WHAT IS BIG QUESTIONS? Big Questions is a debate format in which high school and middle school students will grapple with complex worldview questions. They debate both sides of a topic determined at the beginning of the school year. Schools are eligible to earn thousands of dollars by facilitating Big Questions debates. This past year, thousands of students across the country competed in Big Questions debate.
FORMAT AND STRUCTURE Big Questions is an accessible debate format that can be added to your tournament, held during your classroom period, or even done internally among your team.
S U P P O RT E D BY T H E
The Big Questions format involves two opposing sides debating a topic concerning the intersection of science, philosophy, and religion. Students can choose to compete individually or with a partner. Competitors are assigned a side, present the case, engage in rebuttal, and participate in question periods.
EARN MEMBERSHIP THROUGH BIG QUESTIONS Due to the demand for the Big Questions grant, only NSDA members will be eligible to receive funding. If you currently are a non-member school, you can use part of your Big Questions grant to cover the cost of membership!

From the Tournament Director This tournament was the first of its kind in the 95 years of our organization’s history. In the midst of a global pandemic, the 2020 National Tournament moved online and teams across the country adapted to a new challenge and exceeded all expectations. Despite the online tournament’s success, I will admit I missed being with you all in person. I missed the excitement in the room as Mr. Sheaff announces “MAY THE DOORS BE CLOSED” and a final round begins. I missed seeing the celebrations from students and coaches as postings go up. I missed seeing the looks on our students’ faces as they step onto the final round stage for the first, or last, time. I missed seeing the connections, the reunions, and the new friendships formed. Even though the competition went on, I missed these things because, at the core, community is such a huge part of who we are and what we do. We hear from alumni decades after their time in speech and debate has ended that the friendships formed in this activity have lasted a lifetime. But what this week has also shown me, is that our community is resilient. You came together online, supporting each other, rooting for each other, following along, and staying connected. So I hope that’s what we take from this experience—that even once your team is no longer in the same squad room every day, when the season ends or students graduate—this community and the skills students learn here are permanent. In this special issue of Rostrum, we recap the highlights of the 2020 National Tournament and celebrate our award winners! Whether you joined us for competition, tuned in to one of the many livestreams, or are just flipping through these pages, I hope you take a minute to celebrate the power of student voices and meet our student award winners beginning on page 14. We owe much of the week’s success to the hard work of our incredible team of volunteers and tournament officials, and to the coaches, communities, and families who provided advice and encouragement to our student competitors all year long. Without your support, none of this would be possible. The 2021 National Tournament takes us to the home city of the NSDA national office in Des Moines, Iowa. I hope to see you there! Sincerely,
Board of Directors

Middle school students across the country recorded entries for the 2020 Middle School Speech Challenge, presented by Summit Debate. Students chose one or more events from a list of 13 options, including Declamation, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Informative Speaking, Original Oratory, Poetry, Program Oral Interpretation, Storytelling, Prose, Prepared Mixed Extemporaneous Speaking, and Prepared Prompt Speaking, as well as two new events created specially for this format. In the Pro Con Challenge, students wrote and delivered a 3-5 minute affirmative case and a 3-5 minute negative case on the National Tournament topic for Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, or Policy. In the Congressional Debate Authorship Challenge, competitors selected two pieces of legislation from the High School National Docket and constructed two authorship speeches 3-5 minutes in length. Rounds were judged asynchronously in early June and top students were featured in a special showcase on our website!

Note: A correction in computer calculations of the debate portion of the school awards has resulted in a change in the official school awards for the National Tournament. The computer system designed to calculate the school awards mistakenly counted "round zero" of LD, PF, and CX as round one, which negatively affected the calculations. The correct list appears here. All schools recognized during the awards ceremony who had any eligible debate points are still being honored with a school award. The organization believes that no eligible school should lose recognition, but that the organization should, to the best of its ability, recognize school achievement at an appropriate level that reflects the adjustments that were made. The National Speech & Debate Association takes pride in honoring students, coaches, and schools at the highest level. We sincerely apologize for the error.

LET’S EVOLVE. IT’S BEEN WAY TOO LONG IN THIS COUNTRY THAT WE HAVE PRACTICED SKILLS OF DENIAL AND DELUSION AROUND RACE. RACE MATTERS. RACE MATTERS EVERY DAY, ALL THE TIME, FROM THE VERY FIRST MOMENT WHEN WE BREATHE AIR INTO THE SOCIETY, WE ARE BREATHING RACIALIZED AIR. AND THIS AIR WILL NOT CHANGE BY US ACTING LIKE IT DOES NOT EXIST. THIS AIR WILL NOT CHANGE BY US FIGHTING ONE ANOTHER, DENYING THE REALITY OF RACISM IN OUR SOCIETY. AND SO IF I CAN URGE US TO DO ONE THING, THAT IS DISCOVER HOW RACE PLAYS OUT IN EACH AND EVERY ONE OF OUR LIVES. AND IN DOING SO WE WILL ENTER INTO THAT NEW REALITY. WE CAN’T ERADICATE RACISM WITHOUT DEALING WITH RACE.
