Girl Scouts, Magnolia church hosting bake sale this Sunday By Jessica Keller
QA&Mag News editor Magnolia Girls Scouts and the Magnolia Lutheran Church are partnering together to host a bake sale to raise money for organizations helping the country of Ukraine. The Bake for Ukraine bake sale will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church’s Luther Hall, 2414 31st Ave. W. in Magnolia. Prices for baked goods
will not be fixed, but visitors are encouraged to leave a generous donation for the baked goods. Togo boxes will be set out for people who wish to support the effort but choose not to stay for coffee and conversation. Magnolia Girl Scout leader Holly Bieniawski, who works with the eighth graders, said she was touched by the plight of the Ukrainians following the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops at the orders of Russian President
Vladmir Putin and wanted to do something to help, especially after watching videos posted on social media of the destruction and suffering in Ukraine. “You can’t help but be moved in some ways,” Bienawski said. After approaching a friend at the Lutheran church about borrowing the space for a bake sale, Bieniawski said they decided to partner and turn it into a bake sale and coffee hour. “We just want people to take some time, spend some time together and enjoy each other’s company, and I’m just hoping people will feel compelled to leave a donation,” she said.
Bieniawski said 100 percent of the money raised will go to the World Central Kitchen, where celebrity chef Jose Andres and volunteers cook and distribute meals to people in Ukraine its borders, and Lutheran World Relief organization with humanitarian efforts centering around short- and long-term needs in Ukraine. “I wanted to have the two charities that we picked reflect the nature of our collaboration,” she said. Baniewski is currently accepting baked goods donated for the sale. Email her at holly.bieniawski@ gmail.com to get involved.

Police vehicle pursuit bill sputters out By Spencer Pauley The Center Square
A bill that would have eased some restrictions imposed last year on police vehicle pursuits did not receive a final vote on the last day of the legislative session, despite three attempts by Republicans to bring it to the Senate floor. The House passed Senate Bill 5919 on March 4. The Senate needed to concur with amendments made by the House in order for the legislation to have advanced to Gov. Jay Inslee’s desk. Sen. Andy Billig, D-Spokane, one of several Democrats who supported the legislation when it was previously in the Senate, explained why Democrats did not take up the bill. “We did not have the votes to bring it to the floor,” he said during a just-before-midnight press conference on Thursday following the end of Senate floor debate. “We did not have that level of support.” On Feb. 9, the Senate voted 3118 to pass a version of Engrossed Senate Bill 5919, so called to indicate the legislation had one or more amendments incorporated into it. Billig attributed the failure to pass SB 5919 in context, noting the Legislature did pass bills this
session tweaking last year’s police reform laws, including House Bill 1719 and House Bill 1735, both of which Inslee signed on March 4. HB 1719 clarified that police officers are still allowed to use non-lethal weapons such as bean bags and rubber bullets after legislation passed last year causing uncertainty as to whether police could still use such ammunition. HB 1735 makes clear the legislature never intended to stop police from using force in community caretaking situations. Per the law, officers can use force to execute search warrants and to take minors into protective custody. Reasonable care and appropriate de-escalation tactics must still be exercised before using force. Billig pointed to other legislation that also passed this year’s session, including a bill that bans the manufacture, sale or distribution of gun magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, as well as a bill designed to crack down on catalytic converter thefts by adding new requirements for scrap metal dealers who purchase catalytic converters and the creation of a catalytic converter theft workgroup at Washington State University. Sen. Manka Dhingra, D-Redmond, took a more circumspect
view of legislation to tweak police reform laws from last year. “Why is it that certain law enforcement agencies were able to do their job under the changes that were passed and others were not?” she asked. “And we really need to dig deep into that question and understand where the answers lie.” Dhingra, who did not vote for SB 5919 during its first run through the Senate, noted that deaths at the hands of law enforcement officers are down, which she called progress, before moving on to address the general rise in crime. “We did not see a rise in crime all across,” she said. “What we saw was a rise in domestic violence. We saw a rise in homicides that were related to domestic violence.” Details matter, she said, when it comes to law enforcement policy. “I have seen law enforcement do their job right,” Dhingra said. “I’ve seen it over and over again. And we simply have to make sure that those good officers are showing up, doing their job in a way we know it can be done.” Looking to next year’s legislative session, she said, “So, I’m sure there’ll be bills. It really behooves us to dig deep into it and really understand the issues instead of coming and reacting from fear.”

