Photo by Laura Marie Rivera After COVID-19, design delays and a statewide concrete worker strike, this month utility workers finally began underground electrical work along Boston Street in Queen Anne in preparation for the future 21Boston construction project, which will eventually feature a new, larger Safeway store as well as housing units. The current Safeway will close for business on June 4. Developer Maria Barrientos, BarrientosRYAN LLC, said demolition is expected to begin in mid-June. Read more in next week’s paper.

Magnolia Farmers Market new season starts June 4 with more action, vendors

By Jessica Keller

QA&Mag News editor The Magnolia Farmers Market returns to Magnolia Village June 4, and market managers have high hopes for the upcoming season. After COVID-19 derailed Seattle farmers markets in 2020, leading to Magnolia’s season to be cancelled altogether, market manager August Franzen was pleasantly surprised how well it bounced back in 2021. He does not expect any different this year. “Our expectations kept being blown out of the water last year, and we expect them to keep being blown out of the water,” he said. The Magnolia Farmers Market takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday, except for Aug. 6, when the market is closed and West McGraw Street used for SeaFair activities. Responding

to visitors’ requests, however, the market has been extended three extra weeks and will conclude Oct. 15. “We are starting the year without COVID restrictions and with the full freedom to bring back the events and fun part of the market, too,” Franzen said, adding events are still being planned but will include cooking demonstrations and performances. Resuming market activities is a particular goal for organizers this year. Franzen said, while the number of people who visited last year did not reach 2019’s record shopper counts, the vendors reported their total sales were comparable to 2019’s. He said that indicates the visitors coming last year were regular shoppers doing the bulk of

MAGNOLIA, FROM PAGE 1 market their weekly grocery buying there. “Where we have to grow is the people who come back a little less regularly,” Franzen said. He said bringing back most regular programming will hopefully reinvigorate people to visit the market beyond regular shopping. Even with no mandatory restrictions, however, Franzen said not all events will return, such as the annual cherry pit-spitting contest because, as fun as it was, he does not think people are ready to support that, which begs the question why it became an annual event. Instead, Franzen said, the goal is to celebrate cherries in other ways, possibly cherry-tasting events where people try different varieties and compare them. Apples will be celebrated the same way, he said. “In terms of new events, I would look to see celebrations and taste tests of fruits that are most in season at that market,” he said. Franzen said he expects the market to feature around 30 vendors each week, with up to 40 around July or August. Franzen also can’t guarantee vendors will be at the market each week. This year has already been tough for some farmers, Franzen said, because an overly wet spring has delayed the arrival of

some of the crops and, in some cases, damaged crops or farm infrastructure. “It has been a really, really hard winter and spring for everyone,” Franzen added. As a result, some of the usual vendors may be coming a few weeks later than usual or won’t have the quantity of produce shoppers typically expect at a certain time of the summer. “Everything is a little slower this season, but it will catch up over time,” Franzen said. That some vendors are able to come at all to the farmers market is positive, he added. “Mariposa Farm, in particular, had some pretty catastrophic flooding, and I am just glad to see how they have recovered,” Franzen said. Because of the rocky start to 2022, Franzen said a vibrant and busy Magnolia Farmers Market will be more important than ever this year. “It’ll be really good to see the community come out and see these farms coming back,” Franzen said. This year’s Magnolia Farmers Market opening day will be Franzen’s last as he will become the full-time manager for Columbia City’s market. Longtime market employee Sarah Cohn will become Magnolia’s full-time manager starting June 11.

