Reimagine Magnolia Village beautification project launches Valentine’s campaign By Jessica Keller
QA&Mag News editor
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Magnolia residents can celebrate their love of the community and work toward a common goal by donating to a special fundraising campaign. The Magnolia Village Love Match campaign stemmed from an anonymous donor’s offer to contribute $25,000 to the Reimagine Magnolia Village
“He really wanted this to become more than his $25,000 in a very short amount of time.” — Cheryl McQuiston Magnolia Beautification Committee chair beautification project — provided community members match the amount by the end of the month. The fundraising effort will close Feb. 28. Magnolia Beautification Committee chair Cheryl McQuiston, said the man, a lifelong Magnolia
resident, approached her with his offer earlier this month with the idea the money would go further if it became a community effort/ “He really wanted this to become more than his $25,000 in a very short amount of time,” McQuiston said. “It’s heartwarming
and humbling, at the same time.” She said the man was inspired to make his donation after seeing what was accomplished with the money raised during Phase 1 of the Reimagine Magnolia Village beautification project, which aims to create an inviting and attractive business core to residents and visitors by making improvements to the streetscape. Phase 1 featured durable, weather-resistant tables and

Climate Pledge Arena leadership, partners celebrate placement of last steel beam Friday Staff report Construction on the new Climate Pledge Arena in Queen Anne’s Uptown reached a significant milestone Friday with the topping out of the facility. Project leaders, Mortenson construction partners, other labor workers, city representatives and more celebrated at a special ceremony where the last beam of steel was placed in the facility. Adorned with an American flag, the last steel beam featured the name of the arena, as well as signatures of people instrumental in the project’s construction. According to project statistics, 8.9 tons of steel has been used in the building process to date, and 147,430 bolts were used to secure the steel. As well, 2,500 craftworkers have completed 1.3 million craft hours on the project to date. Climate Pledge Arena at
Seattle Center remains on track to open in fall 2021. It is expected to be the first arena in the world to receive net zero carbon certification. When complete, the arena’s interior will expand to 800,000 square feet, twice that of the previous arena. Climate Pledge Arena was tagged early on to be the professional arena of the NHL’s newest professional hockey team, the Seattle Kraken. It will also be the home of the WNBA Seattle Storm and Seattle University. It will have a 17,100-person capacity for hockey and a 18,100-person capacity for basketball. It is also expected to host more than 140 events per year, with a concert capacity of 17,200. The groundbreaking ceremony took place Dec. 5, 2018 at the west plaza of the arena. The Washington state Legislature is considering legislation that would make it illegal to openly carry weapons during protests or on the grounds of the state Capitol. Opponents of Senate Bill 5038 have labelled it an assault on the Second Amendment, while the bill’s supporters argue it is necessary to prevent more violent confrontations like the ones that occurred during public demonstrations last year. The bill, which was sponsored by 15 Democratic state senators, would make it a gross misdemeanor to carry a variety of weapons — including firearms, clubs, knives and knuckle dusters — while attending a public demonstration or on the grounds of the state Capitol. The ban would also apply to non-attendees at protests who

Regional Approach
Effective January 11, 2021, the State of Washington is launching Healthy Washington – Roadmap to Recovery which will use a regional approach for its upcoming phased recovery plan. These regions are largely based on the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) regions used for evaluating healthcare services given the concern for COVID-19’s potential impact on the healthcare system. There will be eight regions in Washington that fall along county lines. Most regions in Washington have four or more counties. These regions are designed based on the available health care services in the area which has a strong connection to the metrics we will be using for COVID-19 hospitalizations, case data, and general mobility of individuals. town and county buildings. Supporters of gun rights have jumped on the bill as an attack on Washingtonians’ Second Amendment rights. District 39 Republican Sen. Keith Wagoner, who represents most of Snohomish and Skagit counties and part of King County, argued in committee that there was “a conflict of logic,” as the proposed legislation supports the First Amendment right to protest in a way that “suspends” the Second Amendment. The state Senate report on the bill points out, however, that a number of restrictions on the Second Amendment already exist in law. On Thursday, the Senate Law and Justice Committee voted 5-4 to move the bill, with an amendment that changed the proximity to protests from 1,000 feet to 250 feet, on to the next stage of the legislative process, review by the Senate Rules Committee.

