Leaders emerge in Seattle primary election Song Maritz, Rivera vying for District 4 school board position By Jessica Keller
QA&Mag News editor
While last week’s King County primary election results have yet to be finalized, the top two candidates have emerged in most Seattle races, including mayor,
City Council and Seattle Public Schools District 4 director. In Seattle’s crowded mayoral race with 15 candidates vying to replace outgoing Mayor Jennie Durkan, Bruce Harrell and M. Lorena Gonzalez emerged as the early frontrunners, and their leads
only grew as the week progressed. According to updated results posted Friday afternoon, Harrell is maintaining his lead over current City Councilmember Gonzalez by a little over 6,000 votes. As of Friday, Harrell had 60,474 votes to Gonzalez’s 54,310. Harrell and
Gonzalez’s slots on November’s general election are secured as none of the other candidates came close to picking up as many votes. In the at-large council positions, incumbent Teresa Mosqueda will advance to the general election in November. As

After a year off because of COVID-19, the car show returned to Magnolia over the weekend and saw steady visitors throughout the day who admired the cars on display and reconnected with old friends. Taste of Queen Anne returns this month following a new format, plan for future Fundraiser benefits Queen Anne Helpline QA&Mag News editor While it won’t be the same format as previous years, organizers hope the upcoming Taste of Queen Anne, which benefits Queen Anne Helpline, will help the organize continue its mission and serve as a playbook for future events.
This year, the Taste of Queen Anne will take place from noon to 8 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Crockett Street dining plaza off of Queen Anne Avenue North. MaChell Duma, Queen Anne Helpline marketing and communications manager, said that the Taste of Queen Anne has evolved from its previous gala structure to a less exclusive community event.
“This year, we wanted it to be really community-centric,” she said. Not only will this year’s event be less formal, it will also feature entertainment for the entire community, specifically children’s activities and treats from noon to 6 p.m. on First Avenue West, as well as a family street dance hosted by KEXP staff and vendors. “I really want to make the event more inclusive, and also we are responding to the pandemic,”

Duma said. Although in past years, the “tastes” provided were donated by the restaurants that participated, this year, Queen Anne Helpline is paying for all the tastes. Duma said restaurants have been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, and it would be asking too much for them to donate everything. “We just don’t expect that,” she said.

Starting at MacLean Park, volunteers have been reclaiming the trail and green spaces from years of illegal dumping and abandoned encampments.

