Welcome to Greater Des Moines for the 2024 National Speech & Debate Tournament!
There are hundreds of individuals who have been involved in working to set up a quality event for students, judges, educators, and supporters of this transformative activity. While we’ve thought about every stakeholder, our primary focus has been thinking through how we create as equitable of an experience as possible for students this summer.
We are proud that we’ve delivered free meals to students in every event. We are excited to have concessions focused on being as affordable as possible, and any profits will be used to support Iowa students attending Nationals in the future. The NSDA has been a truly wonderful partner in these endeavors and has championed this effort through support and encouragement.
Our sincere hope is that everyone at #Nats24 leaves having learned, built community, and found an aspect of Iowa they didn’t expect to enjoy.
Best of luck this week! We are excited to see many of you again in 2025 for the centennial, where we intend to learn from this experience and create an even better Nationals for our beloved community.
Steven Schappaugh, Chair Local Host Steering Committee
INDIGENOUS PEOPLES ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
As we experience the National Speech & Debate Tournament from Greater Des Moines, Iowa, it is important to acknowledge the displaced indigenous people who are this land’s original stewards. We acknowledge that the place we now call Iowa is the ancestral home of the Ioway, for which Iowa is named. Des Moines is also the ancestral home to the Oceti, Sakowin, Meskwaki, Sauk, and other indigenous peoples who have passed through at various times. Today, we thank the indigenous people who are making essential contributions to Iowa and to speech and debate communities. Specifically, we want to recognize and thank the Indigenous Persons Coaches’ Caucus for their guidance and leadership. The NSDA commits to continuing to learn. We will intentionally work to meet the unique needs of all indigenous people in this activity.
MISSION
The National Speech & Debate Association connects, supports, and inspires a diverse community committed to empowering students through speech and debate.
CORE VALUES
VISION
We envision a world in which every school provides speech and debate programs to foster each student’s communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creative skills.
EQUITY STATEMENT
The National Speech & Debate Association is committed to modeling and fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion for all speech and debate communities.
We are continuously transforming our organization to reflect and operationalize the values of equity, integrity, respect, leadership, and service.
We will take responsibility.
We will heed, learn, and evolve.
We will work conscientiously to model and foster an inclusive and equitable speech and debate experience for all.
HARASSMENT AND DISCRIMINATION POLICY
The National Speech & Debate Association is committed to providing its participants, judges, coaches, and staff the opportunity to pursue excellence in their endeavors. This opportunity can exist only when each member of our community is assured an atmosphere of mutual respect. The NSDA prohibits all forms of harassment and discrimination. Accordingly, all forms of harassment and discrimination, whether written or oral, based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, marital status, citizenship, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by any applicable federal, state, or local law are prohibited, whether committed by participants, judges, coaches, or observers. Individuals who are found to have violated this policy will be subject to the full range of sanctions, up to and including removal from the tournament premises.
CODE OF HONOR
The Code of Honor articulates our values and establishes standards for NSDA participation. Participating in the National Tournament is a privilege, and we ask all attendees to honor that privilege by modeling behavior that best represents ourselves, our schools, and our districts by:
• embracing competition with fairness and civility, and without bias or prejudice;
• honoring all participants’ right to articulate diverse perspectives and ideologies while also respecting the tournament’s guidelines, rules, and procedures; and
• maintaining an atmosphere of respect in all tournament venues and competition spaces so as not to compromise any student’s experience.
“As a student or coach member of the National Speech & Debate Association, I pledge to uphold the highest standards of humility, equity, integrity, respect, leadership, and service in pursuit of excellence.”
HUMILITY: A member does not regard oneself more highly than others. Regardless of a person’s level of success, an individual always looks beyond oneself to appreciate the inherent value of others.
EQUITY: A member respects individuals and their individual differences as well as fosters equity, diversity, and inclusion. A member promotes empowerment for people from all backgrounds, including race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and ability.
INTEGRITY: A member is honest, ethical, and adheres to the competition and conduct rules of the organization. A member follows the NSDA discrimination and harassment policy and abides by the rules of their schools, tournaments, and localities.
RESPECT: A member demonstrates civil discourse in their interactions with others. A member maintains and contributes to a safe space and welcoming environment for all.
LEADERSHIP: A member is aware their words and actions influence others. A member commits to thoughtful and meaningful words and actions that reflect NSDA core values.
SERVICE: A member exercises their talents to provide service to peers, community, and the activity. At all times a member is prepared to work constructively to improve the lives of others.

MAKE-UP REGISTRATION
The last registration opportunity after this will be Monday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at the Iowa Events Center in Room 311.
Over the years, our focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion has evolved to reflect our community’s breadth of identities and ideologies. This focus warrants new opportunities to support our coaches and teams by providing space for networking, mentorship, and relationship development, as well as ensuring productive, streamlined communication. This also includes the need for an effective reporting structure to document the concerns of our stakeholders and provide recommendations for the national office to consider. In that vein, we are proud to introduce the NSDA Coaches’ Network. The Coaches’ Network brings together the seven existing coaches’ caucuses with three newly-created interest groups designed to address unique barriers coaches face from the viewpoint of the schools and teams they serve. Students greatly improved in their debate skills as the Big Questions tournament progressed. The students really had fun with it and got into the debate. It was nice for me as their teacher and coach to see improvement in their skills.

Finalists are interviewed by an esteemed panel of educators during the National Speech & Debate Tournament. The 2024 National Student of the Year will be announced Friday, June 21 during the National Tournament Awards Assembly at 6:30 p.m. CT. Diamond Awards reflect excellence and longevity in the activity. A coach’s first diamond is earned when they receive 15,000 points since achieving the degree of merit (25 points). Five years must pass and 15,000 points must be earned to receive a second diamond. An additional 30,000 points must be earned and five years must pass for each additional diamond. Learn more at www.speechanddebate.org/coach-recognition.

High school members work alongside the NSDA to support speech and debate programming around the world.
What did the SLC do this year?
• Wrote for Rostrum magazine.
• Created social media content.
• Developed resources.
• Shared their experience and feedback to shape decisions.
How are students selected?
Each NSDA district can nominate one high school student for consideration. Nominees then submit a short video in the spring, and the NSDA team reviews the materials to select the SLC members for the following year.
Learn more about the SLC!

How can I apply?
The nomination form opens in the fall for the 2025-2026 school year. Students and coaches can work together to submit the form for consideration.

The Middle School National Tournament is an open invitational, and all middle school NSDA members are welcome to compete for a chance to be named a middle school national champion! The online registration deadline was May 15, 2024. THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS
JOIN US
An adult from each middle school team should stop by in-person registration to pick up your school’s materials and ask any questions! Teams arriving early in the week should consider checking out some high school rounds as a learning experience. We recommend teams drive to the competition venue before competition begins to become familiar with the daily route and expected travel times.
