WHAT IS BIG QUESTIONS?
Big Questions is a debate format in which high school and middle school students will grapple with complex worldview questions. They debate both sides of a topic determined at the beginning of the school year. Schools are eligible to earn thousands of dollars by facilitating Big Questions debates. VIRTUAL EVENTS ARE WELCOME!
FORMAT AND STRUCTURE
Big Questions is an accessible debate format that can be added to your tournament, held during your classroom period, or even done internally amongst your team.
The Big Questions format involves two opposing sides debating a topic concerning the intersection of science, philosophy, and religion. Students can choose to compete individually or with a partner. Competitors are assigned a side, present the case, engage in rebuttal, and participate in question periods.

From the Tournament Director
The 2021 National Tournament was a celebration of the power of student voices and the strength of our speech and debate community.
This year’s tournament was different in a number of ways. We gathered online again for the largest event in our organization’s 96 year history, with 6,671 students competing in the National Tournament and 925 students competing in the Middle School Speech Challenge. This record-breaking participation was due in part to the online format allowing all schools competing in districts to enter two non-qualifying students who attended districts in pre-recorded supplemental events, including two new events, the Pro Con Challenge and Original Spoken Word Poetry.
For the first time, students were permitted to enter in both asynchronous and live Duo divisions based on their strengths and their area’s COVID-19 restrictions.
Much was different, but a few things always remain true about the National Tournament. It offered a chance for our communities to come together, learn, and lift each other up. Student voices were heard and celebrated. Dreams came true as we named our national champions.
Whether it was in an online room of four or a livestream watched by thousands, the messages, arguments, and perspectives shared during the tournament reached new audiences and expanded viewpoints.
In this special issue of Rostrum, we recap the highlights of the 2021 National Tournament and celebrate our award winners! Whether you joined us for competition, tuned in to one of the many livestreams, or are just flipping through these pages, I hope you take a moment to celebrate the power of student voices and meet our student award winners beginning on page 14.
We owe much of the week’s success to the hard work of our incredible team of volunteers and tournament officials, and to the coaches, communities, and families who provided advice and support to our student competitors all year long. Without your efforts, none of this would be possible.
The 2022 National Tournament takes us back to the south in Louisville, Kentucky. I hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
J. Scott Wunn Executive Director National Speech & Debate Association