As of Friday afternoon, Nelson had a slight lead over Oliver with 67,326 votes to Oliver’s 65,907. The school board director race for Seattle Public Schools District 4, which includes Magnolia, Queen Anne and Ballard in its boundaries, will see Magnolia resident Vivian Song Maritz and Queen Anne’s Laura Marie Rivera on the general election ballot. The finest peace of mind M y bicycle was stolen from the Denny Whole Foods parking garage recently, cut right off the back of my car. Though what I really want to say is a little more expressive: My best friend was abducted while I was shopping for half-price raspberries! When I first saw she was gone, I felt shaken. Disbelieving. Surprise! How could someone do something like that? The earth did not move. But it altered. I had the weirdest sensation that heat was softening the asphalt under my feet, making me sink deeper into my own steps. The first person I told was a beautiful (fashion-model beautiful) woman getting out of her car. When she pulled down her mask to say “yikes” more out of habit, it seemed, than compassion, I thanked her. Motions like that matter at times like this. “I did see a man walking around Belltown with bolt cutters strapped to his belt,” she said, her false eyelashes blinking like tiny black fans, which seemed right somehow, as if they waved off, in a natural unnatural way, anything more to say. Even in my despair, I envied her. It’s the kind of envy that can take me by surprise, a longing not so much for being a beautiful woman in her 20s, but surely more beautiful and definitely younger. It makes me feel wanting, almost lacking, when it happens. And my inner admonition is always the same: Stop it! Stop it right now! I stared at my empty bike rack, struggling in my state of contrasts: Tough, resilient woman vs. wanting to kneel down and cry like a newborn. What gets me is I hardly ever shop at Denny Whole Foods. That part of town is a nowhere land to me. I pulled in because my friend’s text read “SALE!” Five green berry baskets sat on her counter. Any excuse to post an image. South Lake Union once served
Mary Lou Sanelli Falling Awake as a catchment for logs on their way to be milled, but now I get the feeling it serves as a catchment for anyone needing to steal something quick — bicycles, cell phones — and head on back to wherever they can fence them. And since this has happened to me twice in the area, it can happen, in its own quick-as-a-flash way, to anyone. The first time, I was getting my hair cut in a salon on Westlake and in walks a man who scoops up an entire shelf of hair products and runs out. I heard my hairdresser say, “It’s not even worth calling the cops anymore.” Her anger was as familiar as my own. I knew I wouldn’t call the cops about my bicycle either. Though I should have, to get a case number anyway. We should all take advantage of the right to call the police. It’s like voting. If you go to websites and apps like Craigslist, eBay, OfferUp, you’ll see plenty of bikes for sale. And if you happen to see yours, you can contact police, and thank God, or whoever, if they rescue your bike. In the meantime, I will stop mourning my old bike, buy a new one, or new to me, as I’m a great fan of Recycled Cycles on Boat Street. Though, wait, where do they get their bicycles? Sheesh. So, I called the store and spoke to the manager, David. Taking
a phone call such as mine in a bicycle shop on a summer Seattle day is a good deed by anyone’s measures, but he is just the nicest, most positive guy. “We never pay cash for bikes,” he said. “That attracts the dark side. Nor do we except any bike that’s been spray painted. Only store credit or a trade-in. All serial numbers are run through the Bike Index. Anything that feels remotely shady, we say no thank you.” People get things stolen all the time, my husband points out, but in a soothing tone, like he is talking someone off a ledge, and I suppose he is. As the writer Michael Palin said, “One of the most important days of my life is when I learned to ride a bicycle.” I’ve always felt most like myself riding a bicycle. Learning to balance on two wheels was my first independence. I can still remember the exhilaration I felt peddling out of my neighborhood, past the concrete plant where my father worked, and into the next discovery down the road. Inhaling the sense of freedom, having lost all sense of myself, the world opened up to me. And once you get a sense of freedom, you want more, more, more. I just hope the person who stole my bike doesn’t leave her out in the rain. She hates that. Her chain gets rusty and her frame starts to corrode. So, thief ? Care for her. If you do, she will provide the finest peace of mind you will ever know. Mary Lou Sanelli, author, speaker and dance teacher, has been part of The Queen Anne & Magnolia News since 2009. Her novel, The Star Struck Dance Studio (of Yucca Springs), was released in 2019. Her newest collection of essays, Every Little Thing, is forthcoming in the fall of 2021. Giving blood is an important way of caring for each other and contributing to healthcare readiness.” Thus far, Seattle Opera has hosted three pop-up blood drives with Bloodworks Northwest. To date, 624 people donated blood, for an impact of up to 1,671 local patients helped in the Greater Seattle area.

How do lungs work to keep you alive?
Take a deep breath. As air travels through your nose and mouth into your lungs, it brings oxygen into the body. To find out exactly how it all works, I talked to my friend Kim Chiok, a researcher at Washington State University. In the lab at WSU, she designs experiments to help us learn about diseases that impact the lungs and other parts of the body that help us breathe. When you breathe in, little hairs in your nose help filter out particles like dust, so they don’t enter the body. The air warms up as it flows into a tube-like structure called the trachea. The trachea leads down to the bronchial tubes and into the pink, spongy lungs. Chiok said to explore how lungs work, we can also think about them as if they were made up of bubble wrap. “But imagine that the bubbles don’t pop. Instead, whenever you squeeze the bubbles, they deflate but then go back to their own shape,” she said. The air sacks in the lungs are like the individual bubbles in the bubble wrap. We call these air sacks alveoli and there can be hundreds of millions of these sacks in the lungs. The alveoli fill up with air and release air all day long. The air sacks are lined with lots of tiny, living things called cells. These cells may be small, but they have a big job to do. They help bring the oxygen into the blood, so the blood can transport it around the body. Oxygen in your blood can help do all kinds of things — repair cells, boost the immune system that helps protect you from getting sick, and even give you energy. Not only do the air sacks bring oxygen to the body, they also help release carbon dioxide, which is a kind of leftover from the work some
FUNDRAISER, FROM PAGE 1 Queen Anne Helpline is offering people different packages ranging in price point from which to choose for the event. A Taste for Two features 10 tastes and four drinks, while a general admission ticket will get the buyer four tastes and two drinks. Duma said people can also “volunteer their way in” to the Taste by helping with any number of things, including setting up and tearing down. People can sign up to volunteer at https://www.signupgenius. com/go/20f0c45aaa62ba2ff2-taste. Tastes are three to four bites, Duma said. Of the restaurants, three or four restaurants will offer appetizers, while 10 will have main dishes and two will feature dessert choices. “I think this is a great cross section of restaurants,” Duma said. People will also have a number of food options from which to choose, including pescatarian, vegetarian and gluten free items. “We’ve tried to have a little bit of everything for everyone,” Duma said. In previous years, the Taste of Queen Anne has raised over $200,000 for the Helpline. While Duma said this year’s event is not expected to raise that much, this is the Helpline’s primary fundraiser for the year, and the funds raised are greatly needed because the organization has been doing all it can to help people pay their rent and utilities during the past 18 months. Queen Anne Helpline is currently open by appointment, but Duma said it should reopen in the fall. “We are giving more aid than we ever have monetarily, and the amount of clients is higher than we’ve ever had,” Duma said. “We need this event to succeed to keep doing what we do,” she added.
Dr. Universe
KIDS IN FOCUS SPONSORED BY: of your cells do. When you get the flu or have other respiratory problems, it can sometimes make it hard to breathe. That’s because the alveoli lining becomes thick when fluid and inflammatory cells build up in the thin layer of tissue. The alveoli then have a hard time collapsing and expanding. This also happens when smoke from wildfires or from smoking cigarettes fills up the lungs. While smoke can make it hard to breathe, it can also kill lung cells. Lung cells can repair themselves, but it takes
a long time for them to get back to normal. In some cases, the cells never fully recover. Chiok said it’s as if the bubbles in our imaginary bubble wrap, those alveoli, get destroyed. That’s also why it is really important to protect ourselves from smoke and other small particles that might make it hard for the lungs to do their job. When we keep our lungs healthy, it allows life-giving oxygen to flow into our bodies and carbon dioxide to flow out, so we can all live our best lives. Sincerely, Dr. Universe

