Man who stabbed ex found guilty of murder Staff News Report
A King County jury found a man accused of fatally stabbing the mother of his child inside the Seattle Center Armory in November of 2018 was found guilty of first-degree murder last week. David Lee Morris, who was 30 at the time, was tried for murder in the Nov. 2, 2018, stabbing
death of Gabriella Garcia, who was 28 at the time. According to police reports, Morris stabbed Garcia multiple times in front of their young son, who was 5 at the time, near MOD Pizza in the armory food court. According to Queen Anne & Magnolia News report, Garcia died shortly after arriving at Harborview Medical Center. She had been issued a protection order
against Morris at the time. Morris was arrested by authorities after a bystander held him at gunpoint and another person pepper sprayed him outside the Seattle Center Armory. According to the Queen Anne & Magnolia News, police reports state officers found Morris at Fifth Avenue North and Thomas Street and tased him twice because he did not drop the knife.
The article stated Morris told investigators at the time that he killed Garcia to “make a better life” for his son. According to the article, Morris reportedly told investigators he did not like Garcia bringing other men around their son, and he knew he would not get custody. Morris is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 6 at King County Courthouse.

Hoping for a better 2021 season Queen Anne Farmers Market kicking off 15th year on June 3 By Jessica Keller
QA & Mag News editor Returning for its 15th year, the Queen Anne Farmers Market will kick off its new season June 3 with a renewed sense of hope. Executive Director Matt Kelly said in 2019, 110,000 shoppers visited the market, whereas that number dropped to just under 25,000, last year. “That said, 2020 was a record year for farm sales,” he said. “We
recorded the highest farm sales we’ve ever had, and we will continue to show up for farms.” The market is open from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. every Thursday beginning June 3 in upper Queen Anne. For the first three weeks, the market will be set up on West Crockett and the Queen Anne pool parking lot, Kelly said. From June 24 through Aug. 26, while school is out for summer, the

Magnolia event returning June 5 after one-year hiatus
By Jessica Keller
QA & Mag News editor After a 2020 that saw the Magnolia Farmers Market cancelled, this year the popular Saturday event is coming back with some new and returning vendors and a new director. The neighborhood market returns this year with August Franzen taking the helm. Franzen, who is also the manager of the Columbia City market, was part of the Magnolia market staff in 2019 and hopes this year brings renewed success to the neighborhood. “It’s always been a fun outing and a positive community space, and that’s what I want to bring back,” Franzen said. Franzen said 2019 was a “busy, bustling” year for the farmers mar-

Senior Scene Exercise and brain health in older adults D id you know May 26th is National Senior Health and Fitness Day? When we think of fitness, we often think about muscular strength and cardiovascular health, but fitness also plays a key role in keeping our brains healthy. As a clinical health psychology graduate student in 1995, I paid my daily dues at the university gym. When my adviser who was doing research on cognitive ability and lung function asked me about my exercise habit, I told him my time on the cardio equipment, where I spent most of gym hours, cleared my head and helped me think better. We pondered why that might be, as there was little research on the topic at the time. I could neither quantify, qualify, nor explain

These changes that higher frequency brain activity come from exercise eventually
lead to better cognitive performance. Some studies have also shown neural growth in the hippocampus, which plays a critical role in memory. Studies on exercise have also shown an increase in connections between parts of the brain involved in different aspects of cognitive function that can become impaired in older adults, such as memory, attention, decisionmaking and sensory perception. Better communication between these different brain structures brings improvement in cognitive function. Most recently, an animal study reported in the New York Times has shown that exercise induces the production of a protein that appears to improve brain health and make older brains perform
more like younger brains on a variety of cognitive tasks. We all want better functioning brains, especially as we age. We’ve always suspected that exercise could play a role, and research is beginning to bear out that assumption. Of course, please check with your doctor before beginning any kind of exercise program. Explore opportunities in your own home or in your neighborhood. Life Plan Communities like Bayview also offer fitness programs that specialize in training for older adults. No matter your path, see how you can work in some exercise and do your brain a favor. Happy Senior Health And Fitness Day, everyone! MAGNOLIA, FROM PAGE 1 kets, and the goal is to get back to that in both sales and yield. “We are doing everything that we can to keep the market how it has been for so many years,” Franzen said. The Magnolia Farmers Market, which is part of the Seattle Farmers Market organization, takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday beginning June 5 through Sept. 25 in the Magnolia Village. Franzen said people who have visited other neighborhood farmers markets in the city this year are going to see much of the same set up. Instead of the vendors lining up next to each other, they will be six to 10 feet apart in keeping with health department regulations. The number of vendors will be fewer, but not by much, Franzen said. Opening day will feature 29 vendors, and over the course of the season, it will grow to 33 or 34. The number of entrances to the market will be limited to two, one on either end of the market, and there is a cap of 150 shoppers allowed into the market at one time. Franzen said while there have been small lines at other markets, they tend to move quickly. Masks will be required for all the nonprofit staff and vendors,
and they are encouraged for shoppers, as well. Franzen said these restrictions are subject to change based on how the King County Health Department interprets Gov. Jay Inslee’s new reopening guidelines, but this is what organizers have planned for. Unlike last year, vendors with prepared food are welcome, but Franzen said people are not allowed to eat in the market itself, but Magnolia has plenty of seating on McGraw. Of the vendors, some are longtime fixtures at the market, Franzen said. This is the 10th year Hayton Farms Berries, from Skagit County, has been at the market. Olsen Farms from Colville will return with its lamb, pork and beef, and Mariposa Farms will again feature mixed vegetables. The market will also offer some new-to-Magnolia vendors, as well, including La Pasta, from Seattle, which sells fresh-made pasta, and Fantello Farmstead Creamery out of Enumclaw, which features cheese and butter. “We have really tried to prioritize our longtime farmers, and a lot of those vendors who have maybe not been able to make it to market recently,” Franzen said. Of the hot-food vendors returning, all are classics, Franzen said, including Mystery Bay Sea-

