The dawn of a new V8 Supercars season always brings with it a new set of questions just begging to be answered. At the top end of town, it was a relatively quiet off-season, with all eight of last year’s race winners returning with the same team and sponsor packages that they enjoyed in 2011. Of those to switch teams, the most attention will no doubt be on Lee Holdsworth, who moves to Stone Brothers Racing’s IRWIN-backed Ford after six seasons at Garry Rogers Motorsport. Holdsworth is a previous podium finisher at the Clipsal 500, and heads to Adelaide with three test days at three different circuits (Morgan Park, Sandown and Queensland Raceway) under his belt. How competitively the Holdsworth/SBR combination can come out of the blocks in Adelaide will be something to look out for. The new relationships forged within the #4 team will be well and truly put to the test on Friday, where the teams face four 30 minute practice sessions, a 20 minute qualifying and, potentially, a top 10 shootout as well. Outside of the Saturday format to be used at Sandown in September, it’ll be the busiest day of the season, and one where organisation and clear communication are paramount. The fortunes of new Ford Performance Racing recruit David Reynolds and Garry Rogers Motorsport’s French import Alexandre Premat will also be of particular interest. Reynolds has the potential to be at the front from the get go, while Premat will need to keep his own expectations in check as he learns the car and the circuit. The biggest question of all, of course, asks if anyone can stand up and challenge TeamVodafone across the season. Garth Tander has run toe-to-toe with Jamie Whincup in Adelaide in recent years, but the Toll Holden Racing Team has continually failed to produce the track-to-track consistency needed to contend for the title. Ford Performance Racing, Kelly Racing, Stone Brothers Racing and Brad Jones Racing also won races in 2011, and while the factory Ford team isn’t openly talking up its chances this year, the addition of Reynolds to the squad could well be the final push that the #5 and #6 teams need in order to start winning on a consistent basis. While not all of the year’s questions will be answered this weekend, Whincup’s three titles have all come after completely dominating the opening event. A victory for the TeamVodafone driver on Sunday would be an ominous sign to say the least.

The Co John Bowe knows what it takes to run at the front of the V8 Supercars field. The 1995 Australian Touring Car Championship and current Touring Car Masters driver has one of the best ‘racing brains’ in Australia. Who better, then, to analyse the 2012 V8 Supercars Championship contenders? Speedcafe.com news editor Grant Rowley spoke with Bowe about the six drivers who he believes will contend for this year’s championship.
Jamie Whincup JB says: “Jamie can be beaten in 2012, but it will take an amazing effort from the driver and team that does. When you have the sort of success that Jamie has had, it breeds more confidence. It would be a brave man to bet against him this year. Logic tells me that Jamie will be this year’s champion. It will take a special effort from someone to beat this combination.”
Craig Lowndes JB says: “Craig has proven he can still win. He is an awesome driver. If the marbles roll his way, he will do it. He’s a fearsome racer, a terrific guy, but it will require an element of luck for Craig to win the championship. Always, in a long championship like this, there’s some degree of luck, and in the last few years, Craig hasn’t had that. I really think Craig can win – he is certainly capable.”
Mark Winterbottom JB says: “He is successful, very talented, and personally, I’d like to see him win it. I like

ontenders Mark. He is a very ‘normal’ human being and he deserves to win the V8 Supercars Championship. Mark was placed under some pressure by his team-mate Will Davison last year, but I think he handled that very well. And if you want to have a nice summer holiday, you go and win the last race of the year, which Mark achieved. Unfortunately, he went and broke his leg, but from all reports, he has recovered and will be as strong as ever.”
Garth Tander JB says: “Garth Tander is in this list because he is driving for the iconic Holden Racing Team and he gets results sometimes when the machinery doesn’t allow it. It’s as simple as that. He will always graft out a result, and that’s why he is a champion of the sport. Garth’s chances of winning this year’s championship will depend on how much the Holden Racing Team has lifted its game. I was very impressed with the speed they showed at the end
of last year, and I think everyone there is refocused. There was a time when they were an arrogant bunch of people, but I don’t think that’s the case anymore ...”
Will Davison JB says: “Will has a very fast team-mate (Mark Winterbottom), and he’ll need to match him to have a genuine chance. Will is massively dedicated to being the best racing car driver he can, and I see that as a bonus for the team – like Triple Eight. The one thing that both these teams have going for them is that not every team has this luxury of two great drivers.” James Courtney JB says: “I wouldn’t rule James Courtney out of championship contention. He has won a championship before. He knows how to do it and he knows what it takes. One of James’ key strengths is that he won’t wilt under pressure. He had his troubles at the start of last year, but it was always going to be a big call to go to
‘Garth Tander’s Team.’ He went from a car that had very different characteristics. He’s had a year, he understands it all, and above all else, he is gifted.”

