Wrestlers shine at District 3 tournament

Eatonville qualifies 10 for state

The Eatonville High School boys and girls wrestling teams put on a strong showing at the District 3 tournament this past Saturday at Foss High School, with 10 wrestlers punching their tickets to the Mat Classic XXXVI state championships at the Tacoma Dome on February 21-22.

“The team wrestled awesome, and all the girls wrestled fantastic! Lowest place was 4th for the young but talented women! I am so proud of everyone and the fan support was amazing!” said head coach Mario Ragazzo, praising his athletes for their hard work and determination.

The boys team finished third overall, with seven wrestlers qualifying for state and another still in contention. Jameson Beckord (215 lbs.) led the way, capturing a district title. Beckord’s journey to the top was anything but easy, battling through a season-long shoulder injury that forced him to medically forfeit multiple tournaments and miss valuable practice time.

“While battling a shoulder injury all year I was unable to compete as

I had hoped most of the year. I had to medical forfeit a few tournaments due to my injury,” Beckord shared. “With many doctors’ visits for PT, massage, and hyperbaric sessions, I missed many practices.

When I found out I was the #5 seed going into leagues, I knew I had to go prove them wrong! I went out and wrestled like I know I can and put the injury in the rearview mirror.”

After a second-place finish at sub-regionals last season as a freshman, Beckord was determined to make it to the Tacoma Dome this year. Despite not wrestling in any league duals, he

put in the extra effort by studying film and watching his weight-class opponents compete to develop a strategy.

Lady Cruisers clinch 2A SPSL league title

The Eatonville Lady Cruisers secured their first 2A SPSL League championship since 2010 with a hardfought 51-43 victory over the second-place Fife Trojans on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at McCrossin Court. Eatonville then capped off its regular season with a dominant 71-38 win over Clover Park on Friday, Feb. 7, finishing with a perfect 14-0 league record.

The league title was a culmination of months of hard work, and head coach Deanna Andersen praised her team’s dedication.

“We all wrote goals at the beginning of the season and winning league was one of those,” Andersen said. “To

see the girls work so hard and achieve that first goal fills me with pride.”

Coming off a 55-39 win in their first meeting, Eatonville knew Fife would be ready for the rematch. The Cruisers opened strong, despite nine first-quarter turnovers, using a 14-6 rebounding advantage to take a 10-2 lead. Hailey Hall led the early charge with six points.

The Trojans stormed back in the second quarter, opening with a 7-3 run and tying the game at 17 with 24 seconds remaining. Hall split a pair of free throws to regain the lead for Eatonville, and a Fife buzzer-beater was waived off due to a travel, keeping the Cruisers ahead

18-17 at halftime. Hall and Andersen led Eatonville at the break with seven points apiece.

Fife came out aggressively in the third quarter, scoring four straight points to take the lead at the 6:27 mark after a Cruiser turnover. However, Eatonville responded immediately with back-toback baskets to reclaim the lead. The teams exchanged baskets throughout the period before Eatonville entered the bonus and capitalized at the free-throw line, closing the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 32-27 lead. The Lady Cruisers turned up the pressure in the fourth, opening with a

‘Cautious optimism’ for county economy

The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber hosted its annual Horizons Economic Forecast on Jan. 29 at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center. Presenting its 2025 Pierce County Index Report, the Chamber invited guests to speak about the county’s economic health, outlook and future prospects for this year.

Authored by economist Dr. Neal Johnson, the report highlights a blend of growth and challenges, focusing on trends in gross domestic product, labor markets, housing, and retail sales while forecasting moderate growth and ongoing challenges for key sectors in 2025.

“This PCEI Report provides our members with the insights they need to navigate the upcoming year with resilience, while recognizing the obstacles still facing Pierce County. Although we are seeing improvements in personal income and job creation, challenges in housing affordability and retail spending reveal the lingering effects of high interest rates and inflation,” said TacomaPierce County Chamber President and CEO Andrea Reay.

“We maintain a cautiously optimistic outlook for Pierce County. From job creation to housing affordability, this report helps our community make informed decisions to strengthen our economy and promote equity. Our commitment is to ensure that businesses – both large and small – have the tools they need to succeed.”

Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello addressed the audience to pledge the county’s continued alliance with businesses large and small.

“You’ve seen Pierce County lead with our Pierce County Business Accelerator Program. It has helped to start up over 400 new businesses and entrepreneurs right here in this community, helping to bring their dreams to reality, employ people and build wealth,” he said.

“You’ve seen us launch the Businesses Navigator Program, leaning in to support Black, Brown and Indigenous People of Color owned businesses, and businesses owned by women and veterans, to help these marginalized communities that have not had historical access to wealth and the skills the build wealth. I’m here to tell you that no matter what happens in the other Washington, you won’t see Pierce County shy away from equitable economic development and lift all communities up.”

Just as the county must support business, Mello said it must also support the people who work at these businesses for them to live in Pierce County, succeed and keep county businesses thriving.

“We’ll continue to build more housing at all income levels, especially affordable housing,” Mello said. “We will work tirelessly to expand childcare access and improve community safety because all these issues are business issues. We need all of those sectors to succeed in order to make this place a great place to do business.”

Port of Tacoma Commission Vice President Dick Marzano spoke about two Port projects aimed to improve Pierce County’s economic vitality. He noted that the Port provides 42,000 family wage jobs and with that, $2.8 to $3 billion in labor income. The Port brings in more than $100 million for K-12 education, transportation investments, and social services across the county.

Last month, the Port, City of Tacoma, City of Fife, Pierce County and the Puyallup Tribe agreed on a draft subarea plan for the tideflats.

“The plan was over seven years in the making, and it creates a shared vision among the five governments that balances industrial growth, environmental protection, and longterm stability to our region,” Marzano said. “The plan now heads to the Tacoma Planning Commission then

to the city council for approval.”

He said another example of economic vitality involving the Port is its effort to redevelop the east side of the Foss Waterway. In 2023, working together with its community partners – Tacoma School District, the Puyallup Tribe and City of Tacoma – the Port commission entered into an agreement to develop a Port Maritime Center. Its groundbreaking ceremony held on Jan. 8, the center will be home to new Port administration buildings as well as Maritime 253 regional skills center.

“The Maritime Skills Center will serve students throughout Pierce County. It will give students the ability to go anyplace in the world for a job,” Marzano said. “By working together, we can look forward to making our region a place everybody can be proud of.”

KEY FINDINGS

The 2025 Pierce County Index Report gives a forecast of the county’s economic conditions, labor market, income, and housing activity. Johnson, its author, said the 2025 PCEI looks a bit weaker than in 2024 as he spoke of the COVID pandemic’s cost to the Pierce County economy and how the county is slowly rebounding.

“Economic growth in Pierce County will depend on population growth which may be hindered by low housing affordability, which is hindered by higher mortgage rates, and that policy is not likely to move in a direction that would improve this state of affairs,” he said about the county’s overall economic forecast.

Concerning economic growth, the PCEI is projected to rise by 1.6 percent in 2025, driven by increasing personal income and enhanced gross domestic product (GDP) contributions from key sectors like government and real estate. According to the report, this growth reflects the resilience of Pierce County’s economy. Total real personal

A delicious French dessert

French cuisine is known for many things, including dessert. Those who want to emulate their favorite French chefs for a loved one this Valentine's Day should consider the following recipe for “Clafoutis,” a French baked custard, from Elisabeth M. Prueitt and Chad Robertson’'s “Tartine” (Chronicle Books).

Clafoutis

■ Makes one 10-inch custard

■ 2 cups whole milk

■ ¾ cup sugar

■ ½ vanilla bean

■ Pinch of salt

■ 3 large whole eggs

■ 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

■ 2 cups cherries, pitted

■ ¼ cup sugar for topping

Preheat the oven to 425 F. Butter a 10-inch ceramic quiche mold or pie dish.

In a small saucepan, combine the milk, sugar, vanilla bean, and salt. Place over medium heat and heat, stirring

income is expected to increase by 1.8 percent, with per capita income reaching $69,680. This indicates an ongoing recovery following recent economic disruptions that is now capable of providing a solid foundation for local businesses to create new opportunities.

