Rivera is running for the District 4 position against Vivian Song Maritz. Rivera said she was inspired to run for School Board director in District 4, which includes Queen Anne, Magnolia and some of Ballard, after previous director Eden Mack resigned at the beginning of this year. "A quality education is the best thing we can provide children," Rivera said. She said Mack's resignation got her thinking about Seattle Public Schools and saw opportunity. "We've got 50,000 students in Seattle Public Schools, and we've got 50,000 futures that we've got to think about." She said the school district not only has the ability to teach students, it has the chance to expose them to other educational opportunities post high school, such as trade apprenticeships for students who may not be interested in attending traditional college after graduation. "We need to make sure we're creating these opportunities," she said, adding she would advocate for this as a board member. "That is what my idea is: unlocking opportunities for the future." Rivera said she would like to see the school district "open doors" to create more opportunities for students, whether it is through advanced level classes or introduction to careers that don't follow traditional paths, with a focus on equity and opportunity for all students. She said she would like new
policies or partnerships created in the community to support those objectives because Seattle is an amazing city with opportunities in a range of career fields. She said it is also important for the school district to introduce educational opportunities and programs to students much earlier than high school. As well, Rivera said the school district needs to create a transportation plan that emphasizes equity to all students and gives them access to programs to supports their needs and interests. Rivera also supports creating educational opportunities that go beyond just the traditional means because some students learn better outside of a classroom setting. Rivera said she recognizes the district does not have unlimited funds, but her past work experience will be an asset on the School Board because working in education and nonprofits teaching the arts requires "being creative with what you have" and creating and maintaining opportunities and programs with limited funds. According to her background information, Rivera has a masters degree in education from Bank Street College of Education in New York City and has taught in multiple disciplines, from kindergarten to school programs at an urban museum, to public and private sector arts education for children and adults. She is the current secretary for the Coe Elementary PTA and serves as the local Reflections Art chair and coordinator for the National PTA Arts Competition, according to her website. One thing Rivera said she
wants to bring as a School Board is greater transparency and communication, which she said has been lacking, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. "It's difficult for families to see and understand what's going on at the district level," she said. Rivera said, if she is elected, she will work toward removing barriers for families and advocates to be heard at board and committee meetings and wants to change how the district creates advisory groups and task forces to make sure that community members are being reached in their spaces. She also said she will use her experience as a parent and educator to advocate for all students. "I am very good at speaking my piece and following through and advocating for my children and for a group," Rivera said, adding, if elected she would listen to parents' ideas and concerns by meeting with residents in their communities and report them back to the School Board. She said she also knows how to agree to disagree with other people and set aside differences to move on if a decision is made that she doesn't agree with fully. Rivera said even if her ideas and thoughts don't result in immediate action, just sharing them is a form of progress. "My feeling is that, at least with a different voice in the room, you're voicing your ideas and planting a seed," she said. "Things may not change today, and they may not change tomorrow, but you are planting a seed." For more information about Rivera, go to lauramarie4seattleschools.com.

Why does sleep feel so short?
That’s a great observation. When my friend Ashley Ingiosi was a kid, she remembers how napping in the car during a four-hour drive to her grandparents’ house seemed to make the time fly by. Maybe you’ve had a similar experience. As a researcher at Washington State University, Ingiosi is really curious about what goes on within the human brain during sleep. She was happy to help with your question. “Sometimes sleep feels so short because we become less aware of our surroundings,” she said. As you go about your day, you rely on certain signals from your senses — or stimuli — to know if you are awake and aware. This awareness is what sleep scientists call consciousness. But when you are sleeping, you don’t really sense the world in the same way. You can’t use your sense of touch to feel your bedsheets. You often can’t use your sense of hearing to pick up on the sounds around you. You might not feel it, but during certain stages of sleep, your eyes are darting around under your eyelids. Even though you have a lower level of awareness, your brain and body are still very active. “Brains are still very busy during sleep and doing a lot of different things,” Ingiosi said. “But the reason why we can stay asleep is that we are less aware of what’s going on around us.” When you are awake and aware, you can use clues from your environment to sense all kinds of things, including how time is passing. But when you sleep, it makes it harder to track all those seconds, minutes and hours ticking by. “If we were aware of things in the way that we are when we are awake, we’d have a really

