Races 12/13 - Hidden Valley I Introduction
Calling all contenders HIDDEN VALLEY
The V8 Supercars Championship makes its annual trek to the Top End this weekend, where nine teams will again attempt to break the Ford Performance Racing/Triple Eight stranglehold on the 2012 season.
EDITOR: Stefan Bartholomaeus
The two powerhouse squads have shared the victories in the 11 contests held so far, with FPR’s impressive form seeing the factory Ford outfit unbeaten over the last seven races.
DESIGN: Kirstie Fuentes
Recent years at Hidden Valley suggest that this weekend could just be the one where a ‘second-tier’ team breaks through.

Stone Brothers Racing, Kelly Racing, Garry Rogers Motorsport and the Holden Racing Team have all joined FPR and Triple Eight in taking a race win at Hidden Valley over the last four years.

Of those four operations, it’s undoubtedly SBR that looms as the team most likely to step up this weekend. Drivers Shane van Gisbergen, Lee Holdsworth and Tim Slade may have scored just one podium between them so far in 2012, but the trio’s consistency sees them sit fifth, sixth and seventh in the standings respectively. Holdsworth and Slade have enjoyed an extended build-up to this weekend’s event, travelling from Adelaide to Darwin by rail on The Ghan. While three days on a train may not sound like the ideal preparation for one of the most demanding meetings on the calendar, the duo’s desire to spend their time reviewing footage of last year’s races, training on a stationary bicycle and generally nattering away about racing indicates that their eyes remain well and truly on the prize. Green means go!

tone Brothers Racing may not have won a race so far in 2012, but the team enters the Skycity Triple Crown at Hidden Valley with its drivers Shane van Gisbergen, Lee Holdsworth and Tim Slade sitting fifth, sixth and seventh in the championship respectively. Speedcafe.com’s Stefan Bartholomaeus spoke to Holdsworth and Slade after the trio arrived in Darwin on The Ghan passenger train. SPEEDCAFE: Boys, first of all, you’ve taken a bit of a different route to Hidden Valley this week. How did you find your three days travelling from Adelaide on The Ghan? TIM SLADE: It’s a great experience and something that a lot of people don’t get to do. It’s certainly one that we can tick off the list. Checking out the end of the Finke Desert Race in Alice Springs was an eye-opener.
Those machines are seriously tough and their drivers and riders are very committed! Obviously exploring the Katherine Gorges by boat was a highlight as well - you don’t see scenery like that every day. LEE HOLDSWORTH: It’s always good to get out and see different things, especially when you can kick back in comfort and let others do the work! Tim brought his bike (bicycle with stationary-stand) onboard as well, so we should point out that it wasn’t all about sitting around and eating! We did a few miles on that, as well as checking out Alice Springs on some mountain bikes. SPEEDCAFE: Moving on to the more serious stuff. Lee, let’s talk about your season so far. A big change to go to SBR after six years with Garry (Garry Rogers Motorsport). You must be pleased to be sitting in the championship’s top six at this point.
HOLDSWORTH: Yeah, so far I’d say I’ve been pretty happy with our season. I probably expected these sort of results, but I didn’t think they’d put me where they have in the championship. Sitting sixth at this stage when I’m not entirely comfortable in the car indicates that there are some good things ahead. I feel there’s a lot more potential in the car, it’s just a matter of tuning it to how I like it. As a team, we’ve started the season with three cars in the top 10, which is a great effort. We need to find a little bit more speed, but I think we’re going in the right direction. SPEEDCAFE: Tim, you’re in a bit of a different
7
situation coming back here for a third year. You scored a couple of podiums last year, but is consistency what you’re really chasing in 2012?
a bit of a weakness for SBR over the years, they’ve chopped and changed a bit, but within my garage it’s certainly a strength.
SLADE: That’s certainly one of the main things that we pinpointed from the last couple of years. There’s no use in being third one week and 13th the next. It’s certainly not going to win you a championship. To do that your bad days have to be 10th rather than 18th.
It’s been good to have Lee come into the team as well. He’s got a lot of experience and won races before driving a different car, so he has been able to pick up on things in our cars that we’ve just learnt to deal with over the years.
For me this year it’s been good to have that continuity with SBR. To have exactly the same bunch of guys around me has been great. Wes (McDougall, race engineer) and I have built a really strong relationship and you never stop learning. Every time we go out on the track we’re trying new things to add to our playbook. I think continuity has been
Overall I’m happy with sitting seventh at the moment. It was awesome to have the sort of pace we did at Phillip Island and to be on the podium again. We’ve had great speed at Hidden Valley over the last couple Continue on page 9 >>

