HAMILTON CONTINUES TO LEAD BETTING IN GERMANY Nico Rosberg will start the second favourite at his home grand prix at Hockenheim...

SILVER ARROWS PREPARE FOR HOCKENHEIM SHOWDOWN The intense head-to-head battle between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg...

The Silver Arrows fight is on

T

he two retirements for Lewis Hamilton in Australia and Canada played havoc with his mind. Then squandering golden qualifying opportunities, the latest of which saw him start from sixth at the British GP before claiming the win, compounded the mental anguish for Hamilton. Now that he has seen his team-mate Nico Rosberg have his first DNF of the year which has enabled him to close to within four points of the German, Hamilton has taken some valuable lessons on board. At one point his body language and indeed comments suggested that Hamilton had lost focus, thinking there would be no straight fight with Rosberg. Entertaining such a thought was ridiculous in the first place but now Hamilton has a new spring in his step and seemingly a new outlook on the situation. While Mercedes-Benz are clearly a class above their nearest rivals in this new era of hybrid sophistication and 1.6-litre turbo engines, a dogfight between the pair of Silver Arrows drivers seems set to be waged all year long.

Apart from another team emerging as a genuine winning contender on performance, a Senna-Prost style battle royale would be a welcome foil for what otherwise could be a season of discontent.

Hamilton continues to lead betting in Germany N

ico Rosberg will start the second favourite at his home grand prix at Hockenheim. After his first non-finish of the season at the British GP, Rosberg remains at his customary price of $2.65 while Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton is again an odds-on pop at $1.55. Given that only one race so far this season has been won by a non Mercedes car (Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo in Canada) the continued short quotes about Mercedes are understandably valid. Moreover in a straight fight, and with power units and engines blazing on song, Mercedes continue to hold a huge performance advantage over the field. What has been interesting is the changes in betting beyond the Mercedes pair. The ever emerging Williams team are on the move in markets with the impressive Valtteri Bottas into $17 while his teammate and an unsung hero of the British GP, Felipe Massa at $19. The pair have for the first time been

www.speedcafe.com

assessed at shorter quotes than Red Bull’s Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel. Ricciardo, as was the case leading into the British GP, remains at $21 while Vettel is $26. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso is at $41 with

the double world champion struggling to extract an effort that remotely nears a minor podium result in a straight fight. Interestingly outside Alonso the rest of the F1 field is largely unwanted with the remaining drivers at $101 and better.

Silver Arrows prepare for Hockenheim showdown

T

he intense head-to-head battle between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg for the world championship is shaping up to be an all-time classic, with this weekend’s German Grand Prix a key psychological battlefield. Hamilton and Rosberg’s brewing rivalry has been a saving grace for a Formula 1 season which threatened to be largely uneventful with Mercedes boasting such an advantage over their rivals. However, as the season reaches the halfway mark it is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the fight for the title. Echoes from past dices between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet are already starting to emerge. This weekend’s German Grand Prix at Hockenheim provides a mouth watering prospect for F1 fans with the pressure firmly on Rosberg to perform in front of his home crowd. Hamilton did his best to turn the screw on his opposite number even more after romping to a victory on home soil at Silverstone two weeks ago, while Rosberg was forced to retire from the lead with a mechanical problem. As a result of a dramatic twist in the title race, Rosberg’s championship lead has

been cut from 29 points to just four. In a week that has seen Germany lift the FIFA World Cup, sporting success is very much in the nation’s mind which could work either for or against Rosberg at Hockenheim. For Rosberg, Sunday’s race will be a true test of his title credentials knowing he has to respond to Hamilton’s victory, while facing the growing expectation and pressure from a rapturous home crowd.

Bouyed by his second British GP win, Hamilton claims the momentum has shifted back in his favour, but he is all too aware how quickly things can turn against him, after retirements in Australia and Canada. Meanwhile, the psychological mind games have already begun with the Brit saying Rosberg will not have anything like the backing he received from the crowd at the British Grand Prix.

