HUGE VALUE ON A NON MERCEDES TEAM WIN Lewis Hamilton remains the hot favourite within the all-conquering Mercedes team...

BEST OF ENEMIES: HAMILTON AND ROSBERG They were once the best of friends and despite holding clear-the-air talks...

Keeping the peace at Mercedes

M

ercedes faces an increasing challenge of maintaining decorum between its drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Edicts have been sent out to its pilots to end their animosity which spilled over at Monaco when Hamilton refused to acknowledge Rosberg’s victory. The feud had been brewing with any friction kept relatively hidden from the public glare until Monaco. Rosberg’s seemingly innocent off at Mirabeau during qualifying which snuffed Hamilton’s final chance of snatching pole appeared to change all that. Mercedes’ non-executive chairman Niki Lauda has called for Hamilton and Rosberg to end their differences. Regardless of whether it is possible for the pair to mend their relationship, it is a dispute F1 desperately needs.

www.speedcafe.com

The scenario of drivers going toe-to-toe for the title has been few and far between in recent years. Mercedes looks every bit as dominant as McLaren were with their sublimely brilliant MP4/4 in 1988. While no-one has really bothered McLaren’s 15 wins from 16 races during that tumultuous season, Mercedes could just give that a nudge, albeit that there are three more races in 2014.

Huge value on a non Mercedes team win

L

ewis Hamilton remains the hot favourite within the allconquering Mercedes team. Markets for the Canadian Grand Prix have Hamilton on the topline again at $1.60. Hamilton retains the favourite’s tag even though he was unable to stretch his winning streak to five on the trot at Monaco. Nico Rosberg, who won at the Principality from pole position, is assessed at a relatively attractive $2.50. After six races in 2014, Rosberg has two wins with Hamilton claiming four yet the German holds an edge in the points following his British team-mate’s non-finish at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. Aussie Red Bull star Daniel Ricciardo is a $13 chance of winning his maiden F1 race ahead of Sebastien Vettel at $17. Ferrari is at lengthening odds with Fernando Alonso a $34 while his teammate Kimi Raikkonen is $61. The Maranello marque is poised to usher in new bits for Canada which are said to be

the biggest boost Ferrari has received so far this season. If Hamilton and Rosberg eliminate each other through friendly fire then anyone

of the Red Bull and Ferrari fighters would become incredibly tantalising prospects. Therein lies the big gamble.

Best of Enemies: Hamilton and Rosberg battle to continue in Montreal T

hey were once the best of friends and despite holding clear-the-air talks following a fractious Monaco Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg’s on going relationship remains a ticking time bomb. An emotionally charged race in Monaco two weeks ago confirmed in no uncertain terms that all is not well between Hamilton and Rosberg in the Mercedes camp. As a result, all eyes will be on the duo this weekend at Montreal when the next chapter of the feud unfolds. Flashes of a relationship breakdown appeared as early as Malaysia last year but this season’s intense battle for the championship has stretched Hamilton and Rosberg’s friendship to breaking point. The dramatic scenes in Monaco may have come as a surprise to the viewer, but the falling out began at the Spanish Grand Prix, when Hamilton used an alternative engine map against team orders to hold off Rosberg for victory. However, Rosberg’s controversial trip down an escape road in qualifying at

Monaco proved to be the final straw in the eyes of Hamilton. The Brit was incensed by the actions he felt deliberately sabotaged his chances to secure pole. This became abundantly clear for the world to see when he refused to congratulate Nico on his victory in Sunday’s race. Since the grand prix, it is understood Hamilton has sat down with Nico to air their differences, but surely its only a matter of time before the red mist descends again. The inter-team rivalry between the Mercedes team-mates has already been likened to the intense battle involving Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost at McLaren in the late 1980s. While this rivalry is far from reaching the levels experienced by Senna and Prost, it has given bosses at Mercedes plenty of headaches with regards to managing the situation. The Rosberg/Hamilton feud has increased stress levels at the Brackley squad but it has injected much needed spice to a championship, which appeared to be struggling to engage even the most loyal

srentrap munitalp duorp ruO ™

ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

of supporters. And F1 fans will be glad to hear that Mercedes will continue to adopt a policy of allowing its drivers race each other without too much interference. “This is a bit more stressful for the team to manage, but I don’t want a situation where we just freeze the order throughout the race - that is not what F1 is about,” Mercedes boss Toto Wolff told Autosport. “Therefore we have to manage the consequences. “In our case we adopted the philosophy of letting them race, which as a consequence means that management is a bit more difficult. “[But] our team comes first, and we will never accept an individual putting themselves above the team. “They are part of a very large organisation and I have 110 percent confidence that it will not be to the detriment of the team.” Bitter inter-team rivalries are nothing new in F1 but the situation represents a trip into uncharted waters for Rosberg, while Hamilton has clashed with team-mates on several occasions throughout his F1 career.

