There’s no doubt that, from a neutral’s perspective, a Lotus victory in this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix would be a great result. Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean gave the team an impressive double-podium in Bahrain, where Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing made it four different winning constructors in the first four races. With McLaren (Australia), Ferrari (Malaysia) and Mercedes (China) having already won this year, it appears up to Lotus to extend the streak to five from five. Such a result would equal the mark set by the extraordinary 1983 season, which began with wins from Brabham, McLaren, Renault, Ferrari and Williams, and ended with eight different drivers having won races. The competitiveness and unpredictability of this year’s field may well see the latter mark surpassed or at least equalled too. Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber, who coincidentally won the final two races of last season, are yet to hold a winner’s trophy in 2012, while the two Lotus drivers are also realistic chances. The pairing of Raikkonen and Grosjean has so far worked beautifully, with the young charge learning from the champion’s experience, and the champion likewise finding motivation in the quest to match the young charge’s raw speed.

Raikkonen: We can win Flying Finn ready to go one better in Spain

Having taken just four races to return to the Formula 1 podium, Kimi Raikkonen has his sights firmly set on victory in this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix. Following a two year lay-off from Formula 1, Raikkonen has found himself with a tidy Lotus package beneath him this season. Bouncing back from a strategically error in China that saw the 2007 World Champion drop from second to 14th in the closing stages, Raikkonen pushed eventual winner Sebastian Vettel all the way in Bahrain three weeks ago to record a second place finish. Raikkonen’s team-mate Romain Grosjean ensured the formerly Renault branded team scored its first double-podium in six years.

It’s been an impressive turnaround for the Enstone-based squad, which struggled through 2011 following a pre-season injury to its star driver Robert Kubica. According to Raikkonen however, the result in Bahrain should not have been a surprise to anyone in the team. “I never had any doubts in myself and it is clear we have a good car so in some ways the podium could have come sooner,” he reflects. “We had the car already in the first three races to be up there, but we made some small mistakes and it cost us a lot. “I would have been much happier if we had managed to get the victory, but nevertheless it’s a good result and the team deserved it for all their hard work. We have been good in every race so far, so hopefully

we will be regular visitors to the podium this season.” Looking specifically to this weekend’s race at Barcelona, Raikkonen believes that his Lotus E20 will be good enough to take him to a third career Spanish Grand Prix victory. “I expect Lotus to be very competitive at Barcelona,” says Raikkonen. “It’s going to be very, very close between the top teams. This is the only circuit where the teams have already tested with the new cars, and the set up is crucial as the track changes with the wind and temperature. All the teams have updates for the first European race, which makes it even more interesting and even tighter at the top. “The car feels good everywhere we’ve been

so far,” he added. “I am here to race and I race to win. That is the target for me and the team. We want to win Grands Prix. We have a good car and we saw in Bahrain it is good enough to win. That’s the target.” All of the leading squads are expected to bring new parts to the first European race of the season, with the three-days of running at Mugello - Formula 1’s first in-season in four years - allowing teams to refine their new packages. Although focussing on detailed suspension analysis rather than introducing major upgrades in Italy saw Raikkonen elect to skip the test, team technical director James Allison says there will be several new pieces to look out for on the Lotus’ this weekend. The squad has recently spent time in the United States of America, using Windshear’s 290km/h rolling road wind tunnel in North Carolina. “We will bring the first tranche of gains from our Windshear programme in addition to some parts from our conventional wind tunnel development. There will be modifications to the front and

rear drums, to the front wing and to the floor,” confirms Allison. “We saved for Mugello certain tests that are too elaborate to do on a Grand Prix Friday, because the modifications take too long. On both of the dry days we ran one fundamental configuration in the morning before switching to a different fundamental configuration in the afternoon. Then, within each morning or afternoon session there was a constellation of smaller tests, that could be made independently of the major morning to afternoon assessment. This has allowed us to answer some questions which have been bugging us for a while and it gives us a good direction for our future campaigns.” While Raikkonen is bullish about challenging for victory this weekend, Allison’s optimism comes with a proviso. The season so far has been dominated by tyres, with the relative performances of the McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes and Lotus in particular swinging dramatically depending track temperatures. Lotus’ fortunes in Spain may well hinge on the Catalonian capital producing warm conditions at the weekend. “All you can try to do is to have as wide an

