2018 ARMOR ALL FAN GUIDE

WELCOME FROM ARMOR ALL

Happy New Year race fans! I am not sure about you, but my head is still spinning from the incredible final round of the 2017 Virgin Australia Supercar Championship which was one of the most dramatic in the sport’s history. You simply could not have written the script for the monumental battle between eventual series champion Jamie Whincup and the 2017 Armor All Pole Champion Scott McLaughlin at what was an impressive debut event on the streets of Newcastle. The weekend of racing decided no less than five category champions and has us anticipating even more in 2018 with a Supercars championship round now on the schedule at the Australian Grand Prix and a brand new event at The Bend in South Australia. As we motor into our 13th year of sponsorship of the ARMOR ALL Pole Award, we have now dedicated more than $A1.2 million to the sport through the Supercars and Dunlop Super2 ARMOR ALL Pole Awards. 2018 ARMOR ALL FAN GUIDE

WELCOME FROM SCOTT MCLAUGHLIN

I don’t think there will be too many fans that will forget that final round on the streets of Newcastle in 2017, obviously I won’t. The event had everything that makes this sport so great and while I might not have enjoyed watching Jamie Whincup pick up the championship trophy I learned some valuable lessons which I fully intend to capitalise on in 2018 and beyond. As my famous team co-owner Dick Johnson says “the only thing you get from looking behind you is a crook neck”. So let’s get on with it! DJR Team Penske and the Shell V-Power Racing Team made some massive gains last season and was rewarded with the Supercars teams’ championship along with the outright ARMOR ALL Pole Award. While my name is on the ARMOR ALL trophy, I still consider it a massive team achievement. I was thrilled to accept a record 16 cheques from Paul Blair, mascot Arnie and the ARMOR ALL team through the 2017 season, but I can only produce those results if I have the right equipment underneath me.

our first PIRTEK Enduro Cup and my maiden drivers’ title. I have had a great relationship with Paul Blair and his team for a few seasons now and ARMOR ALL must be applauded for their ongoing support of the sport and for initiatives like the ARMOR ALL Motorsport Fan Guide, which, I must admit, sits in my kit bag all season as a reference guide for all categories of the sport. I can assure you that collecting big plastic cheques at the end of a qualifying session never gets boring and better still, they never bounce! The ARMOR ALL qualifying sessions and Top 10 Shootouts are always a highlight of the weekend at any Supercars event and it will continue to be the case as the level of competition goes from strength to strength. I hope you find the 2018 ARMOR ALL Motorsport Guide, powered by Speedcafe.com as useful as I will and that you enjoy what promises to be a cracking season. Bring it on! Scott McLaughlin 2017 ARMOR ALL Pole Position Champion

We have so many things to look forward to in 2018 as we chase back-to-back team and ARMOR ALL Pole trophies,

2018 ARMOR ALL FAN GUIDE

HISTORY OF THE ARMOR ALL POLE AWARD

The ARMOR ALL Pole Award has become established as a highly sought-after prize as it enters its 13th season. Drivers push the limits in each and every ARMOR ALL Qualifying session in search not just of a favourable starting position for the race, but the pride of being the very fastest car on the circuit. Furthermore, the title of ARMOR ALL Pole Champion, and a $10,000 cheque, is awarded to the driver in each series who hangs it all on the line to take more ARMOR ALL Pole Positions than anyone else throughout the season. In 2017, Scott McLaughlin clinched the ARMOR ALL Pole Champion title in record time. The then-new DJR Team Penske recruit qualified in first position an astonishing 16 times out of 26 races, including a run of seven straight ARMOR ALL Pole Positions during the middle of the season. McLaughlin also became the second New Zealander to win the ARMOR ALL Pole Champion title, a year after countryman Shane van Gisbergen became the first international to do so. He also extended the ARMOR ALL Pole Champion drought of Supercars’ qualifying king, Jamie Whincup. Whincup, who won an unprecedented seventh championship in thrilling fashion in Newcastle last year, holds the all-time record for Supercars/ Australian Touring Car Championship pole positions with 75 in total.

