The move to a mixed tyre format for the majority of events in this year’s V8 Supercars Championship is a classic example of regulation changes having largely unintended consequences. Clearly, the intention behind stipulating that both compounds of tyre must be used during races was to open up the strategy options for teams. Different strategies mean that cars can be relatively stronger or weaker than their opposition at various points in the race, thus creating passing and, just as importantly, an extra level of intrigue. What we’ve seen at both Symmons Plains and Hamilton however has been almost identical strategies throughout the field, with all 28 runners starting on the hard tyres and looking to get rid of them as soon as possible. The result? Races almost entirely driven by fuel economy, which is an outcome almost as unpalatable to the fan base as it is expensive for the teams. Rather coincidentally, this weekend at Barbagallo will see both a tightening of the fuel saving regulations and a slight shift in emphasis away from economy. While the practice of manipulating fuel regulators and fuel pumps during races has now been outlawed, the unique nature of Barbagallo’s surface means that starting on the hards and pitting as soon as your fuel window opens may not be such a wise idea anyway. Rain, hail or shine, it’s going to be an interesting weekend in the west. Green means go!

It’s a circuit that I know reasonably well. I did a bit of Formula Vee and Formula Ford there, so it’s close to my heart.
REINDLER: I’d be kidding myself if I said there was no trepidation.
Before the crash, we’d had a couple of good rounds. We were fast at Abu Dhabi and we were improving all the time. To be brought down to zero again was a tough thing. For me, to get back in the car was my number one priority.
I try and put the memories of the accident to the back of my mind, but I’m sure it will be the topic of conversation over the weekend. It’s going to be hard to avoid, but I’ll just do the best I can to try not to think

It probably took me a few rounds before I felt like my head was in the right space, but I had a couple of good rounds after that, including qualifying fifth at Queensland Raceway.

I really haven’t had an issue since, but I have changed teams and I’m in a completely new environment to get used to.
just yet. I still feel we are on the right track for a good result, if we piece everything together. SPEEDCAFE: So you can see some light at the end of this tunnel?
This weekend should go quite well, except for the weather. They have forecast rain, which is just unheard of in Perth at the moment, so that could make it quite interesting. Who knows what the weekend will bring ...
REINDLER: Absolutely. I’ve been working very closely with (performance director) Tony Dowe at Kellys. We’re starting to get some good structure and processes over a weekend.
SPEEDCAFE: You had a couple of extremely good qualifying performances last year, but so far this year, you’ve been down the order. Does it feel like it is taking a bit of time to get in sync with the team?
At the start of the year, each car was very individual and we weren’t collaborating. Now, we’re starting to get better systems in place which is good to see. Every time we go out on track, it is getting better.
REINDLER: It’s a little bit like that. the car is extremely different to drive, compared to the BJR car from last year. I just don’t feel we are on top of the car 100 percent yet.
SPEEDCAFE: One more thing on your fireball crash last year. When you see it being replayed on TV, do you say “Hey Mum, I’m on TV!” or do you think “Holy s***, how did I survive that?”
At every given round, you need to have everything fall in place and tick all the boxes, and that hasn’t happened yet. We’ve had a couple of dramas along the way, plus some teething problems with a lot of new people learning their new positions in the team. The team has also taken on a lot this year, and people talk about that, but I don’t believe that is what’s affecting our results. The team has got the two car Development Series team this year, plus the build of its Car of the Future Nissans. There is a lot happening, but I feel we are improving every time we go out on the track, even though not everything has fallen into place
REINDLER: The latter! I look at that and think “I’m lucky, I’m so lucky.” At the time, I didn’t realise how bad it was. I first saw the footage for the first time on Sunday night and I shouldn’t say exactly what I said – there were a few choice words! I’m just incredibly lucky. When I saw the footage, I was in the burns unit in the hospital, and for me, one of the biggest memories I have is seeing the other people in there who were in far worse condition than me. They all have a great positive outlook and it was refreshing to see.
I’m taking (burns specialist) Fiona Wood for a hot lap on Friday at the track. She did an amazing job with me in the operations after the accident and to get me back on track quickly. The hot lap is the least I can do to say thanks for all the effort and work she put in for looking after me.

