President’s message Greetings! It is with no small amount of pride that I welcome one and all to this year’s edition of the Great Falls Balloon Festival. This festival is the result of hours and hours of work, over months and months, by literally hundreds of people, from the two cities of Lewiston and Auburn who commit so much of their resources, to the volunteers who set up and operate the many attractions the festival has to offer, to the nonprofit organizations who are at the heart of the festival, and, of course, to the balloonists. We, the board of directors for the festival, encourage everyone to come join us on festival weekend, August 19-21, at SimardPayne Memorial Park in Lewiston, and Festival Plaza in Auburn, for what is always a memorable time. Whether you come for the entertainment (on two stages, one on each side of the river), or for the many food booths hosted by local nonprofit groups, or for the children’s area, the field demonstrations, the crafters and artists, the carnival, or the memorable experience of watching the balloons launch (or maybe even taking a ride in one), you will certainly enjoy this free community event. On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to thank all of our sponsors, the cities of Lewiston and Auburn, and the many volunteers involved in all aspects of the festival, as well as the local landowners and communities who provide safe landing areas for the balloons, for making this festival, which has become a signature event for the Twin Cities, the outstanding weekend it has grown to be. Most of all, enjoy yourselves!

Each member of t his band has over 20 years experience playing in their musical professions. This band was formed by accident, as the members just got together one day for a “fun jam” between friends who have played together before in different projects. The results were startling, and it was evident at that time, that the chemistry was too strong to not, at least, look into this a little further. T he rehea r s a l s t hat fol lowe d seemed to go more like “fun jams,” as these four friends compiled a working list of songs with such pleasure and ease, it didn’t seem like work – it wasn’t! It is evident that these musicians enjoy playing together; just catch a show, and you too will experience the enthusiasm, professional musicianship, and camaraderie that they felt on their initial get-together.

Robert Washington, the Elvis impersonator
Camp of Rock is a weeklong music camp directed by Brian Gagnon. It is modeled a f ter t he mov ie “School of Rock” and is open to musicians from ages eight to 15. These kids make music the way t hey’ve drea med of — putt ing their instrument to good use in the summer — all while having a blast! The Fairview Community Rock band was a spin-off idea of the Camp of Rock, run by Brian Gagnon.
Born in 1958 in St. Louis, MO, Rober t Washing ton was ra ised in Cape Girardeau, MO. His first memories of Elvis were of watching his movies on television. He also remembers hearing “Jail House Rock” on the radio and being impressed with the King’s style. From then on, he was a loyal Presley fan. In 1977, while Washington was serving his country in the Marine Corps, he found himself connected to Elvis because the singer died on Washington’s 19th birthday.
A f t er w at c h i ng h i s d au g ht er perform at Camp of Rock, one of the parents suggested to Brian that he do an adult version. So, he formed a band made up of kids and their parents. This year’s group has about 20 members, mostly made up of at least one parent and child, including a family of four.

After just over a year of playing together, alt-country-rockers, The Mallett Brothers Band, swept the top categories at the 2011 Portland Phoenix ’s Best Music Awa rds, winning Best Local Act, Best Live Act, and Best Local Album.
Bass guitarist Glen Mallet said, “I could say I love music, but I think that’s already been known by my background and the years gigging out w ith bands I have been in. Started playing at the age of 10, born and raised in Boston I have traveled and played everywhere. I must say, The MaineStream Band is the most energetic and so full of talent that I just had to be part of it. I have a background in classic rock and played all over as I traveled in the Nav y and played with many musicians while in Iceland, Sicily, P uer to R ico, a nd Ber muda . I like the music of the Top 40 and I would like to hook up with my band members to write and record our own songs; now that’s a goal to reach.” With the talent of The Mainestream Band, that’s not too far from happening.

A word from the company: We love what we do and we love sharing this playful adventure with people. Kids, adults ... ever yone’s included. W hen people ask what we do, we usually say we have a skill toy and enter t a i n ment c ompa ny w here w e te ach people of all ages how to play with skill toys at events and celebrations. That’s the long answer. The short answer is ”we play with people”. It sounds pretty simple, but talking about it further reveals a deeper truth. Really, we seek to inspire and activate a lifelong spirit of play fulness. You see, we believe that play really can change the world. A little bold, we know, but we have our reasons.

