Double trouble

Win, lose or draw, the performance of the Mercedes GP entries could well decide the outcome of the 2013 World Drivers’ Championship. Mercedes team-mates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg sit fourth and sixth respectively in the standings at the season’s halfway mark. With Hamilton 58 points behind championship leader Sebastian Vettel and Rosberg 15 further adrift again, it will take an impressive run home for either driver to lift the crown this year. The speed of the Mercedes package, however, is such that nothing can be discounted. Six pole positions from the first nine races may have only resulted in two victories, but there’s plenty of midnight oil being burnt in Brackley to ensure that strike rate improves. Mercedes’ importance to the championship fight runs deeper than just its own results, though. As the only top running squad with two equally matched drivers, the performance of the Mercedes takes on extra importance in the everfluctuating overall performance equation. Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen have been consistently scoring points during the season to date, and could benefit, or be hindered, greatly by who the Mercedes drivers take points off and when. With the Hungarian Grand Prix poised to set the mood ahead of the traditional mid-season break, the paddock awaits Mercedes’ Sunday form this weekend with baited breath.

Keeping touch

Ferrari under pressure as mid-season break looms

O

n the eve of the summer break a clearer picture is beginning to emerge as to which teams are likely to throw down the challenge to the benchmark Red Bull operation. Following a strong start to the season that included two victories for Fernando Alonso, Ferrari is currently in danger of losing touch with the outright performance of its key rivals. Alonso currently sits second in points to Red Bull’s championship leader Sebastian Vettel after nine races, but it’s been Mercedes that has taken the fight to the three-time reigning champion in recent events.

the 2009 incident, he has become a crowd favourite.

While Ferrari’s title hopes are firmly pinned on the back of Alonso, each year’s Hungarian Grand Prix inevitably sees some special attention turn to team-mate Felipe Massa.

“The Hungarian Grand Prix is a very special event for me, that brings back a lot of memories,” he says.

Massa was lucky to escape a frightening blow at the Budapest circuit in 2009 when a spring detached itself from Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn and pierced his Brazilian compatriot’s helmet.

Massa suffered a huge gash above his left eye when his skull was fractured in the accident which occurred at close to terminal speed.

At the Hungaroring this weekend Ferrari will at least minimise the points damage in order to keep in touch with Red Bull before the championship goes into a 28-day break between Hungary and the Belgium Grand Prix.

Doctors placed the Brazilian in an induced coma after he underwent emergency surgery. The lucky escape remains firmly in Massa’s memory bank as he tries to emerge from a form slump.

The summer break means that teams will be blocked from performing any

“Naturally, there are some negative memories from my accident, but also positive ones in that I am here today, getting ready for Budapest, healthy and still racing.

“Overtaking is difficult, with changes of direction all the time, which make it a fun track. So it’s an old style race track and Sunday afternoon can be tough, but I like going back to these old fashioned venues.”

Massa spent some time at the Silverstone test last week evaluating new compound Pirelli tyres that will be in use at Hungary. The tyres will use the 2012 construction with the 2013 compounds.

“I love the fans in Hungary, as I actually have a lot more of them since my accident, so it’s somewhere I am always pleased to go back to and of course I hope I can have a good race there this weekend.”

Ferrari admit that the circuit is not conducive to the F138 and that qualifying up front will be paramount; something which the Italian marque has not been able to effect so far in 2013.

Ferrari development driver Davide Rigon spent the majority of time at Silverstone evaluating different technical settings.

The precedes of a second DRS zone at the Hungaroring this year will open up another opportunity for overtaking on the otherwise tight circuit. The second zone will come into play after Turn 1, following the previous zone on the front straight. There is a relatively short run on a downhill gradient into Turn 2 which drivers should be able to capitalise on if they can close up in the first zone. “It’s a short track, with a lot of corners one after the other with no long straights,” Massa observes.

Massa is taking a positive approach though, saying all is not lost if an optimum set up can be perfected early in the weekend. “The important thing will be to get a good understanding of exactly how the car is reacting as quickly as possible,” he says. “The circuit requires as much downforce as possible, because the speed down the straight is not so important here. You need a car that is very stable and that is kind to the tyres to avoid degradation. I think we can be competitive, so I’m hoping our weekend goes in the opposite way to what people are expecting.”

srentrap munitalp duorp ruO ™

ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

Tyres, as they have been all season, will be crucial with the F138 showing a liking to the medium and soft compound rubber. “I expect the tyres will be critical again, especially in relation to temperature,” said Massa ahead of a weekend in which ambient temperatures are expected to soar into the high 30 degree bracket. “They will perform very differently in qualifying and the race and I hope we can make the most of the high temperatures.” Massa understands that he needs to produce some strong results and make up for some of the disappointments of recent races. “For a driver, the most important thing is always the race result and I hope this weekend will deliver that for me, as the last couple of races have not been so successful,” Massa said. “There was always something happening which meant I couldn’t finish as high up as I should have done. Therefore what I would like most of all is to turn things around, because going on holiday with a good result under my belt would really make the difference.”