have been ordered to leave the area by law enforcement officials. Law enforcement officers would be exempt from the law while carrying out their duties. The bill seeks to prevent a repeat of violent incidents that occurred last year during protests. One incident in particular, a shooting that occurred during a confrontation between heavily armed political protesters near the Capitol building in December, weighed heavily on the minds of the senators. The Senate Law and Justice Committee heard testimony Jan. 26 from Olympia mayor Cheryl Selby, who described how violent protests interrupted a City Council meeting. “It haunts me every time I gavel in that the next time could end differently if someone in the room has a gun strapped to their chest,” she said. Selby also recommended expanding the bill to include city,

Do flying squirrels really fly? Flying squirrels may not really fly, but they do have flaps of skin on their bodies that act like parachutes and help them glide through the air. My friend Todd Wilson told me all about it. He’s a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon and graduate of Washington State University who researches Pacific Northwest ecosystems and the animals that call them home — including flying squirrels. When flying squirrels are trying to avoid predators, like weasels, sometimes they will run to the top of a tree. The weasel might think the flying squirrel has nowhere else to run. That’s when the flying squirrel makes its move. “The flying squirrel can just take off and glide,” Wilson said. “When they launch themselves from a tree, they can actually go quite a ways out, but they’re not actually flying.” Depending on the tree, flying squirrels can sometimes glide for hundreds of feet. As they glide, they can use their tail to steer around and between other trees. Flying squirrels are not only amazing to watch, but they also play an important part in forest ecosystems. While other tree squirrels eat a lot of nuts or seeds from tree cones, a big part of a flying squirrel’s diet is something different. They eat an organism called fungi that live under the soil. “Flying squirrels eat the fruits of the fungi in the forest — if the fruit is above ground, it is called a mushroom. If the fruit is below ground, we call it a truffle. Flying squirrels eat a lot of mushrooms and truffles, and then pass them through their digestive system,” Wilson said.
Flying squirrels help spread the fungi around the forest through their, well, poop. As new fungi grow, they suck up nutrients from the soil and pass on those nutrients to trees. In exchange, the trees give fungi some sugars that help the fungi grow. While flying squirrels play a big part in our forests, we rarely see them during the day. They are nocturnal, or active at night. But sometimes we can hear them. They are pretty quiet compared to other squirrels, but they occasionally make a chittering sound as they meet up with other flying squirrels. We sometimes hear a big slap when they land on a tree. After all, there’s a lot of power and speed in that glide.
When flying squirrels glide during the night, they may pass other nocturnal neighbors in the sky, like bats. Of all the thousands of mammal species on our planets, bats are the only mammals that can truly fly. You know, the living things in the forest are linked together in important ways. They need each other to live and grow. Humans also play a big part in our forest ecosystems. Can you think of ways humans are connected to the forest? Maybe you can even find some connections between you and a flying squirrel. Share your answers and ideas with us some time at Dr.Universe@wsu.edu. Sincerely, Dr. Universe