Seattle teachers union, some students oppose ending mask requirements By Spencer Pauley The Center Square
Seattle Public Schools are receiving pushback after announcing the end of the mask mandate on Monday, March 14. The lifted mask mandate is one of the first orders under Dr. Brent Jones, who the school board selected as their new superintendent on March 4. He had been serving as the interim superintendent since May 2021. Jones put out a statement on March 9 regarding lifting the mask mandate. It said that while masks will become optional, additional layers of mitigation will remain in place. These layers include available masks for students and employees who want to continue masking, physical distancing to the greatest extent possible, vaccine and booster access at SPS clinics, and air quality testing. The Seattle Education Association President Jennifer Matter and Bargaining Chair Uti Hawkins put out a statement that lifting the mask mandate has shaken their trust in SPS. “We are deeply disappointed by Seattle Public Schools’ masking announcement (on March 9) which is completely contrary to its prior statements and commitments to its educators and the community,” Matter and Hawkins said. They further said that Jones will need to do better to improve relations with SEA. “SEA was making progress in our relationship (with Jones) but we now have serious concerns about his leadership,” Matter and Hawkins said. “This does not bode well for future negotiations.” Matter and Hawkins also noted that they had scheduled to bargain over the mask mandate on March 11, two days after Jones
Photo by Alexandra Koch via Pixabay While students and staff are no longer required to wear masks in Seattle schools, some are unhappy SPS eased restrictions. made the decision to lift the mandate. The decision to lift the mandate has lead to some outrage from students as well. Luciana Lovik, a sophomore at Lincoln High School and Quincy Bash, a sophomore at Nathan Hale High School, are members of the Seattle Student Union. They were surprised the decision to lift the mandate was made so suddenly. “I was not expecting (SPS) to lift it, especially how recently we had that big spike two months ago,” Lovik said. Bash was under the impression that SPS would not lift the mask mandate. “Not only are they going against what seems like what most students want, but also going against what the majority of their employees want,” Bash said. Some students at Lincoln High School and Nathan Hale High
School were wearing their masks improperly but Bash said teachers were going out of their way to ensure students feel safe from COVID-19. “In the wake of this news, I’ve had teachers offer to give students their KN95 Masks to try and help them feel more comfortable,” Bash said. “Staff shouldn’t be expected to buy masks out of their own pocket.” The Student Union put out in a statement on March 8 threatening a student walk-out. Lovik and Bash say that one is planned for March 21 throughout all Seattle Public Schools. Lovik says that they will be trying to coordinate with the Seattle teachers union to do a sick-out on March 21, as well. The two students say they will both continue to wear their masks in school after the mandate is lifted.

Why do numbers never end? That’s a great observation about numbers. Whether you start counting backwards or forwards, numbers never seem to end. To find out more about these mysterious numbers, I took your question to my friend Kevin Fiedler. He’s an assistant professor of mathematics at Washington State University. He reminded me that there are a lot of different rules mathematicians follow. For instance, if you think of a number, you could always add one to it. Think of the highest number you can. Maybe you can even write it down on a piece of paper. Now, add one to it. Try it again and again. Perhaps the simplest answer to your question is you can always add one to a number. Fiedler reminded me that some numbers are whole numbers, such as 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. But there are also numbers like 1.33333…, and the 3’s go on without end. A lot of the time mathematicians and engineers will round these numbers. On your piece of paper, you can also try adding a decimal, like .3, to your number. The answer to your question might also depend on what set of numbers you are using in the first place. Fiedler told me about a kind of math called clock arithmetic that uses the set of numbers 1 through 12.
You might just think of those numbers 1 through 12 like the hours on a clock. For instance, in normal arithmetic, 8 + 5 equals 13. But in clock arithmetic the math works out a bit differently. The answer to 8 + 5 is actually one. Imagine you place your finger on the number eight of an analog clock, that is, a clock with hands and numbers 1 through 12. If you have a real clock, you can try this at home. Put your finger on the eight. Now count to one and put your finger on the nine.
On the second count, put your finger on the 10. On the third count, your finger goes to the 11. Perhaps, you are seeing a pattern. On the fourth count, your finger will be on the 12. Finally, on the fifth count your finger will land on the one. In clock arithmetic, 8 + 5 equals one. Of course, even in clock arithmetic, the numbers don’t really end. Once you reach the number 12, you can go back to one and start again. If you’re curious about numbers, chances are you’ve also heard of
infinity. Infinity is a bit weird, Fiedler said. Infinity is something larger than any other number we know about, but we can’t put an exact value or counting number on it like we can with numbers such as 10, 100, or 1000. Perhaps as you continue on your learning journey, you’ll investigate more about infinity. You know, this wide range of numbers allows mathematicians, scientists and engineers to work on all kinds of different problems in our world. Who knows, maybe

