WHAT IS BIG QUESTIONS? Big Questions is a debate format designed to open students’ minds and encourage them to engage in life discussion that may not align with their previously held beliefs. Whether or not students change their opinion, the rich experience of this debate event will advance their knowledge, comfort, and interest in learning more about the subject matter based on the intersection of science and philosophy.

FORMAT AND STRUCTURE Big Questions Debate is a debate format that allows students to debate with a partner or as an individual. Debates may be one-on-one, two-on-two, or two-onone. Topics last all year and concern the intersection of science, philosophy, and religion. Students are assigned a side of the topic before each round and present cases, engage in rebuttal and refutation, and participate in a question period. Often, members of the public are recruited to judge and observe this event.

From the Tournament Director

The 2022 National Tournament returned in person for an incredible week of competition and connection in Louisville, Kentucky. This year’s tournament offered more pathways to participation than any prior year. The Last-Chance Qualifier offered students who did not qualify through their district tournament a chance to make it to Nationals in their main event. The Online Supplemental Events National Tournament gave students a chance to be named national champions by competing from home. Additional in-person supplemental entries allowed each school that competed in districts the opportunity to enter up to two students for in-person supplemental competition in Louisville. In total, 6,425 students participated across the National Tournament series. With the ongoing coronavirus, the tournament faced unique challenges like vaccine verification, masking requirements, and increased security. It will be a year that stands out in the history books. Because of the cooperation and commitment of our community, we were able to more safely bring the biggest stage in speech and debate back in person. We extend our sincere gratitude to all attendees who made this possible, but especially the students, coaches, judges, parents, chaperones, and tournament officials who spent the week with us. It was both incredibly powerful and reinvigorating to witness students bravely sharing their stories all week. We watched months and years of hard work culminate in what for many was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The tournament is always a moving reminder of how the skills students learn in speech and debate empower them to be changemakers, advocates, and future leaders of our world. But after two years of online competition, the power of student voices was more evident, and important, than ever. In this special issue of Rostrum, we recap the highlights of the week and celebrate our award winners! The 2023 National Tournament will take us back to Phoenix, Arizona, for the first time since 1996. I hope to see you there!

2022 National Tournament Online Supplemental Events

For the first time, we offered an online supplemental events portion of the National Tournament. In light of the lingering impact of the coronavirus pandemic, any student who qualified for the National Tournament in a main event but declined their spot was eligible to enter online supplemental events. Plus, each school also had the opportunity to enter up to two students who competed at districts but did not qualify to attend the National Tournament into online supplemental events. Students chose from live debate events (Congressional Debate and Extemp Debate) and asynchronous speech events (Prose, Poetry, Storytelling, Prepared Prompt, Expository, Prepared Commentary, Pro Con Challenge, and Original Spoken Word Poetry.) Competition was held online June 2-4 and we honored our online supplemental event champions with a virtual awards ceremony on Saturday evening.

Each year, thousands of high school students compete in a week-long competition to determine the most prestigious title in high school academics: national champion.

ROSTRUM | NATIONALS CHRONICLE COMMEMORATIVE EDITION 2022 23

 The National Speech & Debate Tournament marks the capstone of speech and debate activities for more than 140,000 members across the country. To attend, students must qualify in a main event at one of the Association’s 112 district tournaments, through one of our eight international qualifying programs, or be selected by their school to compete in supplemental events. The National Debate & Speech Tournament has been held across the country since 1931, and today is the largest academic competition in the world.

“Every year, our national champions prove that students who participate in speech and debate have a superpower that they can use to change the world,” said Executive Director J. Scott Wunn. “We can’t wait to learn what comes next for these future leaders.”

THE CIRCLE OF CHAMPIONS REPRESENTS THE BEST OF THE BEST IN OUR ACTIVITY. Congratulations to our 2022 National Champions!