Local gardeners re-dedicate UpGarden By Jessica Keller
QA&Mag News editor Gardeners in Uptown celebrated the completion of the refinished UpGarden on top of the Mercer Street Garage Thursday with a cake, a potluck dinner and comments from city officials. The celebration marks the end of a major restoration project completed by UpGarden volunteers and funded through a Department of Neighborhoods grant. “It’s beautiful right now. Everything is in full bloom and in full flower,” Bob Grubbs, the UpGarden restoration project manager, said about the garden. Grubbs said he and other volunteers moved about 47 tons of soil during the restoration process, which required moving growing beds, building new walls and reinstalling the irrigation system to meet Seattle Center guidelines. Most of the work is complete, although Grubbs said he is still waiting to receive permitting to install a gazebo and three pergolas. Grubbs said he would like to add another bike rack and possibly some benches, as well. “The important thing is the garden is back in business,” Grubbs said. “All the plots are in use, and we have maybe 34 new gardeners this year.” Prior to the restoration project,
Photo courtesy Bob Grubbs UpGarden members Lucas Rickerson, from center left, Jon Vlaskamp and his partner, Wallace, listen to speeches during the UpGarden rededication celebration Thursday at the community garden. The garden is in full bloom and at capacity after volunteers finished a restoration project this spring to make necessary structural improvements to the area. the UpGarden had 99 plots, but with the reconfiguration of the garden, it now has 86. While the volunteers did the lion’s share of the work, Grubbs
said District 7 City Councilmember Andrew Lewis was instrumental in the UpGarden staying open. In 2019, the Uptown garden,
the only one on top of a parking garage, was slated to be shuttered and returned back to parking spaces. Uptown gardeners approached Lewis when he was still
campaigning for City Council and asked him to advocate for the UpGarden’s existence. “If it had not been for him intervening on our behalf, we would not have been able to reconstruct the garden,” Grubbs said. Lewis said he was happy he could broker an arrangement so the garden could stay open, resuming the area was restored to Seattle Center specifications. “It is more than just a garden,” Lewis said, adding UpGarden is a place for community, and losing it would have been detrimental. “You don’t just displace the garden plots. You displace a whole bunch of people, too.” Grubbs agrees the UpGarden and other gardens like it are necessary for Seattle. The community gardens, he said, are more than just growing food and flowers. When people get involved, they are “actively engaging in something that is fulfilling and nurturing and builds community, which is really what this is.” “This is the sort of thing that the city should be investing in more,” Grubbs said. “We hope there will be the political will from the city to continue to support these types of programs and expand them as much they can. “Seattle is built out, and we need to preserve open spaces like this, and I’d like to see a lot more of that happen,” Grubbs added.
