Edward Little High School ELHS GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Coach: Craig Jipson (sixth year) Last year ’s record: 13- 6, lost in Eastern A quarterfinals. Returning letter winners: Seniors — Frankie Lally ( 5-6 guard), Miranda Martin (5-9 center), Dawna Daigle (5-11 center); Juniors — Emily Hartnett (5-4 guard), Marykate Masters (5-6 guard), Kelly Philbrook (5-5 guard); Sophomores — Ashlee Arnold (5-7 guard), Kate Sawyer (5-6 guard). Key losses: Kirsten Prue (guard), Kayla Cummings (center). Promising newcomers: Sophomore — Taylor French (5-8 forward); Freshmen — Kory Norcross
(5-7 guard), Kennedy Hubbard (5-8 forward). Outlook: EL lost two KVAC all-stars in Prue and Cummings and also lost post player, Crissy Lewis, to Oxford Hills. The Red Eddies still have eight players returning. Replacing 34 points per game lost to graduation will be a challenge, especially with a smaller lineup. EL has some good athletes, some perimeter shooting and a solid defense. That should keep it competitive with most clubs. Coach’s comment: “I love our athleticism and how hard we play every time we step on the floor. Taylor Landry is already turning heads as a freshman on the blue line, and Stanley returns after backstopping Leavitt’s solo entry last season, a team that went deep into the

Promising newcomers: Boys: Junior — Nigel Bowles; Freshmen — Brian Crane, Evan Mancini, Dylan Blanchard. Girls: Freshman — Julia Langevin. Outlook: A handful of new skiers will bring a boost of energy to the depth side of the lineup, and with a solid nucleus returning for both the boys and girls, expect, as always, to see the Red Eddies in contention. Coach’s comment: “The team is really excited to get on the snow and start skiing fast.” — Coach Tara Eretzian
Emily Grund, Kelsey Letourneau; Junior — Jaclyn Masters. Outlook: Hunter, an assistant to Rebecca Hefty last year, swaps places with the former head coach and inherits a young but promising team with a lot of raw talent. Masters and Henry are outdoor track veterans moving over from basketball, while Grund, an all-conference soccer player, and Delorme are expected to contribute despite their lack of experience. They should be stronger in the distance events than last year Coach’s comment: “I think it’s going to be a surprising year for us because we have some really strong new athletes to the sport.” — Coach Calvin Hunter

playoffs and had a great regular-season record. The infusion of talent from EL should make the core group from Leavitt’s run last year that much better, and a playoff win this season is not out of the question. Cody Meserve
Outlook: The Red Eddies are in rebuilding mode with 15 swimmers on the roster, a slight decrease from last year. Losing two-time Sun Journal swimmer of the year Brodsky will hurt, but Treadwell could help fill the void as one of the top freestyle sprinters in the KVAC. Paione qualified for states last year. Morrison will be looking for improvement from his younger competitors as much as wins. returning, the Eddies will again have a team to watch, and may even have a chance to improve again on that finish. The boys will have a scoring team for the first time in a while, too, and with Campbell back at the helm, the sky is the limit for this small but growing squad. Coach’s comment: “I really think we can surprise a lot of people with the girls we have this year. Outlook: Edward Little has evolved into the definition of a powerhouse, staying at the top of the KVAC and Eastern Class A with an ever-changing cast of characters. With no fewer than six recent Red Eddies now playing in Division II or III college hoop, EL remains the South division favorite and is weighed as a contender for its third straight regional title. The Leary brothers will provide scoring and rebounding. Mains is tireless, fearless and one of the premier point guards in the state. EL will need someone to step forward and replace Iman’s leadership and willingness to take the big shot in a close game. Coach’s comment: “We have some guys who might have played a lot already for other programs and haven’t had a chance to dress for us. with a balanced boys team and a young girls squad. Hersi and Ibrahim were among the top five in the mile and 2-mile last year, respectively, and Lavertu should be a factor in the distance events as well. Pandora and Gaghan were top junior throwers as sophomores, although Gaghan probably won’t be back until the new year as he recovers from a shoulder injury suffered in football. About 3/4 of the girls roster consists of sophomores and freshmen, but Crowley expects them to be competitive during the regular season. Coach’s comment: “Last year at KVAC’s, the boys and girls both came in fourth place. We’d like to imporove upon those team goals.” — Coach Jamerson Crowley