As children and teenagers grow up, they need to sleep even longer than adults need to sleep. According to our friends at the National Institutes of Health, school-age children and teenagers need about nine hours of sleep each day. After the teenage years, you can do with a little less sleep. Most adults need about seven to eight hours of sleep each day. While scientists are still unraveling many of the mysteries around how and why humans sleep, we do know sleep gives the body and mind a chance to recharge. It helps you stay
healthy. Sleep can also help strengthen the memories that you form throughout the day. It helps keep your brain working well, so you can do everything from finishing your homework to playing sports to asking big questions about our world. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll be a scientist who helps us understand more about the fascinating experience of sleep. As for me, after investigating this great science question, I think it’s prime time for a cat nap. Sincerely, Dr. Universe

Madrona author releases third book in cozy mystery series “The Fog Ladies: In The Soup,” the third installment in Seattle author and award-winning novelist Susan McCormick’s Fog Ladies cozy murder mystery series, was released Oct. 4 by The Wild Rose Press, 326 pages, $17.99. “Stressed young doctor-intraining Sarah James and the spunky, elderly Fog Ladies stumble into another murder when they volunteer at a San Francisco soup kitchen,” according to the press release. “They en-
MARITZ, FROM PAGE 1 Maritz, a mother of four whose family lives in Capitol Hill, is renting an apartment in Ballard after briefly living in Queen Anne, and admits she moved to District 4 rather than wait for the seat in District 3 to come up for election. “I really want to serve my community at this moment,” Maritz, who said. Maritz is facing Queen Anne’s Laura Marie Rivera in the Nov. 2 general election for the seat that is currently held by Erin Dury, who is serving the remainder of Eden Mack’s term. Maritz said she had two reasons for running for School Board at this time. The first is because Seattle Public Schools is experiencing a challenging year on many fronts, not least of which is that it is underfunded, she said. “And I felt we needed more leadership from a financial perspective,” Maritz said. Maritz has a master’s degree from Harvard Business School and more than 15 years in finance and management in the private sector, including working for Goldman Sachs. She is currently a member

Sarju said, if elected, she will advocate and consider what is best for all students when helping set policy. “When it comes to children, this is not about politics,” she said. “This is about developing kids and having them grow in to happy, healthy, productive adults.” Sarju said, if she is elected, she wants to know how the current

According to Harder’s voter’s pamphlet statement released in the primary election, “the premise of Critical Race Theory and ‘antiracism’ is that all social disparity is the result of systemic racism, and that group identity, not individual character, is the core of who you are. It teaches students to hate each other, their country and, if they happen to be white, themselves.” One of his main objectives, he

Then a celebrity chef ends up dead in the soup, the director is arrested and the soup kitchen is doomed. “The suspect list is long, including the soup kitchen director with a ruined life, the frumpy ex-wife jilted for a beautiful model, a land developer with an acrimonious past with the chef, and a disrespected soup kitchen guest who bit off a man’s ear," the press release continued.
of the Superintendent's Parent Advisory Council. Maritz said her biggest concern is making sure the district has a financial plan in place to support its goals and that money is being spent "impactfully." She said it is the board’s duty to understand what is happening in the district and how the money is being allocated. If elected, she said she'll specifically looking at where the investments are to support the goals in the strategic plan. She said the district has pledged to have all students reading at grade level by the third grade because many studies have shown that year is crucial in determining future success in school and beyond. “It’s a very worthy goal for our district to have,” Maritz said. “I don’t see an express financial commitment to achieving that goal.” Maritz said the school district could be facing a big challenge this year because decreases in enrollment will mean less money coming from the state. Depending on how much less money the district will receive could result in a number of cuts. “My hope is that we prioritize funding so that the last things that are cut are the

