President’s greetings Greetings friends, The annual awards program of the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce is the largest single celebration of excellence in our communities. The event is a total sellout with Chamber members and others joining to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of award winners. 2011 marks The Chamber’s 123rd annual meeting and there will be 13 individuals and/ or organizations receiving the prestigious awards - but many, many other businesses and organizations are deserving of recognition. This year there were 54 nominations of people who have done remarkable things in our communities-who have contributed to our local economy and to the positive transformation of our area. The selection of winners was very difficult. The Chamber board of directors joins me in congratulating the winners and thanking them for all they have done to make our area such a great place to live, work, and play.

Oxford Networks & TD Bank to sponsor Chamber’s 123rd annual meeting Chamber members and guests will gather at the Ramada Conference Center on Thursday, January 27 for the 123rd Annual Meeting and Awards program-The Chamber’s largest event of the year. The annual meeting will feature The Chamber Awards program, emceed by Chamber board chair, Susan Stacey of Central Maine Community College. Those being recognized include: The Chamber’s new members in 2010; past and present Chamber leaders; and the distinguished community members who will

receive The Chamber’s highest awards. The evening will begin at 5 p.m. The cost is $50 per person and reservations are required (early registrations are encouraged.) Special recognition will be given to organizations that are table sponsors. The prime sponsors of the annual meeting are Oxford Networks & TD Bank and co-sponsors are Procter & Gamble, Poland Spring Bottling Company, Maine Turnpike Authority, and Central Maine Power Company.

“From regional advocac y, to environmental stewardship, to education,” said Chamber President Chip Morrison, “our annual awards are a chance to acknowledge some of the best of who we are.” Paul Badeau, marketing director of the Lewiston-Auburn Economic Growth Council since 1998, and recipient of the Public Service Leadership Award, is, according to Morrison, “a key partner in our successful effort to bring positive recognition to the L-A

area.” Badeau helped launch the “It’s Happening Here” campaign, the annual Business-to-Business trade show – the biggest event of its kind in the state – and the new “Launch L-A” contest designed to attract young entrepreneurs to the community. The Community Service Leadership Award is presented jointly to Androsco ggin Bank , Auburn Savings Bank and Mechanic Savings Bank, especially for their collective e f for t to provide se e d and matching funding to a scholarship

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE:

CHAMBER AWARDS HONOR COMMUNITY LEADERS

“There are lots of reasons I look forward to our annual meeting ever year,” said Chamber President Chip Morrison, “but one of the most important is that the meeting gives us the opportunity to recognize individuals and businesses that help make our community what it is; that give us our unique character and quality of place.” The roster of those recognized this year includes two recipients of the President’s Award. Jim Day and Nick Glicos have been widely credited with having saved Martindale Country Club. When they assumed ownership following the 2009 season, the unique 90-year-old community institution was on the brink of demise, faced with possible closure. The pair invested the club with new energy and excitement, along with hard work and financing, and the result has been the preservation of one of our most distinctive assets. Two decades ago, by some assessments, it was not possible to get a decent loaf of bread in the twin cities. That has certainly changed, and in no small part thanks to the efforts of Dara Reimers, the indefatigable proprietor of the Bread Shack. The creator of award-winning artisan breads and spectacular pastries, Reimers created one of the decade’s most successful new businesses, amazed people with her energy and industriousness, and provided some of the area’s most coveted prizes and fund-raising items. Among the most prestigious Chamber awards are two named for two stalwarts of the local business community. The Ray Geiger Award, recognizes a Chamber member who has made a “significant contribution in support of the Chamber’s mission,” and is conferred this year on Peter Murphy, of NeoKraft Signs, a member of the Chamber’s board since 2003, a major supporter of the “It’s Happening Here” campaign, past board chair and someone who answers calls to help the Chamber by quietly saying, “Yes, I’ll do it.” The Ken Additon Small Business Advocate Award will be presented to the Maine Centers for Women, Work and Community, the only statewide comprehensive women’s economic development organization in