Steele; Freshmen — Kyle Lemelin (F), Patrick Deblois (D). Outlook: If there has ever been a strong favorite to win a regional title, this would be the year. The Blue Devils are stacked from back to front, with a senior-heavy lineup littered with league all-stars. Poussard has been one of the best in the state for three
seasons in the cage, and with so much firepower in front of him, there is little doubt which team wears the bull’s-eye. Westbrook, a perennial Class A playoff contender, opened some eyes. Lewiston returns only one starter, Hyde, but he is expected to be one of the top players in the KVAC South. Farrar believes the Devils will be able to develop the one or two outside shooters they’ve lacked in recent seasons. And one notable strength despite the recent struggles — quickness and the ability to run the floor from start to finish — remains intact. Wins in December would help the team’s confidence as well as its tournament hopes. The roster is made up of eight underclassmen. Lewiston will have to see how well the newcomers adjust to the rigors of the varsity level and learn along the way. Coach’s comment: “This will be a season of trials and adversity. The youth of the team compounded with lack of game experience will be a challenge. But it will be a challenge met with enthusiasm, desire and determination. Overall, play may be ugly at times, but the team plays with grit and pride. This will be a huge learning year for our team, and they are ready for whatever may come their way.” — Coach Mike McGraw

Key losses: Cody Violette, Eagan Nadeau, Eric Theiss, Nick Urquhart, Cole Rowland.
LEAVITT GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Coach: Tammy Anderson (seventh year) Last year’s record: 18-2, lost in Western B semifinal. Returning letter winners: Seniors — Courtney Anderson (5-5 guard), Abbey Randall (5-4 guard); Juniors — Amanda Jordan (5-8 forward), Adrie Newton (5-9 forward), Sarah Frost (5-8 forward), Kasidy Stevenson (forward); Sophomores - Kristen Anderson (5-7 guard), Mariah Treadwell (5-5 guard), Jenna Cote (guard/forward), Desiree Tweedie (5-4 guard). Promising newcomers: Freshman — Kelly Pomerleau (5-5 guard).
LEAVITT ALPINE SKIING Coach: Karly Eretzian (seventh year) Last year’s record: Boys - 4th at Class A states; Girls - 13th at Class A states. LEAVITT NORDIC SKIING Coach: Dustin Williamson (seventh year) Last year ’s record: Boys - K VAC champions, Class A state champions; Girls - KVAC runners-up, third at Class A states. Returning players: Boys: Senior — Keith Lemelin; Juniors — Walker Perkins, Nate Miller; Sophomores — Ben Ramser, Justin Bean. Key losses: Allison Fereshetian, Kate McKeown, Derek Drouin, Travis Adams, Dylan Chase, Bob McKinney, Ryan Fournier, Cody Cyr. Promising newcomers: Boys:
Promising newcomers: Sophomores — Jacob Gladu (F), Nick Allen (F), Tyler Hutchinson (F). Outlook: Leavitt is a consistant, middle-of-the-pack team in Western Class B. Since the league now only takes four teams to the playoffs, middle of the pack doesn’t quite mean a playoff berth anymore. With a new coach and a solid group of returning players, this team will take some time to ramp up, but should be once again battling for a playoff berth this season. Coach’s comment: “In the past, Leavitt has been a middle of the road team. With hard work and discipline, I’m hoping to get to the next level.” Cooper Legee — Coach Josh Gregoire
Key losses: Danielle Brewer (guard/forward). Outlook: The Hornets return almost all of last year’s club, including allconference players Courtney Anderson (18.7 ppg), Kristen Anderson (15 ppg) and Newton (15.4 ppg). Leavitt scored at an impressive 67.4 points per game clip and should be just as prolific as last year. The Hornets won’t sneak up on teams this year, but they’ll still be hard to match up against, especially with Leavitt’s fast-paced style. The Hornets should be a contender for the KVAC title again and a threat in Western B. Coach’s comment: “We play a fast-paced, fun game with great intensity. We know each other well on and off the court. Our potential is great, and we hope to succeed and have fun doing it.” — Coach Tammy Anderson.
There is a group of experienced skiers who competed at the state meet, J2 Festival, and the Eastern High School Championships last year, and the Hornets will be a strong favorite in the KVAC and state Class A meets. Coach’s comment: “The girls team will be making heads turn and will be vying for conference and state championships. I am very excited to see what the boys team can do because they are motivated and ready.” — Coach Dustin Williamson