operating window as possible in which the car performs well, to make best use of the tyres available,” says Allison of how the current generation of Pirelli tyres need to be managed. “All tyres have an operating range and if you are lucky, or if you’ve got a good car, then it’s possible to get the tyres in their operating range most of the time. “The type of things that allow you to be in the operating range are: having good usable downforce, having a mechanical suspension package that’s not abusive to the tyres, and having drivers who are very sympathetic to the needs of the tyres and don’t damage them unnecessarily. Every team is trying to achieve all those things, and we’re no different. “I take some comfort from the fact that in the first four races this year, with the exception of Friday morning in Shanghai when it was really quite cold – we seem to have been sensibly inside the working range of the rubber. That’s four quite different tracks with a range of track temperatures and roughness’s - so we’re fortunate that the window seems quite broad for the E20.”

THE CAR Rear wing Similar levels of downforce are required to Bahrain, which is a little bit higher than Shanghai. A reasonably long straight here means an effective DRS systems helps, even though the straight isn’t as long as that seen in China. Brakes There are no real issues with braking at all here. The demands are not great and testing here means we know what to expect. It will be a case of tuning our front and rear ducts to achieve the correct temperatures for best braking performance, with no particular concerns over wear. Suspension It’s a track we know well from testing, but the main difference with the race is that the track temperatures will be much higher, meaning the tyres will work differently. Setups used in winter testing to make the tyres warm-up quicker will not be needed. There is no particular kerb usage so the car can run lower than otherwise. Turn 16 is the essential corner; if you have a good car through here, it maximises the run down the long straight. In qualifying it’s pretty much a flat out corner but with high fuel and a bit of tyre degradation it becomes more tricky.

Tyres Pirelli’s P Zero Yellow Soft and P Zero Silver hard tyres will be nominated. Barcelona can be tough on tyres due to the circuit layout and track surface abrasion. The long, fast turn 3 puts a particularly heavy load on the left front tyre. Turn 5 can also present locking of the front tyres caused by braking and turning into the corner as the road falls away from the car. Front wing Sufficient front wing is required to eliminate understeer through the first and final turns. Engine Good driveability from the engine is needed, particularly during the lower speed corners in the second half of the lap.

THE CIRCUIT Turns 1 & 2 This is a quick part of the circuit with a swift change of direction in between the first two bends. Turn 1 is one of the few corners on the track where overtaking is possible. Carrying high speed from the exit of Turn 2, combined with a good line heading into the very quick Turn 3 is crucial to a good lap time. Turn 3 The high speed nature of Turn 3 puts a lot of stress through the tyres, especially the front left.

Turn 4 Similarly Turn 4 is another which places heavy demands on the tyres (again predominantly the front left), with the car turning and breaking from high speed into the tight bend. Turn 5 With downhill braking into this corner it’s very easy to lock the front tyres - as the driver brakes and turns inwards the road falls away from the car, so the inside front tyre can easily lock. Turn 10 The slowest corner on the track, Turn 10 is a good test of the car’s traction. With high fuel loads this will be taken in first or second gear, followed by a wide exit into Turn 11 which is taken flat out. Turns 14 & 15 A more technical part of the track here with some large kerbs which drivers are advised to avoid. The car is not set-up to use these kerbs. Turn 16 It’s essential to have a good car through Turn 16 to maximise the run down the long straight. In qualifying it’s taken pretty much flat out, but with high fuel and a bit of tyre degradation it becomes more tricky. Start-finish straight The track surface is quite abrasive, meaning the tyres get a double whammy as the circuit layout puts them through their paces too.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Sebastian Vettel heads to the Spanish Grand Prix back on top of the championship standings after taking Red Bull’s first win of the season in Bahrain. It was a classic Vettel performance too, controlling the race from pole position. Although the team has dominated at Barcelona for the last two seasons, another victory this weekend is far from certain. Apart from in Bahrain, the RBR8 has not been a pacesetter this year,. By its own admission, the Milton Keynes squad still has work to do.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... McLaren will be out to prove this weekend that its nightmare Bahrain Grand Prix is behind it. The race again saw the team plagued by pitstop issues, which cost both drivers dearly. Even with clean stops, however, extreme thermal degradation on the MP427s rear tyres dictated that Lewis Hamilton would have finished around 40s adrift of fellow front-row starter Sebastian Vettel. On the positive side, Hamilton has yet to qualify off the front-row this season - a trait that will serve the Briton well if he can continue the trend at the notoriously difficult to pass Barcelona venue.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... While all the leading teams will bring upgrades to Barcelona, Ferrari is undoubtedly the one to watch. The Scuderia unashamedly used its political influence to ensure the recent in-season test took place at its beloved Mugello, and was hard at work over the three-days evaluating upgrades to its exhaust and sidepod packaging. The team is likely to arrive in Spain with even more new pieces, which could be raced pending their Friday performance. It must be said, however, that Barcelona rarely flatters those playing catch-up. With qualifying averages of 9.8 and 13.5 respectively so far this season, it’s likely to be another tough weekend for Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa.

