IT’S ALL ABOUT MERCEDES Anything other than a Mercedes win in the Chinese GP...
RICCIARDO REPAYING RED BULL Daniel Ricciardo has already repaid the faith Red Bull Racing placed in him for 2014...
Silver service to resume in Shanghai
T
here appears little tangible proof that any slow-down of the colossal form shown by Mercedes will surface in Shanghai. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg controlled the Bahrain GP right from the start, dicing wheel-to-wheel and sometimes a little too close for comfort, before spreading their margin over the next best to 25s at the finish. Since then the entire F1 field has undergone official tests over two days at the Bahrain circuit. On the first day Rosberg completed 121 laps, concentrating on different set-ups of the F1 W05 across the entire day’s running. Throughout day two Hamilton took over the driving duties principally trying out different tyre compounds for Pirelli over 120 laps. In both instances Rosberg and Hamilton were the quickest on official times. While Hamilton’s best tour was a 1:34.136s, which represented a whopping 1.4s advantage over the second best established by Toro Rosso’s Jean-Eric Vergne, it was achieved on one of Pirelli’s developmental compounds.
www.speedcafe.com
Based on previous results Mercedes should have little trouble assuming their mantle as the top dog. Rosberg won the 2012 event in Shanghai and Hamilton is a two-times winner albeit for McLarenMercedes in 2008 and 2011. With three grands prix completed in 2014, Hamilton has two wins (Malaysia and Bahrain) with Rosberg winning the opening Australian GP.

It’s all about Mercedes A
nything other than a Mercedes win in the Chinese GP would be a windfall for anyone brave enough to put their money up. The market is completely dominated by the Brackley-based Anglo-German team’s drivers Lewis Hamilton who is in-the-red at $1.80 with Nico Rosberg at $2.80. It would appear that only unreliability with the 1.6litre hybrid turbo V6s or friendly fire will prevent Mercedes from maintaining its unbeaten run stretching to four wins in 2014. What is surprising is the fact that Red Bull pair of Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel are on the second line of betting at $15 even though the champion team is

struggling to keep up with the second and third string teams. Perhaps the best value odds in the field are the emerging Force Indias of Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez who are both rated as $26 chances. Hulkenberg made the final step of the podium in Bahrain, realising Force India’s second career podium. There are also decent prices about the
Williams pair of the experienced Felipe Massa ($17) and Valtteri Bottas ($21). As much as Mercedes look good things again, if your patriotism gets the better of you then $15 about Ricciardo is not such a bad thing. Particularly going on his last start performance when he skillfully navigated his way through from 13th on the grid to finish fourth.

Ricciardo repaying Red Bull’s faith by winning Vettel battle
D
aniel Ricciardo has already repaid the faith Red Bull Racing placed in him for 2014 after outperforming world champion team-mate Sebastian Vettel, according to former world champion Alan Jones. The Western Australian’s promotion to Red Bull after two seasons at sister team Toro Rosso raised eyebrows last season, but after just three races 1980 F1 world champion Jones believes he has more than justified the team’s decision. Ricciardo, who saw off competition from 2007 F1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen for Mark Webber’s vacant Red Bull seat, has turned heads since joining the world champion squad. Disregarding his disqualification from second place at the Australian Grand Prix and a Bahrain grid penalty, the 24-yearold has out performed his four-time world champion team mate Sebastian Vettel in two of the three races on the road. “I think every race he has done he has hopped out of the car with his confidence being boosted, Jones told Speedcafe.com “He has been able to hold his head high on every occasion. I think Red Bull must be patting themselves on back saying, ‘we certainly picked the right bloke’. “His pace hasn’t surprised me and I think he can win Grands Prix
“Its not like I haven’t been predicting he is going to go places. “I’ve been saying it for the last four or five years and this is just an indication of what I’ve been saying. “They have got to get some more horsepower and once they do that Vettel and Daniel are going to be looking good.” His performance against reigning world champion Vettel has not gone unnoticed which was further enforced after winning a thrilling dice against his opposite number on the way to
fourth place at the Bahrain Grand Prix. The statistics from the season so far further enforce Ricciardo’s strong start to the headto-head team-mate battle against Vettel. The Australian has a clear advantage in qualifying which will worry the German renowned for his knack of dominating previous team-mates in the discipline. In race trim Ricciardo has the edge too which would be further increased when considering his second place finish in the Australian Grand Prix.