Round 10 - German Grand Prix I Cover Story

He even claimed that Rosberg ‘isn’t really German‘ having grown up in Monaco with Finnish father Keke Rosberg and German mother. “To be honest, Nico has never been in Germany, so he’s not really German. I remember when we used to race during karting, he never stood next to a German flag – not ever,” the 2008 World Champion told English newspaper The Guardian. “Just going into Germany, to Hockenheim, I know whilst it’s Nico’s home grand prix, he doesn’t have even one eighth of the support us Brits get at Silverstone, Hamilton told media after winning the British Grand Prix “The fans are unlike anywhere else so I’m not worried in that sense. “It’s a track where I won before, in 2008 I think it was. It’s a good track for me, so I’m gonna use the pace that I have, because I have the pace. “I’ve just got to put the damn laps together and when I do, then I think the opportunities will come in front of me.” Although he replied to Hamilton’s jibe regarding the validity of the German Grand Prix as a home race, Rosberg has remained relatively tightlipped in the lead up choosing to focus on his marriage to long time girlfriend providing a welcomed distraction. In itself the avoidance of playing to Hamilton’s psychological warfare could be perceived as a strength, however all will be revealed this weekend.

While Rosberg has appeared cool under pressure this season, he will be aware of his relatively poor record on home soil. Without a podium finish at the German Grand Prix in seven attempts, he will be desperate to consign that record to the history books, providing yet further spice to a fascinating German Grand Prix. the German GP, a unanimous vote by teams to delay a ban in the FRIC suspensions until the end of the season failed to materialise. McLaren has made public its intention to remove FRIC ahead of the Hockenheim round, leaving the potential for messy protests. With more to be played out in the coming days the murky situation remains in the balance. The FRIC system connects the front and rear suspension to maintain ride height which in turn improves performance. Mercedes are believed to have gained the most advantage from this system while many of the teams have based their car design around the concept.

Teams braced for suspension system ban While the battle for the title will grab the headlines this weekend, there is a potential disaster looming on the horizon for Mercedes and the leading F1 teams. Last week the FIA issued a letter to the teams stating Front and Rear Interconnected Suspension systems (FRIC) contravene article 3.15 of the sport’s technical regulations and are set to be banned. As the hours counted down to the start of

Juan Pablo Montoya hauled himself into title contention with a commanding victory in the 2003 German Grand Prix for Williams. The Colombian dominated the race from start to finish finishing more than a minute ahead of McLaren’s David Coulthard and Renault’s Jarno Trulli. Montoya moved to within six points of then championship leader Michael Schumacher with just four races remaining. The Williams showed impressive pace at a hot Hockenheimring as Montoya secured pole position in qualifying. Carnage ensued at the start when McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen made contact with a slow starting Ferrari of Ruben Barrichello. This speared the Finn into the barriers at Turn 1 which

title contender Ralf Schumacher as he picked up extensive damage to his Williams. Once racing resumed after a brief Safety Car period, Montoya marched into a healthy lead and proved to be untouchable. He went on to take the chequered flag by 65 seconds. There was plenty of action behind as Michael Schumacher and Coulthard fought over second spot held by Trulli. In the end both drivers passed the Renault. However, just four laps from the end Schumacher picked up a left rear puncture which dropped him from second to seventh, allowing Coulthard and Trulli to complete the podium. ™

HOCKENHEIM CIRCUIT GUIDE  „‡ ‚ˆ €

The Hockenheim circuit layout can be seen as similar to that of Austria in many ways. While the surface is more abrasive and the lap longer in terms of distance, times have traditionally only differed by a matter of a few seconds. Similarities between the two become apparent when analysing the corner content, with medium to highspeed turns prevalent. Sector one is all about engine power, sector three lower speed performance and traction, sector two a combination of both. These contrasts make for an interesting and challenging circuit, both to driver and team, as compromises must be made. Finding the perfect setup for all three sectors is simply not possible, forcing teams to balance the demands of each. Straight line speed will be crucial down the long DRS zone into Turn Six - a heavy braking hairpin with a variety of potential lines, which lends itself to overtaking.