of years too so we’re really excited to get on track this weekend. SPEEDCAFE: The points table certainly indicates that SBR is the third best team right now. If you knew exactly what was needed to make the next step I’m sure you’d do it, but are there specific characteristics in the Triple Eight and FPR cars that you see and think ‘my car needs to be able to do that’. SLADE: Definitely and we’re working pretty hard to try and make our cars quicker, but if it was easy everyone would be doing it. All the ingredients are there, it’s just a case of getting the recipe right. FPR is evidence of that. Triple Eight has been the benchmark team for a long time, but this year something has clicked at FPR and turned it around. HOLDSWORTH: I think everyone achieves their speed in different ways as well. You’re not necessarily saying that we need to do exactly what they’re doing. We’re trying to improve every little area on the car not just to match them but to beat them. Like Tim said, we have all the right ingredients it’s just about getting them all in the bowl and making them set at the right time. It does take time to get it all right, and probably with me coming into the team this year it’s made them try a few different things. Once that settles down a bit and we’ve got a good platform to work from then I think that’s when the results will really come. SLADE: That’s exactly what I touched on before. Lee has only been at one team before, but it was a different team, and this year myself and Shane are able to ask Lee ‘did your Fujitsu car do this here’ and he’ll say ‘no, it shouldn’t be doing that’. So I’ve really found that to be a good thing this year. SPEEDCAFE: So Lee, what have you pointed to as the strengths of the SBR package? Tyre life was a big advantage for them this time last year, but a lot of the other guys seemed to close that gap as the season progressed. HOLDSWORTH: There was definitely a point last year when they had an advantage in terms of soft tyre life. But you’re right, the other teams have caught up. That’s not a case of SBR losing anything,
it’s just everyone else lifting their game. That means we have to find something else to get an advantage again. Tyre life is still a strength, but for me my biggest problem and probably Tim’s as well this year has been front-grip. Having good front-grip, particularly mid-corner allows you to have better tyre life because if you’re having to turn the car with the throttle it hurts the tyre life a lot. That’s probably more of a car set-up thing and just getting the set-up right on the day. But that all comes with knowledge of the car and experience. I’m still learning from Tim and Shane on how to set the car up to last over a race distance, as well as what changes to make in the stops. Sometimes I’ve been reluctant to make a change because I’m not sure how big a difference it will make. That’ll come with time. SPEEDCAFE: Looking to the rest of the year, what will make it a successful season from here? Do you feel you can jag a couple of wins between now and December? SLADE: I don’t have any real particular goal for the year, but last year we were ninth, so if we can finish anywhere ahead of that I think it’ll be a success. But for sure we’re out there chasing that first win as well, and I can’t see why we can’t do it. I think if we can be up there near the top often enough then our turn will come. HOLDSWORTH: My goal coming into this year was top five (in the championship). That’s a pretty high expectation for the first year with a new team, but it’s looking achievable. For me the year is not so much about where we’re running in the championship, it’s about learning more and more with my engineer every time I go out in the car. It’s Brad’s (Wischusen, engineer) first year with the team as well, and we’re learning together at every round. Obviously I want to get a podium with the team as soon as we can, and from there I’d like to think we can get a race win this year. SPEEDCAFE: For you in particular Lee, this year is surely about getting all of the processes and relationships right so that you
can make a real bid for the championship in 2013. The way SBR is set up for the Car of the Future was stated as one of the key reasons you chose to join the team... HOLDSWORTH: Firstly, I want to make the most of the package we’ve got at the moment. I don’t think we need to go throwing potential wins away this year if they’re there to be had. But you’re right, the big picture is that if we learn and build with the team this year, we’ll have a solid platform for 2013. The boys have been working around the clock on the COTF so that we can really take-off next year. This is my seventh full-time year in the class, and I need to start winning races and fighting for championships. The aim all along has been for next year to be that year.

