GT elite ready to rock the mountain

M

ount Panorama’s unique challenge continues to entice the world’s leading GT teams and drivers to do battle to claim the Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour. Firmly established as Australia’s International endurance race, manufacturers and teams are finding the event increasingly hard to ignore with the Bathurst 12 Hour fast becoming the race of choice to prepare for the new season. This year is no different with 24 GT3 cars entered with seven marques represented for this year’s edition. Nissan will return to defend its Bathurst 12 Hour crown following a dramatic last gasp run to victory 12 months ago. The Japanese manufacturer will be joined by factory backed efforts from Bentley and Audi with McLaren the latest to throw its hat into the ring, courtesy of a two car attack facilitated by Tekno Autosports. Meanwhile, V8 Supercars’ takeover of the event last year has seen the driving talent on show boosted with main game V8 drivers now eligible to take part. As a result, the grid will sees a selection of Australia’s top touring car drivers tackle GT racing’s elite headed by 2007 and 2006 champions Garth Tander and Rick Kelly. Tander will pilot a new specification Audi R8 while

Kelly will team up with defending winners Nissan in Bathurst conquering GT-R GT3. The duo will be joined on the grid by Will Davison, Nick Percat, Tim Slade, Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen. Australia’s best drivers will however face stern competition from some of the world’s best GT pilots, including former Blancpain GT Series winner and the event lap record holder Laurens Vanthoor, multiple FIA WEC GT champion Toni Vilander and Nurburgring 24 Hour victor Christopher Haase. With such a plethora on talent on show, the Bathurst 12 Hour will is once again set to provide another edge of the seat thriller. This weekend’s Bathurst 12 Hour will also see the launch of the new Intercontinental GT Series, the latest brainchild of Blancpain GT Series boss Stephane Ratel. Bathurst will act as one of four rounds for this new GT endurance series. This new Challenge is aimed at manufacturers, who are encouraged to use local teams to repre-sent them in these leading GT3 races, as it is more cost and time-effective to fly engineers and drivers around the world rather than cars and equipment.

Audi

Car: R8 LMS GT3 (2015, 2014) Teams: Phoenix Racing, Melbourne Performance Centre, Jamec Pem Racing, Supabarn Supermarkets, International Motorsport Since the event adopted GT3 machinery Audi has been the most successful manufacturer recording two victories in 2011 and 2012. This year the German marque is the most represented on the grid with seven R8 GT3s set to try and conquer the mountain once again. Former winners Phoenix Racing have elected to make the trip from Germany once again with an all-star line up for their solitary 2015 specification R8 LMS GT3. After posting the event lap record to secure pole position last year, former Blancpain GT champion Laurens Vanthoor heads an experienced trio who will be keen to go one better than the second place finish of last year. The Belgian will be joined by fellow factory Audi pilot and former FIA GT1 world champion Markus Winkelhock and former V8 Supercars driver Alex Davison. A strong two car attack from Jamec Pem Racing is likely to emerge as contenders for the top honours. Two-time winner Christopher Mies will team up with former FIA GT3 champion Christopher Hasse and Italian GT driver Marco Mapelli to pilot the 2015 spec #74 Melbourne Performance Centre R8. Meanwhile, the #75 entry will be headed by 2007 V8 Supercars champion Garth Tander and factory Audi pilot Rene Rast, who is a late replacement for the injured Craig Lowndes. Australian GT racer Steve McLaughlan. Melbourne Performance Centre will also field a further three R8s for Supabarn Supermarkets, Hallmarc Racing and Aris GT Motorsport. Experienced Australian Marcus Marshall (Superbarn Supermarkets), Christer Jons (Hallmarc Racing) and Nathan Antunes (Aris GT Motorsport) headline the entries. An all-Kiwi entry from International Motorsport featuring Matt Halliday will complete the line up.

The famous British outfit made its Bathurst 12 Hour debut last year and is back for more after coming so close to taking out the coveted race 12 months ago. The factory effort run by the renowned M-Sport operation will once again field two Continental GT3s featuring an array of GT talent behind the wheel. Four of the six drivers that contested last year’s race remain, headlined by an unchanged lead entry of Guy Smith, Steven Kane and Matt Bell. The all British trio were in contention for the race victory before slipping to fourth on the final lap of the race. A mixture of European and Australian talent will form the driver line up for the sister entry. Former FIA Formula 2 champion Andy Soucek retains his seat with the Spaniard joined by new factory Bentley driver Maxime Soulet. The team will receive useful local knowledge from Nissan V8 Supercars co-driver David Russell who has emerged as a real talent around the Mount Panorama circuit in GT3 machinery. Armed with the data from last year, Bentley will be among the contenders to end up on the top step of the podium.