To learn more go to https://web6. seattle.gov/Examiner/case/MUP21-016. The Magnolia Community Council is also seeking financial support to hire a land-use attorney to help in the appeal process.

Franzen said, since the mission of the farmers market is to support small, independent Washington Farmers, the number of vendors reflects that goal. “But as some of our restrictions lift and we’re able to welcome in more farms, we’ll be able to welcome in more prepared food,” Franzen said. As restrictions lift, Franzen hinted that some special events and cooking demonstrations will resume, although some will not. “As much fun as cherry-pit spit was, we really didn’t think about particulates in the air, so that won’t be coming back to the

How do you learn something hard? There are so many different things we can learn in our world, but that doesn’t mean learning is always so easy. Maybe you want to learn a process, like how to complete Rubik’s cube, code an app, design a solution to a problem or answer science questions. My friend Sarah Fick, an assistant professor of science education at Washington State University, was excited to hear your question. She said one way to learn something hard is to ask a lot of questions of yourself and other people. Questions like: Why is it hard? Are you trying to remember something? Are you trying to understand how it works? Are you trying to solve a problem that’s hard to solve? Can you design something or come up with an idea that will help you solve that problem? Where can you find more information about your problem or who can you ask about it? “Depending on what experiences you’ve had in learning — and the knowledge you’ve gained from your family and community — you are going to come at these problems with your own strengths,” Fick said. Things that are easy for you, might be hard for someone else or the opposite could be true. Fick reminded me that while we can learn a process, we can also learn more about how a process works. That’s what scientists do — they help us bring deeper knowledge into the world. Through collecting data, researchers can help us build on current knowledge to create new knowledge. Another thing scientists do is create a model or draw a picture showing how they think the process works. A model can sometimes help us understand what we know and what we still have questions about. When you are learning something hard, it also helps to ask yourself what is motivating you to learn. Maybe the motivation is that
you want a good grade on a test. We call that extrinsic motivation. But maybe you want to learn how to do something for, well, you. Then, you have intrinsic motivation. When motivation comes from within, it often helps us learn. Finally, while it may feel frustrating to learn difficult subjects or tasks, that’s sometimes a good sign. You might just be wrestling with knowledge that’s new to you and might be on your way to an “Aha!” moment when you gain a better understanding. One of the areas Fick researches is helping us better understand how students can use their knowledge from one subject, such as
math, to help them learn more about another area, like science. Learning often happens when we find connections, including connections to our daily life. There are a lot of different factors that go into learning something hard, and these are just a few. The next time you find yourself facing a learning challenge, take a deep breath, ask yourself some good questions and get ready for the next step on your learning journey — wherever it takes you. Sincerely, Dr. Universe