Under Pressure While John Bowe has seen the heights of success, he has also seen the lows, and he knows what pressure can do to race drivers. This year’s V8 Supercars Championship will see a number of drivers that simply need to perform. According to Bowe, the six drivers listed below are all capable of winning races – maybe even the championship – but for a number of different reasons, they will be under the microscope from the start of the season... Shane van Gisbergen JB says: “For Shane, I don’t know if he can win the title yet. He’s obviously very impressive. Shane is a fantastic driver, but he has a new fast team-mate (Lee Holdsworth) and, you can’t forget Tim Slade who is still on the rise. Shane has been fast, but it is very different when you have your team-mates breathing down your neck. He will be tested this year.”

It takes some time to get to know what they like!” Todd Kelly JB says: “Todd’s results in the past few years do not reflect what we know he can do. He is only young still, but I think he will have his work cut out for him – running his own team, being a factory team and all the things that come with that. He has a good bunch of people around him, but it’s a big business now. Kelly Racing has a manufacturer involved, and it is going to
Steven Johnson JB says: “Steve grew up around me. He is like a little brother to me and his natural gift to drive a race car is equal to anybody out there. The issue that will present itself this year for Steve and DJR is the expanded team. Running four cars is difficult, and I feel that his results will be a reflection on how well they run their team. Four cars can be done, but it is difficult. DJR is a family team and Steve is very close to it all – he is close to his mum and dad. I think it’s great that these kind of relationships still exist in the sport, but that itself won’t get them results.”

Michael Caruso JB says: “From the outside, I was a little disappointed with Michael’s performances last year. I understand that they were running a development chassis, which played its part in his results. All Michael needs to do this year is worry about himself and his own performance. Yes, he’s now the most experienced driver in the team, and yes that comes with some pressure, but at the end of the day, it means nothing. All he has do is go fast. If he goes fast, everyone is happy. If he doesn’t go fast, no one is happy. It’s that simple.” Alexandre Premat JB says: “Garry Rogers is a ‘free wheeler’. He does things which are unconventional, and god bless him for doing so. Alex won’t make a massive impact, but if he does, he is more talented than what we already know. The big advantage for Alex will be that when Car of the Future comes in, he’ll
be right in the box seat. The new car will resemble what he has driven in the past.” Russell Ingall JB says: “I think Russell will surprise people this year. He won’t win the championship, but most people have written him off. Russell is a terrific racer – he’s never been a good qualifier, so that does handicap him, but he is now in a team that is strategically very good. The Walkinshaw guys will be able to pull things out that will make him a surprise. My bet is that he won’t want to retire at the end of this year, because he’ll have half a reasonable year.”

Circuit Description: The former Formula One venue is renowned for being one of the best street circuits in the world. Shortened from its Grand Prix length by 700 metres, the circuit is very busy from inside the cockpit and, apart from the run down the back straight, gives rivers very few opportunities to relax. The circuit featured major resurfacing work for 2009 as well as new pit lane facilities. The Clipsal 500 Adelaide was first held in 1999 (under the name Sensational Adelaide 500), while the GP-length circuit hosted an American Le Mans Series race on New Years’ Eve in 2000.

Ford Performance Racing Technical Director Campbell Little explains what to look out for across the 2012 Clipsal 500 weekend. Fuel Strategy Adelaide is a really tight event on fuel, as making it home on just two stops requires Safety Car interventions. Something we saw on multiple occasions last year was the Safety Car appearing around the edge of the fuel window, and for whatever reason being held out long enough to give those who stopped early a ‘get out of jail free card’.
Tyres Adelaide has traditionally been one of the easiest tracks on tyres. Last year we saw Jamie Whincup enjoy positive degradation on Saturday - he just kept getting faster as the stints went on.