Regarding employment trends, Pierce County anticipates the addition of 2,750 new jobs in 2025, primarily in the education, health services, and trade sectors. However, challenges persist for construction employment as high mortgage rates continue to impact residential development. The report advises that with a labor force growth of 0.8 percent, now is the time for employers to align their workforce strategies to harness emerging talent.

“The labor force participation rate took a hit during the pandemic. Post-pandemic labor growth has been decidedly lower than pre-pandemic labor growth. Pierce County’s population growth since 2021 has been one-quarter to one-half of the pre-pandemic rate,” Johnson said.

“When you put this all together, the unemployment rate for 2025 looks about the same and maybe a slight bit higher than 2024. Pierce County runs high relative to the U.S., the state and King County, being higher than King County, which is understandable, but one would hope that we’re closer to the same or national rates.”

Johnson noted that non-farm employment gains in 2024 were average with 5,500 jobs.

“While construction only gained 108 jobs, that was far better than expected. I chalk that up to nonresidential construction particularly in industrial and warehouse spaces. Education and healthcare, particularly healthcare, led the way.”

The report’s analysis of the county’s housing market revealed some not too surprising facts. Although mortgage rates eased slightly in 2024, housing affordability remains

to dissolve the sugar, to just under a boil. While the milk mixture is heating, break 1 egg into a heatproof mixing bowl, add the flour and whisk until the mixture is free of any lumps. Add the remaining 2 eggs and whisk until smooth. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Slowly ladle the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture while whisking constantly. Pour the mixture into the prepared mold and add the fruit, making sure that the fruit is evenly distributed. Bake until just set in the center and slightly puffed and browned around the outside, 30 to 35 minutes. Remove the custard from the oven and turn up the oven temperature to 500 F. Evenly sprinkle the sugar over the top of the clafoutis. Return the custard to the oven for 5 to 10 minutes to caramelize the sugar. Watch carefully, as it will darken quickly. Let the custard cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature. Far Breton Variation: Omit the cherries. Soak 2 cups pitted prunes in equal parts water and brandy for about 1 hour; the timing will depend on how dry the prunes are. Drain off any remaining liquid before adding the prunes to the custard. Note: You may use any fruit that is well balanced with acidity and sweetness, such as raspberries, apricots, or peaches. Sauteed apples or pears are delicious variations in fall.

below historical averages. The Housing Affordability Index is expected to rise modestly, reaching 93.1 by the end of 2025, which is still below the benchmark of 100. This limits housing accessibility for many families. Even though new housing listings increased by 12.4 percent in 2024, closed sales only grew by 2.7 percent, indicating ongoing hesitancy or challenges among buyers. The report notes that addressing housing affordability is critical for maintaining and enhancing Pierce County’s competitive edge in attracting and retaining talent.

“Residential building permits are a weak indicator for both construction material sales and construction employment. High interest rates, supply chain issues, and higher prices for construction materials pushed building permits down but there was an uptick in the fourth quarter of 2024,” Johnson said. “On the inflation side, material prices are still relatively high.”

With housing affordability being low and mortgage rates not likely to come down significantly, Johnson doesn’t see an improvement unless prices come down, which is not likely, he said.

“Household income jumping substantially is also not likely. With high mortgage rates and low affordability, it should come as no surprise that housing activity is soft, and I don’t see an improvement here.”

In real estate and construction, commercial real estate has seen modest activity, with a 3.6 percent growth in industrial warehouse inventory, while residential construction continues to face constraints due to high borrowing costs. These trends underscore the need for targeted policies to improve housing affordability and capitalize on opportunities in growing industrial sectors.

Pierce County anticipates the addition of 2,750 new jobs in 2025, primarily in the education, health services, and trade sectors.

run to extend their advantage to 42-29. Bailey Andersen fouled out with 2:23 left, and Fife took advantage, using free throws to go on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 47-38. Lillian Bickford also fouled out during that stretch, but Eatonville managed to hold off the late surge, sealing a 51-43 victory and the league title. Andersen led Eatonville with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Tia Schanbeck recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Hall was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds, and Bickford added six points and 13 boards. As a team, Eatonville dominated the glass, outrebounding Fife 48-29.

