All eyes on the Aussie While the records and accolades continue to mount up for Sebastian Vettel, this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix is hugely significant for the other Red Bull star, Mark Webber, and his army of supporters. The fast sweeping Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo is the venue for the Aussie battler’s final Formula 1 race, bringing down the curtain on a remarkable 12 year career in motor racing’s top tier. It has certainly been a story full of twists, turns, ups and downs. One wonders what lies in store for Webber’s last hurrah. Webber is one of a dying breed of racing drivers who have battled their way to the top of the motorsport ladder. Over the years he has endeared himself to F1 fans the world over with his pure talent and his heart on the sleeve say what he feels nature. His attitude, skill and tales of success and woe have built him an army of fans in his homeland Australia and this has been replicated his adopted home country of England. It’s feat very few Aussie sportstars will ever achieve in the UK, which just goes to show how well liked he has become. It is fair to say Formula 1 will have a huge void to fill and both the sport and fans will probably miss him more than he will miss it. This week Speedcafe.com has delved into the archives to produce a definitive five part guide to Webber’s career uncovering his early beginnings right through to Formula One greatness. In this Race Guide, we take a look at just how talented a driver Webber has been over the last 12 years, using the only true talent barometer in the sport - a team-mate comparison. Webber has worked with and battled against nine team-mates at four teams and as the stats show more often than not he has come out on top. Although Sebastian Vettel has proven impossible to beat over the last eight races, don’t discount the chances of ‘Aussie Grit’ having the last laugh this weekend.

n decades to come, Mark Webber will be remembered by many as the man who came off second best in an intra-team rivalry with Sebastian Vettel. The duo have spent five seasons together at Red Bull in which the German has won the title four times and Webber has scored a season end best finish of just third. A total of 38 wins have fallen to Vettel, with just nine to Webber.
Speedcafe.com’s Tom Howard analyses just how Mark Webber stacks up against all of his Formula 1 team-mates
The coldness of that reality, however, belies the fact that the Australian will retire from a 12 season career in Formula 1 with a formidable record against his nine previous team-mates. Here we take a look back at Webber’s complete head-to-head statistics.
It was the first points finish for the team since 1999, a statement which underlined his talent. Shortly after the initial three race deal was extended to the full season. His team mate Alex Yoong, who provided vital Kuala Lumpa tourism dollars from his native Malaysia, provided little in the way of a battle for supremacy at the Italian squad. In the end, Webber scored a 100 percent
points share, out-qualified his team-mate at every race and recorded an impressive average finish of 11th position. He also out qualified rising star Anthony Davidson, who was brought in to replace Yoong for two races. As a result of Webber’s efforts, Minardi finished above Arrows and Toyota in the Constructors’ Championship.

Webber burst onto the Formula 1 scene in 2002 after landing an initial three race deal, brokered by manager Flavio Briatore, to join the Minardi team run by late Australian Paul Stoddart. He made an immediate impact by guiding his underpowered Minardi to finish an incredible fifth in the season opening Australian Grand Prix, endearing himself to his home crowd and F1 fans worldwide.

Jaguar Webber v Antonio Pizzonia/Justin Wilson (2003) Webber v Christian Klien (2004) Webber’s reward for a hugely impressive debut season was a lucrative deal to join Jaguar Racing, which lasted two years. The move to the Milton Keynes based squad, which has now morphed into Red Bull Racing, brought with it a much tougher challenge from the garage next to him. Highly rated Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia joined the team with high hopes after dominating junior formulas in the UK. Webber’s season started slowly but by

the third round in Brazil he showed his raw speed by topping the wet Friday qualifying session, ahead of the all conquering Ferraris. He went on to qualify third on the grid, which was Jaguar’s best result at the time in their four year history. Once again Webber ended the year with another 100 percent points share for the team racking up 17 points, which earned him 10th in the Drivers‘ Championship. His best finish was sixth compared to Pizzonia’s best of ninth. Pizzonia was completely outclassed by Webber in every area. In qualifying the Aussie won the head-to-head 13-3 and was only beaten in a race twice. Such was his dominance and the Brazilian’s lack of pace, Pizzonia was replaced mid season by Minardi driver Justin Wilson, but the Brit