Just one weekend after a breakthrough victory in Shangahi, the Silver Arrows appeared dominant on Friday at the Sakhir circuit, before failing to capitalise on the potential in qualifying, and then downright struggling in the race. The contrasting fortunes between Shanghai and Bahrain suggest that the team’s chances this weekend ride largely on climate, with cool conditions required for a strong challenge.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Lotus can head to Barcelona with confidence following its double-podium in Bahrain. Crucially, the E20 has shown decent qualifying speed and tyre life across all tracks and temperatures experienced so far this season, save for the unusually cool conditions seen briefly in China. Kimi Raikkonen has talked up his chances of figuring strongly in Spain, but one should expect his younger team-mate Romain Grosjean to be equally as competitive. The Frenchman was overtaken by Raikkonen during the Bahrain race largely due to the tyre strategies that had fallen out of Grosjean’s superior qualifying position. Both drivers should be aiming to see the podium again this weekend.

The VJM05 sported new nose and exhaust solutions during the Italian test, with the latter including underbody turning vanes similar to that seen on the Red Bull. Although not all of its updates will be raced at Barcelona, Force India can expect more points this weekend, especially from Paul di Resta. The Scot made Q3 for the first time in 2012 at Sakhir, before making an unfancied two-stop strategy work to score for the third time in four races.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Sauber’s failure to score a single point in Bahrain came in stark contrast to the Swiss team’s heroics in Sepang just two races earlier. Both Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi suffered from poor opening laps at Sakhir, with neither showing the pace required to recover the situation. The team is another expected to introduce several updates at Barcelona, having tested new frontwing, exhaust and sidepod designs at Mugello. It is expected that the squad will race with the majority of its new parts following positive feedback from its drivers. The competitive nature of the 2012 grid however means that a return to the points should not be assumed.

The gap between Toro Rosso young guns Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne was at its widest so far this season on Saturday in Bahrain, where the Australian impressively put his STR7 on the third row of the grid. Although the Grand Prix itself soon turned into a disaster, Ricciardo has performed strongly in junior categories at Barcelona, and insists he has learned from the experience. By contrast, Vergne’s Sakhir qualifying performance saw the Frenchman miss Q2 for the third race in succession. Vergne’s qualifying average of 16.5 is currently 4.5 places worse than his teammate’s - an issue that will need to be addressed if a maiden points scoring run is to be produced.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Williams’ dream start to the season came crashing down in Bahrain, where neither Bruno Senna nor Pastor Maldonado made it to the finish, forget about scoring points. While the problems that took the two cars out of the race (a vibration for Senna and puncture related damage for Maldanado) are not systematic issues, a lack of qualifying speed is. Save for Maldonado’s effort in Australia, the team has not seen Q3 this season. Williams can only hope that its Barcelona upgrades provide a boost in one-lap speed relative to its midfield rivals.

Caterham continues to sit behind Marussia in 11th in the Constructors’ Championship as its two drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov look to better Timo Glock’s 14th place finish at Albert Park. Although Kovalainen took advantage of issues for Michael Schumacher and Jean-Eric Vergne to make Q2 in Bahrain, Caterham has lost ground relative to the midfield in comparison to last year, and will again be in for a tough run this weekend. Like many of the teams, Caterham’s focus currently revolves around getting a better aerodynamic affect from its exhaust package. The arrival of former McLaren-man John Iley later this month will no doubt boost this squad.

Having skipped Formula 1’s first in-season test in four years to, in team principal Luis Perez-Sala’s words, “rest a bit”, the team heads to its home race with a handful of untested upgrades to try. The MR01’s reliability record received its first in-race blemish when Charles Pic was forced to retire with an engine problem, while perhaps more worryingly, Timo Glock’s car was plagued by handling problems in both qualifying and the race. Out-qualifying both HRTs this weekend does not appear the formality that it was at the start of the season.