H
idden Valley is quite an interesting race track. A lot of guys like to go there because it presents a variety of challenges. It’s got bumps and hollows, the occasional big kerb and several different corner types. It’s always a good test on brakes. There are big stops at Turns 1 and 4, so by the time you get to the Turn 5 hairpin the brakes are very, very hot, especially if you’re running close to other cars. For a driver it’s quite a good race track, and the weather this time of year seems to thaw out the Victorians, which is nice for them! Strategy Last year we had just one set of soft tyres to use on Sunday, but this year will be running both the hards and softs during the two races, with two sets of softs and one set of hards on Sunday. That format should be a bit more entertaining. I think it’ll be a bit like Perth in terms of giving you the option to go either way with the tyres (starting on softs and finishing on hards or vice versa), particularly on Saturday. We’ve had a fairly low Safety Car frequency up there over
the years. This time we’re going there a little bit later in the year, and traditionally Safety Cars at Hidden Valley are related to grass size! They’ve had a fairly wet wet season, but who knows what it’ll be like until we get there. V8 Supercars have recently been throwing out the competition caution a little to make things entertaining, which may sway people against starting on softs, but I think that anyone starting up the front could do a good job running the softs first. The window for making a pitstop on Saturday is only going to be around 10 laps. You could see people taking it by the horns and coming in as early as Lap 6 or 7, but that’ll very much depend on what they think they can get out of their soft tyres. I don’t see anyone being brave enough to do pit purely based on the fuel window. We didn’t see particularly good soft tyre life from a lot of guys here last year - no one was able to do more than
13
around 18 laps on those tyres. Our (Ford Performance Racing’s) soft tyre life generally wasn’t good last year, but in Darwin we weren’t too far away. The Stone Brothers cars were the strongest up there on the soft tyres, and our cars were probably the best on the hards. Aggression At Phillip Island we saw a lot of aggression, particularly after the Safety Cars. It’s a circuit where it’s very easy to be two seconds off the pace and hold up the cars behind you. That means the only way to get past is to dive-bomb them or start using your bumper. In Darwin we’ve often seen a similar thing. Turn 7 to 13 is really single-file, so seeing a train of cars lined up behind one car is not unusual. We’ve seen some fairly interesting overtaking moves on the approach to Turn 14 and Turn 1, with cars diving down the inside and knocking other people out of the way. That’s always something to look out for.
Pit stacking Pit congestion was an issue that arose again at Phillip Island, but I don’t understand why people rant and rave about cars that are double-stacked. The drivers can’t just disappear in those situations. The only real solution is to make the pitlanes wider. Any regulations they could introduce, like closing the pitlane under Safety Car, will detract from the entertainment and produce artificial results. I’d hate to see them do what they do at the Grand Prix where you can only service one car at a time. That’d take one team car out of the race every time the Safety Car comes out. Likewise the system of closing the pitlane completely under Safety Car would effectively force everyone to stop as soon as their window opens. With the current system, I think what goes around comes around to a certain extent. Sometimes you get held up and sometimes you hold up others. It really is just the way it goes.