Bigelow Block Sale returning to QA for annual buying fun By Jessica Keller

QA&Mag News editor After a two-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bigelow Block Sale is returning this year in Queen Anne. The popular, block garage sale, in which residents put out items to sell in front of their houses, will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 4 along Bigelow Avenue North and adjoining streets. The event is a Bigelow Avenue tradition, said organizer Kim Wesselman, a real estate adviser for Windemere Real Estate Midtown. The event was started by Windermere real estate broker Renee Stern over 20 years ago before turning over the reins to Wesselman and her coworker Audrey

Manzanares. Not only is it popular among avenue residents eager to sell belongings and people in the neighborhood looking for a deal, in previous years it has attracted garage sale enthusiasts from other neighborhoods, she said. “It’s really lovely to bring it back this year,” Wesselman said, adding the event is a good way to reestablish lost connections with neighbors and other people these last two years. While she does not know how many people along Bigelow will participate as sellers this year, Wesselman estimates it has averaged 40 participants annually. “It’s a huge participation on the block,” she said, adding it runs from Bigelow and Prospect north and goes past Boston to Wheeler.

‘Notes from the Garden’ book signing at Magnolia’s Bookstore

Former Queen Anne & Magnolia News publisher Mike Dillon will sign copies of “Notes from the Garden: Creating a Pacific Northwest Sanctuary” from noon to 2 p.m. June 18 at Magnolia’s Bookstore, 3206 W. McGraw St. in Magnolia Village. The book is written by Madeleine Wilde, who died in 2018; Wilde wrote her “Notes from the

Wesselman said families have also gotten involved, with children setting up lemonade stands or selling cookies. “It’s really what people want to do because it’s their event,” she said. Volunteers are always welcome for the event, and Wesselman said this year children can get their faces or arms painted and get balloons. “We want it to be festive,” she said. Wesselman said people who want to participate as sellers register their houses online and pay a $25 participation fee, a portion of which benefits Queen Anne Helpline. Wilde’s husband, David Streatfield, professor emeritus in the department of landscape architecture at the University of Washington, wrote the foreword; Mark Hinshaw, architect and former architectural critic for the Seattle Times and Crosscut, did the illustrations.

Is shrimp on the menu tonight? Maybe it should be. Coming in at just around seven calories per medium-size shrimp, this crustacean is low in calories and high in lean protein and is one of only a few dishes that provides the beneficial antioxidants selenium and astaxanthin, according to The American Shrimp Company. The majority of North American shrimp is harvested from the Gulf of Mexico, ensuring fresh catches for the United States and Canada. Around 244 million pounds of shrimp are produced each year. An abundance of shrimp means the opportunities for delicious meals are endless. For something with a lot of flavor and crowd appeal, try this recipe for a shrimp quesadilla courtesy of Eastern Fish Company. ou’ve likely heard the adage, “right plant, right place.” It is probably gardening’s golden rule. If you don’t match the plants’ needs for soil, sun, and moisture conditions, it just won’t thrive. A corollary, or subset of that rule because it’s really the same concept, just not often talked about, is planting at the right time for a specific plant. If you’ve gardened for a bit, you’ve noticed that plants follow their own time clock, not ours. Sometimes, they get tricked by unexpected weather blips, but usually their internal barometers know better than we do. Peas like cool weather, we are told, but if you plant them too early, when the ground is saturated, they may rot before they can germinate. “Plant peas on Saint Patrick’s Day” may be a good rule of thumb where you garden, but it

Some seeds and plants, like many half-hardy annuals such as poppies and calendula, can overwinter in our chilly, wet soil, but plants that like it warmer would rather have a toasty soil bed to

Best senior travel discounts in 2022 Dear Savvy Senior, What are some of the best travel discounts available to seniors? My husband and I are about to retire and are interested in traveling more but live on a tight budget. Frugal Travelers Dear Frugal, There are literally hundreds of different travel-related discounts available to older travelers that can add up to save you hundreds of dollars on your next trip. To qualify, you’ll need to meet the age requirement, which varies by business. Some discounts may be available as soon as you turn 50, but most don’t kick in until you turn 55, 60, 62 or 65. Here’s a rundown of top travel discounts, along with some extra tips to help you save.

