ROSTRUM | NATIONALS CHRONICLE COMMEMORATIVE EDITION 2018 1
From the Editor
Board of Directors
The 2018 National Tournament took us to the sunshine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and it was an incredible week of competition, growth, and friendship. In this special issue of Rostrum, we recap the highlights of the week and celebrate our award winners!
ELECTED MEMBERS
This year more than ever before, we focused on the power of student voices. The stories told by students in classrooms across the country all year are important. It is a privilege to provide students with a platform to make their voices heard at the National Tournament. The messages shared on the final round stage are still at the forefront of my mind weeks later. We honor our phenomenal student finalists, beginning on page 16 for their accomplishments. Whether you joined us in person or were one of more than 70,000 livestream viewers, I hope this week has shown you that in the hands of these students, our future is bright.
Dr. Tommie Lindsey, Jr. Vice President California
We owe much of the week’s success to the hard work and incredible hospitality of our local hosts. I wish to congratulate the entire host committee on a job well done. Meet this incredible group on page 33. Finally, I want to say thank you. Thank you to the coaches, chaperones, and tournament officials who made this week possible. Thank you to the family and friends back home who listened to endless practice speeches, who offered encouragement in the face of difficult losses, and who cheered on our student competitors all year long. Thank you to all those who made sacrifices to allow these students to stand up amongst the best of the best and have their voices heard. The 2019 National Tournament takes us back to Dallas, Texas, and we can’t wait to do it all again! Sincerely,
David Huston Texas Adam Jacobi Wisconsin Jennifer M. Jerome Nebraska Renee C. Motter Colorado
