1 returns to fertile ground for the first time in 11 years. Re-named the Red Bull Ring, it is now home turf for the champion F1 team of the previous four seasons. This will be the first grand prix held at the circuit, which first came into existence in 1969, since Michael Schumacher’s win in the 2003 Austrian GP. Mired in previous iterations by safety concerns, the circuit has been transformed following a $150million overhaul instigated by Red Bull. From 1969 to 1976 the circuit then known as the Osterreichring ran a 16-turn 5.9km circuit before two more turns were added to the circuit which ran a 5.4km layout from 1977 to 1995. The circuit was renamed the A1-Ring which ran a 4.326km track from 1996-2004. After intense speculation involving its future, major

redevelopment work commenced in 2008 ahead of its re-opening in 2011. The circuit is where the great American, Mark Donohue who was Roger Penske’s first professional driver, perished in a crash at the Vost-Hugel Kurve in 1975 which was redesigned for the following year.

Value remains with smiling Ricciardo
L
Following his tumultuous maiden grand prix victory, Daniel Ricciardo remains decent value heading into the Austrian Grand Prix. Ricciardo has firmed to a $10 chance at the Austrian circuit following his late move to take victory at the Canadian Grand Prix where he was assessed a $13 chance. While Mercedes had a rare off weekend with Lewis Hamilton forced to withdraw with brake failure after an electronics malfunction saw a permanent loss of the MGU-K. A similar problem beset Nico Rosberg who soldiered on with Ricciardo only managing to overhaul him with two laps remaining. Based on outright pace the Mercedes, even fighting major power and braking issues, almost managed to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat. While that is an ominous sign, Ricciardo has now established himself as the best of the rest and his Red Bull team are slowly but surely refining their package. It would be no surprise to see the West

Australian top the rostrum again. Hamilton is again at his obligatory oddson quote of $1.65 while Rosberg is $2.50. Ricciardo’s team-mate Sebastien Vettel is $15.
Arguably the best value in the race is the Williams pair of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas who look at their most competitive in Canada. Massa and Bottas are both $51 chances.

Arise Daniel Ricciardo Australia’s new F1 hero V
ictory in Montreal confirmed in no uncertain terms that Daniel Ricciardo is Australia’s brightest world motor racing hope. The 24-year-old firmly asserted himself as one of Formula 1’s new order after producing a faultless drive to defeat Mercedes‘ Nico Rosberg and claim a maiden grand prix win. Ricciardo’s Canadian triumph after just 57 F1 starts certainly came as a surprise, but contending for race wins is something the Red Bull driver will now have to get used too. This season the Aussie has exceeded even the highest of expectations set by his world champion team Red Bull Racing. To carry the burden of being Mark Webber’s replacement while facing up against a four-time world champion teammate in Sebastian Vettel is a daunting prospect. However, Ricciardo appears to have not only taken this in his stride, he is now emerging as the team leader following a series of triumphs over the more experienced Vettel. His feats have not gone unnoticed in the
paddock. Red Bull’s renowned chief designer Adrian Newey, who has worked with F1 world champions Ayrton Senna and Mika Hakkinen during his career, admits he has been impressed with the team’s newest recruit. “Daniel has been massively impressive this year,” said Newey as quoted by Autosport. “He has certainly exceeded all our expectations. “What I find amazing about him is how calm he is in the car. When he’s on the radio it’s like he’s sitting down with a cup of tea and driving one-handed. It’s quite remarkable. “He’s very calm, collected, takes everything in his stride, and he’s really enjoying his job. Now the dust has settled from his Canadian victory, the big question for Ricciardo is - where does he go from here? Australia’s only surviving F1 world champion Alan Jones has been a longtime supporter of Ricciardo and believes the young Aussie is destined not to let the

breakthrough win change his attitude or persona. Jones, who won the world championship in 1980 for Williams, is confident Ricciardo can challenge for a championship in the future. “I think he is a guy that has his feet firmly on the ground,” Jones told Speedcafe.com. “I don’t think he is the sort of kid that will get big headed and that is due to the way he has been brought up.

“In terms of confidence and self belief which is required to win grand prix, the Canada win will go towards lifting that. “When you win one of these things you think it would be nice to win a couple more an then after that you think a championship might be in sight. “He is in a good team and he has a long future ahead of him so there is no reason why he cannot string a few more wins together.” While Ricciardo will refocus his efforts to succeed on Red Bull’s home circuit in Austria this weekend, there is no doubt he is a potential world champion in the making.

Michael Schumacher produced one of the drives of his career to win the last Austrian Grand Prix at the A1 Ring in 2003. The Ferrari driver led from pole position but a fire during his first pit stop saw his hopes of victory severely dented as he rejoined the race in third position. The problem was caused by a faulty fuel rig which cost the German, who was lucky to esccape uninjued, 20 valuable seconds.

Juan Pablo Montoya inherited the lead for Williams but his race came to a premature end when his engine blew on lap 32. McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen took over the position held by the Colombian, but he was soon passed at the Remus curve by a ressurgent Schumacher. After clawing back the lost time in the pits, Schumacher went on to take the chequred flag by 3.3 seconds from Raikkonen and Rubens Barrichello.

AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT Overview A Formula 1 Grand Prix hasn’t been held in Austria since 2003. Teams must therefore approach the weekend as if it were a brand new event, as data and statistics from 11 years ago are simply not relevant to today’s racing. New events, or in this case those that can be considered so, provide an interesting challenge. Teams that are most adept at conducting pre-race simulation work and dynamically reacting to live data during the weekend itself will have a significant advantage. Gaps between teams are likely to be larger than average: particularly at the beginning of the weekend. Making a strong start will therefore give teams a good chance of overhauling their immediate rivals. With only a handful of the current drivers on the grid having competed here in the past, in any racing formula, the relatively unknown nature of the track could prove something of a leveller.
Simulation Approaching a relatively unknown venue such as that seen in Austria requires a significant amount of simulation work. Time spent in the DIL (Driver in the Loop) Simulator is key to providing the most accurate set of data possible, as this is what the team will work from heading into the opening practice sessions. While modern simulation tools are sufficiently accurate to provide a solid baseline, there are some subtleties which cannot be accounted for. Knowledge of how old the tarmac is, how different the grip is at different points around the circuit, how the track surface and balance will change over the course of the weekend and the race itself will only be revealed as running progresses. Teams must therefore glean all of this information during Friday and Saturday. This will likely lead to increased track time during practice sessions.
srentrap munitalp duorp ruO ™
ytiruceS enO-nI-llA
Circuit Layout Similar to the last race in Montreal, this is a high power sensitivity circuit with a low number of corners and multiple straights. This style of track layout also exemplifies fuel efficiency: both characteristics which play to the strengths of the Mercedes-Benz Power Unit. Much the same as in Montreal once more, braking stability is essential. Of the ten corners around the circuit, seven are classed as braking events: three of which are heavy. Turn One is a fantastic corner: comparable in many ways to its counterpart in Austin. The severity of the gradient may not appear too great on television, but in reality it’s a tricky right-hander with a blind turn-in, rising quite sharply uphill. While Turn One in Austin is certainly steeper, this is much more off-camber and much more blind to the driver, making it really quite exciting.