Ways to save

The first thing to know is that most businesses don’t advertise them, but many give senior discounts just for the asking, so don’t be shy. You also need to be aware that when it comes to senior travel bargains, the “senior discount,” if available, may not always be the best deal. Hotels, resorts, airlines and cruise lines, for example, offer

Before you book, always ask about the lowest possible rate and the best deal available. Another way you can save is to be flexible when you travel. Lastminute travel deals can offer huge savings, as does traveling during off-season or off-peak times, and avoiding holidays. Club memberships can also garner you a wide variety of travel bargains. AARP, for example has dozens of travel discounts available on hotels, rental cars, cruises, vacation packages and more — see AARP.org/benefits-discounts. The American Automobile Association, AAA.com, is another membership club that provides some great travel discounts to members at any age.

Types of discounts

Here are of some of the best senior travel discounts available in 2022. Airline: British Airways offers AARP members $65 off economy travel and $200 off business club travel. American, Delta and United also offer senior fares to passengers 65 and older in certain markets but are extremely limited. And JetBlue offers 5 percent discounts for retired military and veterans that are enrolled in Veterans Advantage. Train: Amtrak provides a 10 percent discount to travelers 65plus and a 10 percent discount to passengers over age 60 on crossborder services operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Editor’s Note: On the April Senior Scene page in the Queen Anne & Magnolia News, Bayview CEO Nancy Weinbeck wrote a column, “The power of poetry for older brains.”

Poetry not just for the young

People often associate the writing of “real” poetry (poetry as literature) with poets who die tragically young. Keats and Shelley both died before they were 30. Thomas Chatterton killed himself when he was 17. Wilfred Owen, perhaps the greatest English war poet, died at 25, a week before the Armistice. But for every poet who died tragically young, one can think of poets who lived and wrote well into their senior years: Wordsworth was 80 when he died, Tennyson was 83, and Frost, a whopping 88.

Maya Angelou was 86 when she died in 2014. Antonio Gaimoneda, arguably the best Spanish poet of the age, is still writing brilliantly at age 90. I am 78, a resident of University House (retirement home) in Seattle, and an actively practicing and publishing poet. I just returned from a festival in Punta Umbria, Spain, and will return to Spain in July for voces del extremo, another, larger festival in Moguer. More than 30 of my books (many of them poetry collections) have been published. It is great that there are old people who dabble in poetry, who enjoy it for its creative possibilities and whose poems are remembered and celebrated by friends and families. It is also great that there are old poets who continue to write and publish in their 70s, 80s and beyond. Here is a poem I read to the Seattle City Council a few years ago. I offer it as tribute to all poets, amateur and professional, young and (especially) old. Lyn Coffin Wallingford The Reception Line “Last night, I dreamt about Aunt Percy, the spunky alcoholic I so loved for being who she was — funny and flawed. Leaving a bar one night when she was young, she rammed her car into a backroad bridge abutment, then made her way in heels to the closest farm and called the police, complaining that someone had moved the bridge. Aunt Percy, old, was in my dream’s reception line: she offered apricots: cold and sweet. Aunt Percy, I said, you look wonderful. But thin, she said, and it wasn’t good. A question came up: someone in the family needed immediate help. “Don’t worry,”

I said, which is almost always a mistake. I think dream-talking with the dead may be a sign my own death’s not far off, and there’s not much time left for me to tell it like I think it is, which is the farthest honesty can take us while we breathe. And in the dream, I spoke to my father, and was glad to see him looking well. The last real time was in a Scottsdale hospital: I went in as soon as the nurses were done with bathing and shaving and feeding him. Garbled as he was, he got out my name and rumbled something about “feet” and “cold.” I rubbed his feet till he signaled me to stop, left a picture of my mother by his bed, and walked back to his nearby empty house, meaning to return after lunch. I was hardly in the door when the hospital called… In the dream, my father, too, was standing in the reception line: he looked happy and healthy. I said I was glad to see him. Then, I added, speaking from someplace deeper than memory, “You’re my father, among other things.” When I woke up, I knew: my father’s love was like a ship and the ship wrecked and went down and wood floated to the shore of the island of my life, and I picked up all the timber I could and used it for fires when the nights were cold. Now I’m awake, a day older, aware it doesn’t matter when we die what we had, only what we did. Whether you know it or not, you may, like me, be so close to the edge, your feet are beginning to get cold. Your dead, too, may have formed a reception line — and so many in our family need immediate help.”