CONGRATULATIONS

Annually, The Chamber honors a number of organizations and individuals for their significant contributions to our communities. This year’s awards will be presented at the 2011 Annual Meeting at the Ramada Conference Center on Thursday, January 27th. The Chamber is pleased to recognize the following individuals and businesses. The Business Leadership Award for a larger company will be presented to The Wal-Mart Distribution Center and General Manager, Cathlin Foster. The distribution center has the distinction of being one of the largest development projects in Maine in the last decade and their impact on the Lewiston-Auburn employment has been monumental, bringing hundreds of good paying jobs in the transportation/logistics sector. In addition Wal-Mart has been a community leader in United Way and many other community endeavors. The Business Leadership Award for a smaller company will be presented to Cassiel’s Salon and Spa. Owner Diane Dubois has overcome a series of obstacles that would have sidetracked someone with lesser drive, but she has persevered and continuously expanded her business to one of the largest of its kind in the area. Like other successful businesses, Cassiel’s couples their growing success with concern and support for the community. The prestigious Ray Geiger Award will be presented to Peter Murphy of Neokraft Signs for his long standing support for and leadership of The Chamber. After seven years on the Board of Directors including a term as chair of the board, Peter has returned to serve as co-chair of the Regional Image Committee. Annually for the past decade, he has donated signs for the Scholarship Scramble and helped out with the Grains and Grapes Festival as well. Whatever The Chamber asked, Peter has always said yes – and then gone above and beyond what was expected. The Community Service Leadership Award will be presented to three local banks that have collaboratively started a scholarship challenge to support students at USM at Lewiston Auburn College. Mechanics Savings Bank, Auburn Savings Bank and Androscoggin Bank will be recognized for their trend-setting collaboration. Together they put up $24,000 to match like amounts to bring scholarships to students in need at LAC.

To all the award winners at the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet from your friends at the The Education Award will be presented to Southern New Hampshire University for the development of an MBA program in the Lewiston-Auburn area. Seeing a need SNHU worked collaboratively with Central Maine Community College for a program that starts this month. Two years ago The Chamber introduced a new award, “The Cool Chamber Award,” which is presented to an organization or individual that has made a significant difference in reducing energy usage and preserving resources. The 2011 award will be presented to Jim Wellehan and Bruce Damon who have been active in the cities of Auburn and Lewiston respectively – pushing the municipalities to move ahead with community conservation programs. The Ken Additon Small Business Advocate award will be presented to Women, Work & Community for their pioneering work in developing new entrepreneurs in the communities. There will be two winners of the prestigious President’s Award. The first will be awarded to The Bread Shack and owner Dara Reimers for the great work she has done in developing a “destination bakery” for our communities. The second President’s award will go to Jim Day and Nick Glicos, the new owners of Martindale Country Club for stepping forward and taking over a major community organization that was on the brink of failure.

pool to support local students seeking a degree at Lewiston Auburn College. These three banks have been serving the community for an aggregate of more than 395 years, with combined philanthropic efforts supporting hundreds of local organizations annually. Southern New Hampshire University is being recognized with the Education Award. For years, Chamber members and local businesses have identified the need for a post graduate program in business administration in our communities, and SNHU began work toward that objective in 2009, using facilities at Central Maine Community College. The new MBA program started this January with 16 students. Introduced just last year, the Cool Chamber Award recognizes those who have made significant contributions to energy savings. Bruce Damon, of Damon Mechanical Services, and Lamey Wellhehan’s Jim Wellehan are pioneers on the frontier of energy efficiency. Wellehan was a pioneer in recycling efforts in Lamey Wellehan stores long before it was fashionable. He has long been an advocate that buildings should have zero carbon emissions and has moved to building facilities that are totally energy

Leaders from page 4 Maine. The organization has grown from one site to 18 sites serving all 16 Maine counties. Their work in the Lewiston-Auburn area is centered at Lewiston Auburn College and many of their graduates are in businesses in the area. The Business Leadership Award is presented jointly to the WalMart Distribution Center and to Cassiel’s Salon and Spa, one of the area’s most unique businesses. The WalMart facility was the largest earth-moving project in Maine since the creation of the turnpike, and now employs more than 600 local people and contributes more than $25-million to the local economy. Cassiel’s was founded by Diane Dubois in 1992 and has grown into a full service, 5,000 square-foot facility with a staff of 18. Diane attributes much of her success to her staff. “I love that we have a team of providers who are as passionate about their craft and their clients as I am,” she said. Giving to the community is another essential part of her business model. The company currently donates 8% of their net income, and the goal is to achieve contributions totaling between 10 – 12%.

efficient. Damon is chair of the city of Lewiston’s “Energy Savings Committee” – and the city is now widely recognized for its progress. The Poland Business Award, presented by the Chamber for only the second time, is conferred on the Poland Spring Inn and Resort, which has been serving guests since 1790 when it started as an overnight stagecoach stop. From there it grew to one of the world’s most renowned summer resorts. Today, it anchors the remarkable array of the community’s tourism assets – from the historic Maine State Building, to Poland Spring Preservation Park, to Range Pond State Park, to the Shaker Village and museum. The resort’s owner, Cyndi Robbins, gives some of Maine’s deployed troops and their immediate family nostrings-attached stays at the inn. All proceeds from the resort’s Heritage Days go to the nonprofit Poland Spring Preservation Society. The Turner Business Award, presented to a business that has made a significant contribution to the town of Turner, is presented to Accidental Anomalies, now one of northern New England’s leading fabricators of custom stairs and handrail systems. They specialize in difficult and challenging designs, both in new construction and in remodeling.