Promising newcomers: None given. Outlook: Big graduation losses on the boys’ side will make it hard to duplicate last year’s finish, but nothing is impossible for the Hornets, who always seem to remain in contention in a crowded Class A field. With a lot of losses league- and state-wide, the Class A field appears to be wide open. Coach’s comment: “There is a huge motivation I can see in them, as long as that carries out on the hill, there is no telling what could happen.” — Coach Karly Eretzian
Sophomore — Jacob Harris; Freshmen — Colby Varney, Matthew Thibodeau, Rylee Knox. Girls: Sophomore — Morgan Shaw; Freshmen — Kallah Turner, Michaela Therrien, Allison Simmons, Dana Monbleau, Alisha Labbe, Abby Chase. Outlook: The boys’ team took a big hit due to graduation last year, but the skiers who are back and the newcomers are, according to Williamson, ready to roll. The girls outnumber the boys by a lot and the girls’ team is very talented.

OXFORD ALPINE SKIING Coach: Mike Grace (12th year) Last year’s record: Boys - 8th at Class A states; Girls - 5th at Class A states. Returning players: Boys: Junior — Nick Michaud; Sophomore — Ryan Stuart. Girls: Seniors — Marisa Hanning, Kristen Lindstrom, Kayla Turner, Claire Stauder, Leslie Grover; Junior — Victoria Ebsworth; Sophomores — Colleen Stauder, Mimi Baumhoff, Samantha Hatch, Amanda Hanning. Outlook: The Hornets return four starters, including the backcourt Allen should be a good one-two punch in the frontcourt.” of Witham and Smith and the all-around talents of Hersom, one — Coach Mike Hathaway of the top players in KVAC Class B. Allen, Witham and Hersom are three-year starters and were Leavitt’s top three scorers and rebounders last season. Smith, a defensive stalwart, has improved his game on offense. Hathaway expects the Hornets to go at least 10 players deep most nights. Leavitt is athletic enough to push the tempo and play more man-to-man defense than in past seasons. The playoffs are within reach. Coach’s comment: “Our guard play is as good as it’s been since I have been here. Hersom and Kyle Smith Lucas Witham Tyler Allen

varsity level. Eastman, at point guard, is the only starter back. She was an all-rookie selection as a freshman in the KVAC. Lewis, a transfer from Edward Little, saw quality varsity minutes in the post last year and was a KVAC honorable mention. The rest of the squad is unproven at this level. Pelletier’s squads typically work hard and play sound defense. If the offense comes around and the team gains some confidence, the Vikings should improve quickly. Coach’s comment: “With only one returning starter, this year will have its ups and downs. We will be very competitive night in and night out. The transformation of this team from the start to the end will be very exciting to watch. We have the ability to run and gun or slow it down. Our overall goal is to get into the playoffs and see what happens.” — Coach Nate Pelletier
Dayna Schultz
Freshman — Matt Beauchesne (5-8 guard). Outlook: Oxford Hills bid farewell to the giant senior class that fueled its Class A baseball championship run. They’ve been in the middle of the pack in KVAC basketball for a few years, and at first glance the Vikings are so young that you might pencil them in at that level once again. Graffam is high on his team’s young talent, however, and the topsy-turvy nature of the southern division might allow them to sneak into the tournament a year ahead of schedule. MacDonald and McVety saw the most significant playing time last season. They give Oxford Hills a formidable frontcourt tandem. Coach’s comment: “(We’re) young and inexperienced but pretty talented. Probably fighting for one of the last spots in Augusta.”
Matt McVety
Dan Taylor
— Coach Scott Graffam
Promising newcomers: Boys: Freshmen — Andrew Hatch, Matt Michaud, Kieran Sadler, Kane Williamson. Outlook: The boys lost a bunch of experience to graduation, and have a large group of incoming skiers. This won’t be the year the Vikings run at a state crown. But the boys should still be competitive. The girls, meanwhile, are very experienced this season, and very deep. Look for the Vikings to poke their heds into the KVAC mix this season. Coach’s comment: “With boys being so young, I believe we will do well to finish in the top 6. The girls should do well depending on how we progress through the season. It all comes done to who skis clean and fast in the big meets.” — Coach Mike Grace