also struggled against Webber. Perhaps the most impressive stats from Webber in 2003 were an average grid slot of 9.8 and average finish of 7.2, once again showing he was clearly outperforming both the car and his team-mates. In pace comparison, he was almost two seconds faster compared to Pizzonia. Jaguar’s form dipped in 2004 and they endured a difficult season with reliability. Despite this, Webber still showed glimpses of raw talent. This was once again shown in qualifying and in his duel with new teammate Christian Klien. In Malaysia, Webber achieved his best grid slot of his F1 career at that point when he split the Ferraris of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello to line up second. But it was against his team-mate where he really asserted himself as the number one driver for a third consecutive season. Despite both drivers recording a best finish of sixth, Webber won the qualifying battle 16-2, scored six more points than his rival and beat Klien 10-6 in races.

Experienced German Nick Heidfeld lined up alongside him for the majority of the year and provided an intense intra-team battle. For Webber, the season was his best yet recording 36 points and his maiden podium with a third place finish in Monaco where, frustratingly, he had finished one place behind Heidfeld. Heidfeld actually scored four more points than Webber during their battle and the German even snatched a pole position on home soil at the Nurburgring. He also eclipsed Heidfeld in average qualifying and average finish categories, but on pace comparison only 0.071s split the pair in the Australian’s favour. The change of engine supplier from the race winning BMW V10 to Cosworth power hurt Williams in 2006 and their form significantly suffered. However, Webber faced up against another new team-mate in the form of new GP2 champion Nico Rosberg. The son of former F1 world champion Keke, provided a close intra-team rivalry. Webber prevailed by outscoring his team mate by three points and he once again showed his qualifying prowess with a 12-6 score in the head-to-head. Rosberg was much closer in races managing to beat his

Webber v David Coulthard (2007-2008) Webber v Sebastian Vettel (2009-2013) Frustrated by a couple of difficult seasons at Williams, Webber moved back to the familiar surroundings of Milton Keynes to join Red Bull Racing. On paper his first two seasons presented his toughest team-mate battle yet, racing against 13-time Grand Prix winner David Coulthard. The Scot was coming to the end of his F1 career but still offered plenty of talent to worry most drivers. In 2007, Coulthard outscored Webber by four points but that was the only area he was superior. Qualifying belonged to Mark as he thrashed Coulthard 15-2, which he went on to better the following season. He also finished ahead in races 9-7. This dominance grew in 2008 with Webber enjoying a 72 percent share of the team’s points, beating the former F1 world championship runner-up convincingly in every category. Webber’s dominance in team-mate battles came to an end in 2009 with the arrival of Sebastian Vettel, although the year produced his maiden Grand Prix win in Germany. The German been the thorn in his side for the last five years and although the battles at times have been close, Vettel has come out on top in every category and subsequently won four world championships. The first two seasons of the rivalry proved to

Looking at the statistics, Webber’s record against team mates is up there against the very best in the sport. Only one of nine team mates has beaten him and he has clearly outperformed his machinery at times to embarrass rivals in the opposite end of the garage. Although helped by some mediocre rivals in the past, Webber has accrued a better overall average qualifying and race finish stat, when all his team mates results are combined. Amazingly from his 214 Grand Prix starts, he averages a 6.7 grid slot and race finish and he convincingly triumphs 125-89 in the qualifying battle. Vettel’s dominance has ensured that his team-mates shine through on wins, poles and points, but overall Webber has been three tenths quicker than his nine rivals. That’s a stat that even Mark would describe as “not bad for a number two driver.”

There is no hiding from the stats that Webber has certainly met his match against Vettel. However, it must be said that Mark has experienced more than his fair share of bad luck, mechanical failures and misfortune compared to his rival over the last five years.