Congestion Congestion is a big issue in Adelaide, both in qualifying and in the pitlane. The 20 minute qualifying sessions are obviously crucial, and we saw a fair bit of craziness last year. Later in the season the drivers seemed to get a lot better at keeping up a reasonable pace on their first out lap, so at least the lead guys didn’t run into the tail of the field on their first hot laps. Hopefully that’ll carry into the new season. We can all have up to three green tyre runs in the 20 minute qualifying sessions, but there’s not time to do many laps on each set, so traffic will play a big part, no doubt. The pitlane in Adelaide is fairly short, which works well in qualifying in terms of minimising time in the pits, but then hurts in the race. Pitlane congestion is a big issue, especially considering the small fuel windows. It always makes for some interesting exits.
Car strength Adelaide and Bathurst have traditionally been the hardest two tracks in the series in terms of loadings on the car. With the way they changed the kerbs last year, you can now add Homebush into that mix as well. Last year in Adelaide we saw a lot of bent dampers, simply due to the high damper speeds seen across the kerbs. It’ll be interesting to see how they treat the exit of Turn 7 this year, in terms of going over the kerbing to get as good a run down the straight as you can. All through the top end of the circuit you’re straddling the exit kerbs and coming off the back of the kerbs with the wheels spinning, which can damage the driveshafts. Most teams have the rear end of their cars strong enough to deal with it, but Homebush did see some damage from the Watts linkages actually smacking the ground. The street circuit are really tough on the cars.

Jamie Whincup will begin his campaign for a fourth V8 Supercars Championship title on a circuit where his record is unbelievably good. Whincup is the only four-time Clipsal 500 winner. He has taken six individual race wins in Adelaide from just 16 starts, and has not qualified off the front row since 2006. Since his first appearance with Triple Eight Race Engineering in 2006, Whincup has finished in the top five in every single race in Adelaide bar one (Race 2 in 2010, where he was given a late black flag for lose bodywork and finished 18th).
Triple Eight Race Engineering and Walkinshaw Racing have dominated the Clipsal 500 in the recent past. The two organisations have won every single race at the Clipsal 500 since 2006. Triple Eight have seven wins to Walkinshaw Racing’s five – which were achieved by both the Holden Racing Team and the HSV Dealer Team. The last team to win at the Clipsal 500 other than these two remains Stone Brothers Racing in 2005.