have contributed for three years. The Rebels’ bugaboo last year was the road, where they won only one game and struggled even against teams in the lower echelon of the league. Being able to sweep that caliber of opponent is key to their tournament hopes. Thurlow tested his club with a preseason schedule that included Class A Oxford Hills and an alumni game featuring recent 1,000-point scorers Kinsey Durgin and Sean Caddigan. Coach’s comment: The first five games are big. A lot of old coaches say you make the tournament in December. — Coach Mark Thurlow

Davis and Putnam played with the boys’ program last year. Davis, Day and Walker played with the Rebels as freshmen and sophomores. There will certainly be growing pains this season as the program gets started again, but with nine freshmen, there’s a nucleus to build from. Coach’s comment: “They are young and inexperienced, but they very energetic and are a great group of kids. I’m Emma Davis Jenna Putnam Nicena Walker very lucky. All 17 get along extremely well. They’re very
Outlook: The good news for the Rebels is that every skier from last season returns, and that should spell a strong push to the top, or at least close to it, in the MVC, and a better showing at states. The bad news is that this team lacks youth for depth. For the next couple of years, though, Telstar will be a team to watch. Coach’s comment: “With everybody back from last year’s team, we hope to move up one or two spots in both the MVC and state meets. — Coach Gary Wight

Outlook: For the girls, it’s a rebuilding season after losing two of Class C’s top skiers in Largess and Cowin. The good news, though, is that there is a good crop of newcomers in place to help the transition, including some upperclassmen. The boys are missing just one skier from a year ago and are in good position to contend again in the MVC and Class C state meets. Coach’s comment: ”The door is open for the new girls to step up and help Lee and Wheeler uphold the Telstar girls’ winning traditions. Coach’s comment: “Although we graduated several key contributors from our program, I am very excited and optimistic about the potential of this year’s group. We have three great leaders returning in our seniors. Our inexperienced players are playing with tons of confidence. We will have the ability to put five players on the floor who can run up and down the floor and score in a variety of ways. Rt. 4, Jay - 645-2581
Outlook: The Tigers lost three regulars from last year’s club that led the MVC in scoring (46.2 ppg), but Jay still has Moore, who was an allconference player that led the MVC in rebounds (10.5) and averaged 10 points per game. Blodgett also chipped in 10 points per outing and led the MVC in 3-pointers with 37. White, Deering and DiPompo all saw quality time off the bench. That’s a solid nucleus to work with, and a promising group of new players could help fill in and keep the Tigers strong in the MVC. Coach’s comment: “We have a good group of girls that work hard and enjoy playing together and have great leadership. That should allow us to improve as the season progresses and hopefully make some noise in February as the younger players work their way in.” — Coach Chris Bessey
Freshman — Cassidy Couture. Outlook: This Jay boys’ team is a year older and, presumably, a year faster. If the team’s top four can stand up in the big races, the Tigers could make some noise at the state Class C level as much as training partner Livermore Falls. Coach’s comment: “We have the chance to have a really solid season this year.” — Coach Ken Jacques

Good Luck To All Area Athletes!
Trevin Dunlop (6-4 forward) Outlook: The Tigers are poised to end a nagging tournament drought. The backcourt returns intact after Bessey and Bonnevie received a baptism by fire and steadily improved throughout the season as sophomores. Storer is a tireless rebounder who expects to increase his scoring output. Barker was a pleasant surprise last winter and may be ready for a breakout year. The few newcomers provide size and strength. Jay again faces a rugged schedule in the MVC North, but turning around two or three of last year’s close losses should be enough to punch the Tigers’ ticket to Augusta. Coach’s comment: ”We’re still young, but they know more about what it takes. So far they’ve definitely upped their game.” — Coach Brian Kelly

