A man in the spotlight To say that the sharks are circling around Mark Webber’s Formula 1 career right now is an understatement.

Rumours that the now 36-year-old would hang up his helmet at the end of his current one-year deal with Red Bull Racing were rife before the season even started, as was talk that he could end up in Porsche’s Le Mans prototype program. Now it seems that every time the Australian has a bad race, reports will surface that he is ‘definitely’ out of Red Bull and F1 for 2014. Post-Shanghai Suggestions in the media that there is a conspiracy against Webber within Red Bull Racing, causing the issues such as his lack of fuel in qualifying and wheel departure in the race, isn’t an entirely fresh strand of news, either. While there are undoubtedly factions at Red Bull that would prefer to see Sebastian Vettel win championships than Webber, any journalist who seriously believes that a three-time reigning Constructors’ Championship winning team would sabotage one of its cars such that it does not finish is perhaps in need of a holiday themselves. The conspiracy-type talk is at least a departure from much of the glass-half-full coverage that Webber’s career seems to have attracted in Australia’s general press over the years. The most recent Australian Grand Prix was a clear case in point, where some appeared way to quick to condemn Webber for a tardy start that had, as it turned out, been caused by electronic issues. In all, it’s a great pity that, barring a surprise move to another team in coming seasons, Webber’s F1 tenure will largely be remembered for being Vettel’s ‘number two’. Few drivers in history have ever dominated their team-mates like Webber did in his early years at Minardi and Jaguar, while some of his efforts in below-par Williams equipment, particularly at the granddaddy of all unforgiving circuits, Monaco, were simply inspired. This is why, in the midst of the current shenanigans, this Race Guide celebrates Webber’s 200th Grand Prix start with a look back at 10 of his mightiest moments in F1.

Mighty Mark Moments
Australia, 2002
S
We celebrate Mark Webber’s 200th Grand Prix start by looking back at his 10 mightiest moments since joining Formula 1 12 Our proud platinum partners seasons ago.
tarting with a bang Mark Webber enjoyed the rare distinction of having his first Grand Prix in his homeland. The then 25-year-old certainly made the most of it, scoring points with fifth place in a highly unfancied Minardi. A large portion of the field may have been taken out in a first corner pile-up, but Webber had to fight for his two points regardless - fending off a charging Mika Salo Toyota with his ailing Minardi-Asiatech. Having grafted his way through the junior formula in England before surviving a stint in sportscars and a bold return to Formula 3000, Webber had finally arrived in Formula 1.
Monaco, 2002
L
aying the foundations Taking the flag 11th out of 12 finishers after qualifying 19th may not sound like much, but Mark Webber’s performance on his first appearance at Monaco as a Grand Prix driver had the right people talking. The Australian’s qualifying effort was not only two seconds faster than that of team-mate Alex Yoong, but it was also enough to best the big-budget Jaguars of Pedro de la Rosa and Eddie Irvine. Passing de la Rosa on track in the race was the Sunday afternoon highlight at a venue that would provide plenty more memorable moments in the years to come.

M
oving to Jaguar for the 2003 season marked a step forward in the career of Mark Webber, but just how far forward remained unclear pre-season. A 14th on the grid in Melbourne proved an instant career best, but that would be smashed by a full 11 place just two races later in Brazil, where he lined up a 14 slots ahead of a once highly rated team-mate Antonio Pizzonia. Although the weather-hit race itself ended with a big accident for Webber, this is where the lad from Queanbeyan had his first look at the front of the F1 field.
Monaco, 2005
A
s the scene of his first Grand Prix podium finish, the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix should feature in any highlights package of Mark Webber’s career. The now Williams mounted Australian continued the outstanding form on the streets of the principality that he’d shown earlier in his career - starting and finishing third. It was somewhat of a bittersweet result however, as circumstances allowed team-mate Nick Heidfeld to jump him in the pits and eventually take second behind dominant winner Kimi Raikkonen.

full 40 races after his first podium, Mark Webber finished in the top three again at the 2007 European Grand Prix, this time driving a Red Bull. In a season plagued by unreliability, the Nurburgring race saw Webber hand Red Bull Racing - which had been borne out of the Jaguar operation - just the second podium of its three-season life. The race itself had been hit by rain late in the going, with Webber only just holding out his replacement at Williams, Alexander Wurz, by 0.3s.
Europe, 2009
T
he 2007 visit to Nurburgring proved Webber’s only podium in his first two seasons with Red Bull, but much had changed by the time the F1 circus returned to the famed venue in 2009. Widespread regulation changes and a bit of Adrian Newey magic helped Webber to four podiums in the first eight races, and when runaway points leader Jenson Button qualified back in the pack at Round 9 in Germany, Webber was there to pounce. Not even a clash with Rubens Barichello off the start and a subsequent drive-through penalty could stop Webber on this day - with a breakthrough victory the result.

