Queen Anne Days back next month Chamber needs volunteers, donations for the festival By Jessica Keller

QA&Mag News editor

After having to cancel Queen Anne Days in 2020 because of COVID-19, the Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce members are excited the popular event will return with a modified format

Sept. 10 and Sept. 11 at Big Howe Field on top of Queen Anne. Queen Anne Chamber Executive Director Charley Shore said, not only is the 2021 event later in the year than usual, it will feature events and activities that will follow all social distancing and mask

guidelines. There will not be any indoor activities this year. “Well, we’re trying to keep it as similar as we can,” Shore said. “Our biggest focus is that it’s community oriented.” On Friday night, the beer, wine and cider garden for residents 21 and over will be open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and it will feature tribute music of Phil Collins, Invisible Touch and STYX Borrowed Time. Saturday’s festival begins with the Kids ’N’ K-9’s Parade, spon-

sored by Wag ’N’ Wash. Participants will line up at 12:15 p.m. in front of the Queen Anne Community Center. The grand marshal this year is “Elvis,” who will lead the parade along the perimeter of Big Howe Field. The entourage will finish on stage to receive awards in the different categories. There will also be an aikido demonstration, and the Boot Boogie Babes, a line-dancing troupe started by Queen Anne resident

Local couple opens hybrid plant, tattoo shop across from MarQueen Hotel By Jessica Keller

QA&Mag News editor While plant shops and tattoo parlors are scattered throughout Seattle, only Uptown has a hybrid plant and tattoo shop. Aleisha Tilson and her boyfriend, Joseph McSween, opened Nightshade, 615 Queen Anne Ave. N. in Uptown, across from the MarQueen Hotel, in March. “There’s a lot of plant shops and a lot of tattoo shops, so we wanted to be unique,” McSween said. Tilson runs the plant end of the shop, while McSween set up his tattoo shop operations at the back of the business. Tilson admits, however, opening a new business during a pandemic had an element of risk. “It was a little stressful but a little exciting, too,” she said. Tilson has sold plants online since 2019, and McSween has been tattooing for six years after working most of his career as an oil painter. “I kind of mastered oil painting, and I was just challenged by tattoos,” McSween said. “Just staying dedicated and focused has helped me a lot, I feel like.” Tilson said when they first met, McSween was doing tattoo pop-ups at different plant shops, including the one Tilson worked at part time. “And we saw how excited it got people, so we wanted to open one of our own,” she said. McSween said, with Nightshade, they now

BUSINESS, FROM PAGE 1

Tilson said she specializes in common and collector houseplants. She will offer some outdoor plants at the beginning of growing season and some herbs, as well as vegetable starts by request. If she does not have a plant people are looking for, Tilson will order it for customers. Tilson said she orders most of her plants from Washington state and some from California and Oregon. “I try not to go too far out of the way,” she said. “I try to stay local to the West Coast.” Tilson said she tries to feature other local artists in her shop, including hand-made pottery from a local indigenous artist and other trinkets made by another person who creates preserved plant displays. “We like to do a lot of little collaborations with artists in the community,” Tilson said. Since opening, Tilson said business has picked up at the shop, especially with the reopening of restaurants and other businesses in the community. It was definitely a risk,” Tilson said of opening during a pandemic. “It was a little stressful but a little exciting, too.” Tilson and McSween said, when they first considered opening a store front, they wanted to open in Uptown because they live in the neighborhood. “I don’t know, we just love our

neighborhood,” Tilson said. They also benefited from the lower rental rates being offered in the neighborhood because property management companies are eager to fill empty storefronts, which made it easier for them to realize their dream. Since opening, Tilson said the community has welcomed their store. “Getting to know all the local businesses has helped,” Tilson said. “Everyone has been so great in helping us to promote,” McSween added. McSween also mentioned that he told one of his clients who came in to get a tattoo about the empty storefronts and the deals being offered to potential renters, and she opened up a salon next door. “So, we’re kind of trying to revitalize the neighborhood a little bit,” McSween said. Nightshade plant shop is open from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, although Tilson suggests people check social media, including Facebook and Instagram, to see if the store is open. People can also visit www. nightshadeplant.com for more information. McSween operates his tattoo shop by appointment only. People can fill out an appointment form at https://nightshadeplant.com/nightshade-tattoo.

have the opportunity to spend more time together and pursue their own interests. He said he likes how he can offer clients a more intimate space than they might have at another shop, and the plants in the front section create a soothing atmosphere. “Just being around nature, you know, is calming,” McSween said. While he painted in color, McSween specializes in black and gray tattoos by choice because he is color blind. He said he tattoos in any subject style, however, and does a lot of botanical work. McSween said all of his tattoos are created specifically for the client, and he does not reproduce subject matter from a book. Tilson said her career of selling plants started with a love she developed growing up. “I’ve kind of always been into plants,” she said. Tilson said her a grandmother was a Master Gardener, and her family planted and raised a garden every year. “We immersed ourselves in nature, and I found I’ve been my best self in nature,” Tilson said, adding raising and taking care of plants has helped her deal with anxiety and depression. As well, when she began working part time at a plant store, she realized she knew a lot more than she initially thought she did.