The kind of play we’re talking about is active, creative, expressive and cooperative. Play that encourages and affirms a person’s sense of being awesome. Sometimes when we’re playing with our toys and we do something really cool, it kind of feels like we’re Jedi Superheroes.

Jason Spooner Trio T h is mu lt i-awa rd w i n n i ng, New England-based song w riter discovered his father’s collection of eight-track tapes as a child and never looked back. A f ter ea rly exposure to song writer legends like Neil Young, Paul Simon, Jim Croce and Van Morrison, along with Motown heavies like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight, Spooner was inspired to start making the rounds on coffee
house stages in his teens. Shortly thereafter, he spent time in Europe performing in folk and blues clubs and on the streets of London and around Spain. O nc e ba c k i n t he s t at e s, he landed a job at a roots and blues record label where he witnessed numerous blues legends (including members of the original Muddy Waters band) ma k ing magic in recording sessions. Before long, Spooner jumped head-first into the Northeast’s burgeoning songwriter scene. Sea Monster, t he t h i rd st ud io album released in 2010, is active

proof that the independent path is the way of the future. Co-produced by Spooner and Jonathan Wyman, Sea Monster was recorded in Maine with longtime touring bandmates Adam Frederick on bass and Reed Chambers on drums, and features a guest appearance from veteran pedal steel virtuoso Bucky Baxter (Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams, R.E.M). “I think we definitely unearthed some new ter r itor y w it h t h i s record,” said Spooner. “We spent countless w inter months in my dr ummer’s attic shaping t hese tunes from the ground up as a band.” Sea Monster is a departure from Spooner’s previous releases. He ex pla i ned, “I n t he pa st, I had been so focused on making acoustic music that the electric was relegated to more of a supporting role: one of the smaller brushes in the batch. This time around, I just focused on the right guitar for the right song. There’s no question that the electrics ended up front and center on this record and I’m very happy with the progression.” T he a lbu m’s t h i rd si ng le, a n instantly lovable and more rootsy take on Trent Trent D’Arby’s 80s classic, “Wishing Well,” debuted in March 2011 as the Third Most Added t rack at Tr iple A rad io behind Radiohead at #1 and Los Lonely Boys at #2. Spooner has received overwhelming recognition for his songwriting talents from prestigious outlets i nclud i ng Mou nta i n Stage, Starbucks Music Makers, SXSW,
The Food Network, NPR’s Car Talk, The Kerrville Folk Fest New Folk Competition, and The Falcon Ridge Folk Festival’s Most Wanted Poll. Spooner and his band have toured extensively over the past few years, sha r i ng t he stage w it h a r t ists including Ray LaMontagne, Brandi Carlile, Guster, Amos Lee, Blues Traveler, Kathleen Edwards, Jackie Greene, Carbon Leaf and more.
Johnny A. Johnny A. has one of t he most eloquent voices in modern music – and he doesn’t sing a note. Instead, he cha n nels joy, love, hu mor, sadness ... ever y aspect of t he human experience, through his guitar. Only the finest musicians have the abilit y to capture the nuances of life in sound, which puts Johnny A. in a very exclusive group of six-stringers that includes Les Paul, Wes Montgomery, Jeff Beck, Chet Atkins, and Jimi Hendrix. The secret is his blend of melody, sonic definition, technique and t h at i ndef i n a ble -y et-t a ng ible qua lit y ca lled “soul.” A nd he’s eloquent ly sha red t hat secret on t he CDs Sometime Tuesday Morning (2001), Get Inside (2004), and the instructional DVD Taste, Tone, Space (2006), which a re approaching combined sales of 150,000 copies. All the virtues of Johnny A.’s playing are in abundant display on One November Night, a brand new DVD/CD set recorded live at Scullers in his hometown of Boston, MA.
“We were coming off a long tour,” Joh n ny A . relate d . “Plu s, my daughter had just been in her first car wreck, so I wasn’t sure if we should even record this show, and yet, the music and the audience and the night were beautiful. Everyone and everything in the room came together to make it an extremely special experience.” A lt houg h a n i n st r u ment a l i st, Johnny A. thinks like a singer as he plays, composes and improvises on guitar. “I’m always interested in dynamics and tone far more than the amount of notes played,” Johnny explained. “What’s most important is that every song has a strong, clear melody; not how fast or f lashy the solo is going to be. That’s a lesson I learned when I fel l in love w it h The Beat les and ot her bands of t he British Invasion, which is still my favorite era in music.” A s Johnny A. ex plores va r ious genres from song to song, melody remains as the unifying backbone of his voice. And the way he plays those melodies is highly personal. His blend of a hybr id pick i ng st y le a nd a n u nc onvent iona l approach to playing chord-based melodies helps create a sound that’s absolutely his own. And it’s complimented by a n u ner r ing sense of rhythm developed on the first instrument he played as a youngster: drums.

