Girl Scouts, Magnolia church hosting bake sale this Sunday By Jessica Keller
QA&Mag News editor Magnolia Girls Scouts and the Magnolia Lutheran Church are partnering together to host a bake sale to raise money for organizations helping the country of Ukraine. The Bake for Ukraine bake sale will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church’s Luther Hall, 2414 31st Ave. W. in Magnolia. Prices for baked goods
will not be fixed, but visitors are encouraged to leave a generous donation for the baked goods. Togo boxes will be set out for people who wish to support the effort but choose not to stay for coffee and conversation. Magnolia Girl Scout leader Holly Bieniawski, who works with the eighth graders, said she was touched by the plight of the Ukrainians following the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops at the orders of Russian President
Vladmir Putin and wanted to do something to help, especially after watching videos posted on social media of the destruction and suffering in Ukraine. “You can’t help but be moved in some ways,” Bienawski said. After approaching a friend at the Lutheran church about borrowing the space for a bake sale, Bieniawski said they decided to partner and turn it into a bake sale and coffee hour. “We just want people to take some time, spend some time together and enjoy each other’s company, and I’m just hoping people will feel compelled to leave a donation,” she said.
Bieniawski said 100 percent of the money raised will go to the World Central Kitchen, where celebrity chef Jose Andres and volunteers cook and distribute meals to people in Ukraine its borders, and Lutheran World Relief organization with humanitarian efforts centering around short- and long-term needs in Ukraine. “I wanted to have the two charities that we picked reflect the nature of our collaboration,” she said. Baniewski is currently accepting baked goods donated for the sale. Email her at holly.bieniawski@ gmail.com to get involved.