How do we clone things?

From frogs to sheep to cats, humans have learned to clone all kinds of organisms. Like you, I was curious how it all works, so I talked to my friend Jon Oatley, a researcher at Washington State University. First, he told me that mammals — like you and me — are made up of billions of building blocks called cells. Other organisms, like amoebas, are just a single cell. Inside each cell is a nucleus, which is like a small envelope that protects something very important: DNA. DNA holds the code to all sorts of different traits, such as hair color, eye color and skin color. This genetic information can be passed down from grandparents to parents to their offspring. One type of reproduction requires both the DNA from inside a sperm cell and inside an egg cell for an organism to start developing. When these two cells come together, they form a single cell and then start multiplying. These cells make up an embryo, the earliest stage of development. But when we want to clone something, we don’t need DNA from both a sperm cell and an egg cell. Instead, the DNA comes from a single non-reproductive cell, called a somatic cell. It might be a cell from muscle, brain, or even skin. Scientists can pull out DNA from inside one of those cells and put it into the empty shell of organism’s egg cell. With a zap of electricity, the cells start multiplying and form an embryo. After the embryo stage comes the fetus stage, and then finally the offspring. The offspring, or clone, will have the same DNA as the original organism. “We can do this in essentially all mammals,”

Dr. Universe

KIDS IN FOCUS SPONSORED BY: Oatley said. Even though the DNA is identical, that doesn’t mean a clone will be a perfect carbon copy of the original, he adds. For instance, the first cat clone had the same DNA as her donor cat Rainbow. Rainbow was a calico cat with orange, black and white fur. But Cc, the clone, was grey and white. A clone may look different than its donor because some traits occur randomly as the clone develops in the womb. The environment where a clone lives can also make the clone look or behave differently than its donor, too. Cloning is a tool scientists can use in the lab to help us better understand genetics. It can

help us identify genes and improve the traits of different food products, which is especially important for feeding Earth’s growing population. Cloning also helps us gain a better understanding of how genes work and when those genes might be the source of health problems. Oatley said it’s great to hear that you are already curious about the world of life sciences, Raphael. Who knows, maybe one day you can help us learn more about the way genes work and how DNA shapes life on our planet. Sincerely, Dr. Universe

District hosting virtual town hall on health, safety protocols on Aug. 24

Seattle Public Schools is hosting a virtual town hall meeting on health and safety protocols as the school district prepares to return to full-time, in-person learning this fall.

The event will take place at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 24 via Teams Live and will be streamed to Facebook, YouTube and SPSTV. According to an announcement from Carrie Nicholson, director of student support services, one strategy the district is using to keep students safe when they

When my blue potatoes come in, it will be quite the party. Some ways to easily extend your harvest: • Plant another crop of cool-season veggies if you have leftover seeds or saved seeds from your openpollinated (non-hybrid) varieties and there is time based on the variety’s “Days to Maturity.” • Buy starts of cool-season vegetables, checking those tags so you know how and when to plant and harvest.

• Forgo a crop but boost next year’s garden by planting cover crops now that will feed the soil next spring. Fava beans and Austrian clover are two great choices. These help fix nutrients like nitrogen in the soil that may be depleted from past seasons’ growing. The fava beans have gorgeous white and purple flowers in early spring, followed by the edible beans. Then you cut down and dig in the remains to compost in your soil before planting your next crops. • Sow seeds of microgreens inside. These are sprouts of a lot of the same crops mentioned above, from greens to beets, brassicas and peas, but also sunflowers, the shoots of which are all concentrated with nutrients. Easy to grow in shallow trays, they’re ready to top your salad, soups or smoothies in a few weeks.

Next Community Engagement Initiative presentation focuses on communication, misinformation

QAMag News File photo Not only will ‘Elvis’ perform as one of the Queen Anne Days’ musical acts on Sept. 11, he will also be the grand marshal of the Kids ’N’ K-9’s Parade, which this year will travel along the perimeter of Big Howe Field. FESTIVAL, FROM PAGE 1 DeAnna Lee, will perform. Children’s activities will include gunny sack races with parents and children, bubble blowing, coloring, basketball Frisbee and other events that can be done safely. For example, Shore said, there will be face painting, but parents will use kits with the paint to decorate their children’s faces. Musical entertainment on Saturday includes the Elvis impersonator; the Seachordsmen;

Wings and Things, a tribute to Paul McCartney; and the night will end with Stonsey, a tribute to the Rolling Stones. Local businesses owners will also have booths to meet with the community, Shore said. She also anticipated businesses will host a sidewalk sale on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, Eric Berge, who owns Werner’s Crash Shop in lower Queen Anne, will be hosting a car show to top off the day. “We’re trying to keep it as open

and fun as possible, with the idea that we still have to be aware of safety measures,” Shore said. There will also be sanitation and water stations. She said volunteers are needed because “it’s a job to get everything set up and to get everything going.” Donations are also welcome to support Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce activities, Shore said.