The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver has been crowned the ARMOR ALL Pole Champion six times, but missed out in each of the past two years and will be looking to win back the crown. In the Super2 Series, eventual title winner Todd Hazelwood and his nearest rival Paul Dumbrell were the most prolific ARMOR ALL Pole-sitters, qualifying fastest three times each. Since its inauguration in 2006, Supercar ARMOR ALL Pole Position winners have included Chaz Mostert, Mark Skaife, Garth Tander, Jason Bright, Todd Kelly, James Courtney, Mark Winterbottom, Rick Kelly, Jamie Whincup, Steven Richards, Craig Lowndes, Steven Johnson, Jason Richards, Will Davison, Jason Bargwanna, Lee Holdsworth, Alex Davison, Paul Dumbrell, Greg Murphy, David Reynolds, Shane van Gisbergen, Tim Slade, Fabian Coulthard, Scott McLaughlin, Scott Pye, Cameron Waters, Chris Pither, and Richie Stanaway. Circuit Overview CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION The former Formula 1 venue is renowned for being one of the best street circuits in the world. Shortened from its grand prix length by 700m, the circuit is very busy from inside the cockpit and, apart from the run down the back straight, gives drivers very few opportunities to relax. The Adelaide 500 was first held in 1999. BEST VANTAGE POINT The outside of the notorious Turn 8 allows fans to watch drivers sweep through the fastest corner on the track. 2017 HIGHLIGHT Shane van Gisbergen ran down Scott McLaughlin in the Sunday race and made the move for the race lead on the fourth-last lap.

Circuit Overview CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION A sweeping circuit in the best traditions of fast and flowing European-styled venues, the Albert Park layout is a public road for nearly 360 days a year apart from when the Formula 1 Grand Prix hits town. First held in 1996, the Supercars have raced every year at Albert Park except for 2007 and form a valuable part of the on-track action. The circuit is very smooth, which rewards teams and drivers with well set-up cars. BEST VANTAGE POINT Watching from the mound at Turn 11/Turn 12 sees drivers tackle a challenging high-speed complex. 2017 HIGHLIGHT Chaz Mostert took a drought-breaking race win on the Sunday after Fabian Coulthard blew a tyre while leading.

Circuit Overview CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION Originally designed in 1956, the Phillip Island circuit was re-born for the 1989 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. The fast and flowing venue has been basically unchanged and hosts two international motorcycle events (MotoGP and World Superbikes) and a full program of national events each year. The circuit hosted V8 Supercars’ 500km pre-Bathurst endurance race between 2008 and 2011, before moving to a new format in 2012. The circuit was resurfaced before last year’s visit. BEST VANTAGE POINT Stand at Doohan Corner (Turn 1) to watch the cars drop into the fast sweeper and out towards Southern Loop. 2017 HIGHLIGHT The Saturday race descended into chaos with approximately 17 tyre failures at the fast, high-load Phillip Island circuit.

Circuit Overview CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION Self-billed as ‘The Nation’s Action Track,’ the tight and twisty rural layout features a range of slow corners which combine to make Winton the slowest circuit on the Supercars calendar. Consisting of a total of 12 corners linked by short straights, it was lengthened by a kilometre in 1997. CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION Hidden Valley Raceway is characterised by having one of the longest straights in Australia along with a back section full of kinks, twists, and bumps, and one of the slowest corners in the series. The start/finish straight is 1.1km long with cars reaching speeds of around 270km/h in sixth gear before braking hard for the left-handed Turn 1. The warm conditions mean tyre conservation will be critical to determining the race results. BEST VANTAGE POINT The outside of Turn 10 and Turn 11 is a great spot to see the drivers on the ragged edge.

Circuit Overview CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION The Townsville Street Circuit is a mix of existing streets and a purpose-built road through the Reid Park precinct. Located just south of the Townsville CBD, the circuit winds its way through Reid Park where specially constructed roads form approximately 70 percent of the circuit. Set in a parklands style reminiscent of the Albert Park Street Circuit in Melbourne, the Townsville circuit proved to be a challenge in its inaugural year in 2009 and quickly became a favourite of the drivers. BEST VANTAGE POINT The viewing mound near the back of the pits provides visibility of the tricky run through Turn 7, Turn 8, and Turn 9.

Circuit Overview CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION Queensland Raceway was quickly dubbed the ‘Paperclip’ when it was opened in 1999 because of its six-turn design and lack of elevation. It was resurfaced in 2011 and is the home test circuit for the Queenslandbased teams. Circuit Overview CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION The original 3.93 kilometre Grand Prix circuit was completed in 1990, complying with FIA Category 2 standards, and has hosted a number of major international races, including the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, Supercars Championship and Australian rounds of the A1GP. The layout was renamed the Gardner GP Circuit on October 21, 2013. A favourite amongst riders and drivers alike, the Gardner GP Circuit offers a variety of challenging turns and straights, rewarding the committed. BEST VANTAGE POINT The cars are on the limit going through Moffat Corner (Turn 1), which makes it a good spot to see Supercars going flat-out. 2017 HIGHLIGHT Jamie Whincup became the most prolific ATCC/Supercars Championship race winner when he won for the 106th time on the Sunday.

