At the Reading Museum

The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most recognisable and famous artefacts of British history. But although seemingly telling a simple story, it contains many puzzles and enigmas. Can we tell who created the tapestry? Is it simply a piece of Norman propaganda, or is there a clever hidden pro Anglo-Saxon message woven into it? There are a number of named individuals on the tapestry- who are they and why are they there?

A Study Day to mark Ripon Cathedral’s 1350th anniversary Enjoy a delightful day roaming the powerhouses of medieval North Yorkshire, set amongst the beauty of the rolling landscape. We commence at Ripon Cathedral where we are engulfed in 1350 years of history. Taking a guided tour, we hear all about the former Benedictine monastery built by St. Wilfrid in the mid-7th century, heavily inspired by his trips to Rome, and about the crypt laden with relics which still survives as one of the oldest structures in any cathedral in the country. ROMAN LONDON - WHAT LIES BENEATH

Special access to a variety of Roman remains and a chance to see London in a new light Destroyed during the rebellion by Boudica during the 1st century AD, Roman Londinium was quickly rebuilt to become a flourishing town. In its heyday, the city was equipped with a fort, amphitheatre, large public baths, and temples and substantial commercial facilities as befitted the capital of Roman Britain. Much has been discovered by excavations over the last 50 years, and the story so far is beautifully told in the Museum of London, which is adjacent to and just outside the Roman Wall. Learn about the importance of inscriptions in the Classical world Among the most important tools of the archaeologist working in the classical world is the huge wealth of inscriptions that are one of the keys to unlocking the past. The Romans in particular were fond of the public display of their decrees and virtues on tombstones, building inscriptions, milestones and as idle doodles and graffiti.

From Seti I’s tomb to Bristol Museum and Art Gallery This Study Day will begin with Egyptologist Lucia Gahlin giving a lecture on the colourful circus strongman Giovanni Battista Belzoni’s discovery of the most splendid tomb in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, the tomb of Pharaoh Seti I. Lucia will explain why a comprehensive study of this tomb in watercolours by Belzoni and Alessandrow Ricci resides today in the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. The farm was established as a research site in 1972 by the Council for British Archaeology, to investigate life in Iron Age Britain through experimental archaeology.

Experimental archaeology is a relatively new approach to archaeology that allows archaeologists to test theories and discover previously missing knowledge from the archaeological record.