Former F1 driver Mika Salo, who was part of the 2014 success, returns with the Finn joined by fellow countryman and former FIA WEC GT champion Toni Vilander. The squad’s Australian GT combination of Tony D’Alberto and Grant Denyer will join the pair to form one of the most credentialed line ups in the field. Vicious Rumour Racing were one of the surprise packages of last year with the Australian operation coming through the field to finish sixth. The outfit has retained the services of ex-F1 pilot Andrea Montermini, Benny Simonsen, brother of the late Allan Simonsen and Ferrari specialist Renato Loberto with car owner Tony DeFelice completing the quartet.

Lamborghini

Car: Gallardo GT3, Gallardo R-EX GT3 Teams: M Motorsport, Lago Racing, Performance West Motorsport Lamborghini boasts arguably its strongest Bathurst 12 Hour showing yet with three highly credentialed teams ready to conquer Australia’s international endurance race. Although yet to taste success at the mountain, the Italian sportscar manufacturer has shown flashes of true speed to challenge the front runners. M Motorsport returns for another assault on the mountain with a four driver attack including new Nissan V8 Supercars driver Dale Wood and his brother Glen Wood. Car owner Justin McMillan and experienced Kiwi John McIntyre complete a line up which has plenty to offer. Fellow Australian squad Lago Racing will run Lamborghini’s latest iteration of the Gallardo known as the Extenso. Businessman Roger Lago will be joined by regular V8 Supercars co-drivers Steve Owen and Luke Youlden, who will bring a wealth of Mount Panorama experience having

McLaren is the latest marque to unleash a factory backed effort to conquer the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour having joined forces with V8 Supercars outfit Tekno Autosports. The collaboration between the British manufacturer and the Gold Coast team has produced one of the most exciting two car driver line ups for this year’s edition. Multiple V8 Supercars race winner Shane van Gisbergen returns to the event after sitting out last year with the Kiwi joined by his former V8 enduro partner Jonathon Webb and factory McLaren pilot Alvaro Parente. The sister car poses a potent force with Tekno’s new V8 recruit Will Davison joined by factory McLaren drivers Rob Bell and young rookie Andrew Watson. Australian GT boss Tony Quinn and his son Klark will join forces in the Darrel Lea entry alongside the experienced Craig Baird which should form a solid trio. Finally McElrea Racing are likely to threaten the front runners with Tim Slade, Warren Luff and Matt Campbell joining owner Tony Walls.

Intercontinental GT Challenge Series

Mercedes-Benz

Car: SLS AMG GT3 Teams: Erebus Motorsport, Garth Walden Racing, MISHUMOTORS

This newly formed Intercontinental GT Challenge Series is aimed at manufacturers, who are encouraged to use local teams to represent them in these leading GT3 races, as it is more cost and time-effective to fly engineers and drivers around the world rather than cars and equipment. Beginning at the Bathurst 12 Hour, the series will link up the Spa 24 Hours and the Sepang 12 Hours which will act as the finale in December. Both a manufacturers’ and a drivers’ title will be awarded in the Pro category, while a Drivers’ title will be awarded in Pro-Am. The events will all have common technical regulations and the BOP will be managed by SRO.

An all-star driver roster from Erebus Motorsport has thrown the 2013 winners into the mix for outright glory. The Melbourne squad will once again field two Mercedes SLS AMG GT3s for the once around the clock classic, which will be piloted by some of the German marque’s most talented drivers. Five-time DTM champion Bernd Schneider heads the line up in car #36 alongside 2014 pole winner Maro Engel and Austin Cindric, the son of Team Penske president Tim Cindric. The latter impressed on his event debut with the team last year. The sister car will be driven by Erebus’ new V8 Supercars signing David Reynolds, 2013 race winner Thomas Jaeger and German Nico Bastian. German squad MISHUMOTORS is set to make its maiden appearance at the event with its line up headed by IMSA GT ace Renger van der Zande. Garth Walden Racing will field an SLS for Ash Samadi and Dean Grant.

Nissan

Car: Nissan GT-R GT3 Team: NISMO Athlete Global Team Following a dramatic run to victory last year Nissan are back to defend its Bathurst 12 Hour crown with their iconic GT-R GT3. Two of the three drivers from the 2015 success remain with the driver line up boosted by 2006 V8 Supercars champion Rick Kelly. Kelly will team up with Japan’s Katsumasa Chiyo, making his third appearance at the event, alongside former GT Academy winner Florian Strauss. Having learned how to conquer the mountain, the trio are expected to be at the forefront as they go in search of back-to-back victories.

The Best of the Rest

While Class A is set to provide the outright winner of the 2016 Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour, there will be plenty of action further down the grid. Class B features a field of seven Porsches with the Grove Group entry expected to be the favourites with a star-studded line up that features reigning Le Mans 24 Hours winner Earl Bamber and Volvo V8 Supercars star Scott McLaughlin. The invitational class sees five of the Australian-built MARC Cars entered alongside BMW and Porsche entries.

Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour I History 7

The start of the 2011 Bathurst 12 Hour

Bathurst 12 Hour - Australia’s International Endurance Race HISTORY OF THE 12 HOUR The Bathurst 12 Hour first sprang to life in 1991 with Allan Grice, Peter Fitzgerald and Nigel Arkell guiding a Toyota Supra turbo to victory. Manufacturer interest gathered momentum following the initial staging of the event with Mazda putting in a concerted effort that reaped wins with a factory backed RX-7 rotary winning from 1992 to 1995. Due to rising costs, the promoter was forced to retreat from holding the race at Mount Panorama with the race running at Eastern Creek in 1995, won by Dick Johnson and John Bowe, before it was discontinued the following year. While the future of reviving the 12 Hour remained in limbo, the idea of an endurance race saw the staging of the Ross Palmer-run 24 Hour races which were held for two years - 2002 and 2003. The races were won by the all conquering Holden Monaros built and prepared by Garry Rogers Motorsport. The 12 Hour for production cars bounced

back in 2007 when it was part of the Bathurst Motor Festival before moving away from that event from 2009. Moves to introduce GT3 specifications into the race were made in 2011 which saw the race take the first steps to become a drawcard for international squads. This year will see 24 outright GT3 contenders tackle the once-around-theclock classic.

2011 Bathurst winning Team Joest Audi

GT3 ERA 2011: Team Joest conquers the mountain The Team Joest Audi R8 GT3s dominated the first of a new era of Bathurst 12 Hour contests headlined by the GT3 regulations. Allowing GT3 machinery to compete for outright victory upset the production car

Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour I History fraternity but a modest entry of 26 cars lined up for the blast around the revered Mount Panorama circuit. It was the German Team Joest squad which shined the brightest with its two Audi R8s dominating the race, leading 223 of the 292 laps. The all-Australian R8 entry of triple V8 Supercar champion Craig Lowndes, Warren Luff and Mark Eddy pipped the Christopher Mies, Marc Basseng and Darryl O’Young sister car to pole position by just three tenths of a second. Following an intriguing tactical battle between the cars it was Mies/Basseng/ O’Young which prevailed with a margin of seven tenths over team-mates Lowndes/ Luff/Eddy. The Porsche GT3R of Tony Quinn, Klark Quinn and Craig Baird secured the final place on the podium despite being a lap behind the Audi’s after losing ground under a Safety Car. 2012 - Audi triumphs again with Phoenix Racing The Bathurst 12 Hour was once again an Audi affair when Phoenix Racing took out the 2012 edition of the growing endurance classic. The squad were one of three new international squads, who flocked to the race alongside the British United Autosports entry and the renowned Black Falcon Mercedes SLS team. The race also welcomed the Australian Mercedes SLS crew from Erebus Motorsport. After starting from pole position, the #1 Phoenix Racing Audi of 2011 winners Mies, O’Young and German debutant Christer Jons led the majority of the contest of which eight of the 12 hours were held in wet weather. The tricky conditions provided a high attrition rate with just three Class A cars reaching the finish. The previous year’s runners-up Lowndes, Luff and Eddy were one of the casualties when

their race unravelled after seven hours. A spin on the entry to the pits and a penalty saw the #2 Phoenix Audi lose four laps before Eddy crashed at the top of the mountain, ending their race prematurely. The lead Phoenix entry suffered its own drama in Hour 7 when Mies spun into the gravel trap at Murrays corner. Luckily he was able to recover and resume the lead of the race. In the end Mies/O’Young/Jons came through to take the victory by a minute and 13 seconds from Erebus Motorsport’s Jeroen Bleekemolen, Peter Hackett, Tim Slade and American Bret Curtis. Despite being unsuited to the conditions, the Clearwater Racing Ferrari 458 was third in the hands of Craig Baird, Irishman Matt Griffin and Mok Wen Sun.

Maranello Ferarri of Salo, Allan Simonsen, John Bowe and Peter Edwards also retired before the halfway point. At the front, the race developed into a battle between the two Erebus Motorsport entries with little separating the #36 and #63 cars. However steering damage to the latter with V8 Supercar driver Lee Holdsworth at the wheel need their victory hopes, ending the race in sixth. In the end, the lead Erebus Mercedes SLS of Schneider, Jager and Roloff took the chequered flag. Despite receiving three drive-through penalties and a mechanical black flag, Clearwater Racing finished second piloted by Baird/Griffin/Sun. The VIP Petfoods Porsche of Shane van Gisbergen/Klark Quinn/Matt Kingsley came home in third with the latter a late replacement for Tony Quinn, who injured himself earlier in the race at the wheel of his Australian GT Aston Martin.

