WATERS OF OPPORTUNITY The lake stretches into the horizon, some small ducklings bobbing in the distance. You drift into a shallow cove along the shore and cast a top water lure into the water. As you drag it across the surface, there’s a tug on the line. You pull it again and it’s smashed from below. Your reel screeches as a fight with an aggressive Northern Pike begins. This is only one facet of the unbelievable angling opportunities in the Northwest Territories. This vast place boasts unlimited, clean and unpressured water systems with a wide variety of native fish species. These populations are abundant, healthy, and individuals grow to the outer limits of their size range. Whether you use spinning, baitcasting or flyfishing gear, you’ve got a great chance of landing your personal best.

In the Northwest Territories we take fishing seriously. There are many fly-in lodges with experienced guides and owners that know how to provide the ultimate angling adventure. Sight fishing for Northern Pike. Dead-drifting nymphs for Arctic Grayling. Trolling on a downrigger for behemoth Lake Trout. From the novice fisherman to the veteran outdoorsman, our outfitters will gear you up and show you fishing opportunities you’ve only dreamed of before now.

RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY We realize the incredible fishing resource we have in the Northwest Territories, and we sustain it through several conservation practices. You must use barbless hooks when sportfishing, easily done by pinching or stripping the barbs with pliers before you cast. It’s been proven that this does not affect hook-ups, but merely saves the fish irreparable damage when trying to release them. Catch and release is promoted in the Northwest Territories, although there is no problem keeping trophy fish or enjoying a traditional and delicious shore lunch.

WATERS The Northwest Territories is extremely vast and diverse in its geography, and blessed with epic water systems. Great Bear Lake and Great Slave Lake, the seventh and ninth largest lakes in the world respectively, amount to inland freshwater seas. Thousands of smaller lakes and ponds dot the landscape. Mighty rivers and meandering streams course through the mountains, forests and tundra, as they work their way toward the Arctic Ocean.

BY LAND, WATER OR AIR Some great fishing spots are easily accessible from the highway or by boat, while others are rarely fished and are only accessible by float plane. Making a road trip out of your holiday? Stop right off the highway at one of our many lakes and catch your dinner. All major highway travel routes in the Northwest Territories have campgrounds and day use areas where you can drop a line. So make sure you’ve got your NWT fishing licence and a rod and reel in your vehicle as you drive through all our spectacular regions. If it’s the quiet contemplation of fishing that you’re seeking, book an all-inclusive package with one of our licensed operators and fly in to a remote lake in the wilderness. Your hosts will take care of everything, letting your daily worries dissolve as you relax and fish. Be prepared for lots of furious action, however. If there is one thing that sets fishing in the Northwest Territories apart from most of the world, it’s that it doesn’t require a lot of patience. Get your line in the water and get ready to set the hook. It won’t take long before hungry fish start snapping at your lure. 5

BY AIR Daily jet service is available from Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta to major northern centres via Canadian North, First Air, Air Canada and WestJet. Regional airlines and charter float plane services located in our larger communities – Yellowknife, Hay River, Fort Smith, Fort Simpson, Norman Wells or Inuvik – will take you throughout the territories. Charter access to select lodges is also available through Saskatoon and Winnipeg.

BY ROAD

ED HARDY

You can drive to the Northwest Territories from British Columbia or Alberta. Head north from Edmonton on the Mackenzie Route, Highway 35, or take the Liard Highway from Fort Nelson to Fort Simpson. Follow the Alaska Highway to Dawson City, Yukon and on up the Dempster Highway, across the Arctic Circle to Inuvik. For information on Northwest Territories highway routes, visit nwtparks.ca/explore.

SEASONED OPERATORS Licensed operators in the Northwest Territories are experts at more than just catching fish. Many offer full lodging and meal preparation on their excursions. They’ll be happy to fillet your catch and cook it over an open, crackling fire. Served with traditional bannock, a bottle of wine and a freshly baked apple cobbler, your senses will be indelibly stamped with memories lasting a lifetime.