At the conclusion of the sale, the deposits of the unsuccessful bidders will be returned to them. The Secretary may grant an extension of time within which to deliver the remainder of the payment. All extensions will be for a 15-day increments for a fee of $500.00, paid in advance. The extension fee will be in the form of a certified or cashier’s check made payable to the Secretary of HUD. If the high bidder closes the sale prior to the expiration of any extension period, the unused portion of the extension fee shall be applied toward the amount due. If the high bidder is unable to close the sale within the required period, or within any extensions of time granted by the Secretary, the high bidder may be required to forfeit the cash deposit or, at the election of the foreclosure commissioner after consultation with the HUD representative, will be liable to HUD for any costs incurred as a result of such failure. The commissioner may, at the direction of the HUD representative, offer the property to the second highest bidder for an amount equal to the highest price offered by that bidder. There is no right of redemption, or right of possession based upon a right of redemption, in the mortgagor or others subsequent to a foreclosure completed pursuant to the Act. Therefore, the Foreclosure Commissioner will issue a Deed to the purchaser(s) upon receipt of the entire purchase price in accordance with the terms of the sale as provided herein. HUD does not guarantee that the property will be vacant. The scheduled foreclosure sale shall be cancelled or adjourned if it is established, by documented written application of the mortgagor to the Foreclosure Commissioner not less than 3 days before the date of sale, or otherwise, that the default or defaults upon which the foreclosure is based did not exist at the time of service of this notice of default and foreclosure sale, or all amounts due under the mortgage agreement are tendered to the Foreclosure Commissioner, in the form of a certified or cashier’s check payable to the Secretary of HUD, before public auction of the property is completed. The amount that must be paid if the mortgage is to be reinstated prior to the scheduled sale is $448,547.12 as of 06/03/2021, plus all other amounts that would be due under the mortgage agreement if payments under the mortgage had not been accelerated, advertising costs and postage expenses incurred in giving notice, mileage by the most reasonable road distance for posting notices and for the Foreclosure Commissioner’s attendance at the sale, reasonable and customary costs incurred for title and lien record searches, the necessary out-of-pocket costs incurred by the Foreclosure Commissioner for recording documents, a commission for the Foreclosure Commissioner, and all other costs incurred in connection with the
foreclosure prior to reinstatement. MARKET, FROM PAGE 1 farmers market take place on West Crockett and First Avenue West, which Kelly said allows for more shopping. Then when school starts, the market will return to the pool parking lot. “I would say that the 2020 market season was challenging, and we were really grateful to have our customers rally to support us through a pretty unknown time, and 2021 is really going to be about recovery and growing these small-food businesses,” Kelly said. “We’re really looking forward to seeing the community out and shopping but also engaging and seeing where our food is coming from.” Kelly said the 2021 market will continue to look different than prior to 2019. Masks will be required, social distancing maintained, a rope perimeter will be used to cordon off the market, and the capacity will be regulated to four shoppers per vendor, or 200 shoppers at a time. At the same time, Kelly said staff are planning to change how the market operates based on public health recommendations. To reduce trip and wait times, Kelly said shoppers are asked to come with lists and continue to follow COVID-19 safety guidelines. “We want to keep all of our shoppers and vendors safe, much of the same way we operated last year,” Kelly said. A new feature this year will be three harvest markets the Queen Anne Farmers Market is hosting this year, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 30, Nov. 20 and Dec. 18. “We’re really excited,” Kelly said. “This is a really fabulous step to bring more farmers and vendors to the neighborhood.” Unlike last year, the farmers market will have multiple entrances, and shoppers may walk whichever direction they like. Prepared-food vendors will return, but they will be serving packaged food to go only, as

shoppers are not allowed to eat or drink in the market. “But we are going to be bringing back some of our core program that we missed last year,” Kelly said, adding that the market will feature a to-go children’s craft activity in a bag. “I would say, on the farmers side, we’re going to have a lot of familiar faces,” Kelly
said, adding the market is excited to have Vashon Garlic and Mom’s Microgarden out of Bonney Lake, as well as Holmquist Hazelnuts and Xiong Cha and Cha Gardens, florist and flower garden out of Snohomish. Foothills Farms, a breakaway success last year at the market, Kelly said, will return with its sustainably raised chicken eggs that sold out almost every week. McIntyre Fam-
ily Farms, which raises all of its own sheep, will also be on hand selling both meet and sheep fibers. “We’re a big berry market for sure, and on opening day we’ll also have strawberries from Sidhu Farm, Hayton Farms, Our Family Farm and Skagit Sun Farms,” Kelly said. Skagit Gourmet Mushrooms, a mushroom farm, will join the market in late September and October. Among the processors will be two bakeries, Liberated Foods/Askatu Bakery, which features gluten- and allergen-free bakery, and The French Guys Bakery, both from Seattle. Haxan Ferments is a small hot sauce and vinegar company based in Seattle, and Salt Blade features cured meats and sausages. Among the prepared-food vendors, which will be on rotation, Alaska Weathervane Scallop will return, as will Kathmandu MoMoCha, a truck featuring Nepalese food. There will also be beers for sale, as well as a new winery, Drum Roll Wines, which sources its grapes from Yakima and eastern Washington, and a new cidery, Dragon’s Head Cider, out of Vashon Island. “Our shoppers have always gravitated toward meeting the producers and learning about the food and beverages for sale,” Kelly said. The market is also welcoming the return of the community tent and sponsor tents, Kelly said. The market’s three presenting sponsors are David Rice/Edward Jones, Metropolitan Market and Aegis Living on Galer and Rodgers Park. On opening day, Queen Anne resident and District 30 Rep. Liz Berry will ring the opening bell, kicking off the market season. “This market has been built on volunteer support, and we encourage anybody who is interested in volunteering to sign up,” Kelly said, adding people can sign up on the Queen Anne Farmer’s Market website, https://qafm.org.