2013 - Mercedes become the mountain masters An all star German line up of Touring car legend Bernd Schneider, GT ace Thomas Jager and Alexander Roloff helped Australia’s Erebus Motorsport win the 2013 Bathurst 12 Hour. The race continued to grow on the international stage receiving a record entry of 53 cars. The field included a couple of familiar faces from Formula 1 with Mika Salo and Ivan Capelli joining the Maranello Motorsport and Trofeo Motorsport entries. The 2013 edition of the race also doubled as the Australian GT Championship season opener. However, it was the lead Erebus Mercedes SLS of Schneider, Jager and Roloff that grabbed the headlines with the trio emerging from a deluge in the final two hours of the race to take victory by a lap. It was contest full of incidents prompting a record amount of Safety Cars periods with 15 in total. A crash inside the first hour ruled out the Lago Racing Lamborghini and the VIP Petfoods Aston Martin of Tony Quinn. The Team Engstler BMW Z4 and the

Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour I History 9 2014 - Emotions run high as Maranello Motorsport strikes Craig Lowndes led Maranello Motorsport to a stunning victory in the 2014 Bathurst 12 Hour by holding off the HTP Mercedes of Max Buhk in a thrilling finish. Lowndes combined with co-drivers Mika Salo, John Bowe and car owner Peter Edwards to recover from two drive-through penalties to win the race. The five-time Bathurst 1000 winner had to survive a Safety Car restart with 13

minutes to go that saw a 15 second lead evaporate. The superior straightline speed and braking power of the Mercedes threatened to upset the local crowd, with Buhk ranging up along the outside of the Ferrari as just five minutes remained. Although the gap fluctuated through traffic, Lowndes hung on to win by just 0.4s. Will Davison and Shane van Gisbergen were third and fourth in the #63 Erebus Mercedes and Quinn McLaren respectively;

the top four separated by just three seconds at the finish. It would prove to be an emotional triumph for the Maranello Motorsport team with the victory arriving just months after the death of one of its regular drivers Allan Simonsen. The Dane, who perished at the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours, was part of the quartet at the previous year’s race and as a mark of respect race organisers renamed the pole position award after the talented GT ace.

Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour I Story 11

Story Of 2015 - Nismo Godzilla Claims Tense 12 Hour N issan claimed a remarkable victory in the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour, surviving a Safety Car strewn marathon to revisit history in the city’s bicentennial year. Brought home by diminutive Japanese driver Katsumasa Chiyo, the GT-R sliced its way from third position and into the lead after the restart from a 20th Safety Car period with just over four minutes remaining. GT superstar and polesitter Laurens Vanthoor claimed second for Phoenix Audi while Stefan Mucke finished third in the Craft Bamboo Aston Martin. It was the first win by the Japanese manufacturer since Jim Richards and Mark Skaife took a second successive Bathurst 1000 victory in the R32 Skyline GT-R in 1992. Wolfgang Reip pitted the GT-R from the lead with 1:43min remaining handing it to Florian Strauss who did a quick-fire 40 minute stint before Chiyo completed a tense final hour. The #10 Bentley almost took an againstthe-odds win after being hit with two drive through penalties and a dehydrated Matt

Bell before claiming fourth. Bell’s drink bottle malfunctioned in his initial stint causing him to vomit in the car and seek medical treatment before recovering to negotiate the final stint and give team-mates Guy Smith and Steven Kane a sniff of victory. Jack Le Brocq took fifth in the Erebus Mercedes SLS he shared with Dean Canto and Ricahrd Muscat. Andrea Montermini, Benny Simonsen and Renato Lobarto came from the back of the grid in a stirring drive to claim sixth with David Russell, Steve Owen and Roger Lago in the Lago Lamborghini seventh. Gold Coast racer Marcus Marshall, Sam Power, James Koundouris and Theo Koundouris claimed victory in Class B in the #47 Porsche. The #54 Lotus Exige Cup R driven by Tony Alford, Mark O’Connor and Peter Leemhuis took Class C honours. Gold Coast driver Beric Lynton, John Modystach and Robert Thomson took the Ralph Bellamy designed BMW 1 M Coupe to victory in Class D. In the Invitational Class, the #93 MARC

Cars Focus V8 driven by Gary Jacobsen, Ben Gersekowski and Adam Gowans prevailed. The second half of the race continued to be interrupted with Safety Car interventions. Erebus Motorsport’s two-car attack was dealt a blow when a right rear puncture sent Nathan Morcom end-on into The Cutting which brought out Safety Car #10 The #43 Class I Mazda RX-8 went in at the same spot bringing out another caution soon after while the #35 Nissan took the lead from the #97 Craft Bamboo Aston Martin. On lap 156 Canto (#36 Erebus Mercedes SLS) tagged Michele Rugolo at Hell Corner put-ting the #77 AF Corse Ferrari into the wall bringing out SC #12. Canto was subsequently handed a drive through penalty for the incident. The #52 compareinsurance.com.au Aston Martin driven by Gordon Shedden brought out Safety Car #13 with just over four hours remaining when it speared into the gravel at Murray’s Corner. Ash Samadi was sent for a high speed ride at the Chase in the #7 Mercedes SLS

