Left and right “The Texas Motor Speedway is very, very fast. It’s very different. It’s a big huge oval, massive crowds... it will be good for the V8s.” These were the words of GM Holden chairman and managing director, American Mike Devereux, at Bathurst last October when asked by the Seven Network what he thought of the V8 Supercars Championship’s upcoming trip to Texas. It might appear cruel to dredge out an old quote from a man that has far more than just V8 Supercars on his plate, but there’s a point here that’s very pertinent on the eve of the Austin 400. Oval track racing, in particular NASCAR, dominates the American psyche. Even to an American that has been the MD of Holden for three years, racing in Texas means wide-open, left-turn action. Period. As good of a product as we know it is, V8 Supercars will be doing well to capture the attention of the locals with its visit to Texas which, of course, will be taking place on the Circuit of the Americas road course in Austin. The first year will most likely attract a respectable crowd made up mostly of hardcore motor racing fans and curious locals, but for the event to be viable in the longer term, it’ll need to be genuinely embraced. Unfortunately, the early signs aren’t brilliant. The involvement of high profile American stars was long touted by many, including the circuit itself, as a must-have to garner local interest. Realistically, it was always a long-shot. The American affiliates of some of V8 Supercars’ biggest supporters, such as Red Bull USA and Chevrolet (Holden), also appear to have been disinterested in the event. Even Australia’s own NASCAR Sprint Cup star, Marcos Ambrose, says he’ll be watching from home. It’s been a tough sell for V8 Supercars from the start, but all that can be done now is to do what the category does best - provide the highest quality touring car racing on the planet.

The locals that do decide to make the trek out to the COTA this weekend are highly unlikely to be disappointed by what they see.

Austin energy

V8 Supercars community buzzing ahead of US pilgrimage

A

mid a gruelling early season schedule, the inaugural trip to the United States has proven somewhat of a carrot for the hard working V8 Supercars team personnel. After an ‘off-season’ spent building their new fleets of 2013-generation V8 Supercars, the months since Adelaide’s season opener have hardly allowed for much time to rest. The Symmons Plains - Pukekohe - Barbagallo - Austin quartet of events has had teams flatout simply turning the new machines around between races, let alone developing them.

Some, like a selection of the Red Bull Racing Australia operation, are heading as far afield as Canada for some mountain biking jollies, while the likes of New York and Las Vegas can expect to be inundated with V8 Supercars folk in the week following Austin. “Up and down pitlane when you talk to everybody the one race that everyone is having a holiday and taking the family to is Austin,” explains Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom, who visited Austin last year to promote the event.

Jason Bright is by far the most experienced on American soil thanks to starts in US Formula Ford 2000 (1996), Indy Lights (2000) and the American Le Mans Series (2006). Alex Davison (Porsche Supercup outing at Indianapolis in 2002 and a handful of American Le Mans Series races in a Porsche in 2003 and 2008), Alexandre Premat (American Le Mans Series in 2011) and James Courtney (Japanese SuperGT in 2004) have also ticked the box to varying degrees.

Many others in the field are touting the opportunity as the fulfilment of a life-long dream, including the likes of Rick Kelly, who had been working on a possible NASCAR switch during 2007 before settling in V8 Supercars for the long haul. All-In-One Security

Although the trip to the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, will be paying full championship points, the trip stateside looms as a mix of work and pleasure for most. The majority are using the opportunity to explore the United States before or after the meeting and, being motor racing people, many a planning a visit to either the Indianapolis 500 IndyCar or Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR events - both of which are being held a week after the Austin 400.

“It’s the one that we’ve all pinned on the calendar as the best event. Having been there and see the work that the guys have put in on the circuit... I saw it at about 60 percent completion and then watched the Formula 1 race very closely. It’s an amazing facility. I’m really looking forward to it.” A new playground Just four of the 28 current V8 Supercars drivers have raced cars in the USA before.