*Ricciardo finished second before being disqualified from the Australian Grand Prix and qualified 3rd in Bahrain but started 13th after 10 place grid penalty for an unsafe pit release during Malaysian Grand Prix.
“I think he has sent the message in no uncertain terms that he is not going to be compromised or intimidated by Vettel and if Sebastian wants to beat him then he is going to have to earn it,” added Jones. “I thought it was quite funny to hear Vettel being told to move over and let Ricciardo passed in Bahrain. He hasn’t been told that for a while. “I have also been saying don’t let the bloody smile fool you. He (Ricciardo) can grows horns at the right time.” After dominating previous Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber at times, Vettel may have met his match in Ricciardo, and fans should keep an eye on this intriguing clash as the season progresses.
FLASHBACK
The world governing body of motorsport, the FIA, dismissed an appeal by Red Bull over the disqualification of Daniel Ricciardo from the Australian Grand Prix last month. At an assembly of the FIA’s international Court of Appeal in Paris on Tuesday, Red Bull’s objection to Ricciardo’s banishment from second place was unsuccessful despite the team tabling a strong defence. Ricciardo’s car consistently breached the mandated 100kg/h fuel limit during his run to second in the Australian Grand Prix. The team had the opportunity to turn down the fuel flow rate on the car after being instructed by the FIA to do so during the race but refused. Red Bull had argued that the regulations were unclear regarding the FIA fuel flow sensor and that race director Charlie Whiting’s technical directives do not hold value. Immediately after the judgement came through Red Bull Racing issued a statement accepting the finding. “We are of course disappointed by the outcome and would not have appealed if we didn’t think we had a very strong case,” the team said in a prepared statement. “We always believed we adhered to the technical regulations throughout the 2014 Australian Grand Prix. We are sorry for Daniel (Ricciardo) that he will not be awarded the 18 points from the event, which we think he deserved. “We will continue to work very hard to amass as many points as possible for the team, Daniel and Sebastian (Vettel) throughout the season.” The team had switched to a new sensor for Saturday however the FIA nor the squad were satisfied hence the decision to return to the Friday electronic device.

The Milton Keynes squad dominated the weekend from start to finish which began with Vettel claiming the squad’s first pole position in qualifying. led the way with Vettel ahead of team mate Mark Webber. A slick pit stop strategy from the team gave Vettel the lead as the race reached the final third. In the end, Vettel made no mistakes to take the chequered flag and record Red Bull’s first Grand Prix victory. Webber ensured the team celebrated a 1-2 finish which Brawn GP’s Jenson Button was third.

Main challenges of Shanghai: Shanghai has the longest straight of the season at 1.3km. The ICE will be at full revs for just under 20 seconds, around one fifth of the predicted lap time. Getting a good top speed on this straight will be important and the ICE and MGU-K will be put under great pressure to maximise the speed. The MGU-H will be able to recover energy on the straight, but recovering enough to be efficient is critical since the heavy braking periods at both ends of the straight put a focus on the MGU-H delivering power to avoid any hesitation or ‘turbo lag’ on the exit. Difficulty rating: High. The long straight poses a tricky problem at this stage in the season plus the slow, tightening corners put an emphasis on good driveability. Shanghai is likely to be one of the biggest challenges in the first part of the year. What to watch out for: Weather conditions can vary quite significantly in China, ranging from very cold in the Friday morning session to hot for the race. These variations will change track conditions and therefore car behaviour, which will change the amount of fuel consumed per lap. Additionally, at present it’s scheduled to rain on Friday so the cars will have less grip, but still the same amount of torque – the slow corners will look spectacular.