ust 29 points covers the top three drivers in the V8 Supercars Championship heading to the Skycity Triple Crown in Darwin. And that is in stark contrast to this time last year … Will Davison holds a 10-point margin over Jamie Whincup with Davison’s Ford Performance Racing teammate Mark Winterbottom only another 19 points further back in third. At the same time last year (after five events and 11 races), Whincup was a massive 262 points in front of Craig Lowndes with third-placed Garth Tander another 47 points further back. That meant a spread of 299 points – virtually an entire weekend – at the same time last year between the top three, meaning the 2012 title race is much, much closer.
T
he Holden Racing Team may have more race wins at Hidden Valley than any other V8 Supercar team (14), but it’s currently stuck in one of its longest winning droughts in some time. The factory Holden team hasn’t won a race since Garth Tander and Nick Percat won last October’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 – a winning drought of some eight months.
I
t’s hard to believe, but reigning V8 Supercar Champion Jamie Whincup has never taken a pole position at Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin – and neither has his TeamVodafone squad! Amazingly, the TeamVodafone driver has qualified on the front row of the grid for five of the last six races in Darwin since 2009 – but has been second on each occasion! Whincup’s qualifying average in Darwin since joining Triple Eight Race Engineering in 2006 sits at 4.55.
Winless so far in 2012, the last time it took this many races for HRT to win an Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship race in a season was 1994, when Peter Brock collected victory in the 13th race (Round 7, Race 1) of the season.

upercheap Auto Racing’s Russell Ingall will line up for his 210th Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship event start at Hidden Valley. The 2005 V8 Supercars champion now moves past Glenn Seton into outright fourth on the all-time list with only John Bowe, Mark Skaife and Peter Brock ahead of ‘The Enforcer’. Ingall is one of only three drivers (Craig Lowndes and Garth Tander are the others) to have competed in each and every Hidden Valley event since the venue joined the V8 Supercars Championship calendar in 1998. Last year Ingall finished fifth in the Sunday race in Darwin, his best race finish at Hidden Valley since 2008.
P
icking a winner at Hidden Valley has proven to be difficult over the last few years with five different teams winning the last five races in the ‘Top End’. Since Garry Rogers Motorsport won on Sunday in 2009, Ford Performance Racing,
TeamVodafone, Jack Daniel’s Racing and Stone Brothers Racing have all won races at Hidden Valley. The Holden Racing Team has won more Hidden Valley races than any other team (14), followed by Perkins Engineering, Stone Brothers Racing and TeamVodafone (five each), Ford
Performance Racing (four), Kmart Racing/HSV Dealer Team (three), Garry Rogers Motorsport (two) and Kelly Racing (one). Adding to the unpredictability, both of last year’s race winners (Rick Kelly and Shane van Gisbergen) started 12th on the grid!

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Jamie Whincup can be expected to resume his titanic battle with Ford Performance Racing at Hidden Valley. The TeamVodafone cars were the class of the field in Sunday’s mixed tyre race here last year, with only a late-race Safety Car robbing Whincup of victory. Qualifying was a weakness for Whincup last-time out at Phillip Island, but one expects that to have been a track-specific issue. Lowndes meanwhile scored a third pole for the season at the Victorian circuit, and spent a recent test day working on his suspect starts. Both drivers should be well and truly in the fight here.