PLANTING, FROM PAGE 4 them against the real-time conditions happening in your yard. For instance, tomatoes. Yes, it always comes back to tomatoes with me. But as they are America’s favorite crop, and as we are past Mother’s Day (another one of those axiomatic rules), Seattleites are itching to plant, so it makes sense to discuss them. Tomatoes like the air temperature to be regularly over 55 degrees Fahrenheit — even at night — and over 60 in the soil. First, our evening temps have been in the low 40s, and even our daytime highs were barely passing 50 degrees during the week leading up to Mother’s Day. For more data, I bought a soil thermometer this year, which looks identical to a candy thermometer I bought for making Insta-Pot yogurt, but I haven’t compared the readings. In any case, if it is correct, my soil is warmer than expected. I also learned my raised bed, which is “supposed” to warm up the fastest, wasn’t appreciably higher than my warmest areas. Last weekend, temperatures throughout my yard were hovering around 60 degrees, while they were more like 47 a month ago. Because of the air temperatures, though, I’m still babying my seedlings and starts in the house under lights and likely will plant around the first week of June. Even then I’ll probably add some external

temperature control in the form of season extenders (marketed as “Wall o’ Waters”) or frost-cloth fabric wrapped around the tomato cages. The reason for that timing is you want to allow a week or so to “harden off ” or acclimate your indoor plants transitioning outside. This goes for the florist hydrangea or jasmine you were gifted or your houseplants you’d like to give a summer vacation. Fear not — you can plant tomatoes here through mid-June and still get a great harvest if you choose varieties that mature within 55 to 75 days. If you have a raised bed or open space, you can give that soil a head start by covering in plastic — clear, red or black — for the next couple of weeks. Another idea is surrounding plants with milk jugs filled with water, or bricks or rocks, which act as heat storage overnight. Other annual plants that like it hotter than we’ve got it right now are squash, beans, eggplant, peppers, melon, sunflowers and zinnias. This is still a perfect time to plant cooler crops like peas, potatoes, lettuce, beets, spinach and kale.

Seattle Storm practice facility permit filed Force 10 Facilities Press Release

Force 10 Facilities, LLC (F10F), submitted a Master Use Permit application for a new, state-of-the-art professional basketball performance center, Friday. The center will serve as the dedicated practice facility for the WNBA’s Seattle Storm. Its design will both celebrate the Storm’s success in Seattle and allow the franchise to expand its efforts to grow opportunities for female athletes and youth in the city. F10F is developing the Seattle Storm Center for Basketball Performance on a 50,000-square-foot parcel in Seattle’s Interbay neighborhood. The design will include two side-by-side basketball courts, the “Storm Team Center” with locker rooms, a lounge and a nutrition center for the players, and strength and conditioning training spaces. The facility will include room for diagnostics and physical therapy, as well as the franchise’s business offices. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2023 and be completed in time for training camp ahead of the 2024 WNBA season. “We are excited to create a state-of-the-art training facility for our team and for our city.

The Storm facility will provide our athletes with a dedicated space to support them holistically, from training to health and wellness,” Seattle Storm co-owner Lisa Brummel said. “This facility reflects our franchise legacy, our athletes’ success, and aims to promote and grow the women’s game and expand youth access to play.” The women-led project team includes owner’s representative barrientosRYAN LLC, a design team led by ZGF Architects and Shive-Hattery Architects, general contractor Sellen Construction and landscape architect