The first pole position for Ford in the 2012 V8 Supercars Championship will be a special milestone in the company’s history in the topline of racing in this country. Ford has 199 pole positions in the history of the Australian Touring Car Championship/ V8 Supercars Championship and thus the next pole – which could happen at the Clipsal 500 - will take them to 200. Holden currently leads the way with 219 poles, while Nissan is third on 23.
Two drivers will debut brand new racecars at the Clipsal 500, which are expected to be the last current generation cars built before the introduction of Car of the Future specifications in 2013. Lucky 7 Racing’s Tim Slade will debut a brand new Falcon FG, his firstever brand new V8 Supercar as he begins his fourth season in the V8 Supercars Championship and third driving for Stone Brothers Racing. Tekno Autosport’s Jonathon Webb will debut a brand new Triple Eightbuilt Commodore that was sourced from Paul Morris Motorsports but has yet to compete in a race. The Clipsal 500 will be Webb’s first race in a Holden after spending his entire V8 Supercar career – in both in the V8SC and newly renamed Dunlop Series – in Ford Falcons.
Three drivers are making their Clipsal 500 debut, with one of them making his debut in the V8 Supercars Championship. Twenty-nine-year-old Frenchman Alex Premat, pictured, will drive the #33 Fujitsu Racing/GRM Commodore and makes his first start in the V8 Supercars Championship after a successful past in DTM and Le Mans prototypes. Wilson Security Racing’s David Wall is also making his Clipsal 500 debut but raced in the Dunlop Series last year in Adelaide, finishing ninth. He’s also competed in Adelaide in the Australian GT Championship (including a round win in 2010) and Porsche Carrera Cup. Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport’s Taz Douglas is the third Clipsal 500 debutante. He’s raced in the Dunlop Series in Adelaide three times with a best result of seventh in 2009.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Having won three of the last four V8 Supercars Championships, and five of the last eight races at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide, Jamie Whincup will head into this weekend’s event as the favourite. TeamVodafone’s key driving, engineering and management talent remains in place from its dominant 2011 season, guaranteeing that the Queensland based squad will once again be extremely hard to beat. Craig Lowndes has five wins of his own on the board in Adelaide, but has not seen a victory here since 2006. Car #888 is a potential winner, although qualifying speed hurt Lowndes here last year and will need to improve.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY No race track in Australia suits Garth Tander’s aggressive driving style quite like the Adelaide Parklands. Car #2’s traditionally strong braking and drive traction characteristics have helped Tander and the HRT win three of the last four races here. The fuel economy of the Walkinshaw package has also come to the fore in recent years, and may again prove a key ingredient this weekend. James Courtney was exceptional in the early wet weather laps here in 2011. Whether the factory Holden team can give Courtney a car that compliments his dry weather style remains to be seen however. Meanwhile, Adelaide marks Russell Ingall’s first weekend with Walkinshaw Racing. Seeing the top 10 in either race would be an encouraging first up result for car #66.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY The SBR Falcons have proven largely unconvincing on the streets of Adelaide in recent seasons, and the squad’s beloved soft tyres will again be absent from the event in 2012. Shane van Gisbergen built a strong relationship with race engineer Dave Stewart late last year however, and should be seen as a podium threat regardless. Tim Slade meanwhile has proven more than capable when given the right equipment. Lee Holdsworth will be under more scrutiny than most as he enjoys his first ever race weekend in a Falcon, although it may take time for the former GRM pilot to settle in with his new team and car.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY FPR was the form team in the final few events of the 2011 season, with both Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison showing exceptional speed on the streets of Sydney. Winterbottom has endured a troubled pre-season build up however, having broken his ankle prior to Christmas. A lack of seat time since last year’s finale may test Winterbottom, particularly during the first qualifying session on Friday. Will Davison enters his second year with FPR full of confidence, and is a real threat to take his first win with the team. David Reynolds meanwhile steps into The Bottle-O Falcon this year, and looms as a dark horse, particularly in qualifying.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Rick Kelly was particularly strong in Adelaide last year, and should once again push the top five. The 2006 champion is unlikely to be distracted by the media and fan attention that has followed the announcement of the team’s 2013 Nissan deal. Going on past form, the hard tyre compound and kind-on-tyres nature of the circuit should play into the hands of all four Kelly Racing entries. The challenge for Todd Kelly, Greg Murphy and new recruit Karl Reindler throughout 2012 will be to prove that Kelly Racing is more than just a one-car team. Qualifying in the top half of the field will be an important achievement for any one of the trio.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY The speed that Jason Bright and BJR showed in the middle part of 2011 seemed to disappear as the season progressed, while a late season injury for the former Bathurst winner left the #8 entry just 16th in the points standings. The Bright/BJR combination has struggled in both previous Adelaide encounters, leaving expectations relatively low for this weekend. Qualifying in the top 10 is far from a given. Fabian Coulthard’s arrival will add a new element to the team, but is unlikely to produce noteworthy results first-up. Series rookie David Wall will have even more modest expectations, having failed to show ‘main game worthy’ speed in last year’s Development Series.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY DJR struggled for speed on both compounds of tyre during the second half of 2011, and it remains to be seen whether expanding to a four car operation will help or hinder the situation. The word ‘superteam’ has been attached to this outfit by various media outlets, but the lack of a true ‘superstar’ driver is highly apparent. That said, Steven Johnson has runs on the board here, James Moffat will be a stronger force in his second season, and Dean Fiore will undoubtedly benefit from being in a multi-car team. Expect fellow new recruit Steve Owen to be the pick of the bunch this weekend, though.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY There have been big changes at Tekno Autosport over the off-season, with a switch from Triple Eight Ford to Triple Eight Holden chassis, and the addition of a second car for Michael Patrizi. Jonathon Webb largely struggled last year while running as a single car team, and will benefit from once again having a team-mate to push him along. The former Development Series Champion was highly impressive on Sunday here last year, but qualifying may again be a weakness. Patrizi has plenty to prove in his return to the series. Completing a trouble-free weekend first-up in Adelaide will be a good start for the West Australian, who showed speed last year in the Carrera Cup.

The Frenchman has enjoyed just two test days in V8 Supercars prior to Clipsal, and while undoubtedly a talent, will need more time to get up to speed. Controlling Premat’s own expectations will be vital, as Adelaide’s concrete will quickly bite anyone who pushes too hard. Michael Caruso meanwhile will need to step up this year after the exit of Lee Holdsworth from the team. With Holdsworth having proven particularly fast here in previous years, anything outside the top 10 will be a disappointing result for Caruso.
