We’re excited to welcome you to Phoenix/Mesa, Arizona, for the 2023 National Speech & Debate Tournament!
This year, nearly 8,000 middle and high school students will compete for the chance to have their message heard in front of thousands—using the power of their words for change. With 23 different competitive events, the National Tournament is the pinnacle of public speaking for speech and debate competitors around the globe. For nearly 100 years, the National Speech & Debate Association has built a platform for youth voices that has honed the skills of actors, politicians, and our country’s leaders.
The AZ NSDA District Committee owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Andi Fourlis, MPS Superintendent, and the entire Mesa Public Schools District family for their support in this endeavor. We could not have made this happen without their involvement.
We would also like to thank our coaches for welcoming the challenge of hosting Nationals, and a special thank you to Marco Dominguez, Nick Leonardi, Erin Long, Norm Rumsey, Daniel Waks, and Jim Welty for serving in leadership roles this week.
While we hope you enjoy your time in beautiful Arizona, please remember to be cautious outdoors in the heat, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Your health and safety is our primary concern.
— Your Local Host Committee

As we travel throughout Phoenix and Mesa, Arizona, for the National Speech & Debate Tournament, it is important to acknowledge the displaced Indigenous People who are this land’s original stewards. We acknowledge that the place we now call Arizona is the ancestral home of more than 20 Indigenous tribes and that the sites of the 2023 National Tournament sit on the stolen land of the ancestral homes and territories of the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and Piipaash (Maricopa). We recognize that our presence here today is the result of the on-going exclusions and erasure of Indigenous people. Today, history continues to be written; we thank the Indigenous People who are making essential contributions to Arizona and to speech and debate communities. Specifically, we want to recognize and thank Indigenous People, such as the Indigenous Persons Coaches’ Caucus, for their guidance and leadership. The NSDA commits to continuing to learn; we will intentionally work to meet the unique needs of all Indigenous People in this activity.
The National Speech & Debate Association connects, supports, and inspires a diverse community committed to empowering students through speech and debate.
We envision a world in which every school provides speech and debate programs to foster each student’s communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creative skills.
The National Speech & Debate Association is committed to modeling and fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion for all speech and debate communities.
We are continuously transforming our organization to reflect and operationalize the values of equity, integrity, respect, leadership, and service.
We will take responsibility.
We will heed, learn, and evolve.
We will work conscientiously to model and foster an inclusive and equitable speech and debate experience for all.
The National Speech & Debate Association is committed to providing its participants, judges, coaches, and staff the opportunity to pursue excellence in their endeavors. This opportunity can exist only when each member of our community is assured an atmosphere of mutual respect. The NSDA prohibits all forms of harassment and discrimination. Accordingly, all forms of harassment and discrimination, whether written or oral, based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, marital status, citizenship, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by any applicable federal, state, or local law are prohibited, whether committed by participants, judges, coaches, or observers. Individuals who are found to have violated this policy will be subject to the full range of sanctions, up to and including removal from the tournament premises.
“As a student or coach member of the National Speech & Debate Association, I pledge to uphold the highest standards of humility, equity, integrity, respect, leadership, and service in pursuit of excellence.”
HUMILITY: A member does not regard oneself more highly than others. Regardless of a person’s level of success, an individual always looks beyond oneself to appreciate the inherent value of others.
EQUITY: A member respects individuals and their individual differences as well as fosters equity, diversity, and inclusion. A member promotes empowerment for people from all backgrounds, including race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and ability.
INTEGRITY: A member is honest, ethical, and adheres to the competition and conduct rules of the organization. A member follows the NSDA discrimination and harassment policy and abides by the rules of their schools, tournaments, and localities.
RESPECT: A member demonstrates civil discourse in their interactions with others. A member maintains and contributes to a safe space and welcoming environment for all.
LEADERSHIP: A member is aware their words and actions influence others. A member commits to thoughtful and meaningful words and actions that reflect NSDA core values.
SERVICE: A member exercises their talents to provide service to peers, community, and the activity. At all times a member is prepared to work constructively to improve the lives of others.

• A Tournament Office Manager is someone who, via the Tournament Office, attempts to provide important information to attendees and helps to resolve issues that may arise throughout the course of the tournament.
• Belonging and Inclusion Advocates provide a first point of contact for attendees with inquiries related to harassment and discrimination at the tournament.
• Adjudication Panelists are responsible for gathering all relevant data associated with certain formal protests assigned by the National Tournament Director, interviewing the protesting and protested parties, and rendering a final decision to uphold or decline the protest and determine the appropriate penalties, if applicable. Decisions are final and may not be appealed.
• The National Tournament Director and Assistant National Tournament Director serve as first referee on all rules and procedure related items. They issue rulings, serve as advisers to the Adjudication Panelists and Tournament Office Managers, and are the head administrators of the National Tournament. All rule and procedural decisions are final and may not be appealed.

Diamond Awards reflect excellence and longevity in the activity. A coach’s first diamond is earned when they receive 15,000 points since achieving the degree of merit (25 points). Five years must pass and 15,000 points must be earned to receive a second diamond. An additional 30,000 points must be earned and five years must pass for each additional diamond. Learn more at www.speechanddebate.org/coach-recognition.
A special honor conferred by the NSDA is the Don Crabtree Distinguished Service Award. A gold key is granted to a coach member for 20 citations, and a plaque is given for the first 50 citations and each multiple of 50. Milestone accomplishments of 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th honors are recognized during the Donus D. Roberts Diamond Assembly on Thursday, June 15 at 7:00 p.m. MT. My favorite thing about Jim was that he always did the right thing for kids... Jim LIVED for the kids— and not just his kids, ALL kids.
— MEGAN WEST
He loved old country music; he was a bowler; his consumption of Diet Coke was immeasurable. His legacy is in all the kids and coaches he made better... by being Jim.
— LISA MILLER
Jim literally and figuratively made space for everyone. It was what he did... James Wakefield made space for countless others.
— JACOB ABRAHAM
He was endlessly patient. I most remember his ability to be both sardonically hilarious and equally vulnerable and sweet. The world is a less colorful place without him.
— CRISTINA CUEVAS
His commitment to everything he did was out of passion: the art of debate, the growth of programs, his care of students, and his compassion toward his friends and colleagues.
— SARAH BEAUCHAMP
When I was thrown into the world of debate, Jim was my mentor. He took it upon himself to take me under his wing and teach me the ropes. But more than my mentor, Jim was my friend.
— JUSTIN WEAVER
Jim was a man who embodied such kindness... all wrapped up in in a gruff, color coordinated exterior. — SUSAN MCGRAW
Jim cared about every child and left a lasting impression... The world lost a little color.
— SARAH BOTSCH-MCGUINNOkamoto