Most importantly, come prepared for adventure. While the Northwest Territories offers you the chance of catching the big one, our guides will also show you many non-traditional angling opportunities, including flyfishing, sight fishing and fishing the shoals. Teeming populations of species like delicious Lake Whitefish and iridescent sail-finned Arctic Grayling may not be large in size individually, but they bring their own unique qualities to the table and fight spectacularly on light setups. See our Operator Listings for a comprehensive list of where they operate and what they offer. 7

Fly-in lodges range from rustic and cozy, to those equipped with hot tubs and saunas. Operators provide boats, fuel, propane appliances (fridge and stove), lamps, dishes, cutlery, cots, mattresses and woodstoves. Depending on the lodge experience you choose, you may also need to bring additional supplies and your fishing licence. But be aware that when you’re traveling by float plane, your baggage allowance may be limited to 27-41 kg (60-90 lbs) per person. Be sure to ask your operator what you should bring when you board the plane.

STEVE SCHWARZ

WHAT TO BRING Although the summer days are long in the Northwest Territories, the temperatures can fluctuate quite a bit. Seasoned travellers pack t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, a sweater or fleece jacket and a wind and rainproof jacket. A couple of pairs of jeans or canvas trousers, good sneakers or hiking boots, and extra socks are recommended, along with a hat, gloves, bug jacket and insect repellent. Polarized sunglasses will protect your eyes from strong UV rays and reflected glare, and help you see underwater structures and fish. Of course, don’t forget your fishing gear and to purchase a Northwest Territories fishing licence (depending on the area you are visiting, additional licences may be required). Pack enough rods, lures and other tackle to pursue multiple fish species. Some operators will provide gear, tackle and pre-arrange for your licence(s). CAST OF CHARACTERS The Northwest Territories has a wide range of sport fish. The most commonly fished and caught are Northern Pike, Lake Trout and Arctic Grayling, found throughout the Northwest Territories. In the south Pickerel abound, and in the far north Arctic Char show off their vibrant colours. Mountain streams are home to Dolly Varden and Bull Trout, while Lake Whitefish, Inconnu and Burbot inhabit a variety of water systems.

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES GEOGRAPHIC GEROLD SIGL

The Northwest Territories has wonderful angling opportunities and incredible geography. Bottomless lakes flanked by red granite cliffs, winding channels in brackish deltas, rivers undulating through majestic mountains and pristine lakes in the Barrenlands provide stunning backdrops as you wet a line.

GREAT SLAVE LAKE Great Slave Lake is easily accessed from Yellowknife, Hay River, Behchokò, Fort Resolution and Lutselk’e. Spanning 27,200 square kilometres (10,502 square miles) and 614 metres (2,010 feet) deep in some places, it is the ninth-largest lake in the world. Travel along towering cliffs to the East Arm and discover an endless supply of Lake Trout. Explore the North Arm of the lake where monster Northern Pike prowl river deltas and weedy back bays. You will find Arctic Grayling and Inconnu in the deeper parts of the Arm. Bring high-test line and heavyduty tackle to make sure you don’t have to explain the “one that got away”.

PAUL VECSEI

The communities close to Great Slave Lake are home to countless other lakes and operator lodges, only a short floatplane ride away from the capital city of Yellowknife or the hub of Hay River. Whether you go for the day or for the week, you are guaranteed an adventure you won’t forget.

10

THE BARRENLANDS AND GREAT BEAR LAKE The vegetation is low around the lakes in this region straddling the treeline, but the landscape is anything but barren. These clean, cold waters are so clear you can see fish swimming far below the surface. This is home to grizzly bears, muskoxen, wolves, moose, and several herds of Barrenland caribou. In the summer, witness large numbers of birds like ducks, geese, eagles and tundra swans that travel here for the nesting season under the productive midnight sun.

FRONTIER FISHING LODGE

Fish on 160-kilometre (100-mile) lakes such as MacKay Lake, Point Lake, Lac de Gras, Contwoyto and Lac de Savage, where your boat is the only vessel around. Or venture onto a truly big lake, one of the world’s largest – Great Bear Lake. Lake Trout, Arctic Grayling and Northern Pike, as well as Lake Whitefish and Burbot, grow to the outer range of their natural size throughout this region. 11

THE MACKENZIE RIVER AND THE MACKENZIE RIVER DELTA The Mackenzie River is Canada’s largest and longest river system, connecting countless rivers, lakes and streams of the Northwest Territories, as they lead to the Beaufort Sea. The Mackenzie River Delta is home to expansive river systems where you can fish at the foot of mountains. The only thing more remarkable than the fish in these rivers is the landscape you’ll be fishing in. The Mackenzie flows through a vast region of pristine forest and tundra. Keep your fly-rod ready and your hip waders on. These fast moving bodies of water are home primarily to Northern Pike and Arctic Grayling, and localized populations of Dolly Varden, Bull Trout and Pickerel.