Outlook: Rose and Jacques are about as formidable a 1-2 punch as there is in any class in Maine, and the fact that both are coming off solid seasons will only bolster their confidence. The Andies missed a Class C crown a year ago by less than a tenth of a second, and there is a measure of redemption in the team’s goals this season. Outlook: Livermore Falls lost seven seniors from a team that made the school’s first trip to the regional final in 21 years. It’s still an experienced group, however, with nine seniors. The Andies will be counting on role players from last year’s team such as Anctil and Brett to step into the spotlight. Armstrong emerged as one of the top big men in the MVC as a junior. New faces to the starting lineup will have to hit the hardwood running: The Andies open the season at rival Jay. Coach’s comment: “This is a special group. MONMOUTH WRESTLING
Outlook: Monmouth qualified for its first Western C tournament since 1977, falling to Traip at home in the opening round. One of this year’s goals is to continue that progress. Led by the return of point guard Whitmore, starter Neal and last year’s sixth man Bachelder, the Mustangs are considered one of the top teams in a balanced MVC South. Defense and a disciplined halfcourt game were Monmouth’s calling card in 200910. Without overwhelming size, those traits will be equally important as the Mustangs shoot for an encore playoff appearance. An influx of new talent has the numbers strong enough this year that they should have every weight class filled except 103. Outlook: The Cougars’ ballyhooed Class of 2012 is a year older, wiser and stronger. Sennick, Berry and Hart are returning starters. WilesRosell combines with Sennick to give Mt. Blue size and experience in the paint. Mt. Blue has been to the Eastern Class A quarterfinals every year since the tournament moved to Augusta, and this year should be no exception. The Cougars’ biggest challenge again may be their tournament seed, thanks to a rugged KVAC North schedule that includes home-and-home series with Bangor, Hampden, Brewer and Lawrence. Coach’s comment: “They’re a pretty veteran group, even though they’re still relatively young.” — Coach Jim Bessey
Heather Farrington
Outlook: The boys’ and girls’ teams both suffered significant losses in terms of talent, but both squads gain just as many newcomers with strong backgrounds. The boys will get stronger all season as the freshmen get used to high school, and the seniors, Brody Hines and Tim Andrews, will lead the way. The girls’ team had a lot of depth to begin with, so it will contend. again. Senior Hannah Allen will lead the girls. Coach’s comment: “The boys’ team will be in a building mode with some excellent new recruits after some key losses. There is the possibility that we may exceed people’s expectations. The girls’ team has also suffered some losses, but has the depth to remain competitive.” — Coach David Nordstrom
Bessey. Outlook: For the first time in a very long time, the Cougars are about as vulnerable as they get. Make no mistake, they will be the skiers to beat in Class A, but the customary depth of top-flight skiers isn’t there this season, meaning all of the team’s top skiers will have to be solid in every race. The girls return a bit more power than the boys, who lost four of the top skiers in Maine. Coach’s comment: ”The players who we once counted on to pick up the slack, they’re the top skiers now. Everyone on the team needs to step up and into a leadership role.” — Coach Mark Cyr

Outlook: The Falcons return almost all of last year’s club including Allen, an all-conference player and fourth-leading scorer in the MVC with 15.2 ppg. Also back as starters are seniors Paterson, Roberts and Gallant. Mountain Valley should have a deeper bench this season with Briggs, Armstrong, White and Dolloff all back and ready for bigger roles. The Falcons could be one of the stronger teams in the MVC and should be in the Western B field. Coach’s comment: “I’m excited for this season, but we need to come ready to play each and every night. Good Luck Falcons!
Outlook: If there was ever a way to carbon copy an entire team, the Falcons have managed to do it. One year after climbing back into the state title discussion, the Falcons ought to again be there. The top of the boys’ squad from a year ago returns, and adds a couple of strong young skiers, while the girls will again balance out about the same as a season ago. Coach’s comment: ”We’ll probably be in the top three teams in Class B again, and we’re looking, with a little hard work, to go at least as far as we did last year.” — Coach Seth Fournier
Nate Papsadora
Promising newcomers: Boys: Freshmen — Andrew Boucher, Lance Richard. Girls: Katie Mills.