ABOUT THE PIRTEK ENDURO CUP Entering its sixth season in 2018, the PIRTEK Enduro Cup has become synonymous with the teamwork integral to the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. It adds a heightened significance to the three two-driver endurance events - the Wilson Security Sandown 500, Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and the Gold Coast 600. The two-driver teams accumulate points across the three events with the Champion crowned on the Gold Coast. In 2017, the PIRTEK Enduro Cup broke new ground with first-time winners Chaz Mostert and Steve Owen in the Supercheap Auto Racing Falcon FGX, which also made it the first Ford team to take the title since the Championship-within-a-Championship was inaugurated. PIRTEK Fluid Systems has been an integral supplier of hoses and fittings to Supercars teams for many years and PIRTEK is responsible for keeping much of pitlane on-track - with its product used in the cars, in the garage equipment, by event support crews at the track, in the transporters and back at team workshops. The PIRTEK Enduro Cup Trophy is manufactured by over 400 parts available from the PIRTEK catalogue and was designed and built by renowned Australian automotive artist, James Corbett. In addition to being the PIRTEK Enduro Cup major sponsor, PIRTEK is the Official Hose Supplier to the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship and a proud sponsor of DJR Team Penske. Circuit Overview CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION A fast circuit set around a horse racing track, Sandown requires strong engines for the run up and down the two long straights. The fast esses section at the end of the back straight leading into Dandenong Road Corner is one of the most revered sequences of corners in the championship. The venue has hosted more Australian Touring Car Championship/ Supercars Championship events than any other, and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012. BEST VANTAGE POINT The hill at the end of the Back Straight is the place to watch the drivers negotiate the fast esses. 2017 HIGHLIGHT Cameron Waters and Richie Stanaway drove a faultless race for their first Supercars Championship race win each.

Circuit Overview CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION Originally constructed in 1938 as a scenic tourist drive, Mount Panorama has hosted all types of motorsport over the years, including the current Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and Bathurst 12 Hour (GT) races. The circuit is public road on non-race weekends and has also hosted the Australian Grand Prix in the past. It remains one of the all-time favourite circuits of Supercars drivers and is ranked among the great race tracks of the world. BEST VANTAGE POINT McPhillamy Park offers the perfect view to watch the Supercars flat-out and on the limit. 2017 HIGHLIGHT David Reynolds passed Nick Percat in the final 16 laps to achieve a first Bathurst 1000 win for he and co-driver Luke Youlden as plenty slipped off the road in the desperate dash to the finish.

Circuit Overview CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION The Gold Coast street circuit is a high speed, concrete-lined thrill ride that was shortened for the new-look event in 2010 by around 1.5km. The temporary street track has created carnage in the past, particularly when drivers don’t show the patience required for victory, so the co-drivers at this year’s event will have to tread carefully. BEST VANTAGE POINT The Beach Chicane an awesome spot to watch the cars bounce over the kerbs. 2017 HIGHLIGHT Scott McLaughlin and Alexandre Premat took a stunning comeback win on the Sunday despite starting 13th after a superb stint from the Frenchman and a bold fuel strategy.

Circuit Overview CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION A $6.6 million upgrade saw a new-look Pukekohe Park Raceway return to the Supercars Championship in 2013. A range of works have been undertaken, including the addition of a chicane towards the end of the back straight which extends the circuit marginally from 2.83km to 2.91km. The change does not alter the fast and flowing nature of the circuit, which previously hosted the championship in 2007 prior to a five-year street racing experiment in nearby Hamilton. BEST VANTAGE POINT Standing on the outside at the Mountain Bend is the best place to watch the drivers tackle the fast sweeps onto the Main Straight. 2017 HIGHLIGHT Jamie Whincup held off Scott McLaughlin for an important victory on the Sunday which would set up a tense championship finale.

Circuit Overview CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION Debuting in 2017, the Newcastle East Street Circuit winds through the East End between the Pacific Ocean and the city’s working harbour. BEST VANTAGE POINT Stand next to Shortland Esplanade as the cars snake down the hill towards Newcastle Beach. 2017 HIGHLIGHT The inaugural Newcastle 500 put on perhaps the most thrilling championship finale in history, when Scott McLaughlin fought his way back into a title-winning position, only to lose it again to race winner Jamie Whincup after incurring his third penalty of the race as the chequered flag flew.
