The party at Magnolia Garden Center March 30 marked the end of an era as Magnolia Garden Center owners Chuck and Margaret Flaherty celebrated their retirement as well as the 25th anniversary of the business. The event also marked the changing of the guard as the community members who attended welcomed James Raebel as the new owner. The new ownership went into effect Thursday. For regular customers at the nursery and gift shop, Raebel is not a new face as he has been the manager for the past two years and, before that, served in a number of other roles — from buyer to landscape designer — for the Flahertys, who hired him in 2012. After a successful soft opening last weekend, business owner Valerie Chan is looking forward to welcoming the community to Queen Càphê starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. Chan is the owner of Queen Càphê, a new restaurant in Queen Anne. “I just love what I do,” she said. “It makes me happy when people eat my food and enjoy it.” Chan took over the lease of 2231 Queen Ave. N., on the corner of McGraw and Queen Anne Avenue, and has spent the last four months transforming the place into a family hangout that will serve banh mi, egg rolls, bubble waffles and high-quality beverages.

Cà phê is the Vietnamese word for coffee. The Queen Càphê will be serving Illy Coffee drinks. And Chan wants the neighborhood to know that she plans to offer “the best bubble tea in town.” For those who haven’t tried it yet, boba tea is a beverage traditionally served cold that has a tea base, a milk or fruit flavor and edible tapioca or fruit-flavored pearls — known as boba. It originated in Taiwan in the early 1980s, and the popularity quickly spread to other parts of the world. In her quest for the best ingredients, Chan imports all of her boba pearls from Taiwan. These edible pearls are chewy little bubbles of tapioca found at the bottom of the cup. The cafe will