Gorham (6-5 center); Juniors — Isaac Roberts (6-1 forward), Andrew Child (5-10 guard). Outlook: Mountain Valley employed a high-octane offensive system to win an MVC title and complete an undefeated regular season last year. The Falcons still plan to run the floor and shoot frequently, and it’s a safe bet that Kaubris (16.9 points per game as a junior) will take a majority of those shots. Like its championship football team, MV hoop may go as far as its defense. The Falcons’ goal is to force 20 to 25 turnovers per game. Despite the heavy graduation losses, Mountain Valley expects to be in the hunt for league, regional and state titles. Coach’s comment: “Our goal is to make noise once we get into the playoffs. We want to play for a championship.” — Coach Rick White
Outlook: The boys’ squad this year at Mountain Valley is on the younger side, which leaves plenty of room for growth. A good showing at least year’s MVCs will be hard to replicate, but give them some time. On the girls’ side, there could be an improvement on last year’s finish at MVCs, with a strong returning nucleus. Coach’s comment: “A young boys’ team is in a rebuilding year, but will grow and improve quickly. The girls’ team has an experienced returning trio and will fare well in MVC and state meets.” — Coach Charlie Maddaus

this may be one of his best teams, health permitting. They may get off to a slow start as several football players recover from nagging injuries. The Falcons return two state champions (Ryan Burgess and Josh Thornton) and three state runners-up. Magoon has been plagued by injuries, but should see the podium if he stays healthy. Bradley was a Mid-State League champ as a sophomore before spending last year at Skowhegan. He is recovering from a shoulder injury and probably won’t wrestle until toward the end of the season. Coach’s comment: “If we stay healthy, I think we should be up there at least in the top three in the state.” — Coach Gary Dolloff

Outlook: Knapp, a recent Dirigo and UMF graduate, becomes the Roadrunners’ third different coach in four years. He inherits a team that is thin with varsity experience and graduated one of the MVC’s top players in Barker. Hupper has the skill to emerge as a go-to player. He also represents much of Mt. Abram’s size. Knapp, who is new to coaching at this level after working as an official during college, has emphasized the importance of doing the little things right in hopes of making what would seem a big jump into Western Class C contention. Coach’s comment: ”If we work hard and focus on the details, we have an opportunity to turn the program around. We have a group of individuals hungry for success.” — Coach Trevis Knapp
Tyler Hupper Outlook: The Roadrunners return 10 regulars from last year, including eight sophomores. Mt. Abram was young and in a lot of ball games, but its inexperience showed as the team struggled to finish off with wins. The Roadrunners are a little more seasoned and can see the difference in their confidence and skills a year later. Mt. Abram will still be a young club but could be a team on the rise as this group matures and gains momentum. Coach’s comment: “I don’t think the win-loss record was a good indication. We were pretty competitive. We’ve just got to take that next big step to be more competitive, and then take that next big step and show them how to win games.” — Coach Doug Lisherness

Oak Hill Coach: Jared Browne (second year) Last year’s record: 7-11 Returning letter winners: Seniors — Cam Morin (6-2 guard), Brian Bradstreet (6-0 guard); Sophomore — Trever Samson (6-0 guard). Key losses: Tim Levesque, Kyle Emmons, Ben Foss, Jake Samson. Promising newcomers: Seniors — Cody Provost (6-3 forward), Tanner Lessard (6-0 guard); Junior — Eric Lapointe (5-9 guard), Jamiel Kidd (5-8
Outlook: The boys’ numbers have dropped off from prior years and the ‘Runners are in rebuilding mode, with only McFarland returning, and just enough boys to count in a race returning. Banahan will be a solid addition as a freshman to help lead the team. The girls can be competitive again, despite two huge losses. Yet another Luce, Elise, will hit the slopes this season, and along with Listowich should help make up for the graduation losses. Coach’s comment: “Overall, I think the girls can be competitive in Class B, and we should be able to ski close to last year’s level or better. The boys’ team has had the numbers drop, but we have a group that we can start to build with and adding some depth as we go along, will only help us more in the future.” — Coach Bob Luce