PAUL VESCEI

The Northwest Territories has a long and storied tradition of canoeing and kayaking, with its interconnecting waterways and wide range of rapids, waterfalls and spectacular vistas. A number of fishing lodge owners have canoes or kayaks available for guest use. It’s worth trading your fishing rod for a paddle at some point during your trip.

THE BEAUFORT SEA AND ARCTIC OCEAN The Beaufort Sea and Arctic Ocean are hotspots of biological productivity – the Canadian Beaufort encompasses over 833,000 square kilometres (322,000 square miles) off the coast of the Northwest Territories.

Fish are far from the only creatures inhabiting these waters. Keep your eyes peeled while fishing the Arctic coastline. You may see beluga or bowhead whales as a bonus to your fishing adventure.

13

PAUL VESCEI

Nutrients from the Pacific Ocean mix over the continental shelf with the Mackenzie River plume, feeding healthy populations of fish such as Inconnu, Lake Whitefish, Lake Trout and Burbot. Arctic Grayling inhabit certain rivers, and Arctic Char live along the coastline of Sachs Harbour, Ulukhaktok and Paulatuk. High in omega oils and delicately flavoured, Arctic Char are highly sought after. They fetch a hefty price tag in southern restaurants.

SPECIALTIES But size isn’t everything. The Northwest Territories offers all kinds of angling opportunities you won’t find anywhere else. And they’re all waiting for you.

The Northwest Territories is an angler’s paradise. Cold pristine waters of countless lakes and rivers are home to a variety of healthy freshwater fish species. Unstressed populations mean these fish have room and time to grow, producing abundant numbers and trophy-sized monsters.

15

ARCTIC CHAR Salvelinus alpinus

ARCTIC GRAYLING Thymallus Arcticus

Sea-run specimens usually range from 2.3 to 4.5 kg (5-10 lbs), but can reach over 10 kg (22 lbs). They’re found in the Arctic parts of the Northwest Territories, in coastal rivers on the islands and along the mainland coast. Bright silver from the ocean, Arctic Char can turn deep orange during their spawn in freshwater. Slightly smaller Char inhabit some inland lakes. They are best caught while flyfishing with a brightly coloured fly. Or try dead-drifting a small nymph to get their attention.

Members of the Whitefish family, Arctic Grayling are treasured by anglers for the exciting action they provide. These attractive little fish with massive sail-like dorsal fins are found at the mouths of cold clean rivers and make big jumps when hooked. They average from 0.5 to 1 kg (1-2 lbs) and can reach up to 1.5 kg (3 lbs). Try a small spinner or spoon, or use a fly rod with wet or dry flies. Arctic Grayling live throughout the mainland areas of the Northwest Territories. They are particularly common in the Great Slave and Great Bear watersheds as well as the Mackenzie River and its tributaries.

LAKE TROUT Salvelinus namaycush

NORTHERN PIKE Esox lucius

Lake Trout average 4.5 kg (10 lbs), but catches of 18 kg (40 lbs) are common. They grow slowly in our cold waters, taking 12 or more years to mature. Lake Trout are widespread in the Northwest Territories including the Arctic Islands. They inhabit large lakes such as Great Slave and Great Bear where trophies are caught routinely. Lake Trout are found in many shield lakes as well as in deep lakes along the Mackenzie Valley and tundra lakes which extend to the Arctic coast. In early summer, they take large silver spoons, wigglers, large spinners, surface plugs and dry flies. In mid-summer you’ll need jigs, downriggers and buzz bombs.

Reel your lure through the lair of the “water wolf” – the voracious Northern Pike. These top predators will attack anything they can swallow and give you a terrific fight. Often called Jackfish, they average 2-7 kg (5-15 lbs) and many tip the scales at more than 25 kg (55 lbs). Pike are the most consistently caught trophy fish throughout mainland Northwest Territories and prefer warm, slow-moving, weedy water. They’ll hit medium to large spoons and spinners, and will also break surface to strike at flies, streamers and plugs.