things that directly impact the classroom,” Maritz said. Special education funding is also not to where it needs to be. This is an issue dear to Maritz because she is hearing impaired and wears hearing aids. She said SPS is the largest district in the state, but the Legislature has a put a cap on spending for special education services that does not address the need in Seattle schools. Maritz said the second reason she is running for School Board is the lack of Asian representation on the board or in senior leadership positions. Maritz, who is of Chinese descent, said she was bullied as a student growing up in Ohio, and the rise in anti-Asian sentiment in this country and violence concerns her. “I don’t think any child should go to school and feel unsafe and unwelcome,” she said, adding that at the height of the coronavirus pandemic she did not feel comfortable speaking to her children in Mandarin. She said she saw other Asian students in the district were feeling unsafe, as well. “I see that our students were feeling unsafe and really felt I could bring that representation to our district,” Maritz said.
before retiring last year. In addition to the Fog Ladies series, she also wrote “Granny Can’t Remember Me,” a lighthearted picture book about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, and “The Antidote,” a middle grade and up medical/STEM fantasy. She lives in Madrona with her husband and two sons. Visit Susan McCormick online at www.https://susanmccormickbooks.com.
“I think [physical] isolation and restraint is a very serious issue that the district is grappling with,” Maritz said. For all the challenges, Maritz said the school district has a lot of positive things going for it. “I don’t come into this thinking that the school district is a disaster,” she said. As a member of the Superintendent’s Council, Maritz said she sees that the district has good schools and teachers and she agrees with the School Board’s focus on achieving greater equity. “We know what we need to do,” she said, adding she is serious about bringing racial justice to the district. Maritz also wants the School Board to set reasonable goals when hiring its new superintendent. “I think that this magical unicorn doesn’t quite exist,” she said. The new superintendent will have both strengths and weaknesses, and Maritz said the board needs to ensure that the new person has the tools in place to play up their strengths and support the areas in which they are weaker. systems and policies in place in the district are working for the children and their families in the district, while ensuring that teachers have the classroom support and tools they need to be successful. “I believe every child should have access to a high-quality public school education,” Sarju said, adding access to programs should not be impacted by race, zip code, socioeconomic status, different abilities or language a student speaks. Sarju said one of the strengths she will bring to the board if elected is her background in social work. “I understand the social, emo-
tional and mental health needs of children,” Sarju said. “That’s my skill. That’s my super power I’ll be bringing to the board.” She expects her experience developing and administering health programs for the county will serve her well because she regularly makes decisions keeping all children in mind, not just the ones the programs specifically serve. “For me it’s not a lens,” Sarju said of equity. “It’s everything I do. ... We can no longer have equity be in its own silo.” Sarju also welcomes participating in hiring a new superintendent. She said she has seen seven new superintendents get hired to the district in the last 34 years and
feels the revolving door needs to shut. “We need to be clear about what we want and not settle for less,” Sarju said. She wants the new superintendent to not only have leadership skills, she wants this person to make children’s well being, including long-term mental health, a focus, and develop a transportation plan that is sustainable and equitable. “The kids who need to be prioritized are over and over again not being prioritized,” Sarju said. She also wants the superintendent to be actively engage with community members and vows to do that as a School Board mem-
ber if elected. Sarju said she already has some experience with that as former School Board District 5 Director Mary Bass is a friend of hers, and she learned a lot about what goes on behind the scenes by helping Bass with administrative tasks, specifically setting up and running meetings between Bass and parents. She also wants to ensure parents are informed about the decisions the district and board members make, especially when it comes to COVID-19. “COVID is still our No. 1 priority,” she said. said, if he is elected to School Board would be to remove CRT from Seattle Public Schools curriculum and “prioritize academic excellence” over activism. Harder is also concerned about reports during lockdown of homeless encampments being situated on Broadview Thompson K-3 school grounds. He said, first, tents were set up on park grounds next to the school, but when the School Board didn’t require the city to remove the encampments, the homeless residents moved to school property, which is a safety concern. He said it is the city’s duty to clear out encampments and
provide services to the homeless, whereas the district’s concern is with student safety. “When I am director I will advocate for a policy that requires the immediate removal of any folks who are camping on school property,” Harder said. “That is completely inappropriate.” Harder admits if he is elected to the School Board he will have a lot to learn. His only foray into government or politics in the past was an unsuccessful bid for Washington state Senate against Sen. Jamie Peterson. “I tend too run long-odd campaigns, but so be it,” Harder said. Harder said his vision for
Seattle Public Schools is to value students individually, value them equally without stereotyping, ensuring their safety and “seeking and expecting excellence from every student.” Harder said, while he does not have any experience in education, nor does he have children, he would provide a different voice on the board, something he said is missing. “I would bring a new voice,” he said, adding he would be an advocate for parents who are disappointed with what the district has been doing academically or with its other policies. “I would be a voice for parents that want to see change. They have been missing a
clear voice for change.” Harder said, if elected, he would like to understand better how the district is spending its money. He said he is concerned that the funding breakdown comes out to be approximately $20,000 per student, which he said “is an incredible amount of money.” “I understand there’s different colors of money, but I think we can re-prioritize a little bit,” Harder said, adding he thinks the district has plenty of resources monetarily, but they just need to be applied better.