“Fife was not an easy game,” Andersen said. “They were ready for us, and many things were not going our way, but every girl pulled her weight either in the game or from the bench, and we walked away with the title.” Three days later, Eatonville traveled to Mel Ninnis Memorial Gym to take on Clover Park in their regularseason finale. The Cruisers wasted no time, scoring immediately off the opening tip. Hall grabbed the jump ball, passed to Andersen, who found Bickford under the hoop for an easy score. Clover Park’s first possession ended in a quick turnover, setting the tone for the game. Despite a sloppy first quarter with 11 turnovers apiece, Eatonville controlled the boards, outrebounding the Timberwolves 13-1 and building a commanding 24-6 lead. Bailey Andersen led the way with nine points, while Hall contributed six points and six rebounds.

Clover Park momentarily gained momentum with a steal and quick basket to start the second quarter, but Eatonville quickly responded. Andersen delivered a bullet pass inside to Hall, who finished with a layup. The teams traded baskets until the Cruisers closed the half on a 10-2 run to take a 43-16 lead. Hall notched a double-double by halftime, leading all scorers with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Eatonville continued to dominate in the second half, opening the third quarter with a 9-0 run while forcing nine Clover Park turnovers. The defensive effort helped extend their lead to 61-24 entering the final period. Morgan Laird led the Cruisers with six points in the third.

Clover Park capitalized on three straight Eatonville turnovers to start the fourth, scoring three quick points. However, the Cruisers settled in and responded with a 5-0 run, sparked by a long Schanbeck pass to Bickford for a layup. The Timberwolves outscored Eatonville in the quarter, thanks to a 12-8 rebounding edge, but the deficit was too large to overcome, and the Cruisers closed out a 71-38 victory.

Hall led Eatonville with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Andersen added 16 points, eight assists, five steals, and four rebounds. Jordyn Green contributed nine points and four steals, while Bickford, Alayna Meyer, Miley King, and Laird each added six points. Schanbeck finished with five steals, five assists, and two blocks despite scoring only three points.

With a perfect 14-0 league record, Eatonville now shifts its focus to the District 3 playoffs. The tournament will feature the top five teams from the SPSL and Olympic leagues, along with two at-large selections. The district seeding committee will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 12, to determine the 12-team bracket.

Eatonville is expected to receive a top-two seed, competing with Bainbridge (the Olympic League champion) for the No. 1 spot. The top four seeds will earn first-round byes and host second-round games. If the Lady Cruisers secure a top-four seed, they will host their first playoff game on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Rainier Connect Arena at Eatonville High School. Game time and opponent are yet to be announced. BASKETBALL

Eatonville Cruisers close out season with hard-fought battles

The Eatonville Cruisers boys’ basketball team wrapped up their season with two competitive matchups, showing resilience and determination despite tough results. Facing the Fife Trojans and the Clover Park Timberwolves, the Cruisers battled hard but ultimately fell short in both contests. However, their performances highlighted their progress, grit, and the impact of their senior leaders.

Traveling to Fife High School on Tuesday February 4th, the Cruisers aimed to avenge their previous 65-42 loss to the Trojans in January. This time around, Eatonville displayed significant improvement, keeping the game close before falling 57-47.

Eatonville started strong, striking first when Nate Goode secured a rebound and found Michael Stogsdill streaking up the court for an easy layup and a 2-0 lead. However, Fife quickly responded with an 8-0 run and led 12-8 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter proved to be a challenge for the Cruisers. The Trojan defense turned up the pressure, forcing seven turnovers and limiting Eatonville to just four points. Fife capitalized with a pair of scoring runs, taking a 24-12 lead into halftime.

Eatonville’s offense found its rhythm in the third quarter. After a 5-0 Fife run to start the period, the Cruisers fought back with a 14-5 surge of their own, outscoring the Trojans 16-15 in the frame. One bright spot for the Cruisers was Amari Samuel, who contributed seven points off the bench.

Samuel stayed hot in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 of his team-high 18 points, but the Trojans managed to hold on for a 57-47 victory.

“I loved how our group battled in this one,” said Head Coach Josh Bennett. “To hold a team to 24 points in a half is impressive. I have said all year our half-court set defense is really good, and that was on display for most of the game. Offensively, to score 35 points in the second half and almost come back and get the win shows the grit and fight that this team has.”