ALSO IN OUR WATERS A variety of commonly known fish also live in our cold waters just waiting for a line to nibble on.

BURBOT Lota lota

DOLLY VARDEN Salvelinus confluentus

Often confused with Dolly Varden, Bull Trout are frequently found in the Liard and Mackenzie watersheds, including the numerous rivers and streams that flow out of the Mackenzie Mountains. They average about 1 kg (2 lbs), but can reach up to 3 kg (7 lbs). They are both attractive and aggressive, and will take medium-sized spinners, spoons and flies.

This odd-looking freshwater cod is widespread throughout the Northwest Territories. Although they are well camouflaged and difficult to spot, they’re especially plentiful in the outflows of small streams in the Mackenzie Delta during early winter. If you’re ice fishing, they’ll take artificial lures, jigs and spoons.

Dolly Varden are found in the western Mackenzie Delta in waters along the northern slope of the Richardson Mountains and in the Peel River watershed. They can weigh up to 1.5 kg (3 lbs) and will take imitation roe and pixie spoons. A fine looking fish resembling a Bull Trout, Dolly Varden have a more oval, laterally compressed body and their heads do not dominate their profile.

INCONNU Stenodus leucichthys

Inconnu average from 3-5 kg (7-11 lbs), although individuals weighing 9-14 kg (20-30 lbs) are plentiful, and some reach up to 31 kg (68 lbs). The name is French for “unknown”, but they’re well known in the Mackenzie Delta, where they’re called Coney. They can also be found in Great Slave Lake and tributary streams such as the Slave and Buffalo Rivers where they spawn. As they migrate into the rivers to spawn, gold and silver spoons will attract them. They’ll also take to a drifting rubber-tailed jig.

LAKE WHITEFISH Coregonus clupeaformis

Found throughout the Northwest Territories in lakes, rivers and the channels of the Mackenzie Delta, Lake Whitefish average 1 kg (2 lbs). Great for fly fisherman looking for a new challenge. Whitefish provide a lot of action, but must be hooked gently as they have fragile mouths. They can be taken with small Mepps, small gold spoons and spinners, or bring them in by flyfishing. When they go deep, you can land them with small jigs or sinking flies.

PICKEREL Sander vitreus vitreus

Also known as Walleye, these big fighting Perch can be hooked in the Mackenzie River watershed as far north as the Delta, and the tributary streams and rivers of Great Slave Lake. They can weigh up to 2.3 kg (5 lbs). Streamer flies and spinners are the usual lures of choice for Pickerel, as well as bottom jigging with soft plastics. Prevalent at most Northwest Territories lodges, pickerel are an excellent sportfish that enhance daily catches. Pickerel are a prized eating fish, making it perfect for shore lunches.

BON APPETIT Whether it’s a shore lunch, a campfire fish fry, or a family feast featuring the rewards of your adventure, fish that come from the cold, pristine waters of the Northwest Territories are healthy and great tasting.

If you’d rather just eat them instead of catching them, stop by a local restaurant and experience how the pros prepare local fish.

19

PAUL VECSEI

Lake Trout varies in colour from white to pink and is known for its fine flavor. Northern Pike has firm, lean and fine-textured flesh, terrific straight out of the lake. Inconnu has a rich flavor and is ideal for smoking because of its high oil content. Lake Whitefish is extremely popular because of its sweet, delicate taste. Pickerel is a lean fish, with snowy white flesh that’s among the best eating of northern fish. Burbot, a member of the Cod family, has a taste similar to lobster when it is boiled in salt water or fried in garlic butter. Arctic Char is a prized entrée that combines the great taste of Brook Trout and Salmon.

Epic, infinite and close. The pristine lakes and rivers of the North have remained unchanged for millennia, but the ease and speed with which you can be at the top of the world is astounding. Travelling to the Northwest Territories today is comparable to travelling to any other destination in North America. The capital city, Yellowknife, is only a 90-minute flight from Edmonton and serves as the hub for flights to smaller airports throughout the territory.

PAUL VECSEI

Getting here is easy. The true challenge begins once you enter our countless water systems and test your skills against some of the worlds biggest and most abundant sportfish. It’s the adventure of a lifetime.
