with mild to moderate hearing loss (signs include trouble hearing speech in noisy places, in groups, and during phone calls).

e best place to get your hearing tested is through a hearing care provider like an audiologist. ese in-person tests are usually covered by private medical insurance, and as of this year, Medicare will pay for general hearing evaluations without a doctor’s referral.

Dear Hard, e new FDA approved over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids that hit the market last October have become a very attractive alternative to millions of older Americans with hearing impairment. ese new hearing aids can be purchased at pharmacies, consumer electronics stores or online without a hearing exam, prescription, or appointment with an audiologist. And the savings are signi cant.

e average cost of an OTC hearing aid is about $1,600 per pair, which is about $3,000 less than the average price of a prescription hearing aid.

But sorting through all the di erent options and styles can be confusing. Here are some tips along with a reliable resource that can help you choose the right aid for you.

Check Your Hearing

Your rst step to getting a hearing aid is to get your hearing tested. Be aware that OTC hearing aids are designed only for people

You can also assess your hearing at home with a good app-based hearing test like Mimi (mimi.health) or SonicCloud (soniccloud. com).

If you nd through your test that you have severe hearing loss (signs include being unable to hear spoken words even in a quiet room or trouble hearing loud music or power tools) then OTC aids aren’t the right solution for you. You’ll probably need a prescription hearing aid, which you must get through an audiologist or hearing instrument specialist.

Choosing an OTC Aid

If you decide that an OTC hearing aid may work for you, here are a couple pointers to help you choose.

First, you need to know that OTC hearing aids come in two types: self- tting and preset. Self- tting aids typically use a smartphone app to setup and adjust the device to suit your

speci c hearing needs, which makes them better suited for seniors who are technologically inclined. While preset hearing aids are much simpler devices that come with a number of set programs for di erent levels of hearing loss, and the controls are directly on the hearing aid.

Also, because OTC hearing aids have a learning curve, it’s very important to know the level of customer support you’ll have access to. So, before you buy, nd out how long the company provides support a er your purchase, and what sorts of experts will be providing the support. You also need to nd out about the company’s return policy. It can take weeks to get accustomed to wearing hearing aids and gure out whether they’re really working for you or not. So, make sure to choose a brand that o ers a minimum 30-day free trial period, or money back return policy.

Best OTC Hearing Aids

To help you cut through all the di erent options the National Council on Aging (NCOA), which is a national nonpro t organization that advocates for older Americans, recently assembled a review team who collectively spent more than 5,000 hours researching, testing and interviewing customers about OTC hearing aids.

Time travel with library’s ‘Summer Of Learning’

Children can explore their pasts, present and futures this summer. Now in its 104th year, the Seattle Public Library’s 2023 Summer of Learning encourages children and families to explore where they’ve come from, where they are right now and where they hope to be years from now.

Starting today, children and caregivers can pick up a “Time Travel Summer Action Guide” at your closest library location or at spl.org/ SummerOfLearning, to get started.

“We are encouraging time travel this summer. Activities such as reading, creative play and talking with elders can open doors to other times and places where children can discover more about themselves by learning about the past and exploring their aspirations for the future,” said Amy Twito, program manager at e Seattle Public Library.

e Summer of Learning Action Guide includes a game board and reading tracker that are available in eight languages. Set a reading goal and track your progress, draw a favorite

memory, write a letter to yourself in the future and more.

Once you’ve completed 10 squares on the game board, you can put your name up on the Wall of Superheroes at your Library location. Once you’ve completed 20 squares, you’ll earn a star on the Wall of Superheroes. And once you complete 30 squares, you’ll win an o cial Superhero Summer certi cate.

e guide also includes a Summer

of Learning youth survey which you can return to any library starting on July 1 to receive a small prize (while supplies last).

well as family activities such as dropin chess. Find out what’s on at www. spl.org/Calendar.

Sta Report

Few things beat sitting outdoors in the summer listening to the water lap the sides of the pool or ocean waves crash onto the shore. A tasty cocktail can help one cool o and make such evenings even more relaxing.

Rosé is tailor-made for warm evenings. With its pretty pink hue and delicate avor, rosé can feel as if the essence of summer has been bottled. Recently, a frozen rosé drink dubbed “frosé” emerged and made rosé even more popular. Summertime refreshment has never been the same.

ere are di erent variations of frosé. Some concoctions pour rosé over sherbet while others mix the wine with various liqueurs before freezing. is “Best Frosé Recipe,” from husband and wife home cooking experts Sonja and Alex Overhiser, is frosé at its most basic — without skimping on avor. Keep in mind that this mixture takes six hours to freeze, so prepare accordingly if you will be serving guests.