Round 10 - Hungary I Track Details

9

Hungaroring Circuit Technical preview with the Lotus F1 Team.

THE CAR Rear wing Rear wing configuration will run to maximum downforce levels thanks to the relatively low speed nature of the circuit. Brakes The lap begins with relatively heavy braking heading into turn one, which comes at the end of a comparatively long straight. By contrast, demands on the brakes from Turn 4 to Turn 10 are very light. The drivers therefore need good confidence in their braking systems to be right on the mark when needed, as they are used heavily relatively seldom over the course of a lap. Suspension The layout of the Hungaroring circuit promotes understeer, with a strong front end required to prevent this. The drivers will also ride the kerbs a lot at throughout the course of a lap here, so a soft front end is useful in that respect. Tyres The medium and soft Pirelli P-Zeros are allocated. This will be the first race in which we’ll see a combination of 2013 compounds with 2012 construction. The

www.speedcafe.com

circuit surface and layout is relatively kind to the tyres, however the high temperatures frequently experienced in Budapest can cause the rubber other issues such as blistering.

Turn 2 The track runs quite noticeably downhill into turn two. With high potential for drivers to outbrake themselves here, they will need to keep their wits about them.

Front wing As with the rear, maximum downforce is required from the front wing in line with the circuit layout and also to help counter understeer. We will run a new specification of front wing to assist with this.

Turns 3 & 4 Moderate braking from 240km/h to 150km/h at Turn 5 follows the slight kink of Turn 4; a tricky series of corners taken at medium / high speed.

Engine We’re looking for non-peaky power delivery here to facilitate traction out of the low-speed corners and provide good all round driveability. The engine needs to be mapped in such a way as to deliver sharp bursts of power rather than sustained application of throttle. Ambient temperatures are particularly high in Budapest, so the engine must perform efficiently through the lower rev range while offering efficient cooling solutions.

Turns 4-11 Turns 4 to 11 very much lead into each other so there’s little braking here and no room for error, as a small mistake at any stage can have a big effect on overall lap time. The drivers need a well-balanced car with good change of direction capabilities through this section.

Our proud platinum partners

THE Circuit Approaching Turn 1 Heavy braking from almost 300km/h on the main straight to under 100km/h at the first turn creates the most likely overtaking opportunity on the circuit.

All-In-One Security

Turn 13 The second slowest corner on the circuit, Turn 13 is a tight left hander taken at around 100km/h before launching the car into the final turn… Turns 14 A good exit from the third gear turn fourteen is crucial, as it leads on to the circuits’only straight and subsequently into turn one; the best overtaking opportunity around the lap.

Round 10 - Hungary I Bagman

10

The Bagman says...

R

ed Bull Racing, Mercedes GP and the Lotus F1 team should all fancy their chances of victory heading into this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Lotus in particular is perhaps in with its best chance of victory since Kimi Raikkonen’s success at the season-opener at Albert Park. Each team’s ability to make their revised specification Pirelli tyres work in high temperatures will ultimately decide the weekend. Lotus’ trademark affinity with the Pirelli’s was on show in Budapest last year, where Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean took

second and third respectively to a then McLaren-mounted Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton returns in 2013 with a Mercedes that will almost certainly be the quickest car over one lap. Six poles so far this season attests to that. The German Grand Prix showed however that there are still genuine issues with the way the silver cars use their rear tyres. Missing the recent three-day tyre and rookie test at Silverstone, as a punishment for its illegal post-Spanish Grand Prix tyre test with Pirelli, will clearly not have helped. The Red Bull is as ever the conservative tipper’s benchmark, but this hasn’t been

the happiest hunting ground for the threetime defending champions in the past. The squad has won just once here in its history, and it is currently one of just two tracks on the schedule (along with Austin) where star driver Sebastian Vettel has not stood on the top step. Where Ferrari will be in the mix is perhaps the biggest question mark. Fernando Alonso has managed to finish in the top five in each of the last five races, but such a feat will not be easy to continue if the car’s raw qualifying pace does not improve.
