As a disc jockey who worked for different radio stations in Seattle for many years, Queen Anne resident DeAnna Lee knows what it is like for women trying to carve out their own niche or create something for themselves. To give women that place, Lee, a longtime dancer and choreographer started the Boot Boogie Babes, a line-dance troupe just for women in 2014. As a long-time dancer, teacher and choreographer with a background that includes two-step, polka, waltz, East and West Coast swing, cha cha, jitterbug and line dancing, Lee said she wanted the Boot Boogie Babes to be an organization where any woman could come to learn how to dance, make friends and, perhaps, fill some need in their lives they didn’t know was missing in a safe, welcoming place.

DeAnna Lee, a former radio disc jockey, started the line-dance group for women in 2014 and began running it full time in 2020 after she was laid off because of COVID. Lee said Boot Boogie Babes lets women know that life is not over for them once they reach a certain age or experience some
other significant life change. “You can be empowered at any age, any size and from any background, and that’s our mission
statement,” Lee said. “That is the culture of our organization.”

Magnolia Village Car Show returns Sunday By Jessica Keller
QA&Mag News editor
Photo courtesy Eric Berge One of the cars that will be highlighted at this year’s Magnolia Village Car Show is this 1967 Top Fuel Dragster called ‘The Dragon.’
Last year, when it became clear Eric Berge could not host the popular Magnolia Village Car Show, he arranged for some car enthusiasts he knew to just go cruising in their vehicles. But it wasn’t the same, Berge said. So he is very excited that hot rods, muscle cars and more will adorn McGraw Street once more this weekend. “Somebody called it the happiest car show they’ve ever been to,” Berge said. “I said, ‘I’ll take that.’ ” The car show will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Magnolia Village business district, from 32nd to 34th Av-
enue West on McGraw Street. This year, registration for the car show will take place at 8 a.m. Sunday at the corner of 32nd Avenue West. Cost to register is $20, and all types of vehicles are welcome. People who register a vehicle will receive a shirt with this year’s logo. Berge said all entry fees go to Northwest Harvest, a nonprofit organization that supports food banks. Berge pays any additional costs, and the Magnolia Chamber of Commerce pays for the insurance. “I just like seeing what Berge, who owns Werner’s Crash Shop in Uptown and lives

in Magnolia, said the car show attracts between 75 and 100 car owners each year, featuring everything from vintage hot rods and muscle cars to more recent models. Berge has been entering his cars into the show since 2004, and he took it over in 2008, changing the format to make it more friendly. “I thought why don’t I do it,” he said. Prior to 2008, the cars entered into the show were judged and awards presented in any number of categories, including best car to go out on a date in. Berge said he changed the format because he wanted to just keep the event fun and avoid bad feelings among car owners.
“I wanted it to be a community show where people got a chance to meet their neighbors and bring their cars they were working on,” Berge said. “I didn’t want any animosity from judging.” Berge also doesn’t want to impose too many restrictions on people showing their cars, either. Not only do the cars entered not have to be vintage, Berge isn’t that strict about the type of vehicle on display, having once convinced the owner of a recumbent bike to enter his transportation one year. “I just want to see what everybody likes,” Berge said. In addition to allowing enthusiasts to show off their favorite cars, Berge said the car show does introduce people to automobiles not frequently seen or driven any more.
“Kids get to see what cars used to look like,” Berge said. Berge will be entering in six of his own vehicles this year, including a 1964 Chevelle, a 1965 Comet, a 1925 Model T and a 1944 Coupe. Another highlight will be a 1967 Top Fuel Dragster called The Green Dragon, whose owner will be on hand to answer questions. Another car owner will be bringing his 1948 Austin Sedan from Kirkland to the show. “This is all about nostalgia,” he said. While he is excited the car show is returning, Berge said people should use their own discretion about COVID when attending. “I just say be precautionary and cognizant of your fellow human being,” he said.

What is better, a face mask or shield? If you are like me, you’ve probably seen people wearing face masks, face shields or even both at the same time. To find out more about your question, I talked to my friend Armine Ghalachyan, a researcher at Washington State University. She’s curious about how apparel, including face masks, can help people in our world. First, she said it helps to think about how a virus spreads. When humans laugh, talk, cough and sneeze, they release tiny droplets into the air. A single sneeze has been shown to release around 40,000 droplets. These droplets are made up of mucus and saliva from our nose and mouth — and they are just the right travelling size for a virus like SARS-CoV-2, which causes the novel coronavirus. When people design face masks they think about these droplets. They research what materials work best to help block out droplets that might contain a virus that can make us sick. But it’s not just a question of material. They also have to think about how masks fit on our faces. Face shields are not as effective as face masks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While face shields may provide some eye protection, they leave a lot of gaps around the face. That makes it easier for a person to pass droplets that might contain the virus to other people. There’s also not much material there to keep the person wearing a shield from breathing in other people’s droplets. Meanwhile, face masks that fit over the nose, mouth and cheeks can help keep droplets from spreading around. One type of mask, an N-95, is made up of material called polypropylene, and blocks 95 percent of tiny particles.