12

Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour I Story after contact from Matt Bell in the #10 Bentley which triggered the 14th caution period. Bell subsequently dropped a position to fifth after receiving a drive through for the incident. The Ginetta GT4 had black smoke billowing from its engine before stopping on the circuit and bringing out a recordequalling 15th Safety Car. After the longest period of green running which stretched to 65 minutes, the #6 Class B Porsche driven by Aaron Zerefos slewed off at Murray’s Corner, beaching the machine in the gravel. It signalled a record 16th Safety Car before Richard Muscat in the #36 Erebus Mercedes SLS took control for the restart.

Ivo Breukers was pitched into the gravel before slamming into the wall at McPhillamy after being assisted by Felix Baumgartner in the #16 Phoenix Audi. Breukers escaped the accident unhurt however was subsequently taken to hospital as a precaution after complaining of a headache. With just under two hours remaining the third-placed #97 Craft Bamboo Aston Martin driv-en by Alex MacDowall spun at Griffin’s Bend before rejoining in sixth, losing three posi-tions. Vanthoor pitted from a 50-plus second lead with just under an hour remaining handing the lead to the #10 Bentley. Shortly after, the #11 Bentley with Maxi Buhk aboard came to a stop on Mountain

Straight bringing out the the 18th Safety Car. It was recovered and taken back to the pits on a flatbed with the race restarting with 38 minutes remaining. Then the Flying B Bentley driven by David Brabham found the fence at The Cutting which brought out another Safety Car after an incident with Stefan Mucke’s #97 Aston. Brabham placed in a neck brace and taken to the medical centre before taken transported to nearby Orange hospital for precautionary x-rays. Reigning event winners Maranello Motorsport were forced to withdraw from the event early after suffering a car destroying crash in practice.

Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour I Circuit Guide - Drivers eye

CIRCUIT GUIDE: Location: Bathurst, New South Wales Length: 6.21 kilometres Direction: Anti-Clockwise Fastest Point: Conrod Straight Corners: 23 (14 Left 9 Right) Qualifying Lap Record: 2m02.5521s (Laurens Vanthoor, Phoenix Racing, Audi R8 LMS GT3 2015) Race Lap Record: 2m03.3091s (Markus Winkelhock, Phoenix Racing, Audi R8 LMS GT3 2015)

A LAP OF M Forrest’s Elbow: Named after Jack Forrest, a motorcycle racer who scraped his elbow away after dropping his bike on the corner, Forrest’s Elbow is a sharp left-hand turn that leads on to the high-speed straight on Conrod.

The Chase: Added in 1987, The Chase was constructed in preparation for the World Touring Car Championship to adhere to FIA rules. The length of Conrod Straight exceeded the maximum length allowed on a WTCC track, and therefore was built to standard. The Chase is a quick right sweep which breaks up Conrod straight and incidentally created the fastest right hand bend in Australia.

Murray’s Corner: Murray’s Corner is the final corner of a lap at Mount Panorama before crossing the finished line (interestingly not the start line). It is a right-angled left-hand turn onto Pit Straight.

Hell Corner: A 90 degree left hand turn, Hell corner is the first of 23 bends along the track. Heavy braking is required following the slight uphill climb at the end of the start/ finish straight.

The Cutting: The Cutting sees the track cut into the rock of the mountain. It provides drivers with a 1:6 gradient exit at the top, and is one of the tightest corners on the track. Overtaking is virtually impossible here, though that doesn’t stop drivers from trying. It is very hard to recover from spins due to the gradient and closeness of the walls.

Conrod Straight: Conrod straight is the fastest section of the Mount Panorama track. The straight is a considerable descent with a hump in the middle before again dropping down and entering the Chase..

Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour I Circuit Guide - Drivers eye 19

MOUNT PANORAMA The Esses: So named for its ‘S’ shapes, the Esses provide a unique experience for drivers descending the Mountain. Accidents here force drivers into quick thinking as the line of sight coming off Skyline is slim to none. Drivers rely on instinct to master the curves coming down the Mount. The Dipper: The third sharp corner in the Esses is The Dipper, aptly named as it literally dips off on the track. It is a steep, sharp left-hand turn. Prior to the construction of safety barriers, drivers would rely on all their skills to not only stay on the racing line, but the track itself after coming off the Dipper.

Brock’s Skyline: Providing breathtaking views over the Bathurst Region, Skyline ends with a steep right hand corner signifying the decent of the Mountain.