Regardless of country, it’s not often that the V8 Supercars community gets to experience a completely new road course layout. An array of street venues have come and gone from the championship’s calendar

over the last decade, but one has to go back to the opening of Queensland Raceway in 1999 for the last fresh permanent venue at home. The intervening years though have seen inaugural visits to international venues Pukekohe (New Zealand), Shanghai (China), Sakhir (Bahrain) and Yas Marina (Abu Dhabi) - the latter three being Grand Prix circuits designed by German architect Hermann Tilke, whose company is also behind the COTA. The Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney has been one of the most vocal detractors of Tilke’s work in the past. The 2010 V8 Supercars Champion found himself in hot water with local authorities after publically denouncing the Yas Marina Circuit as ‘boring’ upon arrival. Courtney is the only V8 Supercars driver to have sampled the COTA at speed and enthuses of its character. “A lot of the Tilke places that he’s done have been incredibly boring like Abu Dhabi, which is about as exciting as going to the fish market,” Courtney told radio show V8 Nation before jetting back to Austin early for more pre-event promotion. “Those places have zero character, but at least with this one they’ve kept some pretty good elevation and undulation. The track is a bit tricky because of it falls away in sections, rather than being just offcamber corners like Abu Dhabi. “You go into Turn 1 and it’s like driving up the side of a friggen’ mountain. You can brake so late because it is so steep, and then right at the top it flattens out. It sucks you in because it’s so wide and it’ll encourage people to have a dive. But then you’ll get to the top and be snagging brakes (because of the way it flattens).”

“That’s going to be annoying for us, trying to get the thing turned and driving off,” notes Courtney of the slow corners. Several of the corners have been likened to those seen elsewhere - an aspect that Winterbottom is particularly enthusiastic about. “Turn 1 is like our Turn 2 at Bathurst with a big uphill braking area,” he says. “It looks like Istanbul in some spots (Turns 16-18) and it looks like Silverstone from Turn 2 onwards. It’s got a lot of the great corners all linked together. “Unfortunately the track stopped at Turn 11 when I was there so I only know 50 percent. I should be pretty good on the front half!” Talking tyres Tyre degradation is expected to be the key on-track talking point of the weekend. Although high levels performance drop-off were no surprise at the soft-tyre event at Barbagallo two weeks ago, the amount of degradation experienced with the hard tyre during the preceding Pukekohe meeting raised eyebrows with plenty of teams. Despite the Austin format having been changed from hard and soft to just the hard tyre, as well as the introduction of compulsory pitstops in each race, teams are expecting the tyres be a major challenge. “We’ve seen from our data and races from other series that the surface, mixed with the elevation changes and high-speed direction changes places a lot of demand on the car and tyres,” says FPR’s engineering manager Mathew Nilsson of the COTA.

srentrap munitalp duorp ruO “The heat will also be a factor so it is

going to be interesting to see how quickly we all adapt to all the variables.”

ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

The uphill Turn 1 approach is undoubtedly the signature of the venue, and is followed by a quick descent and a series of third and fourth gear esses (Turns 3-7). Despite its width, much of the rest of the lap is relatively tight, with a total of 20 corners packed into the 3.7 km layout. Preevent estimates have 11 of those corners with apex speeds of 75km/h or less, with three such corners coming in succession through a section known as ‘The Plaza’ (Turns 12-14).

Dunlop’s motorsport operations manager Kevin Fitzsimons admits the weekend will be interesting for the teams, but doesn’t expect any drama.

but looking at the tyre choices they that MotoGP and F1 used in Austin compared to other tracks I’m not expecting any dramas at all.” The presence of a 92 car field for the Pirelli World Challenge GT support class will also be something for the V8 teams to be wary of as they deal with what can be expected to be a rapidly evolving track through the three days of action. The embrace Whether or not the locals will flock out to the COTA for the V8 Supercars remains to be seen.

“A new track is always a learning curve for everybody but it’s an exciting one for the category.

Although the area lacks a strong road racing culture, Courtney’s experience at the MotoGP event - which attracted some 130,000 fans across its three days - left him encouraged that the Australian series will draw more than just the odd curious onlooker.

“We’ll be working closely with the teams and monitoring how they get on

“I was at the MotoGP (promoting the V8 event) and the guys said that they’ve

“It’s a little bit of a challenge but it shouldn’t be a big issue,” he says.

organised an autograph session for you,” he recounts. “I thought ‘oh, this is going to be a little embarrassing’, but I rolled over there and there was a line like for our autograph sessions at home. “Guys had photos of the cars and programs from races that they’d bought off the internet. Everyone there knew what was going on and were all asking about the races and the cars.”

“I think they’ll get our heritage,” adds Winterbottom. “Cars like the Ford Mustang are so revered in America and we have that same love for our cars. I think they’ll get that love and that passion. I think they’ll embrace it.” Whether or not the attention of the locals is captured by the category, one can be certain that the V8 Supercars teams, media and travelling fan-base are set for one of the most memorable weekends in the championship’s history.