Samuel led the way with 18 points, all in the second half, while Stogsdill added a season-high 12 points along with three blocks.

The Cruisers returned home Friday February 7th to Rainier Connect Arena for their final game of the season, taking on the Clover Park Timberwolves on Senior Night. Before tip-off, the team honored their three seniors: Michael Stogsdill, Nate Goode, and Lowell McWright.

Coach Bennett praised each senior

I knew the approach I needed to take to be on top,” he explained.

His dedication paid off in a big way, as he secured the district title. “My grit, grind, and perseverance prevailed on the mat at Districts,” Beckord said.

Trey StaRosa (157 lbs.) earned a runner-up finish, while other state qualifiers include Bryan Boers (120 lbs., 4th), Mark

for their contributions:

“Michael has been such a joy to coach over the last three years. Seeing his growth as a player and leader was truly special. He battled his way back from a football injury just to play his senior year. He’s a momentum-changing player, and I’m so grateful to have coached him.”

“Nate is a kid who just loves to work hard—always! He embraced his role as our key rebounder, setting the tone in every game. His growth over the last three years has been amazing, and I’m beyond grateful to have coached such a hard-working kid.”

“Lowell just loves to hoop. We were fortunate to have him join the program this year. He’s a great shooter and stepped up as a ball handler. Transferring as a senior can be tough, but he fit in seamlessly with his play and leadership. I can’t thank him enough for all his contributions.”

Unfortunately for the Cruisers, turnovers plagued them all night against Clover Park. Eatonville committed 28 turnovers, including six in the first quarter, allowing the Timberwolves to build a 26-16 lead. An 8-0 run early and another 8-0 run midway through the quarter made the deficit tough to overcome. McWright kept Eatonville competitive with 11 first-quarter points, while Goode added four.

A crushing 9-1 Clover Park run to start the second quarter widened the gap. Eatonville struggled with ball control, turning it over eight more times before halftime and falling behind 47-30 at the break. McWright continued his strong night, finishing with 18 first-half points.

The second half proved even tougher, as the Cruisers managed just 10 points in the third and eight in the

Devera (132 lbs., 4th), Jarin Ragazzo (165 lbs., 4th), Ethan Rogers (190 lbs., 3rd), and Aaron Tozier (285 lbs., 3rd). Teagan Croppi (113 lbs.) finished fifth and will compete in a wrestle-off this week for a chance at state.

The girls team placed sixth overall, with three of its four competitors securing state berths. Makenzie Ball (170 lbs.) led the way

fourth, ultimately losing 88-48. McWright led the team with 23 points, tying his season-high, while Goode, Samuel, and Jeremy Osborn Jr. each contributed six.

Despite the loss, Coach Bennett remained proud of his team: “It was an awesome night to celebrate our seniors. All three of them were monumental this year. They are the first group to set the culture for the future of the program moving forward.”

The Cruisers wrapped up the 202425 season with a 1-19 record. Their lone victory came early in January when they edged Tempe Prep 48-44 in the Coyote Basketball Invitational in Arizona. While the win-loss column may not reflect it, Coach Bennett saw plenty of positives from the season.

“A record of 1-19 may not jump off the page as success, but to us in this program, there is a lot to be proud of,” he said. “The team never quit. They played so hard for us coaches. We were so close in so many games. The other thing to note is that the growth of the culture was successful. While there were some bumps along the way, I am proud to confidently say that these kids also learned a lot about life. They took huge steps as young kids working to become young men. Transformation will be seen throughout the whole program. I wouldn't trade a second of the journey and am excited for what the future holds for Cruiser basketball.”

With a dedicated core and a foundation built on hard work and resilience, the Cruisers will look to turn this season’s lessons into future success. The contributions of their senior leaders will not be forgotten, as they have set the stage for the program’s continued growth.

with a second-place finish, while Khloee Young (100 lbs.) and Nala Baublits (105 lbs.) each took third to advance. Olivia Cole (105 lbs.) finished fourth and will serve as an alternate for the state tournament.

With a strong contingent heading to the Tacoma Dome, Eatonville will look to make its mark on the biggest stage in Washington high school wrestling.