Brittany Stuard. Outlook: Another year, and another good crop of skiers at Mt. Abram. With minimal losses in terms of numbers, and a good influx of skiers, the Roadrunners may be on their way to helping the school win a team title, at least on the girls’ side. The boys are younger, without a senior, but that will allow the skiers this year to grow as a unit over two full seasons. Coach’s comment: “This is a real good bunch of kids. they really enjoy each others’ company, and they all really enjoy skiing.” Holly Thomas — Coach Buzz Bean
Browne believes this year’s group could meet or exceed those accomplishments. Cam Morin is a three-year starter and will be the go-to player offensively. Bradstreet, in his second year as a co-captain, moves to point guard. The Raiders welcome some intriguing newcomers, including football standout Provost, who sat out the last two basketball seasons, and Kidd, a Deering transfer who has never played organized basketball but has opened eyes in practice. The Raiders should be a factor in the crowded midpack of KVAC Class B. Coach’s comment: “With so many young players and players who have not played much varsity basketball, a lot of teaching still needs to take place. Once everything clicks, I think we will be a team that is contending for a postseason spot.” Trever Samson — Coach Jared Browne
Outlook: Sabine was an all-conference post player last year, averaging 18 points and 12 rebounds. The Raiders also return eight others that saw action last year including starters Goulet, Beaulieu. Roberts and Lehotay. There’s enough talent and experience to keep the Raiders competitive and chasing a playoff berth that has barely eluded them the last two seasons. Coach’s comment: “ We should have a competitive group with all returning starters but most of the top teams in the league from last year return a lot as well. Our starters for this year are not set with great competition going on nightly for a few spots.” Marissa Caskin — Coach Tom Morong
Outlook: The Raiders’ numbers are low but Bouchard is “cautiously optimistic” about being a factor in Class B. Morrill was a state champion as a sophomore but was plagued by injuries last year. He should establish a new school record for victories, while Wells and Hamm are approaching 100 wins each. Madore, Hamm and Wells are defending regional champions, while Madore and Wells were state runners-up. Coach’s comment: “Tournament-wise, we’ve got 10 kids that can score at pretty much any tournament on our schedule.” — Coach Shane Bouchard Nick Wells

Outlook: Once a tournament fixture and separated by three years from its last Class C championship, Winthrop basically is starting over. The Ramblers have only 15 players in the entire program. Gordon is the lone returning starter. Conant, Castonguay, Luce and Barter have enjoyed success in football, and Pelkey hopes that experience and their senior leadership will pay dividends. Key losses: Michelle Lough (forward), Katie Michelson (forward), Kelsey Ouellette (guard), Alex Veilleux (guard). Outlook: The Ramblers lost some regulars, including Ouellette, an all-conference pick. Winthrop doesn’t have great size but should be solid defensively. Scott is a proven ballhandler and force in the backcourt and could help lead the offense. Nason showed promise in the post last year. The Ramblers should still be a solid club but will need a number of players stepping into larger roles. Outlook: The Hawks squeaked into the playoffs a year ago, and with a healthy batch of returning players, they could do themselves one better and get in with an exclamation point. The team’s success will ride on how well it plays under a new coach, and with a rebuilt back end. Coach’s comment: “We expect to make the playoffs.” — Coach Andy Dube