AWARDS, FROM PAGE 1 better place because of his incredible leadership skills.” “Our community here in Magnolia is just great, and what I do is because I love helping other kids especially. I’ve volunteered here in the schools for almost a decade and had a lot of really good experiences, and the Girl Scouts have really given back to me ... I think those girls and the students I’ve helped are really going to continue helping Seattle and Magnolia stay the great place it is,” Peterson said. Other Person of the Year nominees were Cheryl McQuiston, who was last year’s recipient for her efforts leading the committee behind the Magnolia Village beautification project; Ted and Jeanne Coulson, who spearheaded the effort to save the view at Ursula Judkins Viewpoint; and Wes Walls, who has been instrumental in leading SummerFest activities in the community and advocating for Magnolia teachers and families in need, as well as other humanitarian efforts in the city. Business of the Year was awarded to Magnolia Garden Center and owners Chuck and Margaret Flaherty for their support for the Magnolia Village beautification project. McQuiston said she has lost count of the times she has called Chuck to see if the garden center could help store items for the beautification improvements or asked how to care for flowers to be planted. She also said the Flahertys have donated the flowers for the hanging baskets for the past couple of years. McQuiston said Flaherty is also generous with his expertise and time on other projects, as well. “There basically isn’t anything he doesn’t do, and he’s so supportive of all the community,” she said. The Red Cross is asking people to schedule a blood or platelet donation as soon as possible to help ensure patients get the care they need as the blood supply is vulnerable. McQuiston said Gillmore has saved the committee over $50,000 in design and architectural fees since the project began. “He is absolutely amazing,” McQuiston said. “This would not, could not, happen without Don. He’s the architect, the project manager, the one we go to for estimates. He does it all.” Gillmore said he went to the village recently and was gratified to see all the people enjoying the benches and tables. “I really felt good about what we did, and what we’re going to do this year,” he said, adding it has been a pleasure for him to have worked on beautification committee.

cause, the most common of which is ovulatory dysfunction, though male factor infertility and tubal disease are also relatively common. Many women who come to me with irregular or absent periods have also been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, conditions with which infrequent ovulation is correlated. Other women failed to resume ovulation after years of birth control or after a pregnancy. Acupuncture and herbs help address each of these situations. Herbs are particularly influential. Beginning work with a provider six months prior to conception — natural or assisted — is ideal, as the preparation period provides time to address underlying patterns.
tified via ultrasound. Symptoms may, though not always, include menstrual irregularity, excess facial and body hair growth, acne and weight gain. From a Chinese medicine perspective, PCOS patterns reflect blood stagnation, qi stagnation and phlegm-damp. Individualized herbs and acupuncture help strengthen the function of the body’s organs in order to mobilize phlegm damp and regulate the qi and blood in the reproductive system, fostering a more regular cycle. Sometimes Western providers encourage women with anovulatory PCOS to take ovulationstimulating drugs. Both controlled studies and my experience with PCOS patients suggest that combining Chinese herbs with Clomid, for example, increases ovulation and pregnancy rates. For instance, one such study found that Clomid alone augmented ovulation and pregnancy rates to 66 percent and 37 percent, respectively, whereas Clomid and herbs combined boosted rates to 87 percent and 66 percent.
Polycystic ovary syndrome Anovulation, the most common cause of infertility, is most often due to polycystic ovary syndrome. There is no single test that identifies PCOS. Rather, a woman is diagnosed with PCOS when she presents with at least two of the following: (1) a history of menstrual irregularity; (2) high levels of androgen (male hormones); and (3) cysts on the ovaries, iden-
Other causes of infertility Other disorders that adversely affect fertility include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and endometriosis, among others. Additionally, some women endure recurrent unexplained miscarriages. All of these situations have been shown through studies and my experience to benefit significantly from Chinese medicine and acupuncture interventions. Though I have

elping patients prepare for pregnancy, and providing support throughout the process, is one of the most rewarding parts of my practice. For parent-hopefuls, the months leading to conception can be replete with pregnancy plans and hopes. For many though, the process is more trying than anticipated. Infertility — defined as the inability to conceive after a year of regular unprotected sex — is increasingly common, affecting one in eight couples in the United States. Many couples seek assistance initially through their primary care provider or reproductive endocrinologist when addressing their fertility challenges; Eastern traditions also contribute richly in both therapeutic and supportive roles and should be considered as a first-line approach. Ayurveda — the traditional medicine of India — and Chinese medicine have long histories of fostering fertility. Whether conceiving traditionally or via routes including donor eggs, donor sperm and in vitro fertilization, Eastern medicine provides approaches that address male and female roles, emphasize pre-conception preparation and diagnose and treat patients’ individual

Acupuncture, as well as herbal and nutritional support, can set the stage for successful conception among fertilitychallenged couples without need for more invasive and costly IVF or intra-uterine insemination in many cases. Furthermore, while fostering fertility, acupuncture also calms and revitalizes. Eastern medicine works advantageously as an adjunct to Western fertility treatments, as well. In fact, acupuncture is often recommended by IVF clinic, as peer-reviewed, published studies indicate that acupuncture before and after embryo transfer increases rates of conception. Approximately 85 percent of infertility has an identifiable

Hope In my work with patients with fertility challenges, almost all have ultimately achieved pregnancy, ushering a healthy baby into the world. The preconception time is a golden window of opportunity to prepare body, mind and spirit for baby-to-be. For couples hoping to embrace pregnancy in the next six months, I would recommend connecting with an experienced herbal practitioner and acupuncturist with a background in fostering fertility as a first step in their successful journey toward a healthy baby.

focused primarily on the woman’s role in fertility challenges, IVF clinics have estimated that 30 to 40 percent of infertility or sub-fertility in couples can be attributed to the male partner. Male fertility is often easier to enhance with Chinese medicine than its female counterpart, such that it is prudent to maximize the male half of the puzzle.
