ormula 1 emerges from its mid-season break with little clarity on possible driver changes for 2015. At the height of possible moves is whether or not Jenson Button will remain with McLaren. The Woking team moves to Honda power next year and there is considerable chatter that Button could be on the move. Ferrari, too, is said to be exploring its options after the uneasy return of Kimi Raikkonen to the Maranello squad. Force India incumbent Nico Hulkenberg has been linked with a possible switch to Ferrari. There also remains conjecture whether Romain Grosjean will continue for a fourth season with Lotus. While Mercedes have been far and away the standout team, the year has seen some remarkably mature and skillful driving from Red Bull’s Toro Rosso acquisition Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian has been highly rated in his move as Sebastian Vettel’s team-mate, bagging wins each in thrilling circumstances at Canada and Hungary.

Hamilton assessed firm odds-on favourite for Spa L

ewis Hamilton remains a raging favourite in the red to climb back into winning form at the Belgium Grand Prix. Hamilton, third at the previous two races, is a cramped $1.63 chance to claw his way back into title contention. Team-mate Nico Rosberg was fourth at the previous race at the Hungaroring, one place behind Hamilton who produced a monumental drive after starting from the pit lane. After his stunning late race overtaking moves to claim the Hungarian GP win, Daniel Ricciardo is on the third line of betting at $13. It was Ricciardo’s second victory of the year following his late move to pounce on the lead to win the Canadian Grand Prix in early June. The improving Williams driver Valtteri Bottas is a $17 chance while Ricciardo’s team-mate Sebastian Vettel is at $23 to repeat his win at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit from last year. Bottas’ team-mate Felipe Massa and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso are the only other two drivers under triple figure odds at $34 each.

Ricciardo and Mercedes emerge as Formula 1’s star performers T

he biggest set of regulation changes in the sport’s history has already ensured that the 2014 season is one of the most intriguing on record. Efficient 1.6 litre turbocharged engines have replaced the ageing V8s providing a new soundtrack, while the cars have undergone an aesthetic makeover. The result has been a reset for the entire field with Red Bull, the dominant force of the previous four years replaced by the new superpower in Mercedes. While Mercedes have won nine of the 11 races, the stranglehold has produced a gripping title battle between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. The new regulations has also helped bring a new wave of young drivers to the fore highlighted by the rise of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, Williams Valtteri Bottas and Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat. There is no doubt the scene has changed but the racing remains as intense as ever. As the season enters its second half, Speedcafe.com has run the rule over how the teams and drivers have performed thus far.

his opposite number in the championship. Ricciardo’s feats in a car which is clearly slower than the pace setting Mercedes has convinced some pundits that the Australian will contend for world titles in the future. Speedcafe Rating: 9/10

Star Team - Mercedes Speedcafe Rating: 9/10 Mercedes clearly absorbed all aspects of the sports’s new 2014 regulations to deliver the championship’s best car in the W05. From the opening day of pre-season testing, Mercedes have led the way and this dominance was translated to the races leaving the rest of the field in their wake. With drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico

Star Driver - Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) Daniel Ricciardo has not only emerged as this season’s surprise package but a world champion in the making. The Western Australian, brought in to replace the retiring Mark Webber, started the campaign with experts unsure as to how he would cope driving for a top F1 team having previously driven for Toro Rosso and Hispania. Question marks also surrounded how he would perform alongside a four-time world champion in Sebastian Vettel. Despite a troubled pre-season which saw the world champion team struggle for both pace and reliability, Ricciardo dominated his illustrious team-mate from the opening race in Australia. Since then he has recorded two victories in Canada and Hungary and is currently the only man to defeat the all conquering Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. In contrast, Vettel has claimed just two podiums compared to Ricciardo’s five, which has left the German lagging behind

Rosberg, the team have won nine of the 11 races so far this year and threatened to go the year unbeaten before mechanical dramas allowed Daniel Ricciardo to end the winning run in Canada. While the Mercedes W05 is leading the field on pace, it has been hurt by reliability concerns. Rosberg and Hamilton have both encountered brake issues with the latter also suffering from a spectacular engine failure in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. The team has adopted an approach of allowing its two title contending rivals to race which has caused friction between the two team-mates most notably at Monaco. In hindsight Mercedes could have handled the situation better and it could easily rear its head again. From a driver point of view, Hamilton has been unlucky sharing the brunt of the mechanical failures but when on song he has proven difficult to beat, recording five wins to Rosberg’s four. However, Rosberg has come of age and proved this year that he is a worthy title contender, having beaten his world champion team-mate fair and square on the track.

to be sitting second in the constructors championship. The RB10 is fundamentally a quick car but has been let down by Renault’s struggles to deliver a powerplant equal to Mercedes. If more power can be gained in this department, they could easily challenge Mercedes on a regular basis. Ricciardo has led the way in unlocking the secrets of the car proving it is more than capable of winning races. Meanwhile, reigning world champion Vettel has struggled to perform in the RB10 leaving him often overshadowed by his less experienced team-mate. The German’s grip on the world title is loosening but he has shown signs of improvement.