Reid Park / Sulman Park / McPhillamy Park: The steady incline up the mountain continues with a series of fast sweeps through Reid Park, Sulman Park and McPhillamy Park. The track turns right after The Cutting before a fast left surrounded by concrete walls which ensures any mistake here will be punished. After Reid Park, drivers brave a steep drop, flowing into a climbing left hand turn, heading back towards the highest point of Mount Panorama. Sulman Park is the highest point of the track, topping out at 862m above sea level. Sulman merges to McPhillamy. McPhillamy Park is a downhill, deceptively fast left hand turn which is guarded by a crest prior to turn-in, rendering the corner blind to approaching drivers. Drivers have to stay close to the wall while turning so as not to go out wide upon exit.

Griffins Bend: Named after the Mayor of Bathurst who opened the track to racing in 1938, Griffins Bend has claimed many an eager driver screaming off Mountain Straight. This corner provides a negatively cambered road which tests drivers to their limits. Mountain Straight: After Hell Corner, the 1.1km Mountain Straight awaits which features a significant decline and incline on the way to Griffin’s bend. Mountain Straight allows cars to reach speeds of up to 250km/h.

Unfinished business: Bentley plotting Bathurst redemption he final moments of the 2015 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour will forever be etched in the memory of the factory Bentley squad. After a punishing 11 hours and 50 minutes the #10 Continental GT3 emerged in the lead with victory in sight, only for Matt Bell to slip to fourth on the final corner of the last lap. Bell had no answer to the hard charging Nissan GT-R in the final laps but contact with Stefan Mucke’s Craft Bamboo Aston Martin in the closing stages saw the Brit cruelly miss out on a deserved podium. With the memories still relatively fresh, the manufacturer is eager to rectify the result this weekend. Bentley returns to the iconic 6.2km ribbon of Australian tarmac with a two pronged Continental GT3 attack featuring four of the six drivers from last year’s event. The M-Sport run team has elected to retain its trio of former Le Mans 24 Hours winner Guy Smith, Steven Kane and Bell, while Australian David Russell and Belgian GT ace Maxime Soulet join Former FIA F2 champion Andy Soucek in the sister entry.

T

Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour I Feature 23 Having impressed on their event debut Bentley boss Brian Gush is confident lessons learned from last year will help the squad secure the podium that got away. “Any race that we haven’t won is unfinished business in our eyes. Every race we enter we do so aiming to win,” said Gush. “We weren’t that happy with how the race went especially the last few laps. The Nissan seemed to find some power it didn’t

have before and the last corner antics hurt us as well. “Bathurst has become more prominent on the endurance calendar and with the change in administration we are looking forward to having good race there. “It is a big expense and you don’t take these decisions lightly but we have every faith the event will be good for us. “We have got a lot data now with regards

to set-up and how the track changes. This year we were going in quite new to it and we took a lot of advice from people we knew. “We should be able to approach it now with a lot more in our pocket. “Bathurst has become more prominent on the endurance calendar and with the change in administration we are looking forward to having good race there.”

Aussie Russell becomes a Bentley boy This year’s Bathurst 12 Hour will provide a career milestone for Australian driver David Russell having landed a coveted factory drive with Bentley. The 34-year-old Queenslander has proven to be a valuable driver at the event boasting impressive pace and circuit knowledge, which the British marque hopes to benefit from. While the Continental GT3 is new beast for Russell to master, the Aussie is relishing the opportunity to drive for one of motor racing’s most iconic manufacturers. The V8 Supercars co-driver and Porsche Carrera Cup racer joined the squad at December’s Sepang 12 Hour to ease himself into the team. “It is a major highlight of my career to join such a prestigious and successful international GT team as Bentley Motorsport,” said Russell. “Having visited the team in action at the Spa 24 Hour last year and during my test day at the Sepang 12 Hour last month, Bentley Motorsport is an outstanding operation that competes to win. “It is a privilege to be the team’s sole Australian driver at Bathurst, where I have enjoyed some great races over the years in sportscars, V8 Supercars and in production cars. I will be doing all I can to help deliver Bentley a historic first Bathurst victory.”

McLaren ready to make Bathurst impact he Bathurst 12 Hour’s growing stature on the global GT3 racing scene continues to lure manufacturers with McLaren the latest to unleash a factory backed assault. Following in the footsteps of fellow British marque Bentley, the iconic brand has earmarked the Mount Panorama endurance as a key part of its 2016 GT program. McLaren’s intent to make an impact down under has been further enforced by selecting arguably the event’s most exciting driver roster to pilot it’s two 650S GT3s run by V8 Supercars outfit Tekno Autosports. Red Bull Racing’s new V8 Supercars recruit Shane van Gisbergen continues his association with McLaren to lead the #59 entry alongside factory driver Alvaro Parente and former V8 Supercars full-time driver Jonathon Webb. The sister car features two more factory McLaren drivers with Brits Rob Bell and young rookie Andrew Watson joined by multiple V8 Supercars race winner Will Davison. McLaren has featured at the Bathurst