DANCING, FROM PAGE 1 Lee said the nice thing about line dancing is anybody can do it, regardless of their age, size or dance experience. Members of the Boot Boogie Babes range in age from 21 to over 70 and are in all stages of their life, Lee said. No matter what, women can find their place on one of her teams. “If you give it your all, and you give it your focus, you are going to grow just naturally,” she said. While Lee said she enjoys teaching women how to dance and choreographing new routines for them, she said her biggest thrill is seeing the positive impacts the Boot Boogie Babes can have on a woman’s life, especially if she is joining after experiencing a rough patch. Lee said women can come in shy and uncertain, but slowly they gain confidence and blossom with a little encouragement, friendship and their new skills. “You know, that’s the beauty of this, and that’s why I do this,” she said. “That’s the biggest piece of it.” Lee said the organization takes its mission to create a safe, judgment-free place for all women seriously, and she has even dismissed team members who did not meet those expectations. “We make sure the women are always empowering one another,” Lee said, adding she has no tolerance for bad attitudes, gossip or derogatory comments. “And we have a culture now where that doesn’t exist, and that’s what
Dr. Universe
KIDS IN FOCUS SPONSORED BY: People, including healthcare workers, who wear these masks often do a fit test. For instance, in one test, a person puts on a mask and then puts on a suit with a plastic hood where they are asked to smell or taste things like bitter scents. If the mask fits well, they shouldn’t be able to taste or smell anything. That’s one way we can test if the mask is doing its job to block out tiny particles. Some masks made of cotton threads that are woven tightly together can also help bock droplets. Those criss-crossing threads that make up the fabric can help keep a virus from passing through the material. Since a virus
makes it really special.” While Lee started Boot Boogie Babes as a part time accompaniment to her primary job as a DJ, she shifted gears after being laid off because of COVID in 2020. “It was a blessing in disguise because I had been wanting to give 100 percent of my time to these women and the Boot Boogie Babes,” Lee said. Although her numbers went down because of the pandemic, Boot Boogie Babes has two chapters, the original Seattle chapter, with 45 members, and a franchise in Charleston, South Carolina with 20. In addition, she offers Boot Boogie Babe boot camps for everyone, even men, all over the Puget Sound, including in Kirkland, Kent, Port Orchard, Bremerton and Tacoma. She has also started a program where people can learn to become a lead dance instructor and teach their own line dancing boot camps under the DeAnna Lee Dance umbrella. “It’s my dream to have these Boot Boogie Babe camps all over the country and, ultimately, all over the world,” Lee said. To accommodate the different dance skills and allow women to flourish at their own pace, the Boot Boogie Babes is separated into different teams: the Boogie Babe premier performance team, the Boot Girls, for intermediate dancers, and the Boot Chicks, which is the beginners team. While all women will be placed on a team based on their skill level, everyone’s journey starts
will often enter the body through the nose and mouth, which are connected, it is important to cover them both. It takes not only the right material but also a proper fit to help a face mask do its job the best. Finally, it’s important to remember that while vaccine trials are still underway for children under 12, properly wearing a face mask, hand-washing and social distancing are the most effective tools we have to stay safe and healthy. Sincerely, Dr. Universe
with an audition. “It’s part of the transformation,” Lee said. Pre-COVID, the teams practiced once a week for an hour and a half at the Stroum Jewish Community Center on Mercer Island, with some women coming from as far as the Kitsap Peninsula to participate. Lee said she hopes they can begin doing that again when it is safe. They also perform at different events every summer, including concerts for different country artists, and they give community presentations, as well. Last month, they danced in front of Trader Joe’s in Queen Anne and at the Queen Anne Farmer’s Market, and they perform at the Fremont Fringe each month. “We’re just like a rolling party at a time when some people need some uplifting and some smiles,” Lee said. Next month, the Boot Boogie Babes is hosting and will perform at Bootstock, a country music festival to benefit Aaron Crawford and Dakota Poorman, two country singers who were hit hard financially by the coronavirus pandemic. The event will take place from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 25 Pell Parties Ranch, 28832 180th Ave. S.E., Kent. Remembering Jack Arends, former editor of the Queen Anne & Magnolia News By Mike Dillon
Special to the QA&Mag News
J
