ercedes-Benz resumed their in-house title fight in Austrian by claiming its sixth quinella in eight races this season. The Brackley team continue to hold a clear advantage over the field and its domination shows little sign of abating. Lewis Hamilton’s rocket start from ninth on the grid saw him put pressure on Nico Rosberg toward the latter stages before settling for second at the Red Bull Ring. There were clear signs from Williams that the Grove squad is returning to its best form in a number of years. The Martini-livered Mercedes-powered cars of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa claimed third and fourth, the first time Williams has transferred its promising preseason form into decent results. While Williams appear to be a long way off matching the winning class of Mercedes, the Austrian GP was a turning point.

Williams has emerged from the ruck as Red Bull continue with reliability issues. Despite Red Bull gun Daniel Ricciardo claiming the win in Canada, Williams is showing all the signs of becoming the team to most likely put any real pressure on the silver arrows.

Markets take a dramatic shift outside Mercedes M
ercedes returning to its normal behaviour in Austria sees Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg dominate the markets yet again. Hamilton continues to be an odds-on quote at $1.67 despite Rosberg ($2.40) seemingly continuing to have the wood on his team-mate. Little has changed between the two Mercedes combatants in price assessments however the same cannot be said for the rest of the field. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, the Canadian GP winner, has normally been kept in the low double figure bracket however he has now blown out to $21. On the same line as the Aussie are the two Williams drivers Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa. Interestingly Sebastien Vettel has eased to his longest price of the season at $34, the same as Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard is the last driver to be quoted at odds under triple figures with the remainder of the field quoted at $101 or more. In the event of Mercedes having a double failure there would seem to be some colossal value on offer.

Williams Awakening: F1’s sleeping giant back on the prowl M
oments of glory have been all but distant memories for Williams in recent times but one of Formula 1’s giants could be on the rise again. During the 1980s and 1990s, Frank Williams’ iconic team were world beaters, a dominant force in motor racing’s pinnacle, recording nine constructors titles and seven drivers championships. The last of which arrived in 1997 as French-Canadian Jacques Villeneuve powered his way to the title. However, since those halcyon days the Grove squad has been in steady decline over the last 10 years. Having produced world champions and pioneered F1 car design, the squad have found themselves resorting to pay drivers and propping up the back of the grid in recent times. While Pastor Maldonado’s fleeting victory in the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix provided a rare return to the limelight, Williams have now showed signs that the powerhouse is on its way back to the front with a double podium in Austria two weeks ago. The first signs of a revival emerged last

year when renowned former Benetton and Renault boss Pat Symonds announced plans to join the team as the new technical director. Former Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley followed Symonds with multiple race winner Felipe Massa also making the switch. Symmonds’ arrival coupled with the biggest regulation changes in the sport for some time offered the team a chance to
capitalise. And ever since the first pre-season test Williams have looked strong showing they have not only embraced the new regulations, but understood them to create a fundamentally good car in the FW36. This has been aided by the decision to run Mercedes power plants which have easily been the best engine on the grid. In the early rounds the car certainly www.speedcafe.com

showed impressive raw pace in the hands of drivers Massa and Valtteri Bottas, but it flattered to deceive in races. But last time out in Austria the stars aligned as Williams secured their first front row lockout since the 2003 German Grand Prix with Massa taking pole position. Both Bottas and Massa were in contention for the victory in the race but in the end they were left to settle for third and fourth behind the Mercedes duo. Amazingly the result was Williams’ first double podium since the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix. While one swallow doesn’t make a summer, deputy team principal Claire Williams believes the Austrian GP success is just the start of the team’s renaissance. “It’s been a combination of factors,” said Williams of the team’s turn around. “We had a great team before those guys came in, but it was a case of augmenting that with more support at a senior level.
“Having Pat (Symonds), Rob (Smedley) and a number of other guys behind the scenes as well who we brought in, supporting the talent we have, has been a game-changer for us,” “It’s all about momentum as well, and with team morale at a really high level now, it all goes to build to your position, and that is where we are as a team,” “There is so much positive momentum. We have to embrace that, capitalise on it so we make the most of it for the rest of the season. “Everyone believes this team can get back to the top, and you have to believe in that in order to do it.” The Austrian GP result has built up expectations for the squad’s home race at Silverstone this weekend, an event Williams have dominated in the past recording 10 victories. With Silverstone’s fast and flowing nature,

Williams will be confident they can repeat the form shown at the Red Bull Ring in Silverstone in front of their adoring fans. While it is difficult to predict exactly how they will fare this weekend, the tide is certainly turning in favour of the multiple world champions as they rise into a force once again.

