass, we arrive at northern shore of Lake Van where we visit the medieval city of Ahlat. On the southwest shore of Lake Van we discover the dormant volcano of Nemrut Dag, the former caravan town of Bitlis, the Kurdish village of Por and the spectacular island of Akdamar. We also explore the impressive archaeological museum in Van, the mighty Rock of Van with its fortifications and vertiginous burial chambers, and the Urartian fortress of Ayanis. Our tour concludes with a visit to the fairytale fortress of Hosap, which was built by a Kurdish chieftan in the 17th century, and the fortified palace of Çavustepe, which was built on a mountain spur that snakes out into a wide valley.

Tour Highlights • Learn more about the history of these littlevisited parts of Turkey in the company of an expert • Explore the remote kingdom of Urartu and the ruined medieval Armenian city of Ani • Discover the Greek Orthodox Sumela Monastery, built into the side of a sheer cliff • Admire stunning scenery in this picturesque and surprising part of Turkey Images: Ishak Pasha Palace | Akdamar island | Sumela Monastery

From here, it’s on to Dendera, which is home to a temple complex whose main feature is the well-preserved Temple of Hathor – goddess of love, music and wine. The ceiling boasts an incredible plaster cast of the Zodiac of Dendera. Dinner is held back on board our ship and later we travel onwards to Nag Hammadi.

Sailing to Beni Suef, we begin at the Pyramid of Meidum. Next, we continue to the Pyramid of Amenemhat III, which is 48 metres tall and is coated in limestone.

Day Eleven | Assuit - Tel el-Amarna Today we sail to Tel el-Amarna, thought to be the most significant city site that survives from ancient Egypt. We visit the tombs of important figures such as Ahmose I, Pentu and Meryre, and we visit the Royal Tomb of Akhenaten, the foundations of the Great Palace of King Akhenaten and also the Small and Great Temples of Aten.

Day Twelve | Tel el-Amarna - Minya Visit the west bank of the Nile today, touring Tuna el-Gebel and the ruins of a major Egyptian city, El-Ashmunein. We also visit a section of the 39 stone-cut tombs of Beni Hasan on the Nile’s east bank.