T

12 Hour in each of the last two editions courtesy of a privateer entry from Tony Quinn. A best finish of fourth in 2014 saw van Gisbergen and the marque’s GT boss Andrew Kirkaldy combine with Tony and Klark Quinn in a MP4-12C GT3. However, the prospect of a two car entry featuring talent from V8 Supercars and the highly regarded Blancpain GT Series has sent out a clear message that McLaren is determined to add the Bathurst 12 Hour to its growing list of achievements. The marque also heads to Australia in good form after scoring two victories in the Blancpain Endurance Series last season with two of its 12 hour pilots van Gisbergen and Bell behind the wheel. “Bathurst is very important and Australia is an important market as GT racing has exploded in the last few years,” Kirkaldy told Speedcafe.com. “I think it is key that we are there and we make a showing. “It is a fantastic circuit and if you asked all the guys at the workshop in Britain what race they would like to then they would all

say Bathurst. “We have done Bathurst before with Tony Quinn but we have only ever been there with one car so we were keen to get there this year with two 650S cars as it is always difficult in a 12 Hour race with only the one car. “Any race we go to we are there to win. We won two rounds of Blancpain last year and at the moment it is one of the strongest GT championships in the world. “We are certainly there to win. We have put out as strong a driver line up as we can. Those were the drivers that were available to us but they are clearly a good bunch. “It helps having Shane who obviously knows the track and has raced with us. He has made a big impression two years ago and the fact that he has done a lot with us it was an obvious choice.” While the event is important for McLaren to show its GT strength to the world, the race represents a significant moment for Gold Coast-based Tekno Autosports. Having received the honour of being selected by McLaren to run its Bathurst 12 Hour program, the operation will be keen to

26

Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour I Feature impress on its GT foray. Team owner Webb says the association with McLaren is a milestone moment for the team. “We are really excited to pair up with McLaren. We have two competitive cars and six really fast drivers so it is something as a group we are really looking forward to,” Webb told Speedcafe.com. “The idea from McLaren and Tekno is that if we are going to go to all this effort and expense to be there then we want to be in the best shape possible to put two cars on the podium.” The factory effort has grabbed the headlines in the build up to the race but its two customer entries are expected to pose a threat too. McElrea Racing will field a car for Tony Walls, V8 Supercars star Tim Slade, Warren Luff and Matt Campbell which has all the ingredients to challenge the top five. Meanwhile, the Darrell Lea entry features plenty of experience with multiple Australian Porsche Carrera champion Craig Baird teaming up with Tony and Klark Quinn.

Shane van Gisbergen, Rob Bell and Kevin Estre celebrate victory in the Blancpain GT Series.

Nissan armed for tough title defence ollowing its fairytale run to victory 12 months ago Nissan returns to the Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour albeit with a weight of expectation on its shoulders. The Japanese marque produced an impressive performance throughout a Safety Car strewn Mount Panorama endurance last year which culminated in a stunning display from Katsumasa Chiyo in the final laps to set up a famous win. Now with a target on its back Nissan has bolstered its driver line up for its title defence with the addition of 2006 V8 Supercars champion Rick Kelly to its 2015 victors Chiyo and Florian Strauss. Having starred at last year’s race Nissan Australia boss Richard Emery is fully expecting an equally if not more difficult race this year as its goes in search of backto-back triumphs. This year Nissan will face stern competition in the form of factory efforts from Bentley and McLaren alongside Audi, Ferrari and Mercedes entries, which have all the ingredients to conquer the mountain.

F

“The 2015 Bathurst 12 Hour victory was a momentous occasion for Nissan and NISMO, said Emery. “Our aim is to repeat the success of 1991

and 1992 and give the GT-R back-to-back Bathurst (1000) wins, but that will be a tough task given the very high level of competition in this year’s race.”

Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour I Feature 29

Emery’s thoughts are echoed by Kelly, who returns to the Bathurst 12 Hour GT-R program after being forced to sit on the sidelines last year due to a clash between the event and V8 Supercars’ pre-season test. The Melbourne driver is eager to return to the wheel after an early exit from the race when he last competed in 2014. Kelly reacquainted himself with the GT-R at a test day held at Phillip Island last week. With the strength of the opposition increasing in 2015, he feels it will take a special effort to hang on to the Bathurst 12 Hour crown. “It is such a special track and such a special car – I was so excited to get out there, do some laps and get comfortable before the 12 Hour,” said Kelly. “I was so pleased for Nissan to win, but it was tough to watch as opposed to being a

part of it. “Obviously, the NISMO team did an amazing job to win the race last year. There’s a little bit of pressure for us to go back there and do that again. “I think our chances are good, but it’s such a long day. After a solid test day, we’re in a really good position. “I think the preparation for us the NISMO team has been fantastic. “The Bathurst 12 Hour this year is going to be tougher than ever with a lot of V8 Supercars drivers and a lot of accomplished European drivers and a bunch of fantastic teams. “There are certainly a few guys eyeing our car (as we won last year) so we will have to be at the top of our game. I think we will have to play our cards a very special way to win this event.” While anticipating a gruelling battle,