Walkinshaw Racing THE BAGMAN’S SAY... The performance of the #2 Holden Racing Team Commodore has proven the hardest of all to predict so far this season, and anything could again be on the cards this weekend. The Bagman expected Garth Tander to be a serious thorn in the side of FPR and T8 at Phillip Island - a prediction that proved far from the case. Hidden Valley was a disaster for the team last year as all three cars struggled both for one-lap speed and race pace. Russell Ingall and James Courtney have both scored solid midfield finishes in recent races but continue to struggle in qualifying - Ingall only starting inside the top 20 once in the last five races.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Stone Brothers Racing’s have proven highly competitive at Hidden Valley over the last two seasons, with Shane van Gisbergen making the most of a Safety Car to take Sunday’s win last year. Recent form suggests the team will again pose a threat for victory this weekend, although an improvement in qualifying pace will be required to knock off the FPR and T8 juggernaut in a conventional race. THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Ford Performance Racing is the undisputed favourite heading into the weekend on the account of the fact that between them, Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom have won nine of the season’s first 11 races, including the last seven in succession. David Reynolds meanwhile continues to show impressive speed, with the #55 entry leading the opening lap of both Phillip Island encounters. Reynolds will this weekend remain in the chassis that he used at Phillip Island, having claimed to find a speed improvement when stepping back to the older car. THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Rick Kelly took his team to victory on Saturday at Hidden Valley last year, but it’ll take a major turnaround in the team’s 2012 form to see a repeat this weekend. The team has openly admitted that its Nissan Car of the Future program is currently taking up the bulk of its resources, making results during the remainder of this season potentially hard to come by. The squad has been further destabilised with the news that Greg Murphy will miss the next three months with a back injury. Top 10 finishes will be a strong result for either of the Jack Daniel’s backed cars here, while its other two entries should be looking for the top 20.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Jason Bright looms as the biggest dark horse of all in the Top End having shown exceptional qualifying pace over the last two events. Bright has started four of the last five races in the top five, and has backed up that speed with five consecutive top 10 finishes, including a podium in Race 11 at Phillip Island. Team-mate Fabian Coulthard meanwhile had a shocking run in the races at Phillip Island, but has started five of the last six races in the top 10, and can be expected to once again mix it among the top half of the field this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY...
Dick Johnson Racing
Hidden Valley was one of Dick Johnson Racing’s stronger events last year, with Steve Johnson emerging from the late-race carnage to take second in the opening race. The team’s four drivers have scored just four top 10 finishes from the first 11 races this year however, with Johnson himself having recorded a best of just 10th. DJR has been in the news since Phillip Island, with confirmation that Charlie Schwerkolt will take his #18 license from the team next season potentially increasing the pressure on James Moffat for the second half of the year.

Tekno Autosports
THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Tekno Autosports underlined its claim to being a top 10 contender at Phillip Island, with Jonathon Webb taking a pair of impressive seventh place finishes at the Victorian venue. Both Webb and team-mate Michael Patrizi have shown that they can run in the top half of the field in what is clearly high-quality equipment. There is nothing to suggest that the team’s recent form won’t continue this weekend at Hidden Valley.

Garry Rogers Motorsport
THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Hidden Valley has proven to be one of Garry Rogers Motorsport’s stronger circuits in recent years. Lee Holdsworth ran strongly in the team’s #33 car here for much of Sunday’s race last year before a late-race Safety Car ruined his tyre strategy. The Top End circuit is also the scene of Michael Caruso’s only career race win, which came in a mixed tyre race in 2009. Caruso currently sits 13th in the points standings depsite a tough run at Phillip Island, and can be expected to run at least on the heels of the top 10 here. Team-mate Alexandre Premat meanwhile is mired down in 25th in the standings having qualified inside the top 20 just twice so far.

Tony D’Alberto Racing Base: Knoxfield, Victoria Car: Ford Falcon FG Chassis: Ford Performance Racing Engines: Ford Performance Racing Team principal: Al D’Alberto
THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Tony D’Alberto’s up-and-down season continued at Phillip Island, with the team’s customer FPR chassis failing to mirror to the immense pace of the Prodrive-run cars. Twenty-second in the standings doesn’t truly represent the potential in this entry however, with three DNFs having stifled progress. Qualifying in the top half of the field for the first time since Hamilton is likely to be a precondition for a return to top 10 finishes this weekend.
#3 Tony D’Alberto Team: Team Hiflex Born: 9 December 1985 V8SC debut: Sandown, 2005 Starts: 133 Wins: 0 Career Highlights: 1st 2007 V8 Supercars Development Series, 6th 2007 Bathurst 1000, 5th 2005 V8 Supercars Development Series, 9th 2011 Bathurst 1000
Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport Base: Nunawading, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Triple Eight Race Engineering Engines: KRE Team principal: Lucas Dumbrell
THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Taz Douglas heads to Hidden Valley following a return to the top 20 at Phillip Island. After a horrid weekend at Barbagallo, the iSelect Commodore recorded quiet 20th and 18th place results in the two legs of the Phillip Island 300, moving the DVS graduate up to 23rd in the points standings. More visits to the top 20 can surely be the only expectation for this weekend, with the team’s stunning Symmons Plains form now somewhat of a distant memory.