Johnny A. has been getting that kind of reaction from fans and other musicians since he was in his teens, working his way up from playing pizza parlors to headlining now-historic Boston clubs like the Rat with his bands The Streets, Hidden Secret and Hearts on Fire. He also has the distinction of being the last guitar player to perform at the historic Boston Garden before its demolition.

Activities in Lewiston-Auburn during the Balloon Festival Sponsored by the Auburn/ Lewiston Breakfast Rotary Club The annual Great Rubber Ducky Race will be held again this year at noon on Sunday. Volunteers will be on hand all weekend at the Festival to sell numbered duckies. The ducks will be dumped into the canal from Union Water Power Station and will float their way to the finish line at the Bates Mill gate. The first duck to cross the finish line will earn $1,000 for its owner. Prizes will be awarded for other place winners as well. The money raised is to be donated to charities for programs specific to children at risk with various needs in the L-A community.
Andy Valley Gymnastics Andy Valley Gymnastics has been prov id i ng qua l it y g y m na st ic s i n st r uc t ion i n t he L e w i stonAubu r n a rea for 35 yea rs, upg rad i ng t hei r equ ipment a nd improv ing t heir coach i ng techniques on an ongoing basis. Their 5,000 sq. ft. facility is located on Westminster Street. Their highly trained staff, led by Rod Gendron, has produced highlevel gymnasts. Safety is a primary concern, while individual needs, sel f con f idence, coord i nat ion, f lexibility, balance and strength are enhanced in an atmosphere that allows each gymnast to grow at their own pace while enjoying the learning experience.
Special programs at Museum L-A for the festival In addition to its award-winning exhibits, Museum L-A will present special programs during this year’s Great Falls Balloon Festival and offer free admission on Saturday, Aug ust 20. On Friday, Aug ust 19, journalist and historian, Joe Manning, will present, “The Lewis H i ne P rojec t : Track i ng Dow n t he L ives of C h i ld L aborer s.” S at u r d a y ’s pr o g r a m fe at u r e s author Janet H. Gibson ta lk ing about her publication, “A History of Lewiston-Auburn Community Little Theatre,” and signing copies of her book. Both programs begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Museum’s firstfloor gallery. For a lmost si x years, Ma nning has been identifying some of the
more than 5,000 child laborers photographed in the early 1900s by L e w i s W. H i ne, a nd t hen tracking down and interviewing their descendants.
Committee hired him in 1908 to take photographs of the children i n or nea r t hei r work places – including mills in Lewiston – in order to expose t heir plight to as ma ny in f luent ia l people as possible. Hine did that for the next 10 years.
One of the stories Manning will share is about Napoleon Camire, a textile mill worker photographed in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1909. Later, Napoleon Camire moved to the Lew iston-Auburn area where he worked in the mills and lived the rest of his life. Many of Camire’s descendants are still living in the Lewiston-Auburn area.
Manning will show many of these h istor ic photog raphs, tel l t he stories of the children in them, and talk about the exciting process of searching for descendants, most of whom were not aware of the historic pictures of their parents and grandparents. Some of the stories will be about young sardine c a n ner y worker s i n Ea st por t, Maine. Hine took over 50 photos of these children in 1911.
Manning has been successful at telling the stories of more than 250 children, thus answering, many times over, the proverbial question, “Whatever happened to that kid?”