gamer turned racing driver Strauss believes the 2015 specification GT-R plus the addition of Kelly will form a quicker package compared to last year. The German was a late replacement in the squad for Brit Alex Buncombe last year, who returned home for the birth of his first child. The former rental car manager is confident however that the trio will be in the mix for a at least a podium come Sunday. “We’re now all ready for Bathurst. We have a good, strong line-up. Rick has a lot of experience at Bathurst, and with a new model 2015 version of the GT-R, it should be a little quicker around the mountain,” said Strauss. “But it is a crazy race, so if we can keep going, we’ll have a good opportunity to be on the podium again.”

GT Academy winner Simmons to step up Blancpain prep at Bathurst ustralia’s new GT hope Matt Simmons will use this weekend’s Bathurst 12 Hour to aid his preparations for his Blancpain GT Series debut in 2016. The Queenslander is the latest product from Nissan’s renowned GT Academy scheme which transforms gamers into professional racing drivers. Simmons, a former postal worker from Brisbane, fought off a selection of the world’s best gamers to land a coveted professional contract with Nissan. The 26-year-old has since learned he will join Nissan for its campaign in the world leading Blancpain Endurance Series in Europe, behind the wheel of the same GT-R GT3 competing at Mount Panorama this weekend. Facing the giant leap from gamer to Nissan Blancpain GT driver Simmons will join up with the Nissan squad at Bathurst as an avid onlooker aiming to soak up as much information as possible to aid his transition. “It is going to be exciting and it is great

A

to be a part of the biggest race in Australia for GT3 cars,” Simmons told Speedcafe.com. “I went to Bathurst five years ago to watch the V8s but I never thought I would be going back there to be a part of a race team. “The biggest reason why I am going to be there is to learn as much from drivers and the team as I can. “You can really get an understanding of what they have to go through during a race weekend. It is going to be great to just listen to feedback from the drivers and see what I can take from that going into the Blancpain GT Series.” Eager to begin his professional racing career with the Blancpain GT opener at Monza in April, Simmons admits his excitement is tinged with nerves as he prepares to take on GT’s elite. “It’s a double edged sword I am excited to be out there and doing this but nervous about how I’m going to perform,” Simmons added. “However I have learned so much from this program and you don’t really realise

how much you have learnt until you are in situations again. “I have no doubt there will be times where I will reflect back on the program at events this year and get myself through it.”

Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour I Supports

Supports set to light up the mountain full program of on-track activity will highlight the days preceding the 2016 running of the LiquiMoly Bathurst 12 Hour. Building on the international theme of the event, the Radical Australia Cup will return to the Mountain while full grids of Improved Production Cars and a V8-centric Combined Sedans grid will give fans plenty of diversity to enjoy. The Radical Australia Cup made its Bathurst debut in 2014 with the open-top, Le Mans-style Sports Cars putting on a thrilling show on debut and on their return in 2015. The one-make series features two types of vehicles, the V8-powered SR8 entries and the four-cylinder SR3 category. An international class, Radicals compete all around the world with several Australian drivers having tasted the international scene. “The Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12-Hour is a rapidly growing international event and we are very pleased to be involved again,”

A

Radical Australia’s Greg Smith said. “Much like a majority of the cars that compete in the 12-hour itself, Radicals represent an international style of racing and are perfectly suited to Mount Panorama. Not only do our drivers and teams love the circuit, but they love the atmosphere around the event as well. The 12-Hour has become a major drawcard and we will be bringing a great field to Bathurst next February to put on a show.” Improved Production organisers have already confirmed a capacity 55-car grid for their return to the Mountain, having supported the event for much of the last decade. “We’ve put on some of the closest racing on the support program and that will surely continue come next February with some of the fastest Improved Production cars from every state in Australia entered,” explained category representative Garry Mennell. “From the big powerful V8 Commodores

and Falcons to the ‘grunty’ turbocharged 4 cylinder rockets, the ever present lightweight rotary Mazda’s to the sweet revving BMWs and a whole host of others, this is going to be one event not to miss.” The Bathurst ‘Combined Sedans’ grid brings together a host of state-level categories including some cars very familiar with Mount Panorama. As many as 14 ex-V8 Supercars currently racing in the Kumho V8 Touring Cars series will join a grid that includes top-flight Sports Sedans and cars from the ‘Vic V8s’ and Queensland Touring Cars state-level categories. “The response to the category has been very encouraging and we’ve already got a full grid of 55 cars confirmed,” said racer and Category Administrator Steve Lacey. “We will have a full field of very competitive cars on the grid and the support from all parties, including CAMS and the Bathurst 12 Hour organisers, has been fantastic.”