Round 19 - Brazil I Track Details
11
AUTÓDROMO JOSÉ CARLOS PACE Technical preview with the Lotus F1 team
THE CAR Rear wing Downforce level is a little bit lighter than Texas or Abu Dhabi with the intention of maximising top speed on the long straight. Brakes There are no particular challenges for the brakes other than ensuring that temperatures remain relatively high at the end of the long straight, which forms the downhill entry into Turn 1. Suspension As we see so often in the current calendar, this is a compromise. The car needs to be strong in the high speed turns, but also have quick change of direction for the low speed Turns 8 & 9. Good traction is also required on exiting Turns 8, 9, 10 and particularly Turn 12 to maximise speed heading up the long hill on to the start / finish straight. Tyres As per last time out in Austin, the allocation here is once more the hardest in Pirelli’s arsenal with the medium and hard compounds elected. This is quite conservative and could make for a one

stop race depending on degradation levels. With a relative absence of high lateral loadings – discounting the final sector – Interlagos is not expected to be too demanding on the tyre structure. Front wing As there are some pretty quick corners, extra front wing is a consideration to balance the car. Turns where this is relevant include 4, 5, 6, 10, 11; all of which are quite challenging corners. Engine Interlagos is all about altitude. The track is 800m above sea level, meaning the RS27-2012 could be producing around 8% less power than at a sea-level race such as Korea. Over the course of the lap the track also undulates significantly, putting the oil and fuel systems under considerable pressure; particularly through the long final left hand corner onto the pit straight.
along the start/finish straight – which should boost passing opportunities into what is already a good spot for overtaking. Turns 2-3 It’s important to get a good exit from Turn 1; carrying the momentum on through Turn 2 into the high speed Turn 3 and on to the DRS straight. Turns 4-7 The first DRS zone along the back straight presents a good overtaking opportunity heading into Turn 4, which along with Turns 5, 6 & 7 is quite high speed before heading in to the lower speed Turn 8.

THE CIRCUIT Turn 1 A tricky downhill turn at the end of a long straight, the nature of the first corner makes it easy for drivers to out- brake themselves. This year also sees the addition of a second DRS zone – running for 500m

Turn 12 Turn 12 is crucial for a quick lap, with exit speed defining how fast you can charge up the hill and along the straight. Turns 13-15 The uphill section means high loads for the engine due to an altitude-induced oxygen deficit.
Round 19 - Brazil I Bagman
12
The Bagman says...
A
new record of eight consecutive wins in a season is a constant reminder that Sebastian Vettel is in the form of his life and the odds suggest he will break his own record in Brazil this weekend. However, Interlagos doesn’t ‘do predictable’ when you cast your eye over recent races at the Brazilian cathedral of motor racing. Surely Formula 1’s final race of 2013 must have a twist in the tail. The circuit is one of the few circuits where Mark Webber boasts a better win record than his four-time world champion team-mate Vettel. The Aussie has accrued two victories in the last four years and has proved to be quick there throughout his career. Just maybe, the Formula 1 gods will
shine down on Webber and grant him the fairytale end to his 12 year career. Meanwhile the fight to finish runner-up in the Drivers‘ Championship is now over with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso claiming the honour. After battling through pain to finish fifth in last week’s United States Grand Prix, the Spaniard could once again fire a warning sign to Vettel for the 2014 season. In doing so, he could help the prancing horse in their pursuit of second placed Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship. While Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg struggled to shine in America you can be sure they will be pushing hard this weekend to fend off Ferrari. But, it is the Lotus of Romain Grosjean which is creating the biggest headaches for the Red Bulls at the front. The Frenchman has been on the podium four times in the
last five races, ensuring he heads to Brazil as the most likely driver to upset the Red Bull applecart. Webber is not the only driver saying farewell in Brazil as Felipe Massa waves goodbye to Ferrari after eight years at the team. The local hero, who boasts two victories in front of his home crowd, will be eager to perform and could be a dark horse come Sunday. This is also the final chance for several drivers on the grid to impress prospective teams in a bid to a secure a race seat for 2014, which should guarantee plenty of action in the midfield. Wet weather often makes an appearance at Interlagos and the distinctive lack of wet weather running the teams have experienced this season could certainly spice up the action.