Ferrari’s season so far will not have pleased the board at Maranello with just two podiums to show for their efforts. The departure of team manager Stefano Domenicali in April and the arrival of Marco Mattiacci was a sign the bosses are eager for change. The F14 T has struggled to match the pace of the Mercedes engined teams at times and even the underpowered Red Bull. A heavy powerplant has been one of many issues the team has had to deal with. However, its saving grace has been Fernando Alonso, who has once again been able to conjure up two podiums with machinery not equal to his rivals. His drive

Williams have certainly bounced back this season after several years in the doldrums. Aided by superior Mercedes power, the Grove squad made a slow start to the year but momentum has since shifted in their favour allowing the outfit to establish themselves as regular podium contenders, sitting fourth in the championship. New resources in the shape of former Renault F1 team principal Pat Symonds and ex-Ferrari race engineer Rob Smedley have also played their part in delivering a strong FW36.

Valtteri Bottas is another driver to burst onto the F1 scene this year. The team has rated the Finn highly for sometime but he has now showcased his potential with three podiums and 10 points finishes from 11 races. New recruit Felipe Massa has brought experience to the team but he has been in the wrong place at the wrong time too often. Despite, being overshadowed by his team-mate, he earned the team an impressive pole position in Austria. Valtteri Bottas Speedcafe Rating: 8/10 Felipe Massa Speedcafe Rating: 6/10

Force India-Mercedes Speedcafe Rating: 7/10 Force India will be delighted with the first half of the season having regularly beaten teams with much bigger budgets. The Silverstone-based outfit are fifth in the constructors standings and crucially ahead of giants McLaren. A fundamentally strong car and engine package has allowed them to deliver the heights of a third place finish in Bahrain courtesy of Sergio Perez. However, the key to their success has been the form of Nico Hulkenberg, who has finished all bar one race in the points. This run has caught the eyes of many teams in the paddock. Perez has impressed at times, most notably with a podium in Bahrain, but has lacked the consistency of his team-mate.

McLaren-Mercedes Speedcafe Rating: 5/10

Toro Rosso-Renault Speedcafe Rating 6/10

One of the biggest disappointments of the season has been the lack of pace from McLaren. After going a whole year without a podium last season, the squad were desperate not to repeat that feat. The team showed signs in pre-season that the troubles of 2013 were over but it proved to be a false dawn. A double podium at the opening race in Australia ended the podium drought but the team have been unable to repeat the feat. Strong reliability has helped the team score points regularly but they remain a shadow of their former selves. Considering the budget and resource McLaren can call upon, they risk another desperately below par season. Rookie Kevin Magnussen has impressed but he will need to harness his speed into consistency to ensure he remains with the team next year. Meanwhile, Jenson Button’s future at the Woking outfit isn’t secure although he has managed to squeeze the best out of the MP4-29.

Hamstrung by mechanical issues and a lack of power from Renault, Toro Rosso continue to contend for points finishes. Like sister team Red Bull, the squad encountered a difficult pre-season but since then have made rapid progress although reliability remains a concern. Jean-Eric Vergne has led the charge scoring 11 points, however his days at the team are numbered following the announcement that teenager Max Verstappen will replace the Frenchman next year. Team-mate and rookie Daniil Kvyat has impressed considering his lack of F1 experience after scoring points in his first two races.

Sauber’s fortunes have reversed in 2014 having established themselves as a regular points finishers over the last 10 years. A lack of stability under braking and power delivery issues from the Ferrari powerplant have hampered both Esteban Gutierrez and Adrian Sutil. The team are yet to qualify or finish a race inside the top 10. Sutil has had the measure of his teammate for the majority of the year but the team have plenty of work to do to recover the lost ground.

Its been another tough year for perennial backmarkers Caterham, which has resulted in team owner Tony Fernandes selling the team to a consortium of Swiss and Middle Eastern investors. Caterham came close to scoring their first points in Monaco when Marcus Ericsson finished in 11th spot. The new owners have already started to make sweeping personnel changes behind the scenes. Just this week regular driver Kamui Kobaysahi has been dropped for this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix in favour of experienced sportscar ace and F1 debutant Andre Lotterer. It remains to be seen how the new look Caterham squad will perform in the second half of the season.

