INSPIRE
STUDENTS WITH MEANINGFUL DEBATES THROUGH BIG QUESTIONS!
WHAT IS BIG QUESTIONS?
Big Questions is a debate format designed to open students’ minds and encourage them to engage in life discussion that may not align with their previously held beliefs. Whether or not students change their opinion, the rich experience of this debate event will advance their knowledge, comfort, and interest in learning more about the subject matter based on the intersection of science and philosophy.
Students greatly improved in their debate skills as the Big Questions tournament progressed. The students really had fun with it and got into the debate. It was nice for me as their teacher and coach to see improvement in their skills.

From the Tournament Director
The 2023 National Speech & Debate Tournament brought the heat to Phoenix/Mesa, Arizona, marking the return of in-person competition for middle school students following a three-year hiatus. In addition, every member high school was able to enter up to two students to compete in supplemental events at Nationals, with more than 900 students joining us for supplemental-only competition. Overall, this year’s tournament was the largest to date!
THE 2023 NATIONAL TOURNAMENT BY THE NUMBERS
• 1,489 schools
• 6,716 student competitors
• 11,500 rounds of competition
• 97,197 livestream views and counting!
In this special issue of Rostrum, we share highlights from the week and honor our award winners. Amid the many celebrations, we also pause to remember two colleagues who passed away suddenly in June. Our hearts go out to the friends and families of Timothy Sheaff (Iowa) and Gary Zuehls (Wisconsin). We share brief tributes on page 18. As we grapple with their loss, we steady ourselves and look toward the future. The NSDA is embarking on a strategic realignment process leading up to our 100th anniversary in 2025, and we’re excited to kick off our yearlong Centennial Celebration as we host the 2024 National Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. We hope you will join us as we commemorate 100 years! Learn more about how you can get involved on page 38.
Our members often share how speech and debate creates a sense of belonging—a sense of place. As I told this year’s finalists, “This is OUR house. This is the house that YOUR voices built.” We extend our appreciation to all attendees who make the National Tournament possible every summer, and we especially thank the students, coaches, alumni, parents, administrators, and supporters of the NSDA who continue to provide speech and debate opportunities year-round. Thank you for providing the foundation for this house built by student voices.
Sincerely,
J. Scott Wunn Executive Director National Speech & Debate Association

IN MEMORIAM The Voice of the National Tournament
We are saddened by the passing of longtime NSDA awards emcee Timothy Sheaff. Tim was a Hall of Fame member and legendary five-diamond coach, whose over 30-year-long career brought competitive success at the local, regional, and national level. Tim is best known for his devoted service to speech and debate. Tim served on the NSDA Board of Directors for 12 years and on the Iowa District Committee for several years. Tim also prided himself on mentoring countless new coaches during his tenure. Tim was a part of the Iowa local hosts preparing to host the 2024 and 2025 National Tournaments.
His service to the community shined most as emcee for the final rounds and awards ceremonies for nearly 20 years at the National Tournament. During that time, he introduced more than 2,200 judges and celebrated the accomplishments of almost 5,000 individual student competitors.
For Tim, speech and debate was a family affair. His six children were highly successful speech and debate competitors. All have followed their father’s lead and served as judges, coaches, and National Tournament volunteers.
Tim’s voice, his mentorship, and his leadership will be greatly missed. We plan to share a longer article honoring Tim’s legacy in the 2023 November/ December issue of Rostrum.
IN MEMORIAM
Tribute to a Trophy Shop Teammate
Gary Zuehls passed away unexpectedly at his home in Princeton, Wisconsin, on Friday, June 30, 2023, at the age of 52.
Gary was born in Ripon, Wisconsin, He grew up in Princeton, graduating from Princeton High School in 1989. For more than 30 years, he worked for Zuehls Heating and Air Conditioning as a certified technician and eventually ran the business.
In early 2023, Gary joined the NSDA as a part-time Trophy Shop Associate. He traveled to the National Tournament in Phoenix/Mesa, Arizona, where he assisted in the assembly of thousands of middle school and high school awards. Trophy Shop Manager Chad Wagner says of his friend and colleague, “We realized very quickly that Gary was the missing puzzle piece in the Trophy Shop. Gary always made sure everyone around him had everything they needed and would immediately step in any time he knew someone needed help.”
Gary loved golfing, the Green Bay Packers, watching all sporting events, and traveling. He loved the simple times and good friends. While our time with Gary at the NSDA was brief, we quickly knew him to be a kind-hearted and dedicated soul. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.

THE CIRCLE OF CHAMPIONS REPRESENTS THE BEST OF THE BEST IN OUR ACTIVITY. Congratulations to our 2023 National Champions!
The National Speech & Debate Tournament marks the capstone of speech and debate activities for more than 140,000 members across the country. To attend, students must qualify in a main event at one of the Association’s 111 district tournaments, through one of our eight international qualifying programs, during the Last-Chance Qualifier online tournament, or be selected by their school to compete in supplemental events. The student competitors represent the best in their events across the United States and the globe.
The National Debate & Speech Tournament has been held across the country since 1931, and today is the largest academic competition in the world. More than 6,000 high school students compete in a week-long competition to determine the most prestigious title in high school academics: national champion.
