rrrr ya ready for some fun?! We certainly hope so, because we have a fun-filled weekend planned. On behalf of myself, and the entire board of directors, we want to welcome you to the 22nd annual Great Falls Balloon Festival. This year’s Swashbucklin' in the Sky theme will feature two special shapes—Pegleg Pete and Sunny Boy. In addition to these very special balloons, we will have close to 20 other hot air balloons to make this a spectacular weekend. All of these balloons are the awesome focal point for this annual festival. W hether you look for ward to standing beside balloons inf lating on the field, watching them launch into the twin cities’ skyline, touching down onto the water in front of the falls or glowing in the night sky—they are truly amazing. In addition to the balloons, we have a fun-filled weekend with free activities for all ages to enjoy—we’ll even have real live pirates with us for the weekend! The Pirates of the Dark Rose will be in the festival parade and on the field both Saturday and Sunday. We will continue to have entertainment on stages in Lewiston at Simard Payne Memorial Park and in Auburn at Festival Plaza. Our entertainment includes live bands, local dancers, cheerleaders and, of course, Family Fun Day on Sunday. On Saturday morning, the festival parade promises to be bigger and better than ever before! All weekend we will have carnival rides, craft and trade booths and even some free giveaways. Special shape: Pegleg Pete By Denise Scammon Special Sections Editor

Mr. Potato Head was featured in an earlier Great Falls Balloon Festival.

T

The Reinekes bought Pegleg Pete last year. “The balloon is well designed – from the belt buckle on the front to the dagger on the back and the colorful feathers. The balloon is easier to handle and the lightest balloon I've owned,” said Reineke. “It's also the easiest to put into flight.”

he special-shaped hot air balloon Pegleg Pete is a fun piece of art, according to co-owner Dave Reineke of Sunsational Skysports in Mahomet, Illinois. Reineke and his wife Kathy will travel to Maine in August with the colorful part-parrot, part-pirate balloon which is one of the featured specialty balloons in this year's Great Falls Balloon Festival in Lewiston-Auburn. In a recent phone conversation, Reineke shared some interesting information about Pegleg Pete. The balloon is more than 85 feet in height. The envelope alone weighs 500 pounds; add on the basket and the total weight comes to 1,100 pounds. The balloon's basket, which hangs between Pegleg Pete's “real” leg and “wooden” leg, is equipped with three gas tanks and is large enough to accommodate the pilot and two passengers. The husband-and-wife team have been involved in ballooning since 1978. That is when Reineke took his first hot air balloon ride and became hooked on the sport of ballooning. He received his pilot's license in 1981; they bought their first hot air balloon in 1982. Kathy got her license in 1983. The first special-shape balloon the Reinekes bought was Mr. Potato Head, which “delighted young and old from Maine Submitted Photo to Nevada, Canada and even New Zealand during his three Pegleg Pete's motto is "Arrrrr you ready for a good time?" seasons. Bud E. Beaver took to the skies in July 2004,” according to the Reineke's website at www.pirateparrotballoon.com.

Each time the Reinekes participate in the Great Falls Balloon Festival, they are provided with a local crew. Reineke looks forward to working with the local crew and enjoys having some of the same dedicated crew members return each year. When asked what it is like to f ly a special-shaped balloon compared to a plain-shaped one, Reineke compared it to driving a bus. “Flying a shaped balloon is like driving a bus as opposed to driving a car. It takes a little getting used to, but is a lot of fun.” This year's Great Falls Balloon Festival will make the third or fourth time that the Reinekes visit the Lewiston-Auburn area. “We've always enjoyed finding things to do in the area,” said Reineke. “This year we are going to try to come up a day early so we can visit Maine's coast, maybe Acadia or Bar Harbor.” He also said that eating Maine lobster is high on their list of things to do while in our great state.

“It takes between 10 to 20 crew members to handle the balloon so we use additional crew wherever we go. The local crews know the area we'll be f lying over and it's a great way to meet new people and learn about the d i f ferent places t hat we visit,” he said.

Sunny Boy's envelope weighs about 950 pounds; with the basket it's about 1,300 to 1,400 pounds. The basket can carry up to four people plus the pilot, but two to three passengers is ideal, according to Drennan.

Spectator Tips BALLOON LAUNCHES

Ballooning 101: Learn the basics of this sport By John and Mickey Reeder T he f i rst i mpression t hat comes to mind upon seeing hot air balloons is the free spirit and grace of f loating wherever the wind decides to take you. But there is much more to a hot a ir ba lloon launch and f light than just riding the wind. Hot a i r ba l loons a re considered aircraft and are reg u lated by t he Federa l Aviation Administration just as fixed-wing aircraft. Hot air balloon pilots must pass a yearly in-f light certification to maintain a commercial pi lot l ic en s e. T he Gre at Fa lls Ba lloon only inv ites pilots who have met these qualifications. T he ba l loons t hem selves must pass a yea rly sa fet y inspection which includes test i ng t he fabr ic of t he balloon, fuel system, integrity of the basket, burners and all other related equipment before the balloon receives its a n nua l a ir-wor t h iness certificate to fly. Unlike fixed-wing aircraft, a hot air balloon is dependent upon fa i r weat her. Idea l conditions are calm winds below 8 mph a nd cool temperatures. Since wind and heat come with the sun, the ideal time for a balloon to fly is early in the morning before the sun gets too high in the sky and in the early evening as the sun begins to descend. The exception to this rule would be wintertime f lying when the sun is less intense.

To inflate the balloon, pilots use inf lation fans to fill the balloon with outside air. This process is called cold packing. When the balloon is inflated enough t he pilot uses his burner to heat the inside air to approximately one hundred deg rees wa r mer t ha n t he outside temperature. This is when the balloon takes shape and is ready to f ly on a new adventure.

Launches are scheduled for 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., though act ua l lau nch t i mes may vary depending on weather conditions. This is the time of day when the winds are calmest and the air the most stable. W hile the balloons are an integral part of the Fest iv a l, or ga n i z er s w i l l a lways err on t he side of safety. Even though weather at t he f ield may appea r desirable, a launch may be ca nceled if w ind, ra in or lightning are in the area. D u r i n g a l au nc h /f l i g ht , please give the chase vehicles the right of way when they are entering and exiting a launch site or landing site. Spectators may be asked to relocate so that ba lloon vehicles may enter and exit the field safely. Be careful not to step on the fabric of the balloon envelope when the balloons are on the ground.

It i s t he heat i n side t he b a l lo on t h at m a k e s t he balloon rise. If the outside air temperature is too high, the pilot would need to add more heat to the balloon to compensate. High heat can cause damage to the fabric of the balloon.