ack Arends, editor of the Queen Anne & Magnolia News from 1993-98, died July 18 at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett after a long illness. He was 64. Jack never married, but he had a vast network of friends reaching back decades. I was one of those. A tall, solid man, Jack was a world unto himself. And Jack’s world was never boring. I still remember the day he informed me he was leaving the News to go to work as a technical writer for Boeing. “You’re leaving the News for the belly of the Beast?” I asked. He smiled the bland smile of one holding nothing but aces: “There’s something about working half the hours at twice the pay that I just can’t resist.” “Really? So, you place the happiness of your creditors ahead of my own?” “Well, Mikey, now that you mention it.” Last Dec. 14, as one of this state’s 12 presidential electors, in failing health, Jack’s life reached the summit. His short speech in the Senate chambers in Olympia, after the votes for Joe Biden had
been recorded, went viral. Search “Jack Arends Dec. 14” and you’ll find multiple links to Jack Arends the video. Take a deep breath before watching. Jack wrote that speech on Interstate 5 somewhere south of Fort Lewis as we sped our way to Olympia. I rented a van for the trip. Jack sat in the middle seat. Behind Jack sat his good friend and guardian angel Clarence Moriwaki, who revived Jack after he collapsed from a heart attack in 2011. Jack’s wheelchair was wedged into the space behind Clarence. I assumed Jack had already prepared his words. And then I realized it was just like old times at the Queen Anne & Magnolia News, when I’d wander over to his messy desk and pointedly glance at my watch: “Thirty minutes to deadline, Jack.” “I’m almost there.” “What’s left to do?” “I’m just about to start on my
column.” Jack’s columns were invariably brilliant. He was born in the Olympia area in 1956. In 1972, his older brother Jens, while riding his bike, was struck by a car and died. Jack carried that silent wound through life; he understood suffering and the suffering of others. After earning his degree in communications from Washington State University in 1979, Jack landed his first big newspaper job in 1982 at the Memphis PressScimitar. He moved on to the Bellevue Journal-American, now the Bellevue Reporter, where he worked from 1984-89. After a stint as editor of the Port Orchard Independent, Jack came to the Queen Anne & Magnolia News, where his potent “pen” won numerous industry awards. Our modest office at 225 W. Galer St., since demolished for the Aegis Living block, was packed with assorted characters and talent. One of those was the late intrepid reporter Russ Zabel, whose wry police beat page had a cult following. Our bristly, gray office cat, Lumpy, often sprawled head-down over Russ’s shoulder in what Jack termed the “Lumpy Drape.” At any moment the redoubtable Linda Greenwald,
also known as Linda of London, might breeze through wearing one of her vintage hats to drop off her column, which she signed off with TTFN (ta-ta for now). Various people of all ages found their way to our door, wanting to get a start in the writing game. Some went on to do great things. The 1990s were the time of the Seattle Comprehensive Plan, a heated process that forged the urban-density template for the city’s neighborhoods. Queen Anne was massively affected. These days, anyone returning to the Hill after 15 years could be excused for feeling like Rip Van Winkle. Jack relished chronicling neighborhood history in the making. Entitlement and incivility were his special targets. In a July 19, 1995, editorial, Jack noted the Behring family, Seattle Seahawks owners from Southern California, demanded more money for the Kingdome, the Seahawks’ home field then. “The Behrings are almost beyond belief,” he wrote. “It’s bad enough that they are ham-fisted shakedown artists; what’s worse is they are incompetent business people.” Sound familiar? Here’s another straw in the wind from an Oct. 22, 1997, column, in which he wonders why
former U.S. Rep. and Lt. Gov. Joel Pritchard, who died earlier that month, was saluted for being “courteous,” instead of his many achievements. “I concluded it is because politics is increasingly nasty, all the time. At all levels.” Clearly, Jack’s Dec. 14 speech had deep roots. Of all the words Jack wrote in his newspaper career, none would be more powerful than those written on his laptop north of Olympia. After the electoral vote, sitting at his desk beneath his black Kango beret with “Play Nice” written on the brim, Jack spoke in a breaking voice to the hushed chamber. “I was told there is no more medical treatment that can help me, so it was important for me to do this one thing that I could do while I still can.” At the end, he choked out, “God bless our great nation,” before burying his face in his crossed arms on the desk. At that point, the official camera cut away. Jack wept on as the crowd applauded him. He wept not just for himself, but for something larger. Thank you, dear Jack. — Mike Dillon was publisher of the Queen Anne & Magnolia News from 1992-2013