BEST FROSÉ RECIPE

Serves 6

1 750 ml bottle of favorite rosé wine (one you like to drink)

8 large strawberries (about 11⁄2 cups ripe strawberries,

halved), plus more for garnish

1 tablespoon honey (or maple syrup for vegan)

Open the rosé and pour 2⁄3 cup into a glass measuring cup; set aside for when serving.

Remove the tops of the strawberries and cut them in half.

In a blender, blend the remaining rosé, strawberries and honey until smooth and fully combined. en pour the mixture through a strainer and into a covered baking dish. Transfer the baking dish to the freezer and freeze at least 6 hours, or overnight. e alcohol in the mixture will keep it a slushy texture instead of freezing solid.

Blend the mixture again until it comes to a u y texture.

To serve, place the blended mixture into a glass. en pour a splash of rosé into each glass (this step is important: it gives the nal texture and brings in the character of the rosé).

If desired, garnish with strawberries and serve.

Wallflowers take the dance floor

It always seemed to me wallflowers couldn’t catch a break. Their Latin name, Erysimum, sounds stuffed with the wrong number of syllables. If said without confidence, or to the nonhorticulturally inclined, there’s a decent chance of sounding like you’re under the influence. The common name, “wallflower,” made me think of my parents’ generation. To them, a wallflower was someone, typically female, who was clinging to the walls of a ballroom or high school gym because they hadn’t been asked to dance. (Because the onus was on them to be desired, but that’s a topic for another day.) Adding to the confusion is that related Cherianthus were also called wall flowers, but now they all are called Erysimum. However, in that assumption I was, not for the first time, mistaken. The name more likely means literally a flower that will grow in walls, which is kind of a superpower when you think about it.

Like many English cottage garden favorites, I read about Erysimum long before I met them IRL, probably in books by Gertrude Jekyll and Louise Beebe Wilder when I first became a

gardener. E. ‘Bowle’s Mauve’, the longtime standard, was imprinted on me as a longblooming stalwart, but I found the watery violet color uninspiring, so I subconsciously filed it under “non-essential plants” for me. Fast forward to life in the Pacific Northwest, where I had to retrieve that name out of the dusty mental file when I met new cultivars beyond “Bowles’s Mauve” — and they bowled me over.

Suddenly there were new colors — reds, yellows, tangerine orange, and all kinds of blends combining all my favorite hot colors in sundae swirls of orange/ red, yellow/peach/purple, raspberry/purple. And the clincher? Not all, but most, had a delightful, honeyed floral fragrance.

I planted some E. “Apricot Twist” (because orange is my kryptonite) early on in my first years of gardening at our house in what would prove to be some really tough neighborhoods — spots choked by hawthorn and bay laurel roots, shaded by our house.

They bloomed. I cut them. They bloomed more. For weeks. Finally, they waned, and I cut them back fairly hard. They made it through summer and in September, bloomed again — and returned next March to do it

all over again!

I can hear you saying, “What’s the catch?” The catch is that then they disappeared. It turns out there are several reasons for this. Wallflowers are some of the bloomingest perennials in the garden — even better than yarrows and perennial salvia, which give a whisper of a second show after being cut back. Many are sterile, not setting seed, so that prolongs their blooming. However, they burn so fast and bright, they just can’t keep it up indefinitely. Some are biennial, dying after flowering in their second season. They also prefer gritty, well-drained soil rather than the clay against my fence (wall-flower, remember?).

Nonetheless, their attributes make them more than earn their place in my garden. They offer such delight blooming in our gray time of need (March-Mayish, sometimes longer), and those mixed colors are fabulous at bridging color combinations in the garden, pot, or vase. (Lime, red, or purple foliage looks great with any of them.) Here in Seattle, they may be evergreen. Gardens Illustrated magazine from the UK suggests regular cutting back to refresh the foliage and keep them from growing in the loosey-goosey way they can and taking insurance cuttings in July just in case. Erysimum are so popular in England they are apparently sold bare-root in the fall, which I’ve never seen here — but would like to!

Some varieties to look for:

“Bowles’ Mauve” — this classic is readily available, and can flower for up to nine months, says Gardens illustrated, but unfortunately, has no fragrance.

“Walberton’s Fragrant Star” — lemon yellow/ plum flowers with knockout variegated foliage

“Apricot Twist” — eggplant buds open to orange flowers, nice scent.

“Winter Orchid” — the Winter series is touted for larger flowers and a long bloom time. Orchid’s flowers emerge red, turning purple for a delicious bicolor effect.

Lightly scented. Erysimum × marshallii “Orange Bedder” — groundcover biennial from Siberia that often self-sows for years.

There are new choices coming out every year, so pick your favorite, and hit the dance floor.