8 Supercars Championship leader Jamie Whincup is the instant favourite for the Austin 400 - and not just because he’s the points leader or winner of the last two races at Barbagallo. Whincup’s success offshore has been unmatched, the Red Bull Racing Australia driver winning 16 of the last 24 V8SC races held outside Australia from Bahrain 2008 onwards. He’s also taken nine of the 21 pole positions in that time, with a total of eight drivers sharing the 12 other pole positions on offer between them. On the flip side, Whincup’s teammate Craig Lowndes has claimed just one of his record 91 ATCC/V8SC race wins outside Australia - a single race win in Bahrain in 2007. A total of 57 races have been held offshore since the first overseas event at Pukekohe in 2001. Interestingly, five different drivers have taken the first race win at each international venue. Those drivers are Greg Murphy (Pukekohe 2001), Todd Kelly (Shanghai 2005), Jason Bright (Bahrain 2006), Garth Tander (Hamilton 2008) and Jamie Whincup (2010 Yas Marina Circuit).

P

epsi Max Crew FPR Ford driver Mark Winterbottom is desperate to break a 12-month winning-drought as he continues to mount a comeback from a lowly position in the championship pointscore. Winterbottom last won a V8SC race at Phillip Island on May 19 last year, which will be exactly one year ago to the day come Sunday race day at the Circuit of The Americas. He will also have added reason for celebrations should he win in Texas given he will celebrate his 32nd birthday on the Monday after the event on May 20.

srentrap munitalp duorp ruO ™

Winterbottom sits ninth in the championship, 292 points behind leader Jamie Whincup. The Ford pilot was the first V8 Supercar driver to visit the Circuit of The Americas last year while it was under construction.

It currently sits on 249 after the last event at Barbagallo with rivals Ford achieving 215 pole positions. Peter Brock took Holden’s first ATCC/V8SC pole position at Symmons Plains in Tasmania in 1973, while Holden drivers have dominated qualifying this year and taken 11 of the 12 pole positions so far this season.

W

hile things remain tough for the Holden Racing Team, it’s the recent qualifying form of former champion Garth Tander that produces some startling statistical analysis. Tander qualified outside the top 15 for all three races at the last event at Barbagallo in Perth; the first time since the first three qualifying sessions of his V8 Supercar career way back in 1998 (at Phillip Island, Winton and Mallala) that he’s qualified outside the top 15 three times in succession.

T

Tander has qualified in the top 10 for just five of the 12 races held so far this year, whereas Courtney has managed it eight times.

Courtney averages a starting position of 9.67 this year, while Tander averages 11.9.

There have been 50 V8 Supercar Championship races since HRT’s last win at Bathurst in 2011.

ander has also been out-qualified so far this year by HRT teammate James Courtney for the first time since they became teammates in 2011.

The Bagman says...

R

ed Bull Racing Australia made a strong statement last time out at Barbagallo with three race victories. The team has clearly made positive steps forward with their cars since Adelaide, while Jamie Whincup in particular appears to have come a long way in adapting his style to the new vehicles. Whincup’s one-lap pace this year has never been under question. His season qualifying average of 2.4 is a full 1.2 places better than second-best Mark Winterbottom, and 3.8 ahead of team-mate Craig Lowndes. Whincup also has an immense record in overseas V8 Supercars races - winning 16 of the last 24 races held offshore. Perhaps most importantly, the two Red Bull machines also appeared to have the best tyre life of any cars at Barbagallo. Although the field is back on the hard tyre this weekend, the Austin layout is expected to give the rubber a real workout.

Red Bull is therefore the favourite, but wins for either Ford Performance Racing or Brad Jones Racing should also be no surprise. All four FPR Falcons were among the eight highest points scorers over the Barbagallo weekend and tyre life on the Fords also appeared strong. Winterbottom has been heavily involved in the promotion of the Austin event and will be particularly motivated for a big result. Jason Bright led the BJR assault at Barbagallo and has accrued an impressive two wins and three poles over the season so far. The now veteran driver enjoys the challenge of new circuits and will be expecting to be well in the mix. Of the rest, James Courtney may have a slight track knowledge advantage thanks to his pre-event promotion laps, but his chances of seeing the podium will depend largely on whether or not HRT has made any gains since Barbagallo, particularly over one lap.
