Whether that’s the temples of Southern India or the jungles of Central America, the Moorish palaces of Spain or the museums of our very own Eastern Seaboard. The choice is yours. And when we say "the choice is yours", we really mean it. When it comes to creating our new tour programs, we like to call on you, our loyal guests, to help us — as usual, you didn’t disappoint with your 2018 choices. Joining a superb selection of tours chosen by our team, we now have Georgia & Armenia, The Trans-Siberian Express, and The Silk Road. You’ll find Georgia & Armenia on p.27, and the latter two in their own accompanying flyers — you know you’ve chosen some truly epic tours when they don’t fit in the main catalog! continent-spanning rail journeys through some of the most impressive landscapes on Earth, these are archaeological tours on a scale never-before-seen. But that’s not to say, of course, that there’s anything wrong with a traditional tour. In fact, no matter the format, an Archaeological Tours experience is anything but standard-issue. Watch the world slip by from the top deck as you drift lazily down the Nile; get caught up in a flurry of sights, sounds, smells, and tastes in the night markets of Japan, and experience the spirit of the dance at a Kathakali performance in India. As ever, I hope our sneak preview of 2018 gets you thinking about your upcoming adventures, and inspires you to join us on tour, whether it be this year or next. About Us
What can you expect when you travel with Archaeological Tours? Superb Itineraries
If it’s on our itinerary, it has been personally researched and visited by at least one of our team. This way, we can ensure that when you travel to distant lands, you will be rewarded with deep insight into the archaeology, history and culture of your destination. This is just as true whether you are touring the mighty pyramids of the Egyptian desert, or walking through the prehistoric landscapes around Stonehenge.

Ranging from 12 to 21 days, our tours allow you time to totally immerse yourself in the places we visit. For many of us, a trip to Ancient Egypt, Southern India or Central America is a once in a lifetime experience. We plan not only archaeological but art, music and cultural visits into our programs. You can’t go all the way to Malta and miss seeing the Caravaggio hidden away in one of the Churches of Valletta. Equally, you don’t want to miss the chance to view one of the finest art collections in the world at Russia’s wonderful Hermitage Museum.

Noted Scholars
Travel with distinguished faculty members of respected universities. Our guides are chosen not only for the breadth and depth of their knowledge, but also for their ability to fascinate their listeners, and share the passion they have for their chosen subject. A great number of our scholars have toured with us for many years and are very much attuned to the subtleties of what makes a stand-out tour.
Camaraderie of Fellow Travelers
Most of our tours have around 18 participants, and we think this number of travelers is ‘just right’. Small groups which offer sociability, companionship and a sense of shared experience but most importantly don’t crowd you, or make you feel like part of the herd.
A Sense of Adventure
Travel broadens the mind. It stimulates, educates and inspires. At Archaeological Tours we never limit our ambition and seek out first-rate archaeology and history wherever it can be found. In 2018 you will
find tours to Central Asia, Russia, Japan, and India as well as Latin America and Classical Europe. Even in the modern age of globalization, there are still a wondrous variety of cultures, landscapes and histories waiting to be discovered beyond our own shores.

We pay a visit to Mérida’s Archaeological Museum this morning before making our way to the Huerta Montero Tholos, a Bronze Age or Chalcolithic burial site remarkable for its exact alignment with the sun on the winter solstice. This afternoon we make our way to Seville, where we have some free time before dinner.

LED BY Dr Veronica Kalas is an art and architectural historian. She is also an archaeologist specializing in the east Mediterranean.
Join us aboard a luxury gulet for an island-hopping cruise on the waters of the Aegean. As we sail leisurely across the sparkling sea, we pause to explore the spectacular ancient treasures found on the islands of the Dodecanese and the Cyclades. Voyage to ancient ruins, experience Greek culture, and swim in the azure waters on the journey of a lifetime.
What to expect
The Dodecanese Archipelago The footprints of so many civilizations – from the Greeks to the Romans, mighty medieval knights to Byzantine and Ottoman rulers – share a space across the Dodecanese sands. Rhodes is the first island we explore here – the magnificent Acropolis of Lindos is a particular highlight. Sailing on to Symi, we find ourselves surrounded by colorful neoclassical houses. From there we move on to the volcanic island of Nisyros; and the impressive fortifications contained within Paleokastro. Alongside the archaeological treasures found on Astipalea, we also find a wealth of welcoming villages and sandy beaches.
The Cyclades Who could resist the Cyclades? This is the Greece that resides within our imaginations. Gleaming white villages wind around sun-soaked outcrops of rock, anchored on picturesque beaches and sparkling sapphire seas. There isn’t enough space to list all the archaeological wonders that we see in the Cyclades. However, highlights come thick and fast, from the sprawling ruins of ancient Thera to Delos, the mythical birthplace of the god Apollo. We also spend two days on Santorini, home to many marvelous Minoan artifacts, and as if that wasn’t enough, there's also Akrotiri, the beautifully preserved 'Pompeii of the Aegean'.
Gulet Cruising Take a break from the everyday and enjoy the luxury of gulet travel. Gulet tours are unlike any other cruise experiences. The vessels are designed to offer total relaxation, making them the perfect partner to our tours. Enjoy beautiful food and plenty of swimming opportunities alongside fascinating archaeological excursions. Enjoy single sittings during on-board dinners, ample space for sunbathing on deck, and plenty of shaded areas to relax in too. The Halis Temel has recently undergone refurbishment. Guests will stay in her freshly decorated cabins with wooden floors, new bathrooms and new furniture.

GEORGIA & ARMENIA
At the meeting point of Europe and Asia, suspended between the Black and Caspian Seas, we find the Caucasus. This mountainous region is home to Georgia and Armenia: culturally rich, Classically famed, and home to a wealth of history.
What to expect When it comes to sights, few countries can compete with Georgia and Armenia for sheer drama. But the lone monasteries presiding over rolling hills and towns carved directly from rock-faces are just the beginning. Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital, is a place where eye-catching contemporary architecture meets winding Old Quarter lanes, while in Armenia’s south, the Graeco-Roman Temple of Garni stands firm as an enduring symbol of a pre-Christian past. For all the archaeological interest these two nations hold, stories of more recent times, both troubled and tranquil, are also writ large on the landscape: from the Museum of Fine Arts to the Stalin Museum, we see it all.
TOUR HIGHLIGHTS
• Discover Tbilisi, the ‘city of light’ and Georgia’s capital • Explore the ancient rock-hewn town of Uplistsikhe • View the classical Hellenistic Temple of Garni in Armenia LED BY Ian Colvin is a historian specializing in the Late Roman and Byzantine history of the Caucasus regions, and is currently excavating at the site of Nokalakevi.