Described as the first phase in a multimillion-dollar government-funded
redevelopment of the venue, the track now boats a new pitlane. Located on the inside of the circuit, the lane features 30 garages and a three-tier administration building. The pitlane entry configuration is yet to be
confirmed, with V8 Supercars still to decide whether it will utilise the entry lane before or after the final corner. Regardless, drivers will not rejoin the circuit until after the exit of Turn 1 - which looks

Races 7/8/9 - Barbagallo I Tech Preview
TECH PREVIEW with
CAMPBELL LITTLE
It’s obviously going to be a different looking Barbagallo Raceway this weekend with the introduction of the new pit building. The most interesting thing for us is how the new pitlane, which has moved to the inside of the circuit, will work in terms of entry and exits. We’ve seen nothing official yet, so it’s hard to comment, but there are two different entries that can be used - one before the final corner and one after. If V8 Supercars choose to go with the latter, it’ll be very entertaining. You’d have to be over to the right on the way down the hill, because if someone out-braked you down the inside you’d be really stuck. Getting out of the pits will be a bit of fun too. There won’t be a blend line, so the merging process on the way up the hill could cause a bit of aggravation. The location of the new pit building will no doubt take away some of the pit straight shenanigans though. We’ve seen a lot of people turned sideways or moving over onto the grass on the inside in the past, but they won’t have anywhere to go this year, so they’ll have to be a little more thoughtful when making moves. Weather We’re expecting a few showers throughout the weekend, based on the early reports. We haven’t had a wet race over there since
2008, but even then it was wet before the race and dried out. I’ve been there a long time ago in a storm and it was very slippery, so it could be a real challenge for everyone if the conditions are bad. We talk about the track surface a lot with Barbagallo because it’s very coarse and rather unique. It’s hard to say that the surface is degrading a lot year-on-year though. We qualified on hards there last year and went significantly faster than we did during our previous visit in 2009, and the hard tyre race pace was up as well. Whether the tyres changed or whether the track temperature played a part in that was hard to tell. We’ll have to see what the construction traffic has done to the circuit before we do too much else this year. Strategy If we do get dry races, Barbagallo represents more of an interesting strategic challenge than we saw at Symmons Plans or Hamilton. It’s one of the events where starting on softs is a genuine option. Like the Grand Prix, there’s only one stop in each race, and history shows that Safety Cars are fairly infrequent at Barbagallo, which makes the soft-hard strategy much more appealing. The Safety
15
Car average is 1 in 129 laps, so if it sticks to that we’ll only see one Safety Car over the weekend. It’s one of the higher degradation surfaces that we run on, so the tyres will really dictate the strategy more than fuel. We saw Craig Lowndes there last year pitting at the start of the window and really paying the price late in the race. Most people will get 34 or 35 laps out of a tank, so theoretically if you were stretching it you could stop as early as Lap 12, which gives 38 laps on a set of softs. Lowndes attempted a 34 lap stint last year and he led the race for a while, but was two seconds a lap off the pace at the end. It’s a big trade-off between track position and late-race pace Whether or not they’ve changed the tyre since last year I’m not sure. A lot of people seem to be getting a lot more durability out of their softs than 12 months ago, so we’ll see how that translates at Barbagallo. Qualifying The qualifying format has been tweaked again this year. Last year we had a single 20 minute session on Sunday morning, where
your fastest and second fastest times set the grid for Races 8 and 9 respectively. This year there are two 15 minutes session which will be run back-to-back. We’ve got to run one session on hards and one on softs, so that’ll be a bit of fun. Last year there were two or three cars that stood out, but once you got past fourth, only a few tenths covered the rest of the field. It’s always been a circuit where you get one or two laps out of your tyres and then it’s all over red rover, so there really is no room for error. We’ll get to do two runs of two or three timed laps with not much time to fiddle in between. The first run in particular can be a real mess in terms of traffic - traditionally it’s even worse than Tassie because of the way cars coming out of the pits mess you up. There is no off-line going up the hill as people are switching from one side of the circuit to the other, so you’re in the way whether you want to be or not. That really makes you want to stay in sequence with what everyone else is doing. There’ll be plenty of complaining going on after the two sessions, you can guarantee that.

