RICCIARDO’S ROUGH WELCOME TO F1’S TOP TIER “It never rains but it pours...

MERCEDES: CATCH US IF YOU CAN After back-to-back victories, Mercedes are most definitely sitting pretty...

Mercedes magic set to continue

T

he epic start to the season enjoyed by Mercedes shows no signs of slowing up in Bahrain. The $64million question is just how long will the Brackley-based operation have to bask in its new found glory amid the most sweeping technical regulations in the sport’s modern history? Lewis Hamilton led home team-mate Nico Rosberg for a Mercedes quinella at Sepang but the development race led by Red Bull appears to have stepped up more rapidly than the opening race in Melbourne last month suggested. Sebastian Vettel’s ability to climb onto the Sepang podium proves that Red Bull’s learning curve with the new hybrid systems linked to the 1.6-litre V6 turbo charged powerplants could have the champion team in a position to challenge much earlier than its team principal Christian Horner first indicated. For the moment though, Mercedes has lived up to its marauding pre-season form. The good news is that Williams appear to have validated its pre-season form, proving it is well and truly on the way back to being a competitive force.

www.speedcafe.com

Ferrari, too, seem to be quickly overcoming its assorted problems which include the brake-by-wire system as proven by Fernando Alonso’s strong finishing fourth place. McLaren remain in the mix, after the qualifying gamble by Jenson Button to run qualifying on intermediate tyres. Button made up a few places to finish sixth while his rookie team-mate Kevin Magnussen showed prodigious raw pace to recover from an early mistake with Kimi Raikkonen although ending a lap down.

A

fter back-to-back victories, Mercedes are most definitely sitting pretty heading into this weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix, but how long will their domination last? The Brackley-based squad has more than flexed its muscles by successfully converting their impressive pre-season testing form into dominant victories in Australia and Malaysia, with drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. As a result Mercedes’ position in the championship standings is impressive, but despite the sizeable advantage accrued, the squad cannot afford to relax. Malaysian GP winner Hamilton has already praised his team for the explosive start to F1’s new turbo engined era, claiming the W05 is the best car he has driven in his entire career.

Round 3 - Bahrain Grand Prix I Cover Story

Its a strong statement from the 2008 world champion considering a mechanical failure forced him into a retirement after just three laps at Albert Park. However, what is worrying for the rest of the paddock is the Brit is adamant there is much more performance to come from the car. “I am so proud of this team – what a great job they have done collectively. I would have to say this is the best car I have ever driven,” said Hamilton. “I am sure there are things we can improve. I have learnt so much to take into the next race.” “What is - and was - the most important thing is that I feel really comfortable in this car. Remember, last season I sometimes said that I felt uncomfortable in the car but that is all history. “Considering that I had one win and some good results in 2013 in a car that didn’t suit me perfectly, I am very much looking forward to how this season progresses.” Although Mercedes secured pole position and a one-two finish at Malaysia, there were signs that the rest of the field are beginning to close the gap.

Red Bull on a charge Experts predicted it would take Red Bull at least six races before they could challenge the front runners, but after two races the world champion team have proved the doubters wrong. Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel have seemingly banished the memories of a disastrous pre-season testing program, after driving to podium finishes on the road

at Albert Park and Sepang. Vettel produced a strong drive to third in Malaysia, while Ricciardo was disqualified from a flawless drive to second in Melbourne. It is not only Red Bull’s race trim that has impressed as the RB10 has shown it possesses head turning outright pace too, which will worry Mercedes. Vettel came perilously close to securing his first pole position of the season last time out, losing out to Hamilton by just five hundredths of a second.

Round 3 - Bahrain Grand Prix I Cover Story

The rapid improvement of the RB10 has clearly pleased the four-time world champion, who believes his team have Mercedes locked in their sights and are already winning the development race. “It has been very positive what we have done since then [testing], a massive job from the team, massive job from Renault - both pushing really flat out - but there is still a long way to go,” Vettel told Sky Sports F1. “We can see that the others, especially these guys [Mercedes] are quite a bit ahead, a little bit quicker than us and always have enough in hand to respond, so it is up to us how quick we manage to come back, but for sure it is not easy when you start on the back foot.

FLASHBACK

“At the moment, though, it looks like we are making bigger steps than them and let’s hope it continues like that. “One and a half months ago we were far away from doing ten laps in a row and today we finished the race on one of the most critical races of the year in terms of temperature and stress to the car, so we are very happy on that front.” Vettel’s words will certainly be ringing in the ears of Mercedes bosses all too clearly as they know how quickly the game can turn in F1. Last year, Toto Wolff’s team produced arguably the fastest car at the start of the season, which took three victories before the squad lost crucial ground in maintaining its development. The result saw the team secure just three

podium finishes in the second half of the campaign. “These guys [Mercedes] have done a very good job and they completely deserve to be where they are now,” Vettel added. “We are a strong team and you can see that by the pace and results we had at the first two grands prix, so from my point of view it is a question of time.” Red Bull are not the only team rallying its troops to take on Mercedes. The might of Ferrari and McLaren are no strangers to the development race and are more than capable of closing the gap. With this in mind, the ever changing nature of F1’s battle ground will surely serve up an intriguing Bahrain Grand Prix.