Promising newcomers: Senior — George Seaman (6-3 forward/center); Sophomore — Josh Adams (6-2 forward); Freshmen — David Bachelder (6-0 forward), C.J. Oyler (5-7 guard), Thomas Clinch (5-7 guard). Outlook: Having lost only one senior from last year’s team, the Lakers should be a factor in the EWC and Western Class D races. Rangeley has adjusted to a new coaching staff last year and committed to the summer and offseason programs. Hall and White deliver size, while Sargent’s experience leads a deep backcourt. Rangeley appears likely to end its recent tournament drought. Coach’s comment: ”I am looking for us to make a solid run in the league and get back to the Augusta Civic Center. We are going to have to play solid basketball for 18 games, because Class D basketball is that competitive.” — Coach Matt Clark
Coach: Bill Flynn (fifth year) Last year’s record: 12-13 Returning letter winners: Jose Garcia, Levi Lincoln, Ian Choi, Kyle Bernier. Key losses: Mason Lopez, Jean Baptiste, Clebert Marcelin, Jordan Wade. Promising newcomers: Bobby Coleman, Christian Gumbs, Jerimee Moses. Outlook: Hebron has a strong core of returning players and newcomers. The players have a strong commitment to hard work. Hebron has moved to the C division for New England prep schools and will see many new opponents. The team hopes to come together and make a strong run at the New England playoffs.
RANGELEY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Coach: Heidi Deery (17th year) Last year’s record: 14-7, lost in Western D final Returning letter winners: Seniors — Sierra Machacos (5-6 guard) Allie Hammond (5-6 guard); Junior — Chantal Carrier (5-10 forward/center), Emily Carrier (5-11 guard/ forward), Lexi Letarte (5-9 forward/center), Rebecca Walton (5-4 guard); Sophomores — Abby Abbott (5-9 guard/forward), Jenney Abbott (5-10 forward/center)); Freshman - Tori Letarte (5-7 guard) Promising newcomers: Eighth grade — Taylor Esty (5-10 guard/forward), Seve C. Deery-DeRaps (5-8 guard). Key Losses: Alanna Lauter (guard), Olivia Decelles (guard), Sandra Campbell (guard) Outlook: The Lakers didn’t graduate anyone from last year’s team that reached the regional final, but Rangeley lost four guards to either injury or relocation. One of those lost included Hammond, an all-conference guard and the team’s top scorer. She’s out for the year with a knee injury. The Lakers have ample size in the post and will need the guards to adjust to larger roles. Losing Hammond is a blow, but this club started the year 0-4 last year and bounced back to reach the regional final. There’s still enough talent, experience and resiliency for Rangeley to be a factor in Western D. Coach’s comment: “With a full summer schedule, these players will be able to contribute as the season progresses.” — Coach Heidi Deery

Defense has been his point of emphasis with a Poland team that is young in experience (Nichols and Farrington are the only returning starters) and age. Injuries have kept the Knights below full strength in the preseason. Poland will get to measure its progress quickly. Outlook: With 17 players returning, and 15 of them either juniors or seniors, the Patriotic Knights should be solid this season. Good team speed up front, disciplined defense and strong goaltending will keep them in games. challenge the WMC’s elite. Woodford, Labbe and Benedict were in the top eight at the WMC championship last year. Murphy is looking to improve on a third place in the 55 hurdles and fifth in the high jump. Lobley is looking to defend her conference 400 title, while Turton (200 and 400) and Gile are rising stars. Coach’s comment: “We have a key number of retrnees and a very strong group of upperclassmen to provide leadership, with some promising new faces.” — Coach Kristin Ross
and a wealth of newcomers unaccustomed to the varsity level. Still, Morong sees great potential in this young squad and is excited about the promise they’ve shown. The team is fast and athletic and willing to work hard. The Knights have some balance in terms of shooting and handling the ball, and can play at different paces. Emily Bolduc and Mehieux are expected to join veterans Seeley, Copp and Mocciola in the starting lineup, while Theriault is another young player that could play a significant role. Coach’s comment: “While we acknowledge the bumps in the road we will have with being so young and with all the changes surrounding our program, the most important change is in the girls’ mindset. We believe we can not only compete, but succeed at a level that would be a first for our program.” — Coach Andrew Morong

Coach’s comment: “With 18 newcomers on the team this year, how quickly we make adjustments to the style of play and how quickly we can come together as a cohesive unit will determine how successful we can be. There is no shortage of talent at every position, so we definitely have the depth to be a contender. We understand the importance of showing up to the rink every day with the desire to be better than we were the day before. I have a lot of confidence in our leadership. The new players have shown a lot of maturity and I believe they understand what it is going to take. Team chemistry will have to be our main ingredient if we are to be successful and accomplish the goals we have set forth for ourselves. — Coach Matt Plante