V8 Supercars Championship leader Will Davison is on a roll heading into the event that is sponsored by his car backer – Tradingpost. The Ford pilot is the only driver in the field to have finished on the podium in all six championship races held so far this year across Adelaide, Symmons Plains and Hamilton. He’s racked up three wins, a second and two third places to give himself a 21-point break over TeamVodafone’s Jamie Whincup. Last year Davison finished third, eighth and 15th in the three races in Perth.
The qualifying format for the Tradingpost Perth Challenge has been modified since last year’s event. The three-race format remains, however there will now be three separate qualifying sessions to determine the grid for each of the races. Last year there was one qualifying session on Sunday morning with the driver’s fastest time determining his grid spot in the first race of the day and his second quickest
giving him his second race grid position. In an added twist, drivers will need to use different tyre compounds in qualifying on Sunday. Hard tyres must be used for qualifying for Race 8, while soft tyres must be used for Race 9 qualifying. The race format will not change, with both hard and soft tyres to be used in each race.
Races 7/8/9 - Barbagallo I Did you know
There is a strong local contingent in the Tradingpost Perth Challenge with four Western Australian drivers in the 2012 line-up. Garth Tander (Holden Racing Team), Dean Fiore (Jim Beam Racing), Karl Reindler (Fair Dinkum Sheds Racing) and Michael Patrizi (Tekno Autosports) will defend ‘home honour’ at Barbagallo Raceway. Patrizi has added reason to celebrate at the event – he’ll turn 28 during practice on Friday May 4. Of the four Western Australians, Fiore remains the only one to still live in his home state.
Looking to make a prediction and pick who will take pole position at Barbagallo? You’d be crazy to go past Jamie Whincup … The three-time V8 Supercars Champion has taken the last four poles straight in Perth. He took pole on Sunday in 2009 and then all three last year (V8 Supercars did not race at Barbagallo in 2010). No other driver has taken four straight poles in Perth, the previous best being three by Peter Brock between 1979 and 1981. Whincup hasn’t qualified off the front row for his last five races at Barbagallo (two in 2009 and three in 2011). He’s also finished in the top four in the last seven races straight in Perth. The streak dates back to beginning in Race 2 in 2008.
Craig Lowndes will rack up an impressive statistic at the Tradingpost Perth Challenge – his 450th ATCC/V8 Supercars Championship race start. The three-time V8 Supercars Champion is due to rack up the number in Race 9 at Barbagallo, which will be the final race on Sunday. Lowndes holds the record for
the most ATCC/V8SC race wins at Barbagallo – 13. He’s finished in the top eight in the last 12 races held at Barbagallo in a streak that began in Race 3, 2006. Lowndes has only missed qualifying in the top 10 once in Perth in 17 qualifying attempts. That gives him a qualifying average of 4.64, impressive across a long time span dating back to 1996.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... TeamVodafone can again be expected to go head-to-head with Ford Performance Racing this weekend on a circuit that has proven particularly good for the Queensland-based team in the past. Between them, Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes have won four of the last five races held here, while the former is on a streak of three consecutive Barbagallo poles. Despite again being edged by FPR, Hamilton provided a large points haul for both TeamVodafone drivers, with Lowndes jumping four places in the standings to fourth as a result. Whincup is a certain contender this weekend, while Lowndes could really shine if it’s wet.