recurring location in the story of Mark Webber’s magic moments, the 2010 edition of the Monte Carlo classic may well prove to be the greatest in the Australian’s career. Making the most of a brilliant Saturday pole position, Webber held his nerve in what turned out to be a series of sprints between Safety Cars on Sunday. The now seasoned campaigner eventually led team-mate Sebastian Vettel to the line under Safety Car conditions, drawing level with the German at the top of the points standings in the process.
or the second time in three years Mark Webber was the king of Monte Carlo, and again his victory came under immense pressure. This time though, it was not a series of flat out sprints but rather a measured drive that required Webber to manage the typically high Pirelli tyre degradation and late sprinkles of rain. As it had done so two years earlier, victory in Monaco served to bring Webber level with team-mate Vettel in the points standings after a consistent if not spectacular first phase of the season.

f there was a race outside of his home Grand Prix in Australia and the crown jewel of the calendar, Monaco, that Mark Webber wanted to win, it was undoubtedly the British Grand Prix. Not only is the English event steeped in Formula 1 history, but the Silverstone venue provided the scene for much of the locally based Webber’s junior career. The 2010 Silverstone win also proved a great spark for his title assault which had been dealt a heavy blow in the previous race when the Red Bull driver spectacularly backflipped his way over Heikki Kovalainen’s Lotus.

t the height of speculation that he was being head-hunted by Ferrari for the following season, Mark Webber put the Scuderia and its golden boy Fernando Alonso in their place at the British Grand Prix. Grudging the tyre conundrum to perfection, Webber was able to close on Alonso dramatically in the dying stages eventually snatching the lead with just two laps to go. Confirmation that Webber would remain at Red Bull Racing for another season came just days later.

Round 4 - Bahrain I Track Details
9
Bahrain International Circuit Technical preview with the Lotus F1 Team.
THE CAR Front wing Front wing settings are optimised around Turns 6 and 7. Rear wing Relatively high levels of downforce are required for Bahrain so the car runs with a lot of rear wing. Not to Monaco levels, but comparable amounts to Australia and Malaysia. High temperatures mean less dense and aerodynamically effective air to cleave. Brakes Bahrain is the first proper test of braking systems of the season. Long straights lead into slow corners, meaning brake temperatures and wear levels need close monitoring. Suspension There are reasonable traction demands here, so the suspension needs to sufficiently compliant for these requirements. Traction demands from the lower speed corners mean a focus on enabling maximum usage of the mechanical grip from the tyres. Kerbs are used in turn two in order to maximise straightline speed before turn three. The long kerb at the exit of turn 10 is generally avoided because its harshness can hurt traction.
www.speedcafe.com
Tyres Pirelli’s hard (orange) and medium (white) compounds are nominated here. Despite the circuit’s desert domain, the track is not as sandy as you may expect due to the circuit’s impressive track cleaner! The asphalt is has a high level of abrasion which gives good grip, but can lead to high tyre degradation. Engine Sand and speed summarise Sakhir from the engine point of view. Dust from the desert is blown onto the track; having too high a concentration of sand in the engine can cause significant wear to the engine internals. The four straights also demand good top end power.
Turn 4 Turn 4 is another overtaking opportunity, with heavy braking from the straight before and a wide entry and space on exit. Turns 6-7 Front wing is set to balance the car through Turns 6 and 7. Turn 10 The entry to Turn 10 is difficult. You need to be in the correct track position after Turn 9 and the unweighted inside wheel can easily lock-up. Sufficient speed needs to be carried through Turn 9 for the entry, but it’s easy to out-brake yourself here. There is a long serrated kerb at the exit to turn ten which is best avoided.
Our proud platinum partners
THE Circuit
Turns 14-15 Another heavy braking zone into the final corners, with the following straight meaning that any mistakes on entry are penalised by exit speed on to the main straight. Snap oversteer is a possibility through here, which can damage pace potential on the straight.
™
All-In-One Security
Turn 1 Heavy braking into Turn 1 means a good overtaking opportunity. No penalties for overshooting the corner (due to the tarmac run-off ) so over-optimism is not unduly curtailed. Exit of this corner calls for driver delicacy on the throttle when tyres are worn. Turn 2 The more kerb you can take at Turn 2, the more speed you can take down the straight which follows.
Start-finish straight Gearing for the straight is always a difficult call in Bahrain, as the wind can affect matters here. It’s also the first time that DRS will be used here as there was no race in 2011.
Round 4 - Bahrain I Bagman
10
The Bagman says...
T
he Formula 1 circus heads to its fourth race of the season with little separating the top four teams. Lotus, Red Bull and Ferrari have shared the victories between them so far, with Mercedes also proving a strong threat. Ferrari and, in particular, Fernando Alonso, made the best of the tyre shenanigans last weekend in Shanghai, and the Italian team has a particularly strong record in Bahrain. Ferrari has won three of the last five races held at Sakhir, which has traditionally been
one of Felipe Massa’s best venues. The Brazilian has shown greatly improved form this year, and could be a real dark horse for the win. How the teams deal with the tyre conundrum will, as usual, determine the final result. Originally slated to bring soft and hard compounds to Bahrain, Pirelli has erred on the side of caution by swapping the option compound to the medium. This will most likely play into the hands of Ferrari and Red Bull, which have both
found it particularly difficult to come to terms with the soft. Lotus, by contrast, has proven the most adept with the soft, so may be comparatively disadvantaged. That’s not to rule Kimi Raikkonen out of the reckoning for the win, however, as the black and gold entries were very quick in Bahrain last year. The Finn’s drive to second in China was especially impressive too considering the damage sustained to his car in an early collision with Sergio Perez.