FLASHBACK

Belgian Grand Prix 1994partners Our proud platinum Controversy surrounded the outcome of the 1994 Belgian Grand Prix as Damon Hill was awarded the victory after stewards excluded race winner Michael Schumacher. Although Jordan’s Rubens Barrichello scored a surprise pole position, Schumacher went on to dominate the race for Benetton after grabbing the lead from the Brazilian on the opening lap at Les Combes. Despite suffering a spin on lap 19, Schumacher managed to retain his advantage at the front, while Hill emerged as a contender for the race after team-mate David Coulthard allowed the Brit to move into second.

www.speedcafe.com

In the end, Schumacher went on to take the chequered flag from Hill and McLaren’s Mika Hakkinen. But the race wasn’t over as a post race stewards inquiry saw Schumacher excluded from the race due to excessive wear on his Benetton’s skid block. The stewards claimed the ride height of the German’s car was too low thus controvening the sport’s regulations. As a result, Hill was handed the victory with Hakkinen promoted to second, while Benetton’s Jos Verstappen was awarded the final spot on the podium. ™

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS CIRCUIT GUIDE †  ‰ „Š  ƒ

Circuit Layout Spa is a very different type of circuit to any other on the current calendar. It is very much a power-dominated track, with the high-speed nature of the layout very much playing to the strengths of the 2014 Power Unit. There are a number of long straights with a real mix of different corners throughout. Similar to Barcelona in many respects, albeit to a more exaggerated extent, each of the three sectors holds different demands. The first features a lot of fullthrottle content, the second a high quantity of technical corners with mid-level entry speeds and the third a mixture of fast curves capped off with a heavy braking zone to end the lap. Year in, year out, debate centres around whether the biggest advantage lies in reducing drag to increase overtaking opportunities down the straights, or in running slightly higher levels of downforce to increase performance through the corners. Qualifying also throws a different factor into the equation, as the use of DRS reduces the effect of a lower drag configuration - although, of course, in this case higher speeds can be reached before the DRS is activated. Setup In the same vein as the following race at Monza, Spa will see aerodynamic packages designed exclusively for this event. The circuit is sufficiently unique in terms of optimising the car that teams will go out

of their way to produce a special package for this race weekend alone. Whilst not necessarily affecting the larger outfits, this can work in one of two ways for the smaller teams on the grid. Some may choose not to pour resource into a single event, while others may take advantage of the opportunity to capitalise on the distinct nature of the circuit and gain an advantage over their rivals. This can lead to some interesting midfield battles that can potentially prove crucial come the end of the season, depending on whether a team gets it right or wrong.

the scale than that of last year, with the soft and medium compounds now nominated. In normal track temperatures these tyres should be well suited, however they may struggle if the track is cool. With the softer compounds in 2014, and the added punch of the new Power Units, we could see lap times falling nearer to the 2013 benchmark than at any other venue thus far in 2014 - perhaps even more so than in Bahrain, which has provided the closest comparison to date.

ERS

One of the key considerations at Spa invariably lies in the weather fronts, with significant swings in climatic conditions typically occurring year-on-year. Over the course of a race weekend, however, this will more often than not remain stable, with weather fronts tending to arrive for a sustained period - usually enough to cover the three days of on-track action at least. Throughout its many years on the calendar, the Belgian Grand Prix weekend has seen temperatures ranging from the lowest of the season all the way up to the high twenties, so the variations are quite significant. Rain is also a frequent feature - potentially forming around any one of the mountains in the region and producing very interesting races from a strategic perspective.

Spa presents an intriguing and almost unique scenario in terms of ERS usage. The regulations state that drivers can deploy a maximum of 4MJ of energy to the MGU-K per lap. However, some circuits feature a lap distance of around 4km, others up to 7km. Clearly, between these two different lengths of circuit, there is a significant delta in the power available to the driver per kilometre. Sitting at the top end of that scale, with a lap length around 30% higher than the normalised average, restrictions on ERS deployment will have a greater impact here than at most other circuits, with the Power Unit restricted from being utilised to its ultimate efficiency level.

Weather

Tyres As has been the case at a number of circuits this season, the tyre allocation for Spa takes a step towards the softer end of

After compiling three podiums in a row, was quite unlucky when he finished eighth in Hungary. Has really come of age in an at times extremely quick FW36. Good enough to seize on an opportunity if the usual suspects encounter problems.