British Grand Prix 1992 Mansellmania broke out once again at Silverstone as Nigel Mansell recorded a convincing victory in front of his home crowd at the 1992 British Grand Prix. The Williams driver completed a perfect weekend as he converted his pole position into a victory which saw him become the most successful British F1 driver of all time. Mansell’s 28th race win saw him overtake three-time world champion Jackie Stewart. The Brit proved to be the class of the field in qualifying as he was the only driver to lap in the 1m18s bracket. He

took pole by 1.919s from team-mate Riccardo Patrese. In the race Mansell was untouchable as he streaked to victory by almost 40 seonds from Patrese while Martin Brundle came home in third. Ayrton Senna, who qualified third, retired from fourth position with transmission failure which ended his title hopes. Mansell’s victory sparked wild scenes as spectators invaded the circuit with the crowds denying the Williams driver entry to the pit lane. He eventually amde it back to the pits so he could take part in the podium ceremony. ™

Silverstone celebrates 50th British Grand Prix T
his weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone marks a landmark moment in the circuit’s history with this year’s race the 50th at the venue. The Northamptonshire circuit is one of the founding pillars of Formula 1 and has continued to be one of the mainstays on the calendar providing countless iconic moments. Silverstone held its inaugural grand prix in 1948, run on the long 5.9km circuit in front of 100,000 spectators. It was won by Italian Luigi Villoresi in a Maserati, with his team-mate Alberto Ascari in second ahead of British driver Bob Gerard. Since Villoresi’s triumph, some of the sports all time greats have conquered the Silverstone circuit. Australia’s three-time world champion Jack Brabham, Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart tasted victory in the 1960s, while Emerson Fittipaldi and James Hunt triumphed in the 1970s. The 1980s saw Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna dominate the decade before Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve and

Circuit Guide Silverstone is one of the longest standing circuits on the calendar. Although it has been modified over the years, it has been a near-constant feature since the Formula One World Championship began. In terms of track layout, there are very few low-speed corners, with medium and highspeed turns prominent. This represents a different challenge to most venues visited so far this season. One of the interesting features of the current configuration is the new pit lane, which will see its third year of action in 2014. This is unusual in that it is slightly quicker to come through the first section of the pit lane to the timing line - even at the 80 km/h speed limit - than it is to stay out on the circuit, as the three corners of Vale, Club and Abbey are negated. Of course, the overall time through this sector is still higher when conducting a pit stop, but it is rare to see such a narrow differential in lap time between coming in and staying out. The circuit itself is frequently used throughout the year, making track evolution less of a feature than seen at many other venues over the course of a race weekend.
has there been a race weekend here that has not had rain-affected sessions at some stage during the weekend. In 2013, for example, both Friday sessions were wet, with Saturday practice starting dry and ending wet. Qualifying was also wet, but the race itself remained dry throughout. This makes judgement calls, on tyres in particular, difficult to predict. Going into the race last year, knowledge of how the dry tyres would perform and was a relative unknown. Variations in temperature can also be quite significant. It is not unusual to see ambient temperatures range from a low of 18 to a high of 27 degrees from one day to the next similar to the scale of fluctuations often experienced in Melbourne or Montreal, for example. With that in mind, cars cannot be setup and run as close to the limits as teams would ideally like in terms of cooling and so on.

Climate Weather conditions at Silverstone have historically been very inconsistent. Rarely
Safety Cars Safety cars have not traditionally been prevalent at Silverstone. It’s a wide circuit with a good amount of run-off around most corners, so there is generally plenty of space for stricken cars to pull off the track without interrupting running.
circuits such as Montreal, Silverstone sits amongst the top circuits on the calendar in terms of overtaking opportunities. The high-speed nature of the layout means that drivers must be bold, but there are several key areas around the track which lend themselves to passing manoeuvres. There are many corners where the drivers can carry plenty of apex speed, but also take a variety of lines - both through the turn itself and on exit. This is, essentially, what leads to overtaking. Tyres The hard and medium compounds have been nominated for this race. As demonstrated in 2013, this is one of the most demanding circuits on the calendar in terms of the energy being put through the tyres. It’s therefore necessary to have the hardest allocation available. There were a number of failures last season which, if they were going to happen anywhere, would always occur at Silverstone due to the nature of the track. The 2014 compounds are more conservative than those of 2013 and have been proven to work well at other circuits already this year - Sepang being a good example.