commotion, I come back to another wise saying: Nothing changes if nothing changes. I don’t remember the exact date when I realized what was happening on the streets of our inner city, but I know for me that was the day my love of Belltown ended. I had never seen a man writhe and collapse from an overdose on my way to the post office before. Lots of people walked by, and lots of people did nothing. The fact of our disregard was devastating. I walked on to mail my package and wandered down to the sculpture park. I sat down on the grass. And I knew exactly what I had to do. “The best life consists of a series of little lives,” my friend Ken wrote. When I want the best example of fatherly love, I write to Ken. And this is how relieved I was to read his email: I cried. Sometimes I think it is amazing how well our innate reflexes work. I find a good cry takes the edge off. So here’s what I think. Our city is not alone. I am not alone. Our whole country is struggling with the question where do we go from here? We are all trying to learn from the choices we have made and will make. And if I want a view of where my own decisions have led me, I will just look out my new window at my next little life to see every little thing I am supposed to. — Mary Lou Sanelli has published three works of non-fiction including “Among Friends,” and her first novel, “The Star Struck Dance Studio of Yucca Springs.” For more information about Sanelli and her work, visit www. marylousanelli.com.
Seattle Parks and Rec seeking input for South Lake Union Community Center Seattle Parks and Recreation is seeking participation to plan a new community center in the South Lake Union neighborhood. Located at the corner of Mercer Street and Dexter Avenue, the center will be a private-public partnership operated by SPR, but located on the ground floor of a private development project. The new center will be visible from the street with easy access for pedestrians, cyclists and people traveling by mass transit. SPR and the project design team is requesting input to help create a successful center for everyone. People are invited to visit the project’s online open house through Feb. 18 at slucc.infocommunity.org. This open house is an opportunity for residents to share priorities for the center’s activities and programming. Key features of the center include a full-size basketball court, fitness area and childcare. Residents are asked to share additional recreation priorities to help determine what activities and programs should be included in the new facility and design the layout of the spaces within the community center. Queen Anne & Magnolia News File photo Residents take advantage of benches, umbrellas, tables, chairs and other amenities installed in Magnolia Village to make the business district more inviting in this file photo from last summer. The Reimagine Magnolia Village beautification committee launched the Magnolia Village Love Match fundraising campaign this month after a resident, who wished to remain anonymous, offered a donation of $25,000 to go toward the next phases of the beautification project provided residents would match the amount. MATCH, FROM PAGE 1 chairs, umbrellas, newly painted benches, poles to hold flowering baskets and bistro lighting all installed along the business corridor along West McGraw Street between 32nd and 33rd avenues west. The last of the Phase 1 streetscape improvements were installed just in time for summer of 2020. Residents, tired of being cooped up inside from coronavirus pandemic restrictions, flocked to Magnolia Village to enjoy the sidewalk seating and attractive adornments, while business owners rejoiced at the renewed energy in traffic in the village. “I’ve had business owners say to me, because of the improvements, their businesses are doing better than expected during COVID,” McQuiston said. Magnolia Beautification Committee member Ann Goos said, while donations to the Reimagine Magnolia Village effort have not slowed, the generosity of the anonymous donor and the Magnolia Village Love Match fundraiser will give the effort a “real shot in the arm.” “It’s an amazing thing to see people invest in our local community in this way,” she said. A possible infusion of $50,000 from the Magnolia Village Love Match campaign would go a long way to help the beautification committee reach its $355,000 goal to complete phases 2 and 3 of the beautification project, which would expand streetscape improvements to McGraw Street West between 33rd and 35th avenues west.
McQuiston said the beautification committee has raised $116,000 for the next round of improvements already, and $166,000 by the end of the month would ensure phases 2 and 3 stayed on schedule. If all goes well, McQuiston said residents and businesses owners could be enjoying the newest streetscape additions by late spring/early summer. “The business owners in those other two blocks, they are so excited because they have never felt part of the village,” McQuiston said. Once phases 2 and 3 are complete, the Magnolia Beautification committee will turn its attention to phases 4 and 5 of the streetscape project, which will include improvements to 32nd and 33rd avenues west, from West Smith to West Lynn. As an added incentive to donate to the Magnolia Village Love Match and future streetscape fundraising efforts, all contributions are tax deductible through Magnolia Better Together, the fundraising nonprofit branch of the Magnolia Chamber of Commerce, which achieved 501 (c) (3) taxexempt status in November. To donate to the Magnolia Village Love Match, people can go to https://magnoliabeautification.com and click the “Donate Today” button and fill out the secure donation form. To donate by mail, residents should make checks payable to Magnolia Better Together (MBT), 3213 W. Wheeler No. 51, Seattle, WA 98199.