Walkinshaw Racing THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Garth Tander slid to seventh in the standings following his Sunday disaster in Hamilton, and could be in for a tough weekend against the might of FPR and Triple Eight in front of his home crowd. Although Tander took a well deserved pole and podium on Saturday in Hamilton, Barbagallo requires far different characteristics to such a street circuit. A Walkinshaw Racing prepared Commodore has not won at the WA venue since 2007, and despite improving as the weekend progressed, last year proved a major struggle for the team. James Courtney took a season best seventh place finish in the Hamilton opener, although qualifying 17th for both races indicates there’s still plenty of work to be done.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Expect all three SBR Falcons to be in among the top 10 action this weekend. Despite being hampered by poor qualifying performances, Shane van Gisbergen shone here last year charging through the pack with superb tyre life on the typically abrasive surface. Lee Holdsworth did not enjoy a good record at Barbagallo during his time with GRM, but armed with the mix of tyre life and fuel economy currently boasted by SBR, the new recruit is likely to join Van Gisbergen in pushing the FPR/Triple Eight steamroller. For Tim Slade, improved qualifying performance will be required in order to really figure among the results.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... FPR continues to provide emphatic answers to its critics this season, with the team winning four of the season’s first six races. Will Davison scored his first podium with FPR at Barbagallo last year, and returns to the venue having failed to miss the podium at all so far in 2012. Mark Winterbottom meanwhile took his first win of the year last time out in Hamilton, and knows he’s every bit a match for his team-mate if the cars fall his way. FPR endured a horrendous struggle on the soft tyres here last year, but as has been repeatedly proven, 2011 form means nothing when looking at this team.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Kelly Racing has largely failed to fire so far in 2012, leaving the Braeside squad to pray that the forecasted rain comes through this weekend. Save for a second place finish in the opening race of the 2009 event, Barbagallo has not gelled well with Kelly Racing’s set-ups in the past, with last year’s trip to WA one of the worst weekend’s of the team’s season. In dry conditions, top 10 finishes will mark a strong result for either Rick or Todd Kelly this weekend, while Karl Reindler and Greg Murphy - who sit 27th and 28th in the points standings respectively - should have even more modest hopes.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Fabian Coulthard’s form in Hamilton continued to belie that displayed by his two team-mates. The Kiwi currently sits 13 and 18 places further up the championship standings than Jason Bright and David Wall respectively. Qualifying has been Bright’s biggest issue this season, and will need to be improved if anything remotely close to the heights of last year’s Barbagallo campaign - which saw the BOC Commodore take BJR’s maiden race victory - can be achieved. Simply returning to the top 10 would be an encouraging second outing following the team’s pre-Hamilton engineering reshuffle.

Dick Johnson Racing
DJR enjoyed its first positive outing of the season on Saturday in Hamilton, where three of its cars made the top 10 shootout. Steve Owen fared the best of the team’s entries in Race 5 by scoring an impressive sixth position - one of only two Ford runners in the top 10. While Sunday proved frustrating for all four DJR drivers, the team can head to Barbagallo encouraged by its pace at the West Australian venue last year, where Steven Johnson was a genuine top six contender. Both Owen and Johnson should run in the top half of the field.

Tekno Autosports
THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Tekno Autosports may continue to operate without a major sponsor, but Jonathon Webb’s entry will at least enjoy a splash of colour this weekend as the Queensland based squad shows its support for the cancer research charity cycling event Tour de Cure. Webb completed a relatively quiet weekend in Hamilton, where the #19 Commodore failed to show the outright pace that it had three weeks earlier at Symmons Plains. Expect an improved performance this weekend for both Webb and team-mate Michael Patrizi on a circuit that will suit the Triple Eight chassis.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... GRM heads to a traditional bogey circuit in Barbagallo this weekend. The Dandenong-based squad’s Commodores have struggled for grip and tyre life at the 2.42km venue in the past, with neither of its drivers managing to crack the top eight in either qualifying or the races last year. Michael Caruso did score an eigth place finish on Saturday in Hamilton however, and contrary to expectations, has shown better permanent than street circuit form in the formative stages of the season. Top 10 finishes may be too much to ask for either of GRM’s drivers at this circuit, unless rain intervenes. Alexandre Premat heads to WA following a disastrous Hamilton event that included a crash on Saturday and four kerb-hopping penalties on Sunday.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... The now Team Hiflex branded outfit performed above expectations in Hamilton, where Tony D’Alberto proved a genuine top 10 runner. D’Alberto struggled to a best of 20th in the three races at Barbagallo last year, but as with the factory run Ford Performance Racing chassis, 2011 form can largely be forgotten. On that basis, qualifying and racing in the top 15 in WA is a minimum expectation for this team.
#3 Tony D’Alberto Team: Team Hiflex Born: 9 December 1985 V8SC debut: Sandown, 2005 Starts: 128 Wins: 0 Career Highlights: 1st 2007 V8 Supercars Development Series, 6th 2007 Bathurst 1000, 5th 2005 V8 Supercars Development Series, 9th 2011 Bathurst 1000
Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport Base: Nunawading, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Triple Eight Race Engineering Engines: KRE Team principal: Lucas Dumbrell
THE BAGMAN’S SAY... LDM will relish the return to a permanent venue this weekend after the team’s impressive Symmons Plains form failed to translate across the Tasman. Considering the 25th and 26th place qualifying performances in Hamilton, a pair of top 20 finishes provided a reasonable haul of points for Taz Douglas, who sits 23rd in the standings after six races. With his points tally still recovering from a DNF in Adelaide’s season opener, moving into the championship’s top 20 is a realistic short-term target.