Bahrain Grand Prix 2004 Exactly 10 years ago this weekend Michael Schumacher and Ferrari obliterated the field to win the inaugural Bahrain Grand Prix. The victory was Schumacher’s third consecutive triumph at the start of the 2004 season as he took the chequered flag from team-mate Rubens Barrichello. BAR Honda’s Jenson Button claimed the final spot on the podium a full 26

seconds behind the Prancing Horse duo. Schumacher went on to claim his seventh and final world championship title that season. The first corner of the Sakhir circuit has been named in honour of Schumacher for this year’s event, while the F1 legend remains in a coma in hospital, following an horrific skiing accident on December 29.

Round 3 - Bahrain Grand Prix I Secondary Lead

“It never rains but it pours” is the phrase that comes to mind to describe Daniel Ricciardo’s start to life at Red Bull Racing. The Australian is sitting at the bottom of the championship standings after enduring the highest of highs and lowest of lows in just two Grand Prix. After suffering a disqualification from an impressive second place finish at his home event at Albert Park, Ricciardo was hoping to put his bad luck to bed in Malaysia last weekend. However, lady luck was not on Daniel’s side and instead he appeared to inherit the kind of misfortune which seemingly always plagued his predecessor Mark Webber. While running strongly in fourth position at Sepang, the 24-year-old’s opportunity to land a solid points finish unravelled in a flash. At his third scheduled pit stop, he was released without his front left wheel fastened sufficiently, requiring to be pushed back to his bay before rejoining the race. Shortly after he served a drive-through penalty for an unsafe pit release, he suffered a front wing failure and puncture which forced him into retirement. To add insult to injury, he received a 10 place grid penalty for this weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix as further punishment for the unsafe pit release stipulated by the 2014 Formula 1 rules. With an FIA appeal hearing regarding his AGP disqualification due to be heard in Paris on April 14 hanging over his head, its certainly been a rough start to life at F1’s sharp end.

Despite the misfortune, Ricciardo can take many positives from his first two races at Red Bull. The Western Australian showed last weekend he is not just going to play wingman to his four-time world champion team-mate Sebastian Vettel, after triumphing in a wheel-to-wheel battle with the German in the early stages at Sepang. His actions provided a clear statement to Vettel, who will surely be a little concerned by the pace of his new colleague. Although yet to score any points, Ricciardo is determined to become a force to be reckoned with at the front. “I think I’ve come out the first two races how I wanted to, in a way,” said Ricciardo. “I still want to improve, but we’ve started off on the right foot, so for that I’m pleased

11

and with a little bit of luck we’ll turn things around soon and I’ll get some points. “I love racing up the front, it’s been a privilege so far and a lot of fun in the last couple of races. It’s a bit addictive actually, I want more, so you’ll see me up there plenty of times this year.” Ricciardo has already shown enough to convince Red Bull team boss Christian Horner that he has two guys capable of challenging at the front. “I think Daniel’s clearly shown his potential and that the Australian GP wasn’t a one off; it’s great to have two guys pushing like they are”, said Horner. It will be interesting to see over time whether Ricciardo will prove to be a thorn in Vettel’s side.

As a modern track with an equal balance between straights and tight corners, Sakhir is a fairly medium-demand circuit. A smooth, neutral PU set up will really pay dividends as some of the corners – particularly in the back section from T4 to T9 – roll into each other. As at all tracks, the challenge is to have the correct balance between energy management and driveability. We also need to play particular attention to the cooling since the Bahrain desert can reach up to 45°C. With cooling requirements already at a premium with the high rotational speeds of the turbocharger and MGU-H, adding extra external temperatures will make engine cooling a priority task on the job list.

Round 3 - Bahrain Grand Prix I Bagman and Entry List

16

The Bagman says...

M

ercedes’ Malaysian Grand Prix one-two finish may have looked convincing on paper but the rest of the paddock is beginning to close the gap in terms of performance. Silver Arrows drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton have dominated the opening two Grand Prix, but their advantage is decreasing with Red Bull emerging as the team with the most threatening challenge. Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel narrowly missed out on pole last weekend and his RB10 proved to be the best of the

rest as he secured third. After such a slow start to the season in testing, the Milton Keynes squad have clawed back the shortfall at a phenomenal rate. Expect Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo to be hassling the two Mercedes on Sunday, although the West Australian will be hamstrung by a 10 place grid penalty. Ferrari cannot be ruled out either despite the F14 T lacking outright pace. Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen have shown the car is strong in terms of reliability and it won’t be long before an improvement in pace follows. Williams were unable to repeat the strength they showed in Melbourne at Sepang. However, the Grove outfit starred

in pre-season testing at Bahrain, suggesting Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas could well be a factor at the Sakhir circuit. Likewise, Force India flexed their muscles in pre-season testing at the venue in February and in Nico Hulkenberg they have a potential podium contender. A mixture of poor strategy calls and errors hampered McLaren in Malaysia but with updates continuing to arrive from Woking, the squad will be in the mix this weekend. Elsewhere, Lotus showed encouraging signs in Malaysia with Romain Grosjean securing the team’s first finish of the season. The team’s fortunes can only improve in Bahrain.