Hamilton’s inter-team rivalries Lewis Hamilton v Fernando Alonso (2007)

Hamilton’s debut season in F1 produced one of the most bitter rivalries in recent history when he came up against Fernando Alonso at McLaren. Alonso became increasingly frustrated by how hard the then rookie was pushing him in the early part of the season. The situation boiled over at Hungary when Hamilton disobeyed a team order to let Alonso pass him in qualifying. The Spaniard responded by deliberately refusing to leave his pit box with Hamilton queued up behind with just two minutes of the session remaining. This prevented the Brit from challenging for pole position.

FLASHBACK

In the end, Alonso left the team at the end of the season citing the feud with Hamilton as a reason for his departure.

Lewis Hamilton v Jenson Button (2010-2012)

Button went on to claim victory. The following year Button was angered when Hamilton sent a tweet revealing confidential telemetry data from the cars prior to the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa.

The arrival of Jenson Button to the McLaren team in 2010 as reigning world champion could have sparked an intense rivalry. Hamilton and Button enjoyed a harmonious relationship during their three years stint together but the pair did encounter moments of friction. In 2011, the pair collided during the Canadian Grand Prix which ultimately forced Hamilton into retirement, while

Ralf Schumacher outpaced his world champion brother Michael Schumacher to score victory in the 2001 Canadian Grand Prix. The Williams driver, aided by the powerful BMW V10, produced arguably the finest drive of his F1 career to comprehensively beat his brother’s Ferrari by 20 seconds. Ralf’s victory also created history with the result the only time that two brothers have finished first and second in a grand prix.

It was Michael who led from the start but the key to the race came once the Ferrari racer pitted from the lead. As a result, Ralf inherited a clear track which he made the most of by posting a series of blistering laps. Having established a healthy lead, Ralf was able to pit and come out ahead of his brother. In the end, Ralf cruised home to take the chequered flag from Michael with McLaren’s Mika Hakkinen in third.

Overview Canada stands in stark contrast to the most recent rounds of the season in Spain and Monaco. Where Barcelona is seen as a reference point for overall car performance and the streets of Monte Carlo are totally unique, Montreal presents teams with fresh challenges in terms of high power requirements and heavy braking zones. Despite a lap of the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve being relatively short, the nature of the layout could well reveal larger performance differentials between cars than those seen at previous events this season. Brakes Brakes are one of the key performance areas in Canada. There is a lot of duty going into the brakes at various points around the circuit, with some big stops following long periods at full power. Managing the brakes in the most efficient manner will be a focal point of the weekend.

Overtaking Unlike Monaco, overtaking is particularly prevalent in Canada. The DRS effect is reasonably powerful here which, coupled with big braking zones, should generate ample passing opportunities. Track Surface Problems with the track surface at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve often occur over the winter. This is most prevalent at the Turn 10 hairpin, where the tarmac is often found to be pulling up around the apex. As a result, the track surface is resurfaced quite frequently and thus changes considerably, making it tricky to predict how tyres may perform on a given day.

srentrap munitalp duorp ruO ™

ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

Power Unit The Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is high power sensitivity circuit. Aside from the long straights and fast nature of the circuit, power delivery out of the slower turns, the hairpin in particular, is crucial. Furthermore, as one of the more thirsty tracks on the calendar, this is a circuit where the efficiency formula will come to the fore.

Tyres As per the last race in Monaco, the soft and supersoft compounds have been nominated for this event. Around the streets of Monte Carlo, these compounds behaved very sensibly with no significant issues to report. However, Montreal is a much tougher circuit in terms of tyre duty and should provide a sterner test of this particular allocation. Weather Although the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix was very wet indeed, it stands as the only rain-affected race in Montreal since 2001.

Although there have been wet sessions throughout a handful of weekends, Sundays have tended to remain dry. Reliability In terms of retirements, Montreal is above average for a number of reasons. The infamous ‘Wall of Champions’ has brought races to a premature end for many drivers, as has damage incurred through excessive contact with the sizeable kerbs. However, the layout itself has traditionally proven the main factor as it is particularly tough on engines. The advantage for the teams in terms of countering this threat is that, with six races complete, the season now enters a new gearbox cycle window. Some teams may also elect to use fresh engines, as this could be seen as a benefit given the power sensitive nature of the circuit and the stress it places on components. Safety Cars Unsurprisingly given the potential for reliability issues, safety cars have traditionally been prevalent in Canada. Six of the last nine Canadian Grands Prix have been neutralised by a safety car at least once during the race: five in the case of 2011. Similar to Albert Park in Melbourne, removing a stricken car from the track quickly and cleanly is a tough task. In many locations, even a mechanical breakdown will require a Safety Car to neutralise the race.
